An Extremely Interesting Detail In Dark Souls 1 And 3 About Dragon Form, Tail Cutting, And Other Things

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 04:48 PM PDT

I don't know whether this was discussed or not before, but I was scrolling through Dark Souls artworks, and as I was scrolling, I noticed just how beautiful dragons are, throughout the games. But then I noticed something else when scrolling through the Path of the Dragon sections on the wiki.

According to Fextralife, in Dark Souls 1, when using a Dragon Torso Stone, your attack power is boosted by 25%, and you turn into a dragonoid that looks like this:

    https://images.app.goo.gl/XoERg7Lsz7ofbaez5

In Dark Souls 3, when using a Dragon Torso Stone, your attack power is only boosted by 10%, and you turn into a dragonoid that looks like this:

    https://images.app.goo.gl/XDJmTM7brzFw9LLJ8

Notice how the Dark Souls 1 dragon form has scales, while the Dark Souls 3 dragon form is scaleless? It could be a minor aesthetic change, like how stray demons from Dark Souls 1 had scales, but Dark Souls 3 stray demons had fur. But this is FromSoft we're talking about. This seemingly trivial detail is probably not as trivial as it appears.

Scales in dragons usually symbolize how close to an ancient dragon they are. As you get more and more distantly related from the everlasting dragons, their scales of immortality grow weaker and weaker, until they can't really be said to be 'immortal' anymore. Of course, there are exceptions like Seath, who had a genetic disorder that didn't allow him to grow scales of immortality, but I'll get into that later. Also, as time passes, the power of the scales of immortality would diminish, because pretty much all the everlasting dragons have died.

An interesting thing to note is that it might not just be the passage of time diluting the power of dragons and the dragon stone. Think about in Dark Souls 1, where there is a very important place, filled with knowledge, that's next to a densely populated area. That's right, the Duke's Archives. As soon as Anor Londo gets repopulated, people are going to stumble into the Duke's Archives, and by extension, the cave where Seath's lifeless and half-crystal body lies.

Let's say you were a dragon worshipper, who sought the power of dragons, but much of the knowledge has been lost to the ages. Then, one day, in the city of the gods, a near-perfect everlasting dragon's corpse was discovered. It's perfect for your research, as the imperfect wyverns and drakes are nowhere near strong enough to worship. The last everlasting dragon was seen a thousand years ago, so no one knows what they truly look like, but looking at the colossal size and dignified shape, you can image how one would worship it. In fact, the same can be applied to Oceiros, where instead of mimicking a true, scaled dragon, he instead becomes a dragonoid without scales, even though his goal was to become a true dragon, and he was perfectly capable of getting scales, he just didn't.

Anyways, you create dragon stones from the body, but since this dragon is Seath the Scaleless, the dragonoid form is filled with power, but not the true strength of actual everlasting dragons. But there's no way to know that the stones aren't as effective as they used to be, because the last everlasting dragon is probably dead, turned into stone, in Ash Lake.

Also to note, in Dark Souls 1, there are weapons that can be obtained by cutting off the tail of dragons and their descendants. Priscilla's Dagger is obtained by cutting off Priscilla's (a half dragon) tail. The Gargoyle Tail Axe is pretty self explanatory, as with the Drake Sword from the Hellkite Wyvern, and others. The thing to note about these weapons is that not just any old dragonoid drops them, only dragonoids who are closely linked with true dragons. True dragons and close descendants have extremely hard scales, a trait that's not present with the dragons of Dark Souls 3. The Dragon Tailbone Spear also confirms this, saying that the power of dragons in the tailbone spear had tragically faded.

Because dragon scales are squishier, due to thousands of years of them slowly losing their scales of immortality, tail cuts are now impossible for the younger wyverns and other dragons we see in DS3. Darkeater Midir is the only close descendent of the everlasting dragons, but because he spent many thousands of years in the Abyss, the Abyss slowly corrupted his scales, and wore them down, making his tail unfit for being a weapon.

    What does Kirk actually want?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 07:59 PM PDT

One of the characters i never truly understand is Kirk.

He seems to be part of the darkwraiths, but doesnt wear their typical armor set. I addition you can find his armor set near the daughter of chaos bonfire, which could implement that he actually has some connections to queelags sister in some shape or form.

The location you can encounter him: Depths Demon Ruins Lost Izalith Two locations are very close to the DoC bonfire (dephts are also kinda near).

Darkwraiths seem to be unable to kill Firekeeper or dont kill them for a unknown reason. Maybe they need the bonfire to pin enemies easier, since bonfires are very important hotspots. On the other hand they can teleport no matter what, the host has to be human tho. I think we have to look away from the gameplay to understand him.

I believe that he gathers humanity to help queelags sister survive. No firekeeper means no bonfire. This only make sense if the bonfires are important for the form of teleport the Darkwraiths use. The usual way to teleport is by using bonfires so it could be true, but the player can only teleport after receiving the lordvessel....

What is your opinion on what Kirk wants?

Can I play with BKS up to Seath for the Moonlight Sword?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:43 AM PDT

I will be returning to Lordran in the Dark Souls Remastered this friday. Back on the PS3 I lived in this world long after I got the platinum.

Now after playing King's Field and learning to love the Moonlight Sword I plan to make my character into an INT-build.

However I truly love the Black Knight Sword and will replay the start until the Black Knight in Undead Burg drops it.

Now my question is this; Since I've totally forgotten about stats, can I play the game with the BKS up until Seath as I make a build for the Moonlight sword without any problem? Any tips?

Also; What armor do you all like with your Moonlight Sword?

Noob question. Would you recommend spears and rapiers?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 03:51 PM PDT

It's hard to believe, but I am about to start my first DS1R playthrough soon and know a little about the game and it's weapons. For starters, are spears and rapiers any good? Some friend is advising against it, but I thought, maybe I ask more experienced people on this

I think I've soft locked myself

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 09:37 PM PDT

I've been doing a naked run where I only use clubs, and I believe I had soft locked myself. While the run has been by no means easy, I have been able to get to Anor Londo without too much trouble. I beat O&S, got the Lordvessel and decided to go to the Duke's Archives. This being my 4th playthrough, I knew I had to be killed by Seath. What I didn't realize is that Seath can curse you. So I am currently at a bonfire that I can't warp from, unable to kindle, with half my half, and no armour. Everything can one shot me. I don't know what to do lol

    Build direction quality/pyro

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 03:16 AM PDT

    Hi there,

i'm on my first DS1 playthrough and around lvl 50. Originally i was planning to go for a full dex/mobility/pyro build, but i'm not so sure anymore. I really do like to main a 2H-Halberd, and i want to thoroughly check out the Silver Knight Spear when i get it. I also have a Pyro-Flame+13. I'm fastrolling the entire game so far and want to keep it that way.

I've toyed around with a Iaito and like it, its just far outdamaged by the Halberd due to 2h-Str at the moment.

    Right now i'm at Vit20 Dex26 (planning for 40) End26 Str16(planning for 27) Att16(Planning for 19).

I was going to get the Ninja Flip Ring, but i'm not so sure if i might find the animation annoying, also i don't like killing Shiva and the Bodyguard so much :)

I was playing around with Havel+Wolf for poise, which isnt bad, but can get very lazy, whith good pyro and halberd damage. Might the Leo Ring be worth it for the Halberd? I figure counter-damage applies only during a smaller part of the attack animation, which doesnt sound that cool. (And Halberd only got one good thrust attack).

Any suggestions on how to further develop my build? Would be grateful.

Is Dark Souls worth playing in 2021?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 06:31 PM PDT

I've never played any Dark Souls before and I'm debating getting Dark Souls 1 Remastered when it goes on sale on the PlayStation Store. I know the answers are going to be biased since the only people in this sub are people who love Dark Souls, but I want an opinion.

What's so appealing about Dark Souls, and why it considered a classic game? I don't play a ton of RPGs and I'm worried it might be too hard. I tried Sekiro a while after it came out and I only got to about Genichiro. After that kind of sucked. I'm not afraid of a challenge though, and is Dark Souls easier or harder than Sekiro? I understand the style of gameplay and progression is different too.

Sorry this was somewhat long, and thanks for any answers!

Filthy casual here - Question about the DLC bosses

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 03:09 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

So I've beat the main story on Ds1 remastered once. I refused to look anything up as I wanted to do a blind playthrough. I didn't know anything about the DLC so I figured after I best Gwynn I'd have access to it.

    Obviously I was wrong.

Well, due to FOMO, here I am years later fighting Artorias. Holy shit. I feel like the difficult of the game has gone up ten fold. And a friend of mine let me know that the other two bosses are even worse (in the dlc)

To give you an idea of what I'm working with, I have

    Uchigatana +10 Full Havel's Estus flask +2 Level 77 with 14 str/33 dex

Before you call me an idiot (I probably am an idiot), remember that I've tried to look up as little as possible. Like I've made it a point to not check the wiki for the other fire keeper souls or whatever.

So anyways, am I fucked? I can get Artorias to about 1/2 half on 15 estus flasks at +2. It just feels insurmountable. Do I stand a chance at all at completing this DLC? Honestly makes me really sad that I made it all this way only to fail.

Why can't I find the dark souls trilogy anywhere?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 08:02 PM PDT

I'm looking for this game for PlayStation. I've found the official bandi namco page for it here, https://www.bandainamcoent.com/games/dark-souls-trilogy with a broken pre-order link, and every retailer has it out of stock. There are tons of EU versions available, but I'm worried i won't be able to run them on the ps5 in NA. Did they stop printing them? What gives?

How does leveling work? Or rather stat distribution and reading it?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 09:43 PM PDT

I want to do a Zwei build because my first run I got lucky and got a BK Halberd so I felt the game was usually on the easier side for me. I also didnt really explore much about leveling weapons or armor or anything about covenants and what the game has to offer.

If im doing 2 handed stuff do I mostly just level str? Should I put points into dex or just one or the other? How do I make it so I can quick roll with the Zweihander?

    Best place to farm souls?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 03:11 PM PDT

So, I finally beat the Capra Demon, and gathered enough souls to buy the Crest of Arthritis, allowing me access to the rest of Darkroot Garden. I can also reach the Depths now. Where should I farm for souls, focussing on easiest return of investment? I'm thinking I should boost my Resistance to make it less likely I'll get OHK'ed so much.

    Tips for leveling covenants

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 11:52 PM PDT

I'm an offline player, I haven't min-maxed my character or stopped myself from leveling, and I don't have remastered. Is it even viable to level some of the covenants? For example, will I be able to level Forest Hunter or Warrior of Sunlight at all? I really like the game and would like to complete everything it has to offer, but I also don't want to have to play "competitively" or get the Remastered version to be able to do that. I know many of them can be effectively farmed offline (Eyes of Death, Dragon Scales, etc.), but some things just seem to absolutely require multiplayer. Edit: I'm on a PS3.

Just earned myself a proper DS1 platinum.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 11:27 PM PDT

This isn't an impressive "this is my first Dark Souls experience" post celebrating my having acquired all the achievements. Just wanted to share my peace as I have redeemed myself.

Sekiro was my first FS game and I fell in love, got all the achievables, and eagerly moved on to DSR, then the trilogy as a whole, and bought Bloodborne and borrowed my friends PS4, loving each more and more and doing everything I could in them, netting me all the 100%'s (still waiting to dig into Demon's Souls eventually!)

However, something has never sat right with me. When I played DSR, I met some nice folks in the community that helped me out with the Knight's Honor gear. But as my love for the series and Soulslike subgenre deepened, I realized that what drew me to it was the challenge. Pushing myself to overcome obstacles, and always forcing myself to do so without Sunbros; learning patience and to adapt and grow in the face of adversity. I genuinely feel that these games taught me some lessons that I carry with me into my normal life. That being said, it didn't take long for me to regret that my initial achievement with DS1 was tainted by an easy way out. I don't cheese my bosses, and I wished I hadn't cheesed that platinum.

Recently I realized that I had DS1 for the Xbox 360 that I had snagged when it was free with gold a long while back, and decide to revisit. NG quickly sucked me back in and soon I decided to get all the achievements the right way, and tonight I did that. And I enjoyed every second of it. Some bosses on NG we just as tough as my first time (O&S, I'm looking a you... and Anor Londo archers...). I even goofed and couldn't join the Darkwraith covenant on NG or NG+, so I had the joy of experimenting with the game progression on NG+2 (after reaching Lordran I fought Sif>Gargoyles>Four Kings>Quelaag>Iron Golem to get me to Anor Londo and Big Papa Blacksmith.

This game is such a masterwork of gaming and art. The world and it's flexibility are unparalleled in anything else I've played. It taught me to try again and be patient. And I'm glad that I have righted my wrongs with it.

TLDR; got help with Knight's Honor achievement when 100%ing and slowly went hollow; decided to 100% DS1 properly and Revived to Human
