    Magic Weapon Showdown

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 01:19 PM PDT

Conventional wisdom is that Crystal Magic Weapon is just plain better than Great Magic Weapon in all situations. But lately I've been seeing evidence that may not always be true. Crystal has a higher damage multiplier (30% vs 20%) but Great has higher base damage (30 vs 15) so it's possible that it would be as good or even better than CMW on weapons with low base damage. And then I remembered that on weapons with natural elemental damage, buffs only count the elemental base damage of the weapon for calculations. So I tested it out.

As usual when doing these side by side damage tests, I used the hollow by the first bonfire of the Grave of Saints as a punching bag. He's close enough to the bonfire to be able to test quickly. He's passive so I don't have to worry about counter damage. And he respawns indefinitely even without Company of Champions. I also tested basic Magic Weapon and Aromatic Ooze while I was at it just because. The character used has 50 Intelligence.

    Weapon Magic Great Crystal Ooze
    Retainer's Short Sword 223 230 229 241
    Magic Retainer's Short Sword 310 319 316 n/a
    Dark Thief Dagger 223 238 265 n/a
    Raw Blue Flame 398 411 419 422
    Magic Blue Flame 383 394 396 n/a
    Drakeblood Greatsword 400 404 393 415
    Magic Drakeblood Greatsword 453 459 451 n/a
    Magic Ice Rapier 413 430 452 n/a
    Crescent Axe 414 420 414 431
    Magic Crescent Axe 414 421 415 n/a
    Pilgrim's Spontoon 318 326 331 n/a
    Magic Pilgrim's Spontoon 335 343 347 n/a
    Dragonrider's Halberd 511 520 521 n/a
    Magic Dragonrider's Halberd 525 536 538 n/a
    Crescent Sickle 452 463 467 n/a
    Magic Crescent Sickle 527 540 544 n/a
    Rampart Golem Lance 467 475 474 485
    Magic Rampart Golem Lance 509 520 519 n/a
    Dragonrider Twinblade 353 361 361 n/a
    Magic Dragonrider Twinblade 376 386 386 n/a
    Sorcerer's Twinblade 272 280 279 291
    Magic Sorcerer's Twinblade 292 301 296 n/a
    Caestus 257 265 278 267
    Bone Fist 220 232 252 234
    Dark Bone Fist 229 246 276 n/a
    Magic Bone Fist 270 287 310 n/a
    Raw Handmaid's Ladle 22 25 28 27
    Raw Malformed Skull 596 625 679 627

    TLDR:

Magic Weapon is always the weakest buff, no surprise there. (Except on Drakeblood, but that's a corner case.)

What is surprising is that of the 10 weapons that both have natural magic damage and can be buffed, 6 of them get as good or better of a buff from Great Magic Weapon as Crystal Magic Weapon. The tipping point seems to be exactly 110 base Magic damage as seen on the Dragonrider Twinblade. Even the ones that were over that didn't have a very large difference in the damage added.

Resin proved to be the best buff on all of the elemental weapons it can be applied to, but can't be put on 4 of the 10 or on any infused weapons. If you're building around the Crescent Axe or Drakeblood Greatsword and don't want to level Int or cast spells, they're probably your best bet.

Non-elemental weapons regardless of base damage all seem to benefit much more from CMW than the others by quite a wide margin.

What's your favorite base game boss, without the dlcs? For me easily Darklurker. I love how I hidden he is and how you have to find the locations of the Old Chasm.

    Early DS2 Thoughts

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 02:50 PM PDT

I've played and platinumed Bloodborne, DS3, and DSR, and I'm playing through DS2 for the first time. Having beaten (what I think is) the first major chunk of the game, I thought I'd collect my thoughts so far.

Context: I've beaten the Last Giant, Dragonrider, Flexile Sentry, Ruin Sentinels, Lost Sinner, Belfry Gargoyles, and Skeleton Lords. I'm a Cleric, mostly using the starting mace, but I recently switched to and upgraded a +6 Bandit Axe. My stats are: Level 64, Vig 10, End 18, Vit 8, Att 17, Str 20, Dex 5, Adpt 15, Int 4, Fth 20.

The game is a lot of fun! Even though I've seen some of it played by others before, it's great to have Souls content I haven't played myself. It's been a good reminder about fundamentals, as I've died a lot, which is kind of refreshing after mid-100s level characters in the other games. It definitely feels like Dark Souls, so I'm glad I didn't permanently skip over it as some "purists" have suggested.

That said, I can see some reasons why people don't love this game, and I know some of these complaints are because I've already played games with quality of life improvements, but that is what it is. The torch mechanic is really cool but took a long time to get the hang of, especially because I kept wanting to be able to take out a torch far away from any bonfire (nice to eventually discover there is an item that lets you!) Coming back with less max health every time you die is dumb, and even by Dark Souls standards, it is a particularly BS mechanic. I can absolutely see how this would drive less invested players away. It can create a negative feedback loop that is impossible to escape, especially early on when you're weakest and don't have many human effigies.

The gameplay, and especially combat, really suffers in my opinion for feeling slow and sluggish. I know that's in comparison to DS3 and Bloodborne, which isn't really giving DS2 a fair chance, but man, my character feels slow. I hate that you can't move while drinking estus, and while I've heard people complain about popping life gems like candy, I've found them really difficult to use many of during combat (especially boss fights) because of how long it takes. Everything seems to take so much stamina in this game, and I constantly find myself running low. I know stamina management is important in every Souls game, but it feels really critical here. Rolling takes so much stamina that it feels way less viable of a strategy in this game, which is also really weird coming from DS3 and BB. The timing on parries also feels different and less useful, but it's also possible I just need to practice them more here. (Oh how I miss my hunter's pistol.) I don't have a great sense for if pumping points into adaptability early (as suggested by most DS2 content I've seen) helped me or was a waste.

I love the variety and frequency of NPCs so far, and I also like how relatively open world it is. Maybe I would discover that I'm eventually blocked, but it feels like there are so many paths I could choose to take right now. That's definitely a positive that feels much more like DSR that is lost in DS3 and BB. I've never played a faith-based build before, so this isn't super DS2 focused, but while having more heals for exploring is nice, I'm wondering when will I finally get the good miracles? Soon I hope.

    How is damage calculated?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 02:49 PM PDT

So far I thought that if I have a fire infused weapon, and I use let's say dark weapon buff on it, then it will be like (numbers are just for the sake of example): 100physical dmg, 100fire damage without buff, and then 100 physical, 100fire 50 dark with the buff. But then I went on a boss that's resistant to dark and I actually dealt less damage with the buff on than without the buff.

So I asked around, but not sure anymore, do the elemental damages split if the infusion and the buff are not the same? In which case can I actually do less dmg sometimes with a buff?

Old Dragonslayer thoughts, years and years later

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 02:45 PM PDT

I'm just curious to hear you guys out. For me, I think Targray is probably a scumbag or liar to some extent, he left after the fall of Drangleic, found the Old Leo ring, and is using it to guard the temple. Anyone who can defeat the shadow is able to talk to him.

    Strategy for beating Greatshield?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 01:21 PM PDT

So I think I've got quite used to fighting against popular PVP weapons (Katanas, straight sword, thrusting swords, etc). But I still don't have any ideas on how to fight against Greatshield users (They are almost unbreakable if they wield spears). I tried using guard break but it hardly works on Xbox gamepad when it is needed. Is there any strategies to counter greatshield turtles other than using guard break?

Need some advice/tips on a int/faith build for a new run.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 01:08 PM PDT

Finishing up a soulsborne run in anticipation of Finally getting to play Demon's souls. DS2 is the last one I have to play and it's also the one I'm least familiar with, having only done one run with a quality build.

Someone told me that going a "Dark Hex" build is really fun for PVE, which is all I care to do. I guess I'd mostly want to be a caster while not being useless in melee. So what should I be looking for early game or things that are a must for this build? Stat allocation?

    Thanks for the help

What are some good spells to use?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 12:55 PM PDT

So I'm mostly a melee build with 40/40 on dex and str, but now I started going for faith/int as well. Currently 18 INT/28 faith. So far I just used weapon buffs -flame,dark weapon-, but thinking about getting att to 13, to get a 2. slot I could use to kill some of the more annoying mobs from afar. So would need a good ranged spell with preferably high usage, any recommendation? Also what would be the best catalyst/staff, whatever for it? PVE only.

(Side questions, does the buffing weapon matter when determining the effect of a weapon buff? like does a +10 pyro tome make flame weapon better than a +0?, or it's only depends on stats?)

Black Knight Halberd without investing in faith?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 10:59 AM PDT

Guys, I'm playing DS2 for the first time and would like some build tips. Right now I'm about soul level 100 with 40/40 in str/dex but absolutely nothing in faith and intelligence. My faith is 6, so I would have to put 3 more points into it to use the black halberd.

Would it be worth it to stop at 9 faith just to be able to use this halberd, or maybe something like the Mastodon halberd would be better? Those are the two options I'm considering right now.

    DS2 Harder than DS1

    Posted: 02 Apr 2021 11:57 PM PDT

If you don't wanna read all this just the last two paragraphs should do the trick!

Hey everyone. I just started my first playthrough of dark souls 2 (Sotfs on PC using Xbox controller). I've played DS1 a lot, but this is my first game in the series other than DS1. I was really afraid the series would be too difficult for me as I haven't really played any action/combat-focussed games before, but I gotta say, DS1 was pretty easy for me. Getting to the first bell was a pretty steep learning curve, but the rest of the game was pretty smooth for me. The only boss I really got stuck on was Manus, and getting through the levels was also pretty easy once I learned the layout and enemy placement.

DS2 is really hard though so far by comparison. I'm in the forest of the fallen giants and the game is kicking my ass. I'm having trouble getting used to the feel of the combat after getting used to DS1.

So, what are your tips for getting a good start in DS2? What are important things I might not know coming from DS1? Is there something important I've missed? I'm going for a dex build (I also did a dex build in DS1, mainly used the estoc and the balder side sword with the heater shield). I started with the warrior and the petrified something. I got a demons greathammer out of the petrified something, so not much use for a dex build. I've only leveled up once (I put one point in dex), I've unlocked the blacksmith, and I've been using the rapier he sells.

I guess my main question after all that is: what's the deal? Am I doing something wrong or is DS2 SOTFS just a lot harder than DS1? Or do I just need more time to get used to it?

Does anybody else find parrying to be the easiest in DS2?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 03:05 AM PDT

I've played all of the Souls games over the last 8 or so years as well as Bloodborne and Sekiro. Now, it's been a few years since I played any Souls and I just got back into them. I've been playing Bloodborne, DS, and DS2.

What I've noticed is that DS2 is way easier than I remember it being. People always complained that it was clunky, but I've found it the most fluid to play especially when playing with the camera unlocked.

What's also kinda crazy is that I've just been parrying the entire world in PvP and PvE so far with the crimson parka at like 90% success rate. Back in the good old days, I used to PvP all the time at Iron Keep, but I was not that great. Same with DS3. So, I'm wondering if the newer games like Sekiro have just made my reaction times much better or if DS2 is just the easy game when it comes to parrying.

As a casual coming from Dark Souls: Remastered, should I worry about Memory?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2021 06:19 AM PDT

    Hi!

So I just finished Dark Souls for the first time and am on a journey to play them all. I started yesterday in Dark Souls 2 and I'm starting to worry I'm screwing mysef over.

I've been participating in quite a bit of jolly cooperation, using my Small Soapstone whenever I wanna become Human again. I've also just joined the Sunbros cuz I wanna help people out!

But by this I was over Lv 50 before my third boss. I'm over 80 now, making my way through the woods, having recently killed the ScorpGirl, and also the Covetous Demon in Earthen Peak.

I feel like I already see fewer signs on the ground and I heard about the Agape ring. I'm worried I'm going to punish myself for helping out too much and levelling too fast?

What I'm hoping is for someone to tell me that as a new casual player I can safely ignore the mechanic and continue cooperating. But if y'all say it's dangerous and I should manage my Memory, I guess I could but I hope I don't have to. The goal being not to lock myself out of the people I wanna help and connect to.

    Thanks for your feedback!!
