    First impression and Emerald Herald

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:46 PM PDT

Heya! I'm a few hours in on my first PT of DS2, and I do enjoy it plenty! Trying to get used to the things that differs from DS1 too.

One thing I'm curious about though, why did they've moved the level up menu away from bon fires and to the Emerald Herald? With free travel between bon fires, all this seems to do is adding extras step for leveling up, with the jump back to Majula + interaction. Is it a lore thing, or other reason of this design?

Other than that, I enjoy the changes from the DS1, fast travel from start, fast climbing and dropping from ladders, the lowered max health is cruel but I love the challenge! Torches in dark areas is an awesome addition, really atmospheric lighting! I'm really looking forward to play though this game, so hyped!

New game plus has truly impressed me in ds2

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 11:39 AM PDT

I've finished ds1, 2 and 3 many times but I never played NG+ until recently. Ds1 and 3 were much easier on NG+ except for the Ringed City. Basically the same experience as the first.

Ds2 NG+ is on another level my friends. Sorry if I'm late to the party. I had a moment of mad respect when I got to bottom of the bastille and saw an enemy I'd never seen before. The Enhanced Undead. Scared the shit out of me. Subverted all my expectations.

One of my favorite youtubers "Marz Plays" has finally started playing DS2 and the amount of DS2 haters in the comments and her twitch chat is staggering.

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 02:54 PM PDT

I descovered her a few years ago when she first started her BB let's play and she's played all the rest of the series over the years (out of order but that's alright because so did I) and when she finally got to DS2 all the shit head DS2 bandwagon haters swarm her comments on those videos and her twitch chat is backseating/shit trolling her whole playthrough.

I guess I'm just venting about it here because I get a bit triggered from how DS2 gets so much HATE. They blow it's flaws way out of proportion and overlook all the flaws in the other games.

Also I hope everyone had a fruitful Return To Drangleic and I hope to see you all in Yharnam in a few days. Good blessings skeletons and may the good blood guide your way \`[T] /

    Basic tips and help

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 02:42 PM PDT

    Hey,

so I recently finished DS1 and decided to start with 2. I knew that it was much different from DS1, but damn this game is really hard for me. Went to the forest and killed Last Giant and then to Heide's Tower and killed this guy with his spear. Leveld ADP up to 17 and I'm looking to get Str and Dex up as well to use better weapons. Should I continue with Forest or go to No Man's? Do you guys have basic tips what to do (weapons, armor, items) And what the heck are you supposed to do with that torch? The game is just straight up confusing for me. Thx for replies ;)

Getting back into this game, need build ideas. Not into role play just need weapon/stat ideas.

Is there a stat that is associated with that or is that just how it is?

    Question

    Question

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:56 PM PDT

I thought the DLC was supposed to be better...

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:55 PM PDT

So I beat the base game, and although the beginning is miserable, (thank you adaptability stat...) I started to enjoy the game. The biggest complaint I have is the overall cheapness of certain areas. Shrine of amana is just terrible... but I actually did have fun with the game overall. I was happy to start the DLC, as its often regarded as the best part of the game...

20 min into the sunken city and I absolutely hate it. So much cheap, unfun stuff.

    1. platforming right from the get go (stop with the platforming already, this is DS, not Mario)
    2. annoying ranged enemies everywhere (seems like every fight, there is some skeleton archer hitting me from behind
    3. all enemies have poison attacks
    4. moving poison statues that are INVULNERABLE
    5. traps everywhere, even when in a room full of enemies
    6. pots that degrade equipment when broken. What a great game mechanic. Nothing like traveling back to base to repair equipment and traveling back to where you were. Yay for 2 loading screens!
    7. ghosts that can attack you, but you cant attack them until you find their bodies. This would be fine if the bodies were close to the enemies, but they arent. I am in this one room with 3 of them. There are spikes on the floor and a caster shooting from above. The worst part of all is that THE GHOSTS BLOCK YOUR MOVEMENT. So just picture this scenario. You are running from 3 phantoms and a ranged spellcaster you cant reach. You are searching for their bodies to make them vulnerable. Oh wait you went to a dead end, or bridge or got stuck in a corner. You cant hit them back or roll through them and you die...

Remember, this is the first 20 min!

Its the same old crap that makes this game subpar when compared to 1 and 3. Copy pasted groups of enemies with no thought on level design or how a fight would play out. Does it get any better? or should I just move on?

Wondering what is a good weapon you can get quite early?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 10:33 AM PDT

I'm quite early in the game and am wondering if the weapon I am using is good and if I could get a better one at my stage, I have the boss souls of the dragonrider, last giant, pursuer and rat, if that gives you a good Idea of where I'm at (my current weapon is rapier since I was told it was quite good)

So I'm about 40 hrs into dark souls 2

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:02 PM PDT

I want to like this game, I really do. But this game tries way too hard to piss you off

Good things about darks souls 2:

    The sorcery options are amazing

    The bonfire teleport is handy

The options you have in terms if builds out the gate is good.

    Bonfire ascetics.

    Gameplay is slower and fun.

    It's a souls game.

There are many more things I like, but there are some things that just piss me off way too much for me to enjoy this game tbh

The health degradation is annoying, but not too bad at all since effigies arent too hard to come by and the ring exists

Melee weapons blatantly missing while locked onto enemies and whiffing.

The fucking gank squads. That slow methodical gameplay doesnt suit large ganksquads. Especially annoying when using a pure caster before soul greatsword

The bosses are shite. Compared to bb and ds3, the bosses are terrible. The only good, enjoyable boss I've fought so far is the looking glass knight and maybe the ruin sentinels. But the area before looking glass knight is horse but whole gank fest.

Most areas in this game absolutely, 100% suck balls. Shrine of Amana, Earthen peak, iron keep, black gulch, the gutter. If the area isnt downright shit, it has to have one mildly irritating enemy that just has an aspect to them that's bs. Think white heides knight, desert sorceresses, no lock on ghosts, exploding suicide bombers or undead crypt fucking hooded ghost 3 swing stunlock.

    Adaptability

Look all in all it's a souls game, so it's obviously going to be difficult the first time you play it. But there are so many needlessly artificially difficult things in this game that just serve to not make the game better but more annoying. Poison, corrosive acid, health degradation on death etc while on their own arent much but when they're mixed together it just makes an unfun experience all around.

That's just my opinion. I'll probably finish the game, play the DLCs and maybe play through on new game plus but after that I think I'm done. Just had to get this off my chest. Thanks for reading

    Cave of the Dead Walkthrough

    Posted: 21 Mar 2021 07:17 AM PDT

The Cave of the Dead itself doesn't get as many complaints so much as just the boss does, but hey we're doing the whole thing anyway.

    Video Walkthrough

    What to bring

    • Petrify resistance - The spitting statues deal a surprisingly small amount of petrification buildup and it's pretty easy to reduce that to a negligible amount. The Ash Knuckle Ring gives massive 400 resistance all on its own, The Ring of Resistance adds 120 or 200 depending on which version you have, Triclops Snake Troches add 200 more, and if you can cast it Perseverance adds 300 (but overrides Troches). Unlike elemental resistance there's no hard cap, so you can get over 900 Petrify resist and be completely immune.
    • Yearn or Alluring Skulls - Distracts the Sanctum Soldiers patrolling the area so you can just walk past.
    • (Optional) Lightning infused weapons - There's water in the boss arena which reduces their Lightning resistance.
    • (Optional) Dark Fog/Poison Mist - Either for cheesing the boss or dealing some DoT while you're running.
    • (Optional) Old Bell Helm or Minotaur Helm - Both helmets negate headshot stagger. It's not strictly necessary, but there's a few places where an unlucky headshot can snowball into death.

    Running the Caves

If you're immune to Petrify (or close to it) and have enough Alluring Skulls and/or casts of Yearn then the only danger in the run itself is getting lost (or taking a lucky hit from the worm in the wall). Follow the video guide for the direct route, or explore around and get some sweet loot (yes I went back and got the shiny things after I recorded). The basic route is:

    • Drop down the hole directly across from and slightly to the right of the entrance.
    • Go straight ahead to the hallway to the next drop.
    • Run through the last gauntlet to the fog wall.

It's fairly short and simple as long as you don't get turned around.

    The Gank Squad

I'm fairly certain this boss fight was designed for a host and at least 2 Sunbros to even the odds. Unfortunately there aren't as many players these days and the NPCs are not capable of pulling their weight. There are still ways to win without much skill, but it's not as impressive. Basically you just continuously run in circles (or figure 8s) around the arena abusing minor pathing quirks (or errors) in the AI to split them up long enough to get one or two hits in.

Cerah the Old Explorer (aka Bow Bastard)

The ranged support class of the party. The other two you can mostly ignore as long as you keep moving and they aren't in your way. This guy will knock you on your ass from across the arena the second you take your eyes off him. Luckily he's the weakest and squishiest member of the party but even then he's not a pushover. If you get close he'll whip out an Estoc and he actually knows how to use its full moveset effectively. Not just R1 spam. His biggest weakness is his passiveness. Since he stands still whenever you're not behind cover or directly threatening him, he's the most vulnerable to Dark Fog. Poison/Toxic Mist is a little more risky because it's slower to cast and might require you to enter Estoc range. At 2,500 HP in NG it'll take 3 poisonings to kill him if you can't sneak some hits in directly.

    Kill. This. Asshole. First.

    Afflicted Graverobber (aka Katana Bitch)

The DPS of the party. She's easily the most aggressive of the bunch and exhibits slightly better pathing than Varg. If you stop moving for too long, you're most likely going to get a Berserker Blade suppository. But that's also her weakness. If you can get a good loop going, she'll pretty reliably get out of range of her tank and you'll be able to get some hits in. She has enough poise to win trades if you're not careful so your best bet is to dodge directly into her attacks and stagger with a rolling attack. She's mostly too mobile to get with poison, but she can be reliably chipped down if you're patient. Just don't get greedy because Varg isn't ever far behind.

    Ancient Soldier Varg (aka Not-Havel)

The tank of the party, and he's pretty good at it. If you focus your attention on him he'll block and delay and do everything he can to make sure you do as little as possible while the rest of the party surround you. And if you ignore him he's going to come right up behind you and smash you flat. To top it all off, he remembered to bring his estus flask so if you try to chip him down like the others he'll just sip Sunny D and reverse all your progress. If there's one weakness to him it's that he can't cover his support while being led in circles and can't cover his DPS properly when she goes chasing the player. He's just a tiny bit slower than the Graverobber and hesitates just a little bit longer on drops so it leaves an opening for you to get damage in. Once he's on his own he's still a dangerous opponent, but his passive playstyle and slow weapon makes him vulnerable to concentrated aggression. Keep the pressure on him and he'll crack eventually.

    The Cheese Strat

I'll just admit straight up that I don't know how to do this. I've tried it before and I could never get in position under pressure. I'm bad enough at precision movement when I'm not being chased. If you can kill Cerah and get into position then the fight is as simple as casting Poison Mist and munching herbs while the NPCs try helplessly to reach you. It's the easiest way to win, but it also comes with risks. If you fall off, you land near spitting statues and can quickly get stunned and surrounded.

If you want to attempt it, feel free. Ymfah has a video showing off how to do it and there's a few others out there too.
