Tip that I don't see anyone mentioning for new players : Purging stones are a lot cheaper from Oswald compared to the undead Merchant lady.

Since the Depths will inevitably land a lot of new players (such as myself) into a Basilisk-den and curse them, I feel like this is a helpful thing to know.

The trek back to any of those two NPCs is long, and obviously not easy if you only get half of your HP. But if you really want to get the best value for your souls, and you're expecting to get cursed again and just want to be prepared in advance, Oswalds' purging stones are a lot cheaper.

Undead lady sells them for 6,000 souls. Oswald sells them for just 3,000. So you get 2 from him for the price of just one from the Undead Lady. Granted, making it back to Undead Parish with half health (in which you'll come across 3 hollow soldiers outside and have to fight the big horde of hollows on the 2nd floor), might take a few tries, but it's worth it if you can't afford 6,000 souls (and you can rest at the bonfires there anyway).

Plus, shouldn't be too hard if you're backtracking using the Firelink shortcut. Note though that purging stones are limited in stock, and the NPCs don't restock them after you buy all of them. So the best thing you can do is just be super careful that you don't get cursed again.

Does anyone else get kinda tired of the whole "You (the player character) are an asshole because the bosses you fight have sad back stories" narrative?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 05:38 AM PST

I'm not sure if this viewpoint is as wide spread as it used to be, but I personally have always despised the idea that your player character in these games is just the worst kind of person because many of the bosses that they kill end up having woefully tragic backstories. Do people forget that most of these bosses are complete asswipes who attack you on sight without any provocation?

Take Pinwheel for example. Youtubers like VaatiVidya painted this boss fight as you interrupting his research just as he was on the cupse of a breakthrough. Whether or not that was even the case, that doesn't justify Pinwheel turning around and immediately trying to kill your ass just because you fell down a hole. The actual interaction would be more like:

Pinwheel: "Oh shit, who the hell are you?"

Chosen Undead: "Ah, hey there. Chosen Undead, savior of the world and all that. Sorry for scaring ya, but do you know how to get to the Tomb of the Giants? I'm looking for Gravelord Nito."

Pinwheel: "Yeah yeah, take the ladder here on my left and head on up. Just follow the lights."

    Chosen Undead: "Cool cool, thanks."

At least that's how I imagine most players would be like if Pinwheel didn't freak out and attack you. Obviously in certain instances I could see the CU being a complete dick, such as killing the Fair Lady or Pricsilla, but those are optional. The actual bosses that you need to kill in order to progress don't warrant the same sympathy because they themselves are the aggressors 90% of the time.

I think the one boss fight where this mindset holds any kind of water is Great Grey Wolf Sif, especially if you have done Artorias of the Abyss prior. Yeah it sucks having to kill this big animal who literally starts limping as the fight goes on, but again, Sif is the one instigating the battle, not you. Whether it is out of a sense of duty or not, Sif, and most bosses, attack you and leave you no choice but to defend yourself.

I dunno, sorry for the psuedo rant but I had been thinking about this for a while and it had always annoyed me.

TL;DR Most Dark Souls bosses attack you on sight, and you shouldn't be perceived as a douchebag for killing them just because they have sad backstories.

EDIT: Some people are having a really hard time understanding this, or I just worded this weirdly, but I AM NOT SAYING THAT THE STORY AND THEMES OF DARK SOULS SHOULD BE MORE SIMPLE AND BLACK/WHITE. I don't really see how you would glean other wise from my post, but my post is addressing members of the community who feel that the Chosen Undead is a bad person because he kills bosses who have sad backstories, when in reality my post GLORIFIES the more nuanced moral dilemmas of the game. Instead of saying "The CU is an asshole because he killed so and so boss", it should be "I feel bad for that boss, but I know that the CU had no choice and would likely have opted for a peaceful approach if it were an option."

    Hopefully that cleared things up.

EDIT 2: Putting it up here so people will see. I got a little too snappy in some of the replies below due to my misunderstanding of what some comments were trying to convey, which led to my first edit up above. I apologize for these comments. It is not my intention to spark any ill will or toxicity, and I'll have better faith in the community going forward.

Last week, I beat Dark Souls on a guitar hero controller without taking a single hit.

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 11:40 AM PST

I've been doing no-hit runs for a while, and about a year or so ago I noticed that although people have done no-hit runs and guitar hero runs, it seemed like nobody managed to get a no-hit run WITH a guitar hero controller before, presumably because most people have common sense. Lucky for me, I don't have that issue so I decided to take on the challenge!

This is a pretty exciting run for me as it's actually the last game in the trilogy that I've managed to no-hit. I did Dark Souls 3 in the summer of last year, I got Dark Souls 2 last December, and finally got this one last week.

If you've never heard of a no-hit run before, it's basically finishing the entire game without getting hit. That means no blocking, no staggers, no damage from enemies, no hits from traps, and no unscripted deaths. Self-damage, fall damage, and environmental damage are allowed.

The rules I set up for the guitar hero controller is that ALL movement and combat had to be done on a guitar hero controller. If my character is moving or attacking, I can only do so with the guitar hero controller, no exceptions. However, because I'm using a guitar hero controller, I don't have the available buttons to do everything in the game that I need to do to beat the game without getting hit, so to get around that I allow myself to rebind my controls with my keyboard, but only outside of combat so it doesn't affect the difficulty of the run.

Funny enough, I actually beat Gwyn with the wrong weapon, so instead of having to parry him just twice, I had to go for five parries. Luckily I stayed focused and managed to do it, but in the moment it really shook me up.

Here's a link to the full vod: https://youtu.be/I_944868NMM (Sorry to everyone in Syria, Cuba, North Korea, and Iran, but I'm too lazy to remove the copyright strike on the video. :( The vod is up on my twitch channel as well!)

Is there a good way to learn the lore of dark souls while playing?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 11:56 PM PST

I think the lore is really interesting and would love to learn it, but it seems like I can never find anything in game so I have to watch videos on youtube. Tips?

I just beat black dragon kalameet

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 12:21 AM PST

and it was epic. I saw Hawkeye Gough just snipe the dragon out of the sky and I went down the valley and slew him in one try, using my scumbag build (havel's set, +5 bkh, wolf ring, ring of FaP). It was so cool.

I've seen LobosJR doing this back in the day in an old video on the P2D edition but I didn't found anyone doing this in the Remaster so I'm guessing I'm the first one so far but I might be wrong so let me know if someone did it before. https://streamable.com/0k0vxo

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 09:11 PM PST

Why does this hurt me so...? I didn't want to. I WASNT TRYING TO HIT HER! And also, Patches hates me, which sucks, and I liked him.... Anyway, please tell me there's a way to revive NPCs?

    Quick question:

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 09:49 PM PST

I have just bought Dark Souls 3, and on a scale from "1" to "I want to burn down an orphanage", how infuriating is this game? I know it is one of the hardest games out there, so it's probably somewhere above For Honor and Cuphead.

just got the plat on DSR!!!

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 04:41 PM PST

    wow.

i spent months struggling through the game (i believe my previous post on Reddit was me celebrating getting to Anor Londo) until i finally beat it a couple of weeks back.

the ending left me wanting more, so i decided to 100% the game w/ my pyro character. it was awesome feeling my improvement as a player, in NG taking around 15-20hrs to ring both bells and in NG++ doing that in a little over an hour.

i've grown to love the game and cannot wait to begin w/ a new character (i'm thinking a sorcerer with some pyro, not sure). i also am really looking forward to playing through the rest of the Soulsborne titles.

My non-gamer girlfriend beat O&S on her second try (with arguable overpowered character).

    Posted: 15 Feb 2021 11:05 AM PST

    She doesn't game. See:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/kwqzw0/my_nongamer_girlfriend_beat_the_bell_gargoyles_on/

    Build: Dex. (40)

    Level: 85

    Weapon: Ugi/pryoflame

Gear: Havels Armor, Crest Shield ( She used the stone armour for a lot of the game because she liked how it looked. )

Rings: Havel / Ring of Favor and Protection

The biggest challenge of the game is knowing where to go, what you can get when, what works best for you and how to upgrade it.

I do the grindy things for her, like grinding enough souls to upgrade her pyromancy. She was pretty much handed great fireballs to throw without asking, buy only because she didnt understand how important ranged combat can be at times.

But decisions on where to explore, all boss battles and how to progress its been all up to her. She's the one that decided to kill petrus because she sensed he was a bad guy. That did not end how she hoped. She also decided to kill knight laurentic... It took a lot of tries to pull it off.

I give advice when it makes sense, usually to save her time from getting stuck on a section forever, replaying it endlessly. Otherwise I belly laugh as I watch her fall into the traps so many players have throughout the years.

I explained Soliiare needs saving or he dies later and that became her priority. After watching all the other NPCs dying, often because she said yes or no to the wrong question... or attacked the wrong person at the wrong time...she is getting depressed.

My method for fighting O&S was to run away, let O get close, smack him, run away again. Hers was to attack Ornstein outright, tanking hits from both enemies. Didn't work the first time but the second she started dodge rolling and she managed to pull it off. Ornstein fell quickly to her +10ugi with her 40 dex stat. Supercharger Smough was harded for her, yet fell all the same. It's so weird how trivial some of these fights are if you plan ahead properly.

After every boss fight victory, she is always exhausted mentally and takes a small break.

I explained that after New Anor Londo she could upgrade her ugi to +14. She was then very insistent about getting a slab so she decided to return to the Asylum to fight the basement demon she couldnt beat earlier when she came back for the Rusted Iron Ring.

Onward and upward...i wonder if she will play the dlc...

Angry Red Phantom Looking Guards in Anor Londo

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 01:17 AM PST

So I've beaten DS many times but I haven't played it in a long while. I continued my last save file and found myself at the Anor Londo bonfire ready to fight O&S. As I leave the bonfire a see a red phantom that looks exactly like the knight you first encounter at the stairs. As I progress I see more of these coming after me. Where did these come from? I don't ever remember seeing them on previous play throughs. Thanks.

I've been playing DS remastered on and off for a few months, and have just finished the bell gargoyles - where am i supposed to go next?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 03:59 AM PST

I went into the garden-y place and got my ass handed to me. Same thing happened after I used the crest of Artorias to open the door, so I ended up unequipping everything and sprinting through only to find a very obvious boss area and using a homeward bone to go back to the bonfire near the blacksmith. I've spoken to the guy near the closed gate with the onion helmet, but he's just saying "still closed" on a loop at this point. Anybody know where I'm meant to be going because I have no clue.

Any good resources to read about lore and the world?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 03:58 AM PST

Hey guys, first post on this sub so sorry if this has been posted before: One of my favourite things about the souls borne series is creating a character to roleplay with. Whenever I play older Elder Scrolls games I always put a lot of time into researching the homeland and culture my character comes from, and thinking through how it would affect my in game decisions.

I'd love to give this a go with my next dark souls run, but I don't have a good enough understanding of the world to create a character that would fit into it. I get the impression that Astora is a fairly affluent land of nobles and medieval sensibilities, people from Carim are 'hella sus' as the youths say, and Catarina seems like a fun place to be, but other than that I don't have a good enough understanding of the world. What is the way of the white and how would a devoted cleric act on a pilgrimage? How would a savage mountain bandit end up in the undead asylum despite presumably being a long way from society? Where exactly is Wales Zena and what kind of weapons do they use?

If anyone could direct me to some resources that would help me research this I'd really appreciate it. Thanks friends, and don't you dare go hollow.

    This sub should allow images

    Posted: 16 Feb 2021 03:51 AM PST

I love to see that this sub has lots of active people, especially since this is an old game, we are keeping this game active and that's great. However, this sub is sort of that same discussions, a few questions from people starting the game, and that's about it. The bloodborne sub started to allow images and memes and it became much more fun and lively, I know this post probably will get removed but whatever.
