Literal translation and commentary on Darkstalker Kaathe dialogue Posted: 15 Apr 2021 01:36 PM PDT I'm going through DS1 and analysing the Japanese subtitles for any interesting morsels of lore. If you enjoy this post, check out what I already did for the DS1 opening cinematic, and the Elden Ring trailer. I chose Darkstalker Kaathe's Abyss dialogue because I remember this being a significant lore dump. I might look at Frampt's dialogue next. Please comment with any suggestions for future material. Video I used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAimaFZFc9k English voice-over: Greetings, undead warrior! Japanese subtitles: …ようこそ、不死の勇者よ Japanese romaji: … youkoso, fushi no yuusha yo Literal translation: ...Welcome, brave undead! Comments:
English voice-over: I am the primordial serpent, Darkstalker Kaathe Japanese subtitles: 我は、世界の蛇、闇撫でのカアス Japanese romaji: ware ha, sekai no hebi, yaminade de no kaasu Literal translation: I am the world snake, Kaathe, dark toucher/carer? Comments:
English voice-over: I can guide thee, and illuminate the truth Japanese subtitles: 貴公ら人を導き、真実を伝える者だ Japanese romaji: kikoura hito wo michibiki, shinjitsu wo tsutaeru mono da Literal translation: I am someone who will guide you people such as yourselves, and impart the truth to you. Comments:
It's interesting that the Japanese has a different perspective to the English. The English is like "I do X and Y", whereas the Japanese is "I am the one who does X and Y". This perhaps supports the idea that he is addressing undead as a whole, since it makes sense for him to say "I am the one who guides undead, and tells them the truth". His goal is to reach out for undead, like Frampt does, and find the chosen undead to lead into the next age. English voice-over: The truth I will share without sentiment Japanese subtitles: では、我は隠さず真実を語ろう Japanese romaji: dewa, ware wa kakusazu shinjitsu wo katarou Literal translation: Well, I shall speak of the truth without hiding (anything). Comments:
English voice-over: After the advent of fire, the ancient lords found the three souls. But your progenitor found a fourth, unique soul. The Dark Soul. Japanese subtitles: …かつて火のはじまり、貴公ら人の先祖は 古い王たちの後に、四つ目のソウルを見出した。闇のソウルだ。 Japanese romaji: ...katsute hi no hajimari, kikoura hito no senzo wa furui outachi no ato ni, yotsu me no souru wo midashita. yami no souru da. Literal translation: (At) fire's beginning, your (all of your) ancestors, after the old lords, once found a fourth soul. The dark soul. Comments:
English voice-over: Your ancestor claimed the Dark Soul, and waited for fire to subside Japanese subtitles: 貴公ら人の先祖は、闇のソウルを得て、火の後を待った Japanese romaji: kihoura hito no senzo ha, yami no souru wo ete, hi no ato wo matta Literal translation: Your ancestor received/acquired the dark soul, and waited for after the fire Comments:
English voice-over: Soon, the flames did fade, and only dark remained. Thus began the Age of Men. The Age of Dark. Japanese subtitles: やがて火は消え、闇ばかりが残る さすれば、貴公ら人、闇の時代だ Japanese romaji: yagate hi wa kie, yami bakari ga nokoru sasureba, kikoura hito, yami no jidai da Literal translation: Soon fire went out, and only darkness was left. Therefore, this was the age of your (/your people's), of the dark. Comments:
English voice-over: However, Lord Gwyn trembled at the dark, clinging to his Age of Fire, and in dire fear of humans, and the dark lord who would one day be born among them. Japanese subtitles: …だが、王グウィンは、闇を恐れた 火の終わりを恐れ、闇の者たる人を恐れ 人の闇から生まれるであろう、闇の王を恐れ Japanese romaji: ...daga, ou guuin wa, yami wo osoreta hi no owari wo osore, yami no mono taru hito wo osore hito no yami kara umareru de arou, yami no ou wo osore Literal translation: But, Gwyn feared the dark, feared the end of fire, feared the person who would come from the dark, feared the lord of the dark, who would be born from the people of the dark. Comments:
English voice-over: Lord Gwyn resisted the course of nature, by sacrificing himself to link the fire, and commanding his children to shepherd the humans. Japanese subtitles: 世界の理をおそれた だから奴は、火を継ぎ、自らの息子たちに、人を率い、縛らせた Japanese romaji: sekai no ri wo osoreta dakara yatsu wa, hi wo tsugi, mizukara no musuko tachi ni, hito wo hikii, shibaraseta Literal translation: He feared the nature/principles of the world Therefore that guy rekindled/fed the fire, and made his sons command and control humans Comments:
English voice-over: Gwyn has blurred your past, to prevent the birth of the Dark Lord. Japanese subtitles: 貴公ら人が、すべて忘れ、呆け、闇の王が生まれぬように Japanese romaji: kikoura hito ga, subete wasure, boke, yami no ou ga umarenu youni Literal translation: He made you (all) forget everything, confused you, in order for the dark lord not to be born. Comments:
English voice-over: I am the primordial serpent. I seek to right the wrongs of the past, to discover our true lord. But the other serpent, Frampt, lost his sense, and befriended Lord Gwyn. Japanese subtitles: … 我は世界の蛇 正しい時代を、王を探すもの だが、もう1人の蛇、フラムトは、理を忘れ 王グウィンの友に堕した Japanese romaji: ...ware wa sekai no hebi tadashii jidai wo, ou wo sagasu mono da ga, mou hitori no hebi, furamuto wa, ri wo wasure ou guuin no tomo ni dashita Literal translation: I am a world snake I am one that seeks the correct age, and the lord But another snake, Frampt, lost his reason, and degenerated into lord gwyn's friendship Comments:
English voice-over: Undead warrior, we stand at a crossroads. Only I know the truth about your fate. You must destroy the fading Lord Gwyn, who has coddled fire and resisted nature, and become the fourth Lord (...) Japanese subtitles: よいか、不死の勇者よ 我カアスが、貴公に、正しい使命を伝えよう 理に反して火を継ぎ、今や消えかけの王グウィンを殺し そして、四人目の王となり、闇の時代をもたらすのだ Japanese romaji: yoika, fushi no yuusha yo ware kaasu ga, kikou ni, tadashii shimei wo tsutae you ri ni hanshite hi wo tsugi, imaya kiekake no ou guuin wo koroshi soshite, yonnin me no ou to nari, yami no jidai wo motarasu no da Literal translation: What shall you/we do, brave undead! I, Kaathe, I will convey the correct destiny to the humans Kill the fading Lord Gwyn who opposes nature and kindles the fire, and then become the fourth lord, and bring about the age of dark Comments:

A List of All Boss Weaknesses and Upgrades Posted: 15 Apr 2021 07:29 AM PDT Hey, I am new here i wanted to contribute something to this board for a while now. I created a spreadsheet with all boss weaknesses and weapon upgrades. I LOVE Dark Souls and couldn't find any list combining these two so i though hey i could try it. Heres my attempt if I made any errors or if you guys want me to enhance something just ask me. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1k_cihIDnNSndEw3iVspu_34Pa30SYxWuzK3q1aaXAGs/edit?usp=sharing Edit1: I have added Chaos scaling with humanity and damage calculation. Thanks for the help! Now I’m scared Posted: 15 Apr 2021 09:54 PM PDT I wanted to thank you guys for the help in setting me on the right track for the second bell! On a second note, am I the only one who found the depths and blightown absolutely terrifying? I fell down a hole and spent like 30 minutes trying to find my way through the frogs and rats and even an invasion while trying not to lose my 20k souls. Scarier than any horror game I've ever played. tl;dr fuck the sewers [link] [comments] |

Why is watching boss fights of this game so entertaining? Posted: 15 Apr 2021 12:55 PM PDT There are many, many games that I love, but Dark Souls is probably the only one that I love watching videos of on youtube. Especially boss fights. My guess is that since I've played the game, I know the struggles and rewards, and can easily connect with another person's gameplay. It's also fun seeing other playstyles and strategies. There are so many ways to win boss battles. I don't know about anybody else, but when I'm bored, watching boss fights on youtube is a great way to pass time. [link] [comments] |
The way this game trains you on its mechanics through its level design is brilliant Posted: 15 Apr 2021 01:18 PM PDT I'm replaying DS for the first time in awhile. When I first beat this game years back, I admittedly wasn't very good. I pretty much brute forced my way through with heavy armor, high magic, and lots of backstabs. Couldn't parry one of those early undeads to save my life. And I thought one of the cruelest early game parts was that right, immediately after fisting you with that giant armored boar, the game sends you into those skinny little hallways with the spear jackasses and Baldur Knight jerks with no bonfire in-between. Parrying. Those tiny hallways are to teach you parrying. [link] [comments] |
Just killed the Hellkite Drake with melee! New personal achievement! Posted: 15 Apr 2021 11:19 PM PDT I've done it with a greatbow before, but I usually just ignore it once I open up the shortcut, so I think this is the first time I've done it... in like 1500 hours of playing this game lmao [link] [comments] |
Is Kalameet harder or is O&S harder? Posted: 15 Apr 2021 04:26 PM PDT DLC bosses were kind of wierd for me i havent got to manus yet i beat guardian and artorias first try but kalameet took me six tries, same with O&S which means that so far they are tied for most deaths thoughts? which is harder? It Seems Like Enemies Stop Dropping Items After Being Killed to Many Times Posted: 15 Apr 2021 06:53 PM PDT So I'm farming souvenirs of reprisal. 410 item discovery, it's going great at first. Within an hour or so I'm at 6, i started off with a few that i picked up earlier but still, at a 6% drop rate i didn't expect it to be to bad. Since then I've been at it for almost 2 hours straight and not even one has dropped. Even tried reloading my save thinking that might reset something. I've looked around and everyone who's mentioned something like this gets the replies that it's just bad RNG but damn it does not feel like it. Anyone think this might be the case or am i just that unlucky? [link] [comments] |
Would the invader in this stream please stand up, you're a bloody legend! Posted: 15 Apr 2021 04:25 PM PDT Watching OutsideExtra playing ds1 and they were invaded onstream by the nicest, most chill phantom. Helped ellen through the dukes archive and left some nice but not op gifts. It didn't appear to be someone from chat, so if you're here Charlotte, that was good phantoming! 56:39 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Apr 2021 03:18 PM PDT I recently played through Demon's Souls and beat it and that gave me the interest and confidence to give Dark Souls a try. Beat Dark Souls, went to Dark Souls 2, beat that, just now finished Dark Souls 3. I'd beaten Bloodborne a couple years back. Now I guess its time to give Sekiro another go. Ah, I remember my first time beating orinstine and smough Posted: 15 Apr 2021 05:31 PM PDT Literally broke down on the floor and cried, it's nice to absolutely make them my bitch now though. [link] [comments] |
Is Sif actually a difficult boss or do I just need to git gud? Posted: 15 Apr 2021 06:01 AM PDT I defeated every other previous boss in 1-3 attempts, Sif took me at least 50-60 attempts, just seemed like Sif was very fast and unpredictable, range and damage were exceptional, used the Black Knight Sword. Anyone experience similar results? [link] [comments] |
If I reverse hollowing, when i die do i go back to being hollow? Posted: 16 Apr 2021 03:45 AM PDT Title mostly says it all, if I do it when I die will I go back to being hollow or is the state permanent as I'm not sure weather I should do it or not as I have some items in my inventory just called 'Humanity' I can use to gain some. Or should i just leave it if the humanity items are useful later? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Apr 2021 01:00 PM PDT I need to reduce my faith requirement, but my Dark Souls discords and the summon sign Reddit are coming up blank right now. So where is the best place to place down the white soapstone and just hope someone summons me? [link] [comments] |
Favorite “areas” in Dark Souls Posted: 15 Apr 2021 03:43 PM PDT As the title implies, i'm wondering what everyone's favorite little spots or areas in Dark souls is. In between slogging through the Blightown swamp, fighting your way the first time through the undead burg and parish, or running through lava fields for the 13th time just to get hit by the bed of chaos' stupid dumb little tree fingers, we all need a little alone time in our happy places. I'm partial to the bridge in between Andres hardware shop and Sen's family fun center. The evergreen trees are really nice to look at and all the natural noises you hear like the wind and birds chirping and the little stream below just give off such a calming presence. That place is so nice it feels like a little window into how beautiful Lordran was in the peak of the age of fire. Those little moments on the bridge almost makes me forget the world is crumbling around it. It's tragic too be honest. Anyways skeletons, if you have a place like that in Lordran you hold dear to your heart Id love to hear it! What would you put on the tourist trap pamphlets ? [link] [comments] |
I uh... Beat Gwyn in less than 20 seconds? Posted: 15 Apr 2021 11:47 PM PDT I'm not over-leveled, I went in the fight and used 1 estus flask, swung a couple of times and he was dead. I didn't even get to listen to the entire pling pling plong. Is he supposed to be so... easy? I had more trouble fighting skeletons. Kind of underwhelming for my final boss in the souls borne series until I get a ps5 🤷♂️ [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Apr 2021 09:31 PM PDT So, I've been playing with a quality build with pyromancy and the reason I decided on that was because I wanted to experience an assortment of weapons but I've been resorting to dex weapons yet again smh. The Silver Knight spear and Estoc has been fun in the catacombs but I wanna try some strength weapons that aren't the Zweinhander and also some Dex weapons that aren't the BK Halberd. I've that heard the chaos infused great club is insane so that'll probably feed my need for a big bonk weapon but is there any other fun weapons I can use with raw reinforcement or other types of elemental weapons (applying buffs is kinda tedious for me)? Had a lot of fun with an ARC/STR build in Bloodborne due to the large variety of weapons I could use so I wanna replicate that in DS1 on this second playthrough. Thanks in advance. Last night I achieved my recent goal of getting every item Posted: 15 Apr 2021 04:33 PM PDT So a couple months ago DSR went on sale for ps4 and I grabbed it. I've gotten platinum on PC and done a variety of challenge runs (SL1, bow only, 1hp), but I realized there's probably still some things I haven't achieved. So after unwisely popping the soul of Ornstein for a couple levels, I decided to collect every item in the game. Of course, touching an item at one point during one cycle isn't good enough, so I set out to end with one save file holding every item. I soon remembered that this isn't possible, because the lord souls and a variety of keys can't be obtained until the lordvessel is placed. Still, that just changes the definition of what's possible, so my goal remained - hold one of every possible item except the Lordvessel. So after 74 hours I completed the run, with the last two items being the Very Large Ember and the 4 Kings Bequeathed Lord Soul Shard. My inventory contains every boss soul weapon, every boss soul, every key, every type of weapon, every spell, every armor set, every type of ammunition, every item including all of the fire keeper souls and the black eye orb. I still technically have to do my final check, but my spreadsheet shows that I have 688 unique items. My final build was 40 vit, 20 att, 40 end, 40 str, 40 dex, 40 int, 40 fth. I used mostly a +15 claymore / grass Crest shield, +5 Artorias Greatsword / +5 Greatshield of Artorias, +15 Black Bow of Pharis. I'm currently on NG+4 with only Gwyn left, which will be how this file stays, as fighting him means giving up 4 souls. Just posting to be proud of my accomplishment. If you think I might be missing an item call it out and I'll check. [link] [comments] |
Invading the Burg? That's a bonkin Posted: 15 Apr 2021 07:08 PM PDT I have been playing through the first part of DS1 with a friend and had just been complaining to him that no one had invaded me, yet he had been invaded earlier. Lo and behold, the same guy that had invaded HIM 30 minutes earlier spawned in right as we got to the boss fog. Everyone knows that the plunging attack is the most reliable move in the game. Posted: 16 Apr 2021 02:39 AM PDT Could someone help me by dropping the soul, i f up and killed him first [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 Apr 2021 02:26 AM PDT So I started a new playthrough and decided to get rite of kindling early on. I dropped down to Vamos' bonfire, rested at it and killed Pinwheel. But then I found out that I can't get out of catacombs because I can't warp yet. Also the bridge that Patches uses to trap you is in vertical position because I didn't need it. Any ideas on how to get back to Firelink? Thank you in advance and sorry for my English 😬 [link] [comments] |
What’s the most likely boss to get summoned for ? Posted: 16 Apr 2021 01:43 AM PDT I'm trying to get enough sunlight medals to fully rank up in the sun bros but every boss door I leave a summon sign at I just sit around for ages without being summoned. What's the most efficient summoning spot ? [link] [comments] |
I did a no armor run and it really wasn't that hard. Posted: 15 Apr 2021 02:03 PM PDT I'm surprised on how the difficulty didn't change that much from a normal playthrough. [link] [comments] |
