Dark Souls: Nightfall - First 18 Minutes (work in progress)

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 06:14 PM PST

Nightfall is an upcoming mod for Dark Souls 1. It implements sweeping story, combat, and design changes. A video of the first 18 minutes was just released by the team, and it's look absolutely incredible.

    Preview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfJ3grnyFrg

You can follow the devs who post routine updates:

With everything happening on-screen, I'd like to point out a few mechanics I noticed.

    1. Omni-directional rolling. They actually did it.
    2. Bloodborne's rally mechanic. Heal back damage with aggressive play.
    3. Risk vs reward. You can't heal in the aggressive mode, but have significantly enhanced speed and maneuverability. Swapping takes time, so you need to learn boss openings to safely heal.

And what really surprised me is how good the voice work is so far. I've never seen a fan project get so close to the original in terms of authenticity.

Everything about this demo has me excited for what's to come. Great work to all the devs and supporting cast.

    Kalameet is dead.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 09:35 PM PST

Hardest part of the SL1 playthrough for sure. I've been watching YMFAH's video as a guide, and using fire tempest on Kalameet is not nearly as easy as the video makes it seem lmao. Probably tried about 100 times over the past 4 hours. And then we killed each other at the same time haha. That was fun but super frustrating.

I just beat Manus on my first try.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 04:50 PM PST

This is my first playthrough of Dark Souls (Remastered on PC, using mouse and keyboard because I heard that apparently makes a difference) I started the DLC a few days ago after finishing everything in the main game (except Gwyn/ Kiln). I had heard that Manus was an incredibly difficult boss so I was kind of nervous for the DLC. I died to Artorias about 5 times before beating him, which was more than most of the late game bosses. (FYI, the bosses I probably struggled most with were Quelaag, O&S, and Seath). I decided to play for a little bit tonight but wasn't planning on making that much progress. I went through Oolicile township, and got to the bonfire at the beginning of chasm of the abyss. I figured I'd do some exploring and try to at least start the Manus boss fight, but had no intention of finishing it tonight. Well, I went in, and though it was a close fight, I beat him my first try. Kind of disappointed actually, I'm wondering if I'm over levelled for the fight because I saved the DLC for last.

For reference here are my stats and equipment

    Level: 91 Vitality: 35 Attunement: 11 Strength: 35 Endurance: 35 Dexterity: 24 Resistance: 12 Intelligence: 9 Faith: 11

I was one handing a +15 Zweihander and had a +5 Silver Knight shield. I was in full elite knight set, with all pieces levelled up between 7-9. I basically won the fight by backtracking, and whenever Manus swung his hand down, I'd block it and use my strong attack for some quick damage. I also had 18 estus and used all of them, but didn't have to start using any of my humanity to regain health.

DS1 saved me from Tarkov rage

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 03:29 PM PST

So I've never really played any souls like game (including DS) because the idea of a game being hard to the point of frustrating repetition sounded like hell. I once started BB and literally switched it off after 10 mins of gameplay.

Recently I've been sinking hours and hours into Tarkov after the wipe and to be honest having an awful time. I am not good at that game and to make it worse I find it stupidly addictive. So basically I've been hate playing it for a few weeks and coming off pretty grumpy (which is the opposite of what gaming should be).

So anyway, my BIL says "Hey man, I'm rinsing my way through the DS series, you want to borrow 1 and 2 so I've got someone to talk to about it?" I say yes thinking at the very least I can play it and realise how pleasent Tarkov is by comparison (like a medicine ball but for masochistic games). So I crack open the DS remaster, jump in, and lo and behold, the genius of DS is suddenly revealed to me. The atmosphere, the weird dialogue, the feeling of discovery and secrets... It's awesome. And even better is that the repetition of dying and getting a little further each time, isn't frustrating, it's actually pure zen. It's like a life lesson. You just keep moving forward. The combat itself also has satisfying chunkiness to hits and blocks that I've not experienced before.

Anyway, essay over. TL;DR - I now love Souls. Tarkov can suck it for a while. Praise the sun.

Soft locked out of upgrading pyro flame? Would you care to assist me please?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 05:29 PM PST

Hi souls friends. I am playing DS(Remastered) on PS5 (PS4 version) for the first time and messed up profoundly. I am current SL53 and going for a pyromancer build. My pyromancy flame is currently +5.

I defeated Quelaag and then spoke to her sister and joined the Chaos Servant covenant. I said "Yes" to Laurentius when he asked me to tell him about the new magic I discovered and he promptly disappeared.

Now I have come to understand there is another NPC to help me upgrade my pyromancy flame but she only spawns when your pyromancer flame is +10. As you can see I have somewhat soft locked myself out of the build I was going for in the first place.

Would anyone be willing to help me out and summon them so that Quelana will spawn and I can continue to enjoy this great game?

I just beat super ornstein on ng+

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 01:52 PM PST

The first time I played the game, I did super smough, and it kicked my ass multiple times. On ng+, I decided to fight super ornstein. Jesus was I scared, hearing how hard super ornstein was and me doing it in ng+ was suicide. After 4 tries I believe I finally beat him. Even though I think super ornstein is harder, I died way more times to super smough in just ng.

    Jolly Cooperation-ing The Depths

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 09:25 PM PST

Dang - took a couple of tries for me but a loin-clothed barbarian with a big sword (farming eyes of death?) jolly cooperationed with me until we cracked the Gaping Dragon - on PS3! Crazy to think that there are folks like me still playing on that platform. Thanks Taranayan3 (spelling?) whoever you are!

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 11:22 PM PST

After playing this game (or any soulsborne maybe), did it change anything in you/your life? Did you get some kind of "life lesson" from it or something like that?

    Estus Flask Noob Question.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 11:22 PM PST

Okay so I used 3 fire keeper souls but there isn't more estus when I sleep at the bonfire. Just the +3 above the estus flask. Im probably being stupid but why doesn't it refill to be full.

Good Way to Get Past the Ghosts in New Londo Ruins?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 02:28 PM PST

Tl;dr what's the best way to go about exploring the ruins and fighting the ghosts.

Hi there! This is my first time playing Dark Souls, playing the remastered on the ps4, and I just beat chaos witch quelaag. Made it to New Londo Ruins, took the shortcut back to firelink to use that bonfire (RIP fire lady, went to next closest) and decided to trek through the ruins.

Come across the ghosts in the ruin and do absolutely no damage to them. I don't see any helpful text things from other players telling me how to fight them, so I look it up. Found out the only ways to fight them is to be cursed, use a cursed weapon, or buy some item off the one merchant in the waterway/catacomb/sewer thing. I looked up curses weapons and it seems the only ones accessible to me right now are dropped by the ghosts so that's not an option it seems. I really would rather not trek back to the depths to get cursed since that's far away. And farming souls for a while sounds tedious.

Any tips on how to do this/best way to do this?

    Just got to Ash Lake

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 03:05 PM PST

Note: I'm following "Fighting Cowboys" walkthrough of DS: Remastered while I am playing DS: Prepare to Die

FC returns to fire link, there Onion Mans daughter is there and I spoke with her. She asked if I've seen her old man, and I think I answered yes.

Now I'm at Ash Lake, and I notice in FC walkthrough that Onion Man is at the bond fire, but on my save, he is not.

I know there's an optional quest with him helping him kill monsters in an area that has poison water. And I think I helped him and he seemed to go to sleep. But idk if I messed something up.

Can someone help on how to active Onion Man at the bond fire @ Ash Lake please 🥺

Should I play the first 2 souls games before the third? (obviously some explanation)

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 06:22 PM PST

I'm just looking to get the fulls souls experience. I've heard that DS3 is one of if not he hardest out of the series but I've also heard that it's the definitive experience and also has a shitload of content. I'm willing to buy the other two games and play through the whole trilogy but only if it's absolutely necessary so as to understand certain things, mechanics, or the story. But if I can just play DS3 and be fine and still get the full experience then I'd rather do that.

What to do after Quelaag's Domain.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 04:38 AM PST

I enjoyed her fight, died 4 times, but eventually I got the timing right to dodge her swipe attacks and KO'd her.

But where do I go next? Do I do the Hollows or Demons Lair? I tried going into the Hollows before but got cursed and got really stuck because I didn't know how to remove it. But since I backtracked and got 3 remove curse gems.

Is hollows hard should I do it later or what

Also whats the point to offering humanity to quelaag sister?

A New Kind of Dark Souls challenge? SL1, No Equip Load, All Bosses

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 04:38 AM PST

Does "I first try'd a boss" still count if you used a Black Knight weapon?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2021 04:33 AM PST

    Hey, semi-joking post here.

I know we shouldn't let the elitist mindset get to us (the whole "you're not good at the game if you take x many tries against a boss"), so I'm really half-joking with this question lmao. Nonetheless, beating a Souls boss on just the first or second try is still an achievement to be proud of, right?

See, I never beat any bosses on the first try until today, when I beat the Iron Golem in like 45 seconds and only got hit once. I pummeled his ass with the Black Knight Greatsword and it stunlocked him and let me finish him off with little trouble. I was wearing the full Wanderer set in order to get the fast roll while still being able to dish out that sweet, 2-handed damage from the BK Greatsword.

But I don't really feel like I achieved that via skill, for obvious reasons :D

Gwyn down.. First run of Dark Souls one complete (X360).

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 07:25 PM PST

This will be a short post. Goddamn, what a game.... The story is still sinking in for me: My last trip to firelink really made me realize how many people got lost along the way... they all left their bonfires and ending up losing their sanity and eventually their lives.

I'll have to revisit this game for sure... I can already see how many different ways there are to play this game.

All in all I'd say Dark Souls is close to a 10. Really close.

Cant wait to play the rest.

    BUT

I do have one question: does anyone have any lore-theories as to why you just start the game over as the same character once the credits are over? I figured "that" me would be the new Lord of Cinder... yet here I am, Hollow and in the asylum again. Its very very interesting.

    Everyone’s laughs are evil

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 05:38 AM PST

So, I've been replaying DSR again on my switch (it's the only platform I've got), and I've noticed something about the NPCS. No matter what, whenever I talk to them, the way they laugh just sounds evil, even if it is a good guy like solaire. They just sound like they are waiting to kill me. Does anybody else have this problem, or am I just being paranoid?

[Tip] I discovered a way to get Infinite Souls?!

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 10:54 AM PST

Not sure if this is a glitch but it looks more like an in-game feature.

    Requirements:

1.) You must have Frampt already awaken & still at firelink shrine 2.) You must have a Darkmoon Blade Covenant Ring

Simply feed frank the ring for 1000 souls, quit game and reload, check the chest behind Frampt (next to the statue) which used to be open, and notice it's now closed.

Open the chest and, weirdly, you should get the ring back!

Repeat everything as much as you want and you'd get 1000 souls each time.

Not sure why Frank gives this back to you, maybe he wants to keep you hunting the sinners lol

    I Appreciate the PVP Now

    Posted: 21 Feb 2021 10:24 PM PST

A little while ago I posted asking why people invade, because I honestly didn't know what the draw was. Now I know. I quit weed over a month ago and I swear this pvp got me high again. It took some time, it took running into some asshats, but I finally found good, clean fun from the PVP in this game.

I built a SL 66 Dex/pyro and dang it's a good time. I mostly use Uchi, Flamberge, or a spear, with great fireball and great combustion attuned. Mother's Mask, and a havel ring and non-havel ring armor set up. I get way more poise if I use wolf ring, but better resistances with havel. Relevant stats are 20 Vit, 12 Att, 25 End, 16 str, and of course 45 dex. I want to try more builds and expand to more level ranges, anyone feel like recommending some?

What is some PVP ettiquite I may not know yet? I try to bow before and after, if given space to do so. Are the talking carvings GM or BM?
