Why DS2 SotFS Is Still My Favorite of the Franchise

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 08:08 AM PST

I'm probably preaching to the choir by posting this in this subreddit, but I get the feeling that if this were posted in the other Fromsoft reddits it would get down voted to oblivion.

For context, I've played through DS1, DS2, DS3, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Demon Souls. Keeping things concise, here are some things about DS2 that puts it at the top of that list in my mind:

    • Weapon variety: The amount of weapons in this game, especially the unique ones, plus the ability to power stance makes choosing a build and play style incredibly flexible and allows players to really get creative.

    • Spell variety: Same points as above, except for spells. Also, all spell schools are viable (looking at you DS3).

    • World size: The game world is truly expansive compared to the other games. I can quickly run through the paths needed to be taken in DS1 and DS3 in my head but with DS2 there is a real sense of exploration and adventure whenever you venture away from Majula. Another thing to point out here is that much of your adventuring happens outdoors rather than in cramped castles. Speaking of Majula...

    • A true home hub: Out of all of the games, Majula is the only hub that really feels like a welcoming, relaxing place to come back and rest.

    • Environment variety: In DS2 you have a huge variety of environments. You have the spooky Shaded Woods, ocean-based environments like Heide's Tower of Flame and Lost Bastille, an entire area inside of a volcano, an underground dwarven city, the beautiful underground lake that is the Shrine of Amana, stormy castle Drangleic, and not to mention the far off cities of Shulva, Brume, and Eluem Loyce. All of these locations are colorful and contrast each other well. Compare this to DS3 where everything is washed out and different shades of red, brown, and gray.

    • Quirkiness: DS2 has a lot of fun quirks, like the friendly torch hollows that follow you around, puzzles with Pharros lockstones, breakable "locked" doors, ghosts hidden in the walls of castle Drangleic, and many more small things that bring a fun, unique life to the game.

    • Replayability: Not only do we get bonfire ascetics that let you try and beat bosses at higher difficulties, but on followup playthroughs you have new enemies to fight, different NPC invasions, etc. as well as better gear to pick up. This all makes for multiple playthroughs being fun and enjoyable.

I'm sure there is more I missed, but these are a few things that immediately came to mind after I came back to this game after so many years away from it.

Good God this is a beast of a game.

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:00 AM PST

I feel like I've been playing this game forever. There's so much content. And I'm only playing through the main campaign + DLC. I think I could have beaten DS1 and 3 3 times in the amount of time I've been playing. I'm not even doing any PvP or convenant stuff.

I really like this game, so it isn't a problem, but still, I have so many other games on the back burner...

There's one thing that annoys me more than anything else when I watch other people play this game...

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 01:17 AM PST

...it's called a bonfire ascetic, not a bonfire aesthetic or whatever other word you want to replace 'ascetic' with.

    Canon explanation for enemies despawing

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 12:37 PM PST

I'm trying to figure this out, is there someone in the game who explains it to you? Do they get tired of figthing you and quit like the witch says you will?

I've always seen the being hollowed/respawing as a metaphore for trapping ourselves into our minds, repeating the same thing over and over again until we become shadows of ourselves. So do you liberate the hollows by giving them eternal death lol?

I have to post this here and not the main sub- because this is an unpopular opinion there.

So, as some of you may know, I beat Dark Souls 2 before any of the others- and although some people told me it was a dumb idea, I'm so damn glad I did.

So, I had a LOT of fun with DS2. Like, more than any other game. Ever.

But then I played Dark Souls 1. And for the first half of it, I admit, I hated it. Like, I legitimately had no fun. I would beat a boss, be kind of proud, and then go back to suffering. Finally, around 30 unenjoyable hours later, I got to Anor Londo. Eventually I got to Ornstein and Smough, and I tried over and over and over to kill them, it was a massive pain in the ass. So, I quit. For almost 2 whole months.

Then one day, and, I have no clue why, I was bored as hell and saw the case laying on my desk. I thought what the hell and popped it in.

I spawned in and the first thing I saw was a YOU DIED screen and a Super Smough hovering over me. Apparently, I had rage quit.

I ran back to the arena, and killed them with way too much ease. Something I've learned over the past year of playing Dark Souls is that everytime I take a month long (or longer) break, I come back genuinely incredible at the games. So, I got the Lordvessel, placed it on the alter, played for a while, made some decent progress and then saved and quit.

Another month or so later, I pick it back up, and just went ham. I mean really, I was good. I beat all four of those special bosses, the Four Kings, Seath the Scaleless, Gravelord Nito and the Bed of Chaos over the course of one day of nonstop playing.

A few days later, I finished the game. The last 30 hours were incredible, I loved them, but the first 30 hours, they made me dread ever playing video games again. (That's a super huge oversimplification of my experience tho)

I did not like the first game as much as the second.

Granted, I was much more satisfied with the ending of DS1. I liked the choice.

But I can't quite put my finger on it, but for some reason i just didn't enjoy it as much.

Idk what the point of this is other than, I'm so glad I started with DS2. I wouldn't have appreciated these games if I started with the first one, I would have given up and probably never kept playing. But I was lucky- I chose, by complete accident, Dark Souls 2 and now I get to enjoy one of the most impactful video game series ever. Dare I say, DS2 eased me into the series.

For the first time ever, I'm going to say a common phrase among this community without being sarcastic.

    Thank you, Dark Souls.

    Velstadt, the Royal Aegis

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 11:29 AM PST

I'm sure most people had an easier time with this boss, but I feel like also the design is much appreciated. I like the e simplicity, yet there's so much character. The hammer upon impact on the ground got me many times misjudging the extra second you can still be hit.

    Lack of Lucatiel Love

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 06:38 PM PST

I love all Dark Souls game 1,2,3 equally No « but », real honest

So it saddens me, although I love Solaire, to see on the DS subs and Elden Ring sub (oooohhhhg elden ring) much more love and references to Solaire than Lucatiel

I mean Lucatiel is kinda the Solaire of DS2

I think they should be treated equally.

    Nuff said

Whats the deal with Fume Knight?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:12 AM PST

Yeah, title says it, whats the deal with him? I always hear people saying he is the hardest boss in the game. For refernce, I am the last one that says "git gud" or something (The ds1 boss I died the most to was Moonlight Butterfly), and I know that everyone has a differnce experience in the souls games regarding difficulty (as I said, Moonlight Butterfly...). But I somehow dont get why people say Fume Knight is the hardest boss.

He is a difficult boss, dont get me wrong, but I wouldnt even consider him the hardest of the DLC, I needed 4 tries for Fume Knight but atleast 7 for Sir Alonne, Sir Alonne was lightning fast, meanwhile Fume Knights only really hard to dodge move is the first phase one where he adds a swing with the greatsword after the two or three normal slashes... What is it that makes the boss so hard for you?

Do you all fight him with Velstadts armor from the beginning??

    My Dragon Aerie misadventures

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:27 AM PST

So I was doing alright, I think I didn't died in the last 2 or 3 hours. I got to the Dragon Aerie, crossed a bridge and got to a sleeping wyvern, everything's cool, I'm not getting too close to it and I'm not going to mess with its eggs. But hey, there are items around it so lets carefully pick them and keep going.

Then I noticed that one of those annoying motherfuckers that explode and break your gear is coming to me. Okay, I'll get away from the wyvern and deal with that. Then I notice more of those assholes are running to me.

'Whatever they are not a problem'. I have three of those now so I decided to run up to a small ledge to deal easily with them. Two more appear out of nowhere and now I have five of those behind me, I decide to drop down the ledge and fight them in a open area but when I'm about to do this one of them explode in my face 'okay, whatever, they don't deal damage and none of my items broke, also that saves me from having to drop down lol'

But at the middle point between the ledge and the ground below my character gets stuck in a really weird position, in a horizontal position, facing directly to the sky. First I laughed but then I started panicking because my character did not move at all. I wish I've recorded it and I thought about it but I panicked lol.

Then my character died. Just died.

Problem solved I guess, thank you Dark Souls.

    Co-op culture and mechanics

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 09:22 AM PST

Dark souls 2 was the first I played on PC many years back. Having played the 3rd countless times and recently finishing the 1st i have cycled back to the 2nd which brings me to my discussion today

What the hell is up with multiplayer? While i do consider dark souls 2 to be the weakest link of the franchise (very video gamey + what is up with that heides tower of flame cut out you can see from majula? It looks atrocious. Seeing it again yesterday after playing 1+3 makes me wonder how this was ever approved) It seems to have the most active coop out of all 3. Is the multiplayer engine more friendly with connections? Is there perhaps something about 2 that incites you to put your sign down more? I love coop!

With more signs comes more failed summons however. 1/3 of summon signs fail, 1 other third people immedietly black crystal out. I didnt have time to check but is there no password matching in ds2? Why is everyone black crystalling out?

And last..... Wtf is up with the names? Flame2586 or idk puck6633. Is anyone actually naming there characters this? Emote interaction seems to be really low in dark souls 2 so with player names like this i almost get the impression these are bots...

    Just some thoughts and questions

    Fuck that bitch of Mytha

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 12:31 PM PST

I spent HOURS trying to beat her with acid, with her healing and I taking damage and I was also slowed down ... Now ... FromSoftwer ...

What human being would think of going to set fire to a random fan peeking out of the wall where there is death underneath if not to one who knows it would take away the poison, or one who has seen a tutorial on Youtube?

I promised myself that I wouldn't see tutorials for my first Run, just like I did for the first one, but here I am, watching a tutorial on how to get rid of acid in a bossfight in the worst possible way!

Only a psychopath would do it without knowing it or one who had a torch on and was passing by by chance, which I don't do.

In conclusion, Fuck that great bitch of Mytha, thanks FromSoftwere for ... this bullshit and thanks to anyone who has read this message, even too long

    Sir alonne

    Posted: 12 Feb 2021 11:54 PM PST

Everyone always complains about fume knight being the hardest boss but for me it's alonne. When I fought fume knight I died around 15 times then I used a gold pine resin and like magic it became super easy and I killed him first try but when I went to fight alonne it's like your first souls game all over again. I've died so far around 50 times just his speed and damage overwhelm me every time along with his running attack that for some reason I can't dodge successfully. I want to know what you guys think about alonne and fume knight and the difficulty between them.

Edit: just beat him after writing this

Would a BluePoint-remake "save" the game?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2021 10:24 AM PST

Dark Souls 2 is a really good game. It has (imo) the two best bosses in souls-history, the story itself is good, the lore is amazing (I just love the idea of the 4 daughters and their tries to destroy/reign their kingdoms), artifical difficulty isnt good, but doesnt really make the game worse.

The only real problem I have, like a lot of other people, are the technical issues. ADP and HitBoxes, mostly.

Now lets look at BluePoints Demon's Souls remake: Afaik (don't have a ps5; source is youtube) they didn't really change anything game related. No new or cut bosses, no new or cut gameplay elements... The only thing they changed are graphics and QOL changes, like omnidirectional rolling.

Now imagine what they could make out of Dark Souls 2. Lets make a list of what DS2 would become after a BluePoint remake:

    -Amazing graphics and sound design

    -Good story

    -Good lore

-Good gameplay, with amazing weapon ideas like powerstancing or dual wield

-no technical issues like Hitboxes anymore

-41 bosses, including some of the best (and worst) of soulsborne history

-Interesting new mechanics like the torch

The only thing that would probably still be there would be ADP, but I think they would be able to remove the feature that ties iframes to adp, and then it would be fine.

If this would happen, DS2 could easily become my favorite of the soulsbornes. And I think there wouldnt be as much negativity towards this game as there is now.

What are your thoughts about this? Would a remake be a good idea? Would should be changed? What should stay as it is?
