Dark Soul 2's Lore is integral to the series, why does the community keep wrongfully asserting it doesn't matter?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 11:33 PM PST

There are still people out here saying Linking the Fire is the canonical end to DS2. There is a whole lot wrong about that, considering there's an entire game dedicated to explaining why either ending can be canonical.

Obviously, 3 has a lot more to do with 1 aesthetically. It has Anor Londo in it, after all. It makes direct references to the first game... just like 2 did. 2 is all about the idea of Cycles, that the Age of Fire and Age of Dark are continuously stuck in the same cycle, with history endlessly repeating itself. This has been misinterpreted as the Age of Fire being endless, but that was never, ever the case. Straid outright explains it.

Many kingdoms rose and fell on this tract of earth; mine was by no means the first.
Anything that has a beginning also has an end. No flame, however brilliant, does not one day splutter and fade.
But then, from the ashes, the flame reignites, and a new kingdom is born, sporting a new face.
It is all a curse! Heh heh heh!

As we can now infer, the Age of Dark isn't a true end. It merely is a pitstop, a band-aid on the eternal curse Gwyn has created. But for those who are still on the fence, Dark Souls 3 confirms this:

    The First Flame quickly fades.
    Darkness will shortly settle.
But one day, tiny flames will dance across the darkness.
Like embers, linked by lords past."

This a quote from the Age of Dark ending.

Dark Souls 2 is all about the endless cycle of this world. It's setting up everything 3 does, it's many facsimiles to 1, like 3, are there for a specific reason. Then we have Aldia, who basically spills the beans on every bit of 3 before we even knew what a Ringed City was.

Once, the Lord of Light banished Dark, and all that stemmed from humanity.
And men assumed a fleeting form.
These are the roots of our world.
Men are props on the stage of life, and no matter how tender, how exquisite...
A lie will remain a lie.
Young Hollow, knowing this, do you still desire peace?

This is quite clearly describing how Gwyn branded the Darksign on Humanity, something we only learned enough about to understand in The Ringed City DLC.

Another popular misconception is that "Dark Souls 3 ignores Dark Souls 2"

    This is plainly, obviously wrong.

    • The Way of Blue and Blue Sentinels still exist, prominently.
    • The Faraam Set is used by Lion Knight Albert
    • The Thrones of Lords of Cinder in Firelink Shrine heavily resemble The Throne of Want
    • The Shield of Want is the King's Shield, and even references Vendrick
    • Laddersmith Gilligan appears in Profaned Capitol
    • The Earthern Peak appears in The Dreg Heap
    • The entire freakin' plot of the game hinges on Dark Souls 2's idea of the cyclical nature of Light and Dark

Finally, the last one is the most understandable: "Dark Souls 2 has nothing to do with Linking the Flame". This is plainly wrong. Forgivably, it was less clear in the original version of the game, but the DLC, and furthermore Scholar of the First Sin, cleared this up beyond need for discussion:

The Emerald Herald tells you, right before you assume the Throne (or find a way past Light and Dark with Aldia):

Fate would not be bested, and men were cursed once again.
If you proceed, Nashandra will come after you.
Knowing that you will take the throne, and link the fire.
She covets the First Flame, and the Great Soul. Put Nashandra to rest.

    Vendrick says this:

As flame rises, so does it fade.
Such is the way of things.
Do you intend to link the fire?
Then you must first take the throne.

There is a mountain of dialogue from him, and item descriptions about him, that outright confirm the Throne of Want is this Age's way of Linking the Fire.

Finally, there is an oft-forgotten neat bit with the Pilgrims of the Dark and the Darklurker, and their relation to Londor. No quotes here, just speculation, but considering the Pilgrims in Dark Souls 3 are connected to Angels (which the Darklurker resembles) which are connected to Dark, it's not a stretch to assume this is also a connection.

This has been my personal way of venting, I hope you enjoyed my informative rant.

    Build Showcase: Meet the Spy

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 09:15 AM PST

    Meet the Spy

Disguises, invisibility and daggers in the back are all standard-issue for an assassin in a fantasy setting. Unsurprisingly then, the Spy can be translated pretty well into a Souls game, losing only his revolver and sapper in the process.

The Spy build depends on both Dexterity and Intelligence to varying degrees depending on the direction you want to take it. I generally don't recommend daggers for a main weapon for PVP so this is probably the type of build you respec into for PVP. It's unlikely that any experienced players are going to fall for an invader with the White Ring or a Chameleon ambush, but newer players might and you can always practice your trickstabs if they don't.

    Weapons:

    • Knife - Dagger
    • Your Eternal Reward - Umbral Dagger
    • Big Earner - Thief Dagger
    • Spy-cicle - Retainer's Short Sword

    Abilities:

    • Boxtrot taunt - Chameleon or Silver Talismans
    • Dead Ringer - Simpleton's Ring (sort of)
    • Disguise Kit - White Ring or Ring of the Living

    Armor:

    • Paper Mask - Manikin Mask
    • Dashin' Hashshashin - Black Hood
    • Frenchman's Beret - Travelling Merchant Hat
    • Dead Head - Dark Mask
    • Lady Killer - Robe of Judgement
    • Lurker's Leathers - Black Leather Armor (sort of)
    • Puffy Provocateur - Llewlyn Armor (I'm reaching for this one)

    Example Builds:

    Meet the Team

    • Demoman
    • Sniper
    • Medic
    • Spy (you are here)
    • Soldier (coming soon)
    • Scout (coming soon)
    • Heavy (coming soon)
    • Pyro (coming soon)
    • Engineer (coming never)

After quitting DS2 a few weeks ago and almost refunding it, I went back to it.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:34 AM PST

Just finished the main game last night, it is honestly really good. Power stance is such a cool mechanic. I don't really see where the hate comes from for ds2. I ragequit originally in No Man's Wharf because I got mad at the enemy placement, which I still believe is pretty annoying for that area, Iron Keep, and Shrine of Amana. Other than those 3 areas I felt like the areas were really well designed and fun. I also love the boss fights because I like fighting the 'Dudes in armor' style bossfights more than anything else. I heard the DLC is good so I am going to play it today, I hope I enjoy it.

The Fate of the Bearer of the Curse

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 01:36 PM PST

Hey, so I was doing some thinking about the Bearer of the Curse. I've seen the question "what happened to him/her" many times on this sub and other places. The general consensus is that (if you walk away) you wander the lands with Aldia eternally immortal thanks to the crowns as you watch the cycles endlessly repeat themselves.

It's a pretty cool idea and thought as I can just imagine BotC chilling with Aldia, watching as the flame gets so burnt that old kingdoms such as Drangleic/Drang and Lordran travel through time and converge with Lothric.

However, I don't think the BotC actually made it as far as we think. The blessing of the crowns prevent hollowing, right? So as long as the undead curse exists, the crowns effectively make him immortal. But what happens when someone else decides to link the flame and become a Lord of Cinder? All of a sudden, the anti-hollowing crowns lose their worth. They don't imitate the curse or make you immortal. So, it seems more likely that the BotC would wait until someone else links the fire and dies of natural causes right?

This would also be useful for another theory I've seen a couple times of Wolnir's Crown being made up in part by the crowns of our BotC. However, this wouldn't be possible if he were Undead as he couldn't be killed. So what if he weren't? Once again, someone links the fire, kingdoms rise, the BotC becomes mortal and Wolnir and his army claim his crowns among many others.

I know it's less fun than the thought of the BotC surviving till the painting of Ash is created and then chilling with the Ashen One. But at the end of the day, I think he did in fact find a cure for his hollowing in that he waited until some other nobody decides to link the fire and stave off the Undead Curse.

tl;dr The BotC probably died of natural causes since the crowns don't grant immortality, just prevents hollowing. When the flame is inevitably linked again, he dies a mortal as he originally set out to do.

Would You say that lordran/drangleic/lothric is afterlife or maybe even hell?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:53 AM PST

You can see in dark souls 2 in the intro as the player character is throwing himself into the portal. It could be the whole other reality/dimension presented just as is or afterlife/hell to the proper world from which the character makes the jump.

In all 3 games, the lands are converging, moving, phasing in and out. There is proof of that in each of the games.

Subtly in Dark Souls1 with summons and dlc. Then hollowing theme, impossible geographic locations (iron keep) and dream like state of the world in Dark souls 2. And DS3 just goes all out in Ringed City.

You cannot properly die there, everyone and everything, even the land changes and goes "hollow" with time. People speak about lands which do not exist (or are at least not presented to us) as if they remembered their previous life.

Anyhow - I find it really intriguing. There is also Demons Souls. People say that the trilogy takes place in the broken archstone, land of giants and we see giants in Anor Londo and especially in Dark Souls 2 and 3 (yhorm) but there is no hollowing theme in Demons Souls and there is no fog theme in the trilogy.

And as for hell? It certainly fits as the world is literally the most horrific description You could imagine of hell. People forgetting (blacksmith), going hollow, changing into monsters, dying over and over again. The hell could just as well be it's own world, working with it's own laws .

Maybe developers failed a bit to properly show this but I don't think elevator to Iron Keep is bad level design or an oversight. Maybe there is a chunk missing but my guess it was always made to be up there.

Just recently started the game and am pleasantly surprised!

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:03 AM PST

I wouldn't call myself the most avid souls fan, or the best souls player. I've beaten DS3, played halfway through DS1, and just a week ago beat Sekiro, so I decided to check out DS2. I don't have a PS4 so Bloodborne isn't an option, and I wanted to check out the game that seemed to be the most divisive in the community. People seem to think it's either the worst souls game by a long shot or their absolute favorite, so I just had to see what the fuss was about (Scholar of the First Sin edition, of course). Lo and behold, 25 gameplay hours later, I'm really enjoying DS2! It definitely seems to be the most approachable of the games, with relatively easy bosses and bonfire teleporting right off the bat (the thing that actually kept me from beating DS1 was the amount of backtracking you have to do before unlocking the lord vessel). Not only that, but the online community, while definitely not the most active, seems pretty good as far as communities go, although there has been a distinct lack of invaders in my playthrough so far. I'm really glad I gave the game a try, because despite (or possibly because of) its differences I'm really enjoying the experience.

All that aside though, a real question: does having the human effigy effect prevent me from being summoned or just prevent me from summoning others?

The Afflicted Bosses in Sunken Crown aren’t attacking

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 02:34 PM PST

Except for the Archer. I Lured the double sword guy into a pit and he's not moving out of that spot. The Havel cosplayer now just circles me and doesn't attack. Only way I damage him is by using the block break. What is this? I wanted to beat these guys fair and square but they've now made it super easy. This isn't my first attempt but it is my first run through of the game

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 05:05 AM PST

Just a goofy match i had in the arena that was extremely fun!

Lots of fainting, baits, fakes, stanceswapping and general moves that are normally far too risky when faced with fast meta weapons. Enjoy!

I just got DS2 SOTFS on Steam, but I can't seem to get it work in fullscreen. Even when I apply the fullscreen settings in-game, it remains in windowed mode. It's really annoying.

I've looked up solutions and tried some of them, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

    Straight sword question.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 08:46 AM PST

I have a "quality" build, with strength being a little bit higher than DEX. I would like to use a straight sword, but on the internet everyone has a different opinion. Anyway, those that I see the most are

    -Longsword

    -Drakekeeper's

    -Varangian

Obviously before upgrading I'm going to try the moveset, I'm just curious in what you guys think is the best, AND what has the highest AR and DPS.

    Thanks!
