    I am a moron

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:19 AM PST

Been playing the trilogy again just recently and I started another play through with a strength build on DSR, got to Anor londo and ran out of poison arrows to deal with the archers. Had to return to the female undead merchant and I've only just found the cage that takes you from the top of sens to the bottom. How the fuck have I missed this all this time. What a ball sack.

Four Kings on NG+2 is horrifying.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 05:25 PM PST

Level 125, vit and end gouge. NG+ made me realize maaaaaaybe chaos and lightning weapons weren't cutting it anymore, but I parried my way through Gwyn and felt alright.

I realized way too late into NG+ that I forgot to ignore frampt, so here I was in +2 rushing for the darkwraith set...A second time. I make it to four kings, and everything's going fine. I have full havel and a lightning washing pole, what could go wrong?

Three grabs in a row to start the fight. Needless to say I got absolutely dogpiled. Sure, maybe it was just a bad run. Try 2.

After five runs of this washing pole doing sub 150 damage a hit, I realized something horrible. Four kings is a goddamn lie. With basically 20 percent of the health bar left, I saw a third king in the corner of my eye and my soul left my body. The three kings decide to shoot their homing projectile at the same, exact time. A couple of rolls later, I get catapulted by one, two, three blasts in a row.

Three hours later, I won the fight by stripping down and clubbing them down. It really took a full hollowing to beat this fight. For you fellow vit gouge builds, stay in new game where you're safe, I have so many regrets.

Thoughts on Anor Londo after Blighttown and Sen's

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 03:52 AM PST

I posted the other day about how I was glad to be done with the platforming in Blighttown and Sen's Fortress. Whoever sat there thinking "wait until you find the spear archers in Anor Londo", welp, I just found them 🙃

That emoji is me, upside down and plummeting to my death as I attempt (and fail) to get to the one on the right. Good times.

Dark Souls 3 is a different beast.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:02 PM PST

In the process of playing the first Dark Souls I acquired 3 and figured I'd check it out. While I'm past the 2 bells on 1, I can't even beat the second boss on 3. The games a crazy beast!

I just beat Dark Souls Remastered never having more than 1 HP

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 03:58 AM PST

    Some Facts:

    1. It took me about 12:40 hours to complete the run from start to finish.
    2. I died 272 times.
      1. about 30 deaths before and at Capra Demon.
      2. 89 deaths at OnS.
      3. around 15 deaths for Sif.
      4. 31 deaths at Four Kings.
      5. 11 deaths for Gwyn.
    3. Equipment:
      1. Thief Starting Class
      2. Zweihander +15
      3. Spider Shield, later Silver Knight Shield +5
      4. Parrying Dagger
      5. No Armor, as it is useless anyways. (except for poison resistance in Blighttown)
    4. My first boss after Asylum Demon was Stray Demon.
    5. The firebomb throwing hollow before the aqueduct after Firelink Shrine needs to be nerfed.
    6. Rusted Iron Ring is a necessity for Blighttown.
    7. Sif is a nuisance. Her stepping on me almost cost me my sanity.
    8. I didn't use any NPC summons.
    9. No health increasing equipment.

    Some quirks of the run:

    1. Everything that touches you spells instant death. That includes enemies falling on you (-> 3 dmg), blocking split damage attacks, a single poison tick.
    2. Every projectile needs to be avoided.
    3. No Healing. As in, what are you gonna heal if you are dead anyway?
    4. No walking across lava at all.
    5. Getting cursed means basically nothing.
    6. No fall damage. Fall damage in Dark Souls is percentage based and rounded down. Meaning even if you were to take 99% fall damage you still don't die. (It deals 0.99 dmg rounded down -> 0 dmg)

I used Cheat Engine (CE) and an associated Table (unfortunately I can't remember who made it so I can't give credit, I downloaded it from somewhere in 2019) to permanently set my maximum HP to 1.
This obviously means that I played offline.
(note that I DO NOT encourage use of CE or similar tools to disrupt other players game experiences! I used it solely to make my own playthrough more difficult.)

I encourage everyone who hates themselves or is looking for a very challenging run to try this. It is very easy to set up and was quite the experience. Go give it a try.

I didn't record a whole lot, but if anyone is interested in some silly moments that occurred in the run, I could provide them in a separate post.
Hit me up if you need help setting up CE.

    Don't give up skeleton!

A few question for a Dark Souls Remastered noob.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 11:06 PM PST

Played DS3 and DS2 and BB, but I still am confused about a few things:

    1. Reinforcing armor, is it worth it or not? My playstyle is fast rolling with fast weapons like straight swords, rapiers and curved swords, mainly a dex/faith build or a quality build, but either with maxed out stamina. As such, most games I just get to 20 in health stat and wear light armor. Is that still a feasible strategy in this game or should I start increasing my defenses/health.

    2. Whats the best strategy to find out where to go next? I spent 2 hours in the valley of the Drakes after killing the hydra just starting out the game, took me a while to realize I wasnt supposed to be having this hard of a a time and then I fought through undead burg like a breeze. Finally realized from reading item descriptions I was supposed to find "the depths". Just wished I didn't waste so much time. so im wondering if you had any tips or is it really just trying to find the path to the Bell Below and the Bell above?

    3. So no bonfire warping, I get that, but important npc's like the blacksmith and fire keeper not in the hub world? I noticed the shopkeepers and blacksmith sell items that let you do hub world type stuff at bonfires. Is it always like this? Will I always be able to use the items i bought at all bonfires throughout the game and also does every merchant have an indispensible bonfire ability I need to buy?

Sorry for my wordiness, thanks in advance.

First time Souls Player and I just defeated Artorias without summoning!!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:23 PM PST

Literally shaking! That boss is THE boss. I'm a lvl 83 knight build with high vit/end/str/dex and used to wearing my silver knight armor with sword and getting by with medium roll and shield, but damn, had to strip down to basic armor and equipped my +10 halberd so I could dodge and get quick jabs in. Took me all day and the only time I got him below half was the time I was able to beat him, the most I've been worried about dying in a bit.

My story of finally beating Dark Souls after 7 years and 3 consoles. This is why you never give up on these games!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 06:06 PM PST

I just beat Dark Souls for the first time, and I'm feeling sentimental, so I'm going to ramble a bit in the hopes that my experience with the game (and the series, really) resonates with you all.

About 7 years ago, Dark Souls went on sale for $4.99 on the Xbox store, and I bought it on a whim for my 360. I had heard much about the difficulty of the game, but I wasn't prepared for just how different the game was from anything else at the time. The Asylum Demon continually handed my ass to me, but somehow I made it through. I think I must have made at least 50 runs from that first Undead Burg bonfire to the Taurus Demon, just getting obliterated every single time. I might have eventually beaten the Taurus Demon, but I gave up soon after. I figured these games just were not for me.

Over the years I continued to try out every From Software game, usually grabbing them on sale. I bought a PS4 in 2015 and got around 1/3 through Bloodborne before getting stuck and giving up. I tried Dark Souls 2 and 3 and only got a few areas in before getting discouraged and giving up. I got Dark Souls Remastered and made it all the way to the Capra Demon before giving up. Everyone adored these games so much and I just couldn't wrap my mind around them. I was making a bit of progress in each game and played them for a few hours, but I always met a roadblock and always just gave up. I figured these games weren't for me. That was my relationship with the Souls series until recently.

Flash forward to 2020. I was lucky enough to get a PS5 preorder on Amazon. Spider-Man was fun, but over pretty quick, so I decided I was going to borrow my friend's copy of Demons Souls Remake. Even if I bounced off the game as I expected to, it's one of the few games on PS5 that is taking advantage of the hardware, so at least it would all look very nice. I had sort of an epiphany early on: my runs of all of these games had me focusing on big strength weapons and big armor when the playstyle that actually suited me the most was fast-rolling around with a Dex weapon! I had found my playstyle, and I blasted through the Demons Souls Remake. It's like something clicked into place and I finally understood these games. I beat many of the bosses on my first try. With Demons Souls under my belt, I knew what I had to do next.

Playing through all of the Demons Souls remake gave me a better idea of what to expect from the bosses, enemies and areas of the Souls series. Finally finding my playstyle after trying over and over again to brute force these games with greatswords and fatrolls gave me a new confidence to finally try the game everyone swears up and down to be a masterpiece. I knew I had found my stride as a player when I beat the Taurus Demon that had once given me such trouble in one try. The bell gargoyles wasn't so hard after facing off against the Maneaters in DeS. The depths and blighttown were nightmares, but I got through them. Dealing with an invader in my first try at Sen's Fortress was less than ideal. Finally seeing this Anor Londo that had been hyped up for years was worth the wait, as was O&S. The big connected world of Dark Souls is both engaging and a bit terrifying when you don't know what enemies and areas await you. After mopping up the optional areas and making more than a few stress-filled runs through Lost Izalith and the Tomb of the Giants, I finally reached the last area of the game. Landing that final hit on the final boss after first trying to conquer this game 7 whole years ago was a feeling I won't soon forget.

The moral of the story is this: don't give up on these games! You might have just not found the playstyle for you yet. Keep experimenting, keep dying, and eventually you will see why everyone loves these games so much.

I just beat Ornstein and Smough

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:29 PM PST

I beat Ornstein and Smough on my 5th try solo cause I had no humanity left. It was so stressful trying to survive these two at once. First time playing through Dark Souls after beating Demon's Souls on PS5. I'm loving the franchise!

How did the players first discover some of the super hidden areas of this game?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:38 AM PST

I'm doing my first somewhat-blind playthrough of DS:R, and it's mind boggling to me how anyone ever found the way to get back to the asylum, and then got the doll, then figured out how to go into the painted world of Ariamis. Or how anyone ever found that hidden wall at the bottom of Blighttown to go down into the Great Hollow. Or found the hidden wall after Quelaag where her sister is.

Is there like an "oral history of the early days of Dark Souls," that goes through how players originally found all this stuff out? It's kind of mind blowing to me.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:45 PM PST

What should I level up? This is my second run, my main weapon is the claymore I got it to +12. Just wondering what I should level before the fight because on my previous game I got my ass handed to me and just decided to start over. https://imgur.com/MGKKMKF.jpg

Should I stick with my black knight sword?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 02:10 AM PST

I managed to get the sword relatively early on and I've upgraded it to +4. I have lv 42 strength and 21 dexterity. I hear that the claymore and the zweihander are better swords but I also read that they need to be upgrading to +10 to actually be good. I'm not looking to play pvp, I just want to cut the bosses.

Got past the archers on my first attempt…

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 10:18 AM PST

…then missed the bonfire and got killed by the mimic.

Anor Londo is beautiful, though, and I eventually made it through to the giant blacksmith and unlocked the shortcut.

Dumb stuff you've done on your first run?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 04:23 PM PST

    Here are mine:
    - Stopped playing for a while then came back to Firelink shrine and thought the bird was an enemy wasted 100 arrows on him.
    - Didn't know what humanity did and never kindle any bonfire past 5 estus.
    - Used a barely upgraded weak sword up to like Sen Fortress, bosses like Quelaag took me ages.
    - All the way from the bottom of Blightown to Firelink shrine like 3 times because couldn't find Quelaag.
    - Didn't wanna waste any items so never consumed souls to level up.
    - Died dozens of times vs skeletons trying to get to catacombs too early. (this ones pretty common doe)
    - Waste time killing the big dude that throws the boulders in Sen Fortress.
    - Went to the painted world accidentally, get stuck there.
    - Ran past the dragon on the bridge and somehow it dispawned never to be seen again.
    - Jumped into the firelisk shrine well and died lol
    - Never do any covenant cuz I thought last covenant would get mad at me.
    - Never realize you could become human or summon players or NPCs.
    - All the game I wanted a "heavy" type of build, I only achieved it near the end, for most of the game I had heavy armor doing little help to me.
    - Died so many times to Endless discharge, I didn't know there was a cheese.
    - Died to Pinwheel.
    - Died to Quelagg and to Smough when they had 1 hit left, after being some of the fights that most time took me.
    - Honestly all the time I was completely lost about upgrades, I didn't wanna give the wrong ember to the wrong blacksmith I did so little with upgrades :(
    - Didn't even know I had the DLC (game was gifted to me, and tbh "Dark Souls prepare to die edition" doesn't scream DLC).
    On the good side though:
    - Didn't die to the lava scorpion boss
    - Didn't die vs Seath
    - Never got the curse that reduces half your HP
    - Lowkey didn't have trouble with Tomb of Giants.
What are your epic fails and wins on your first run?

    New Dark Souls player...

    Posted: 09 Jan 2021 01:19 AM PST

Hello, I've never played Dark Souls (any of the games) before and I'm currently playing through DS: Remastered. I'd really appreciate any build advice you have.

I started putting points into STR because I heard the zweihander was really good, but after further play and research I think I want to go more for a DEX build, so I've been putting all my souls into DEX, END, and VIT. However, I did get my STR to about 20 before I started with DEX. I farmed a bunch of titanine shards in Undead Parish so I have the Great Sycthe +5, Uchigatana +5, and Tower Shield +3. I'm also wearing a combination of hard leather armor (chest), elite knight (arms and legs), and black leather (head).

In terms of gameplay, I did the first bell in Undead Parish, went through the forest below the blacksmith and cleared it (didn't fight butterly yet though), went through the depths below Undead Burg and defeated the Gaping Demon, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I backtracked to Firelink and that's where I am now.

I'm not sure what I'm doing and have only looked at a couple suggestions on reddit regarding weapons and such, but I'd greatly appreciate any advice on what armor/weapons to use, and what skill points to prioritize when leveling up. I'm not sure my exact level but I think my attributes look something like: DEX: 24 STR: 20, END: 20, VIT: 17. Also I started as a Pyromancer so I also have the Pyromancy FLame +2.

    Thanks!

Playing Souls games while listening to podcasts?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:23 PM PST

Is audio needed to be able to play these games?

I was planning on getting into the souls series (have Dark Souls on the way but might play bloodborne first), and I like to listen to podcasts while playing games. Wanted to know whether or not audio is needed to be able to defeat bosses and enemies or are visual cues enough? Thanks!

    First PVP was a blast!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 05:44 PM PST

First time play through and just got to Anor Londo. Decided to try a summon sign and got first invader. I was completely and utterly destroyed but I had so much fun! Maybe only got a few hits in. Guess I'm be working on my backstab technique more. He rubbed it in a bit but was a gentleman and a scholar. Allowed me to reset, heal and take him on again. Well played sir. I was Asked if I wanted to indict him after I lost and I said no. Is that normal or only for same covenant?
