The Royal Sorcerer, and Navlaan Posted: 06 Oct 2019 07:50 AM PDT Dark Souls 2 is full of odd characters perhaps not found in the other games. You have one who sat petrified for perhaps eons for how powerful he was and seems none worse for wear, a talking head, and a being trapped outside of the cycle. But the one we're covering now isn't so much one character as he is two, it's the Royal Sorcerer, and the being known as Navlaan. Yet perhaps the oddest thing about them isn't so much what they are, but just how deep their connections to Drangleic potentially go. Let get the biggest hurdle of this theory out of the way, Navlaan is indeed a separate entity to the Royal Sorcerer, and those are the names that will be used to address them. He's not a Jekyl/Hyde persona split, he's not the true persona of the Royal Sorcerer, Navlaan is his own entity. Now some of you might jump to the description of the Darkstorm hex, which states a heretic sorcerer named Navlaan was executed along with his entire village for attempting the restore the art of resurrection, but this is easy to refute. The Navlaan we speak with never wishes to restore lives, only take them. Should you invoke his ire, he'll hunt you down with such aggression it makes the Forlon and Pursuer look lazy. Therefore, the Navlaan possessing the Royal Sorcerer can't be the spirit of that exiled sorcerer, so who is he? The answer to that doesn't lie in who he is, but rather what he is. Listen to his dialogue, it's very clear he isn't human
The latter is far more obvious to the point, so why did I include the former? Because it further hints us to what Navlaan is. Navlaan is some sort of spell given sentience, but what form of magic could possibly be sentient? Sentience requires thought, emotion, being...all of which can be found or traced in someway to Hexes. There are numerous hexes that state they are built from emotion, and Children of Dark are from the Abyss (a corruption of the Dark where hexes come from), and never in the Souls series has there been a sorcery or miracle that seems to have an emotion or life of its own. Navlaan then, is a sentient Hex, that is what The Royal Sorcerer managed to create and why he sealed himself away. Being a Hex, Navlaan only wants to prove his strength to his Vessel (and fun fact, that is a very literal term for the Royal Sorcerer since he uses no staff or chime in the fight, for he is the catalyst to our eager Hex). But why and how were they locked away in the first place? Why is the Royal Sorcerer royal? Now is where we begin to dive deep into their quest line. Navlaan wants you to kill four people, he's must be a low INT Hex though because he's just quick to believe you've killed them should you give the items he asks for as proof (all of which can be attained through non-lethal means). The four targets have no real connection to each other, but it's the connection of two of his marks that we'll focus on. To get Gilligan and Cale out of the way, they're petty hits Navlaan gives you to test your mettle and out of anger respectively. Felkin and Emerald Herald though, come from a much more deep seated place. Haven't you ever asked yourself how The Royal Sorcerer locked them both away, despite the lever that disarms the barrier (and presumably starts it up) is on the other side of the room. Or why the Sunset Staff was originally in Aldia's Keep. Or how he even knew about Felkin and the Emerald Herald. Giligan and Cale must've met the Royal Sorcerer in their travels (Cale most assuredly as Navlaan saw and got booped by him), but how does he come to learn of Felkin and the Emerald Herald? Let's start with Felkin, a fellow Hexer (and a personal favorite NPC.) Felkin seems to know more about The Dark than he lets on, and seemingly more about Drangleic consider he says
Remember, the Sunset Staff was originally found outside Aldia's Manor, just outside of where the Royal Sorcerer is sealed, in a seal that seems to require two people to operate. Are you connecting the dots? The Royal Sorcerer and Felkin were once together, obviously a close part of King Vendrick's court (he is called the Royal Sorcerer after all) as they were skilled in the Dark (something Vendrick and Aldia wanted to understand). The Royal Sorcerer messed up though and created Navlaan, though with the help of Felkin, sealed himself away, and Felkin would become an outcast (in fact that title might make more sense now beyond his origins as a Melfian scholar and the social status of hexers). As for the hit, Navlaan wants revenge for Felkin having a hand in sealing him away, and plus, how could he know how formidable Felkin is? Maybe that's also why Felkin wields Pyromancies, just in case Navlaan ever came knocking. But I'm getting off topic, let's end this discussion with the Emerald Herald and why Navlaan wants her dead. Look at his biting dialogue as he describes her
He's staking his entire contentment on her death. Not for the asshole overcharging ladders, not for the guy who booped his snoot, and not for the guy who had a hand in sealing him away. It's all for The Emerald Herald. Why? He's jealous. Remember, he's a sentient Hex, a spell that wants nothing more than to demonstrate his strength perhaps not only to his vessel, but to the royal court. But Vendrick and Aldia had other plans after finding that the Dark was a dead end, and sought to make a being born of dragons, contrived by men. Something to break them out of the cycle, just like the Dragons were. Yet even that failed, not that Navlaan cared or perhaps even knew. All he could do then was sit with his vessel, unused and unwanted, thinking about Vendrick and Aldia's next experiment, and the underlying thought that it was better than him. No wonder he feels at peace at her supposed death. [link] [comments] |
Been playing this game obsessively the last few weeks... Posted: 06 Oct 2019 01:31 AM PDT Just felt like sharing my experience. Will get to DS2 in just a bit, a quick history of my souls experience: I finished dark souls remastered last month. And when NG+ started I stopped the game, spun up a new character (this time going for a str buid) and played that one all the way through to the lord vessel. Then I felt like going for DS2 ,since I was interested in the overarching story and wanted to find out what happens next. So far I've already played three characters and the furthest I've gotten is dragon aerie. For some reason the game compels me to stop and start with a new character just to try out the different builds. Gotta say , there is no other game that has made me behave this way. There breadth of possible build is truly insane, makes me wish I was around before miracles (lightning) were nerfed hard (I've read a bunch about it). Currently I'm on a knight build trying quality weapons. Decided to try out the caestus ... And holy shit it feels amazing. Powerstancing two +10 - a video game hasn't made me feel this badass in a long time. Not only PVE, but a lot of times even PVP it is crazy good. I don't know if it is just me catching people off guard, but the stun lock + unexpectedly high damage banishes invaders quite effectively. The NPC quests are awesome and I love that there are a few NPC that don't really have any quests or direct backstory and are just present at random locations as summons. I'm a but conflicted on the fact that they directed humanity from DS1 in favour of the human effigies. In my first couple of runs I was very nervous about using the effigies and did not know exactly how careful I need to be in spending them. But I've warmed up to it now and it is less painful than losing a large number of soft humanity like in DS1. The health loss was a real shock at first but the ring of binding makes life much easier and striking that balance between your effigies and health pool can be satisfying. Some thoughts on what I've felt are the negatives about this game. I have mixed feelings on Majula - while it's definitely gorgeous , the NPCs there break me from the immersion quite a bit. For example, you may free Rosabeth and do the needful to move her to Majula after you've already got Carhilion in Majula, at this point if you talk to her in Majula, she will continue stating that she's in search of Carhillion , while the dude is a few meters away. She only states she finally found him after you've progressed to a certain stage in the game. Another one is the emerald herald: for someone you need to speak with very often , to say the same line about seeking souls in its entirety , seems like a weird decision by the developers. I get it... All NPCs have some line they use when you interact with them , the blacksmiths , Chloanne .. all of them , yes I accept. But the herald's line is a tad bit long and you speak to her way more often than any of the others. (Unless you are trying an SL1 run of course). Another gripe I have is the nature of ganks in some places. I understand ganks are a staple of dark souls , but some of the ganks in this game are just tiresome ; like the spiders in the lower brightstone bonfire. Yes I know I can use a torch and they scurry away , but the fun is when you sometimes get 'hit' when they try to jump dodge you as you walk by. Ok that's all I have to say for now. Please hold back any spoilers beyond Aldia's keep :D . Thanks for reading! TL;DR : game is amazing and the range of possible build is staggering... but I'd really like the emerald herald to stop greeting me with the same (long) line about collecting souls. Posted: 06 Oct 2019 06:18 AM PDT I'm in the gutter. There was this massive spider looking thing. I killed it, only after to read the signs and it read things like "look closely" "friend ahead" "regret!" What did I mess up? [link] [comments] |

I’m playing this game for the first time, and there’s something I need to say. Posted: 06 Oct 2019 07:20 AM PDT |
Posted: 06 Oct 2019 11:09 AM PDT I have played this game for a long time. Beat it on ng, and have now started a dex character, almost completely beat the game again, and I just barely found out that if I hit the left or right button when buying arrows it goes up/down by ten. I am in the third dlc for fucks sake. This whole time I have just been holding the up button. Lmao at my stupidity [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Oct 2019 11:06 AM PDT Hello! My name is Ben, and I'm looking for some people to play Dark Souls 2 on the PS3 with me. My PS name is ironBEN2001 I'm not too great at the game, but I'm looking to get better and hopefully make some good friends along the way. Cheers, and may you never lose your souls! -Ben Badpoor [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Oct 2019 12:12 PM PDT as stated in the title, I seem to be remembering something wrong, and yet it feels like I'm right. is there any way Navlaan can be in Majula as a vendor NPC/resident? I seem to remember having him there, but that was so long ago. I started playing Dark Souls 2 in late 2015 to early 2016. I had only one character on NG+6, but due to shitty power issues I lost my entire PS3 data to a system wipeout. can anybody help making sense of this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Oct 2019 10:27 PM PDT Why Aldia has that shape? it's a giant meat mass wrapped in fire. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Oct 2019 01:12 PM PDT I am having the hardest time defeating the fume knight on my first play through. Looking for a little help to get it knocked out and I can finish up the game. I'm playing SOTFS on Xbox one and my soul memory is 3,680,793 [link] [comments] |
Switching to lower graphics for better AI Posted: 06 Oct 2019 06:49 AM PDT My laptop is overkill for DS2 and even DS3 run smoothly. I run it on full resolution with high settings but i feel like there is delay in attack, AI problems, glitchy enemy attack at highest setting. However the moment i lower down my settings, i get better experience and even online pvps felt better. Can anyone else confirm this thing? or is it just me? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Oct 2019 12:41 PM PDT Any merchants that sell homeword bones? I know that the feather exist, but i'm not that far [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Oct 2019 03:27 AM PDT I've got the next 24 hours to myself so who's up for some online interactions? P.S. Sorry if there's a more specific place to put this kinda new [link] [comments] |
the game should have more bosses that you can kill using the everionment Posted: 06 Oct 2019 10:43 AM PDT a thing that i really like in the pursuer boss fight is that you can choose to fight him normally or using the ballistas, in my opinion the game should have more bosses like this, it gives more freedom to the player to choose how to play [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Oct 2019 03:27 AM PDT I'm trying to get my devotion to the sunlight conevant up. What's the best place to leave a summon sign? Tried a few places with no luck. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Oct 2019 01:28 AM PDT I'm at the rotten boss fight, but he seems too hard for me to fight. I've used the summons but to no avail. Should I try fight another boss instead or try use different weapons? I've beat the lost sinner. In using a +4 bastard sword and a shield that fully blocks attacks (idk what it's called). I'm on SotFS. Edit: I'm on a strength build too with full draelengaic (can't spell it lol) armour. [link] [comments] |
