My ranking of the top ten worst enemies in Dark Souls 1

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 05:15 PM PST

Today I'm ranking the enemies of Dark Souls 1 based on how much they frustrate me. Keep in mind I do not know the official names of these enemies, and won't be looking them up because fuck you. So here we go.

    10) Torch hollows - Despite being brittle as hell, their charge move where they can hit you multiple times is devastating to low vitality characters, and they usually come in groups

    9) Oolacile mages - The damage these guys can put out is insane, they usually have other enemies that protect them, and later in the DLC will shoot at you from the dark. Also their laugh is weird and I do not like it.

    8) Dogs - With lightning fast attacks and the ability to cause the bleed effect, as well as coming in packs, the dogs in Dark Souls are a nuisance whenever they show their faces. Thank god for shields though, otherwise the dogs would be much higher on the list. The dogs in Blighttown get a free pass because they can actually do other things besides rush you to death.

    7) Poison dart men - I don't need to explain this one. At least they kill themselves sometimes.

    6) Bonewheels - Once again, no explanation needed. I would have them higher but there is a shortcut that you can use to avoid most of them in the catacombs, and I don't go to the area with them in the painted world too often.

    5) Hydras - Specifically the one in darkroot basin. If you are a melee character only, having to avoid the heads and counter can be very frustrating. Also one of the heads in darkroot basin is literally impossible to reach without exploiting the AI. It's such a shame that you have to fight one of these things to even access the DLC.

    4) Ghosts - Requiring to be cursed or the use of a consumable item to even hurt these things is painful enough as is, but them hiding in walls, attacking in groups, and the ability to stunlock you if your unlucky makes me dread going to new Londo ruins with a low poise and/or vitality character.

    3) Those rolling cat things - Alright to be honest, I haven't fought these guys in about 30 playthroughs, so I can't really judge them properly, but because of these things I make it a priority to get the crest of Artorias just so I don't have to fight these things or the Hydra.

    2) Channelers - I know some of you are going to laugh at me for this, but I hate these things. Buffing enemies, teleporting with invincibility frames, long ranged attacks with decent damage, and they always use the environment against you. They do have one of my favorite enemy designs though.

Honorable mentions: Spear hollows (Sometimes I forget that kicking is a thing, ok?), Necromancers, Skeletons, Bone beast thingys, Ricard, Slimes, Resistance, those messages that block you from interacting with other things, Drakes, and Spear Silver Knights.

    1. Those two rats in Undead Parish at the Hellkite bridge - these two rats have been a constant pain in the ass since I started playing this game. Everytime I fight these two I either get stunlocked until I'm pushed off the ledge, killed the stunlock outright, or get poisoned and have to go back to the bonfire. I'm serious, these guys have killed me more than Ornstein and Smough. I know you can bypass them with a different route or maybe with alluring skulls, but every time I play the game I say to myself "The rats won't kill me this time, I'm good at the game now, there is no way I'll get wobbled off the edge" and then they kill me. I can't kill them at a range, because the only area where you can shoot them is right in front of them. In short, I hate the Hellkite rats, harder than most bosses

I do not accept criticism on my Dark souls skills concerning the Hellkite rats, feel free to share any other thoughts you have though, I hope you enjoyed my list.

O&S are DEAD PRAISE THE SUN

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 05:03 AM PST

thanks everyone for helping me yesterday

i ended up farming silver knights for souls and got a few of their swords, so I levelled one up to +3 and it was doing like 190 damage on them

so i practised clearing out the sentinels and that archer and summoned Solaire, he was on like half health and basically just distracted Smough the whole time. Surprisingly he survived to the end

they were fun as fuck i can't lie they were great

    Dark Souls, but prose poetry?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 02:11 PM PST

Hey everyone. I recently started replaying one of my favorite games ever, Dark Souls (first time playing Remastered), and thought it would be fun to "write" my way through Lordran, as if I were keeping a record of the people I met and the places I saw.

This started out as a journal, and evolved into something more resembling prose poetry... if I had to categorize it. By that logic, I guess this is fan art?

Anyway, I wanted to share with the community that loves the game as much as I do. Definitely a nerdy, out-there project, but I hope you enjoy.

    ----

Surviving Lordran: Shine on, Sweet Shrine

    Gazing into the bonfire.
I sip from my flask, beset by darkness,
    — And I wonder,
Could this be my place of peace?
Sit beside me, weary visitor of my imagining.
And point in any direction. Any at all.
I will tell of the terrors that await yonder.

Up the path to our right,
A yellowed aqueduct braces the chasm.
    How combine the scents,
Of undead, vermin, and stale water?
Trudge that way, friend, and you'll soon know.
Begin your journey with soggy boots,
And a weapon heavy with rats blood.
When the wind dies, you can hear them from here.
All shuffling and grunting and gurgling.
    Bones escaping through paper skin,
    Scraping along stone.
Without the crackle of these embers,
    I wouldn't sleep a wink.

Through those ruins and down the stairway,
Lies a resting place most restless.
    Where death's heavy slumber,
Is as fragile as a midday nap.
    To even a respectful approach,
Its dead reassemble in challenge, offended.
    Best them, o' ill-mannered trespasser!
    And claim your useless reward.
Brass binoculars, crafted in some faraway land.
How do I know that, you ask?
Because no one who spends time in Lordran,
Would wish to see it any closer.
This land is so overbearing it could swallow us all.

    Deep below this very spot,
Stir the ghostly denizens of a drowned city.
And deeper still, a place wicked, so contemptible,
They dropped a lake on top of it.
The dead who keep it do not permit transients,
    Not without a price.
To walk among them, you must first curse yourself.
By defiling the flesh of the dead.
I'll say one kind thing about those spirits.
If you're ever desperate for an embrace,
    They're eager to oblige.

Along the back corner of the ruins,
    Gouged into the cliffside,
Is a chained lift that will take you closer to the gods.
Or further from them, if you're on the way down,
    As we all sometimes are.
I don't suggest you disturb the sermon, though.
A sorcerer dancing his followers into a frenzy.
    They'll rip you to pieces,
And leave your parts scattered between the pews.
An offering to chaos, under the disguise of order.

Depending on your fortunes as of late,
    The most appealing route,
May be the one just behind us.
A straight, sweet drop into nothingness.
I shoved a golden man to his death, right over there.
    The vilest I'd ever known.
One could simply walk off after him.
    I promise you,
The fire maiden will not talk you out of it.

Indeed, we are surrounded by misery — but still,
Were this not a place of respite,
It would not beckon to the longing and the lost as it does.

I've met magicians of all kinds here.
Students, masters. Both robes and faith in tatters.
One with a hat so large I never glimpsed his face.

I've met a daughter in search of her father,
Hoping with all her heart he'd been drawn to Firelink's calm,
And knowing with all her heart that he never could.

I've met a mad merchant, veins running with snake oil.
He nearly killed me once. Or is it twice, now?
I'd have slain him, were he not the last comedian in Lordran.

And there was the Crestfallen Warrior, too,
Who sat just across the fire from us.
He planned to kill the closest thing I've found to a guide.
For that sin, I did slay him. I did not want to.
The bell far above rang out his impromptu eulogy.
    And I thanked it.

    Even that thirsty, rotting husk,
Splayed over the edge of the well.
To him, salvation was a simple drink of water.
Of course, he never tasted it. The well was deep and dry.
But it says everything that when he was in need,
    He came here.

What Lordran doesn't destroy, it changes forever.
I thank the gods there's still a place to rest,
    And sort those changes out.

Sometimes I look up to the sun,
And meet the waiting eyes of the giant crow,
Who delivered me to this place so long ago.
She has few eggs left to mother over,
    But this I know:

Her nest is far from empty.

Just beat the gargoyles and im excited for more

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:38 AM PST

Ive beaten Bloodborne a few times and have run through DS3 at least 5 times. I always ignored 1 and 2 for some reason. Im finally taking on 1. It's definitely harder for me than 3, but i love the challenge. Unfortunately, a lot of the bosses have been spoiled for me through YouTube over the years, but i haven't seen most of the pre fight cinematics. The cinematic before the gargoyle fight was really cool and im looking forward to exploring this amazing world. Currently maining the battle axe with a quality build, but any weapon advice is welcome.

A new player's thoughts on Dark Souls Remastered

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 08:05 PM PST

I just recently upgraded to a new pc, and got the game. I fucking love it. I'm at some place called the Undead Parish, and I've been trying to parry some black fucker with a sword about as big as I am, and the first time I riposted him for half his health, it was glorious. The claymore I'm using is so fucking chunky and satisfying. I'm getting my ass kicked, but I'm having so much fun. 10/10

Top ten best enemies in Dark Souls

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:55 PM PST

After I made my list of the worst enemies in Dark Souls, I decided that I had to do the opposite. Keep in mind that I don't know the official names of these enemies and I won't look them up because fuck you.

You may be asking: "How does one rank the best enemies in Dark Souls I, game released for PC, PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360/One, and Switch (Remastered)?" I dunno, I'll figure that out as go, so here we go.

    10) Mimics - Honestly, I love these guys. They sound cool, they can drop the symbol of avarice, and lets be real here, it's probably the most recognizable enemy in the series, in and out of the fandom.

    9) Havel(?) - Do you remember fighting this guy for the first time? Yeah, you got destroyed (or you fought him at later levels you loser). This guy packs some serious punch. He loses some points for not using said punch to break down the wooden door that's trapping him in the tower though.

    8) Those plant guys - These guys drop moss, so that's all they need to make the list. Genuine question though: Has anyone ever used the bloodred moss clumps?

    7) Crystal lizards - On one hand, I feel bad for killing these little guys. one the other hand, It's hilarious to flip these guys with a strike weapon. No other "enemy" fills me with such glee to encounter.

    6) Trees - Honestly what are these things? Why do they exist? Why are they sentient? Also does this count as an enemy? I'm counting it.

    5) Vagrants - I still remember my first time seeing one of these. I was running across the beams to get to Gwyn's boss room, and I saw a red vagrant to the left of the bridge to the stairway down to Gwyn. I believe I died trying to kill it, and once I came back it was gone. I was seriously wondering if my game was alright.

    4) Knight Kirk - You gotta respect this guy's determination, he'll rush you no matter how dangerous it is, he'll track you to the ends of the earth, and his fashion is pretty nice too.

    3) Darkroot frogs - These things are adorable, I love them so much. It honestly hurts to kill these guys, which is why I spare the trees so often, there isn't much past the tree anyway so it works out in the end.

    2) Sexy hollow in New Londo ruins - No explanation needed.

    1) Crossbow balder knight - The crossbow balder knight, better known as that doofus in the doorway right before the Iron golem boss fight, is a completely unique enemy. They are the only one of their kind. I'm pretty sure they have the same stats as the crossbow hollows in the undead parish, because this guy does literally no damage whatsoever. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if nobody had died to this guy at all, his only hope of killing you without you trying to die is for him to push you off the pathway with a bolt and hope you fall into the fortress again. After awhile, I started to pity the guy, it isn't his fault that he sucks at his job after all. I just kick him aside now, he doesn't put up much resistance.

Thanks for reading my stupid list. Be sure to share your thoughts if you have any left after reading this.

    advice regarding mimics

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:20 AM PST

when you are about to open a chest always check the chain to the right of it, if the chain it rolled back and in a circle shape it's safe to open, however if the chain is pointing out toward the player in an almost straight line then it's a mimic. this is always true in ds1 and ds3 as far as I can tell not so sure about ds2 tho as it's the game I have played the least.

Took another stab at Havel (same result)

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 09:52 PM PST

So I finally got the upper bell rang.

Explored lower undead burg, made it thru the jerks who jump out at you. Found the guy behind the locked door who gave me a bunch of stuff, and got stomped on by the poison monster and his poison doggos. Decided that didn't seem fun at all.

So I got my self upgraded to 32, bought a ton of firebombs and decided to give Havel another go of it.

Didn't get stomped immediately this time so that was fun.

I made it thru all my firebombs and he was at about 50% health and had to switch to my pyro which is dog slow sadly, made my first few shots ok, but then missed one roll and ate that rediculous club.

I've read to backstab but only get that about 5% of the time so I thought ranged attack would be better.

Maybe just buy 10x more firebombs next time.

Is it possible, and if so how do i make black knight halberd +10 and +15?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:55 AM PST

So I got a new favorite weapon that is the black knight halberd. I made it +5 which makes it pretty decent. I gave the ember and the large ember to andre but I don't see the option of making it +6

Just finished the game for the first time (RANT)

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:45 PM PST

Well I just finished DS1 for the first time aaaand..... Man was it an experience,it frustrated the living sh*t out of me but I loved it in the same time. I was entering the game with a mind set that I'm going to have my ass handed to me every 5 seconds and at least for me after the first few hours (gargoyle boss to be exact) it wasnt that hard when I got used to it, except some bosses. I would like to mention some points and opinions.

Ornestein and Smough Damn was this boss hard, it was the only boss in the base game I NEEDED a summon and gold resin to beat. However hard it was I loved the whole concept. A thing that made me laugh was when you kill Smough, Ornestein comes to his body and does some type of "ritual" while if you kill Ornestein, Smough just straight up slams him with a hammer.

Bed of chaos To be honest it's the only boss fight I didn't like. It's much less of a fight and just destroy 3 bugs while repeatedly getting thrown in a hole and it just infuriated me (tbh it took me 30min to realize if I equip a better shield the arms won't knock me off so it's my fault) I also kept missing the branch on the way to the middle.

Knight Artorias It was a really hard boss fight for me but a really interesting one too. However hard it was I still loved it.

Manus I was having problems with this fight so I decided to summon Sift for help, then I noticed he did next to nothing to help. He aggroed him twice for one second which was enough for me to pop an estus flask though.

Gwyn It wasn't a really hard fight when I noticed you can parry him which I didn't think it made any sense since he's the last Big Bad Boss Guy let's say,but then I read its to resemble how he has weaken over the years and is no longer "worthy" so I guess that makes sense.

Right now I started a second playthrough as a pyromancer. I must say I did have Hugh hopes for the game and not only did it deliver it over delivered let's say.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:28 PM PST

Just started another playthrough (not NG). Just about the second I walk into undead burg I get invaded by somebody named "FARTED?" Dude walked in with such high level armor I couldn't do more than 1 damage to him each attack, and had a Dragon Greatsword and just kept spamming me with the shockwave. If you're on here, just wanna ask you; do you feel good about yourself? Do you feel good that you suck so bad you literally had to twink like a mf in the first zone of the game?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 03:48 AM PST

If you missed him at Sen's Fortress (like I did), you can still go back to him, even after you've done Duke's Archives past the jail part (so long as you didnt actually kill Seath the Scaleless). I got up to the boss, my buddy clued me in that I missed Logan. So I went back for him, and then immediately saw him again in Duke's, captured. So yeah, if ya got to duke's, ya didnt fuck it up.

Finally beat Ornstein and Smough! Dex warrior at 60, should I get some int for the next stage of the game?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:28 PM PST

Hey folks. I spent the last few days on Ornstein and Smough. After countless deaths and blowing through most of my humanity, I took a break to level up myself and my weapons. Also for the first time, I actually looked for some advice on the fight. I killed Smough with a lightning spear and then Ornstein with Quelaags fire sword.

This was an insanely tough battle with out some attention to my gear and weapon. Now I am considering my direction for the next stage of the game.

I have been playing a as Dex warrior with 40 in dex and 20 in str. All my other points are in endurance and vitality.

I picked up the great magic weapon from the chandelier and I am wondering if it is worth investing in int for a weapon buff. I haven't tried anything other than melee this point, so I don't really understand how the magic system works. Is it worth getting int at this point in the game or should I just stick with melee?

Finally trying to push through the frustration and play ds1

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 06:21 PM PST

So in psn sale I saw ds1r and decided why not I have money finally, so I bought and downloaded it and bare in mind I've not played ds1 since 2014 and even then I didn't understand anything so I couldn't even defeat the gargoyles or summon help cause I didn't understand humanities. But 7 years of playing other souls Bourne games I thought taught me how to be ready for ds1 but honestly I was not and am not prepared. My paths are currently: .Sens fortress of frustrating axes and snakes .Robin hoods band of merry men in dark wood forest cause I approached from wrong direction I think .demon ruins but I don't want to go the normal way cause I want to save sun bro but need humanity but can't get any more and due to ps5 demon souls the amount of people playing is low .ghost town and that room filled with ghosts. .asylum boogaloo 2 attack of butt slam 2 .sif.....but I don't want to kill the goodest doggo. .Skelton warriors. So here I am a magic user who has with great difficulty done shitetown and is struggling to progress. But its not dark souls without some frustration including losing 13k souls in sens fortress on the ceiling blades.

    Blighttown

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 06:19 PM PST

Hey! Brand new to the soulsborne series and of course starting with Dark Souls 1. I've only heard a little bit about the game and much of that regarded Blighttown and it being awful. I'm at the bonfire at the bottom and just have to say I LOVE the atmosphere of Blighttown. Going down there for the first time with the lighting, lack of ambient music (most areas don't have ambient music but this felt even scarier) and what I've heard about it, seeing the location update and going through Blighttown had me terrified, excited, and on the edge of my seat while playing, although gravity is a bitch. But it's one of my favorite areas in the game so far and has definitely been a highlight of playing Dark Souls so far.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:30 PM PST

So a while ago i posted about how i discovered a shortcut to blighttown through the valley of drakes. As i am on my first play through, i assumed this was the right way to go. A helpful hollow informed me that i should go through the depths and explore that area. I was fine, found a bonfire, blah blah. Then i found some basilisks. I assumed that behind them was the way out of this cesspool. Unfortunately RNGesus was feeling evil that day. As soon as i stepped within sight of those froggy bastards, they did the fart of death. Every. Damn. Time. I have only recently discovered how to go through the depths. not where i was going So now my jolly sunbro is stuck in the depths with about 200 hp and rat gunk. So, anyone have a build tip? something new and refreshing that preferably is good at killing basilisks?
