Combat in Dark Souls 2 vs. Dark Souls 3

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 09:17 AM PST

I finally got Dark Souls 3 over the holidays and while it's still early I'm not impressed. Everybody says the combat in DS2 is the worst of the series, but that's not true.

DS2's combat is almost meditative, like a game of chess against your enemies, and everything moves at a realistic speed that adds to the tension. You can commit to an attack, then realize after pressing the button that it's too slow and you're going to get hit first - and there's nothing you can do about it. You have to be patient and strategic and thoughtful with everything you do or you can miss or come out the worse in an exchange.

DS3, by contrast, feels like a hectic button masher. Everything moves quickly, so you roll and spam R1 non stop. It's hard to roll under a lot of attacks without getting hit, and it's almost impossible to circle around enemies. Parrying is ridiculous - I was bad at it in DS2, but everyone is moving so fast in DS3 that it's become even harder to do successfully. I also found that it's harder to react, especially around monsters - they don't broadcast their attacks at all and sometimes there's no good strategy for fighting them like rolling between their legs, circling to one side, like in other Dark Souls games, which means they don't have a weakness or blind spot you can learn to exploit.

Compounding the panic-y feel, it's incredibly hard to stay locked on to enemies. Rolling, moving sideways, using the environment, etc. can all cause you to lose your lock.

I also find the design of the levels kind of stressful because there are so many paths and branches to return to, and a lot of them lead nowhere. There were always choices in Dark Souls 1 and 2, but they were big choices and you could keep a mental map of places to return to. In DS3 there can be three, four, five choices in one area, another two or three on the next, etc. and so on, so I've found myself running back and forth trying to figure out where I haven't been or how to get back to where I made the last decision. They'll have things like ledge drops where you have no idea if you're dropping into the right place or how to get back to where you were, which means you're constantly doubling back.

It's still a good game, but I vastly prefer DS2.

Anyone else have the same experience?

How to make a +10 weapon within 90 minutes of starting the game.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:10 AM PST

Here's a "quick" guide for you guys. Some part may not be very detailed, so if you want to know something i havent written down, just ask.

For this you can choose any class, but im going to use Grand Lance (GL from now on) so would pick Knight. You have to choose Bonfire Ascetic (BA) as starting gift.

Go to Majula, get titanite shard (TS) Maughlin shop up the ladder. Get other stuff if you want.

Go to Forest Of Fallen Giant. Not much to do here, so just run to the Bonfire in Cardinal Tower. From here, go upstairs and break the door with your weapon. Kill crystal lizard for TS and move on. Gather the rest of loot if you want. From Bonfire, go down the ladder and follow the road outside. Go over the rooftops and into the cave to talk to Cale. Spam the the action button to get the key to his mansion in Majula. Head back and follow the tree roots up to the walls. You can climb the small ladder and fight Pursuer if you want, or you can do it later. It doesnt matter. Create shortcut Bonfire by blowing up the barrels by the wall for easy access later.

Head back to Majula and use the key you got. In the room straight ahead is a Pharros' Lockstone (PL). Grab it. Upstairs is a chest with 3x TS. Explore for more loot in basement if you want. Head back to Cardinal Bonfire

Use the shortcut and turn left and jump down. On the wall to the right is a hole into the Ballista room. Kill all enemies and go down the ladder. The chest is a trap, so roll away when you open it. Collect 1x TS. Use PL on the face in the wall and hit the glowing spot with your weapon. Open chests for ring and 1x Titanite Slab (TSL). Back in the main room, knock on the door with your weapon and wait for enemy to open it. Kill them and open chest for ring and 1x Large TS (LTS).

Next to do is to kill the boss, The Last Giant. He will drop the Soldier key. Head back up and trough the shortcut door. Go across the small bridge next to the ladder that leads to the Bonfire. Unlock the door and turn left. In this room, the glowing item to the right is the GL. Collect and head back to the Bonfire. Buy the key from the old lady. Head back to Majula.

Unlock Blacksmiths house and rest at the Bonfire. Go into Blacksmith house and pick up the bow in the chest. Upgrade GL to +4, and buy some arrows. 10 is enough. Use rest of the souls to level STR and DEX. GL needs 22 STR and 18 DEX. Head back to Cardinal Bonfire

Kill Persuer if you havent done it already. Head to the birds nest behind the boss room and get a ride with the bird.

Welcome to The Lost Bastille. Open chests and pick up Dull Ember. Dont forget to rest at the Bonfire. Head outside and go left. Follow the edge all the way to find 1xLTS. Go inside the window and kill the guard. Next, run towards the barrel to push it over the edge and kill the dogs. Jump down and open the door. Loot chest for Fragment Branch Of Yorne (FBOY). Kill Pursuer for souls if you want. Go back inside and up the ladder. Go outside and kill the big guy. Ulock the door and loot the chest and talk to the NPC if you want. Head out the other door and look to your right. You can walk on this ledge and climb the ladder for 1xLTS. Jump down and continue straight ahead. Kill the two big guys here. At the stairs, push barrel down the stairs and the explosion will create a hole in the wall. Enter for Blacksmith McDuff Bonfire. Rest and light torch at Bonfire. Enter Blacksmith room and light up the lamp thing. Loot the chests and give McDuff the Dull Ember. Upgrade GL to +6. Buy LTS from McDuff if needed. He got unlimited for sale. Rest at Bonfire and get the loot from the final chest. Head back to Cardinal Bonfire.

Rest at Bonfire and choose "Burn" from the menu. Burn BA. Now head for the Ballista Room. A few new enemies here this time. Jump down and open the trap chest for 3x Titanite Chuncks (TC). Not much left to do here now. Kill The Last Giant and Pursuer bosses for alot of souls, and head back to Majula.

Level up STR and DEX to use GL properly. Go to Blacksmith and level up GL to +8 and head towards The Shaded Woods.

Enter the room with pyromancer chick. The first thing you do when you get there is standing in the middle of the room and look at the door you entered. Then look up and to the left. Shoot that door with 6 arrows, and it will break. This will trigger the escape of all the trollguys with big balls, but you can leave the room and pick them off one by one, or you can stand just outside the door and hit them in group when they try to gank you. After they are dead, use FBOY on the statue and pull the device. The next room has a Bonfire and some loot. From there, kill your way ahead until you reach the next Bonfire. From here enter the door that leads to a foggy area. For this area you just have to stick to the right side and take a swing at the big trees when you pass them, to distract the enemy. When you reach the end of the road turn left and hug the wall. You can pick up 2 chests on this route, and it will lead you to the Shaded Ruins.

Here its not much to collect for us now. Grab the TC near the first Bonfire. From the Bonfire, go upstairs and look towards the loot. Straight ahead from here you can see a chest, and this is where the TC is. Kill the Boss and continue your journey until you reach Brightstone Cove Tseldora.

After killing the "boss" Prowling Magus and Congregation you will reach the place where you will find the 2 last TC you need, but this area is to much work giving a decent and understandable guide, so just explore it and kill Crystal Lizards until you get 2xTC. After that, head back to one of the Blacksmiths and upgrade youe weapon to +10

PS! If you go for GL, dont forget Old Leo Ring

    Good luck, Skeleton.

Some thoughts after beating DS1 and SotFS for the first time

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 02:17 PM PST

So I decided to give the Dark Souls games a go over the Christmas period and boy what a blast it's been. I have a farily extensive background in RPGs, but somehow didn't think these games would be for me, despite having watched loads of YouTube videos about them. I finally got an XBOX controller for my shitty laptop and loaded up DS1 Prepare to Die (my machine can't run Remastered) thinking I would hit a wall and just give up. But somehow, 10 days later I was killing Gwyn and feeling something no other game had made me feel before. Particularly the moment when I found the elevator from Undead Parish to Firelink Shrine something just clicked. Despite the lacklustre later areas and bosses, AotA more than makes up for it. Nothing took more than the 30+ attempts to do O&S, but it overall was honestly just one of the most immersive gaming experiences I've ever had. It's really magical how it manages to make you genuinely pesevere and get better, and I'm really excited for future playthroughs and trying new builds. Being thrown into NG+ straight away, and the slicing through the Asylum Demon in 10 seconds when he took me at least 5-6 attempts my first time was just such a good feeling.

I felt so intrigued by all of this I immediately got SotFS, having a decent idea about its original reception, and right from the get go it was a shock to the system. I realised straight away I would have to figure out a very different way to approach fights, especially the ganks. I also had joined CoC when I got to Majula, without having a clue as to what it was, all the way till Ruin Sentinels, when I started to wonder why I couldn't see any summon signs. Also having to get used to the reducing max health took some time. I found a lot of areas and boss runs to be harder than most bosses in the base game, particularly the runs to Undead Chariot (which was such a cool fight, and so great to figure out wtf was going on), Smelter Demon and Ruin Sentinels to name a few, and a lot of the ganks, especially in the DLC areas, felt absurd (like why are all the Charred Loyce Knights beelining for me when there's 4 others you can go for?). Some of the difficulty definitely felt artificially inflated in those cases, and using the bow to pull single enemies got pretty tedious after a while. I doubt I'll ever git gud enough to take on 4 Alonne Knights charging me while being pelted by greatarrows. I also totally messed up the order of things after that (the game doesn't communicate this to you very well), and first beat Watcher and Defender, then Aldia's Keep, and the Giant Memories. I was saving Vendrick as a late game fight, not realising you need to kill him before Nashandra to face Aldia, and so when I got the cutscene after beating her I was kinda miffed but thankfully I still had the DLC to play.

The DLC definitely did mostly live up to the hype, espcially the fucking Fume Knight. I had seen a couple of short clips of him before, and wondered how a big kinda slow dude with a big kinda slow sword was supposed to be such a legendary fight, and after he kicked my arse for a good 4 hours straight I was definitely converted. The fact that you know what you need to do, but unless your dodge timings are on point, you're fucked. It's the definition of hard but fair, and the feeling of getting those timings down is so satisfying. Similar to Sir Alonne, although I died to him far fewer times, even though that boss run almost made me want to uninstall the game. The Gank Squad fight was the only really stupid boss fight in the DLCs I found (not counting boss runs). In fact, there were many moments where I was screaming bullshit and wanting to turn to game off, but still somehow the game did its magic and I even eventually got through the Frigid Outskirts and beat Lud and Zalen (or maybe I am just a bit of a completionist). Currently Darklurker is the only thing I have left to do, and from the first 2 attempts it shouldn't be too bad. Might hold off for a while though before trying out NG+.

There was something about the atmosphere and tone that I really liked, and this feeling of not having a clue what the next area would be like. The discordant piano when you see Vendrick for the first time was such an unsettling feeling. For me the stories in these games seem to work almost entirely at a symbolic thematic level for the individual search for meaning and purpose in the world and the game's visual language for doing this is so so good. Your tiny character model next to gigantic god-like beings and places which are at once logically coherent, while also in completely bizarre proportions and dimensions added to the sense of being overwhelmed by the forces of life and reality and learning to persevere. And even though I love my lore-heavy Bioware-type RPGs, I believe what Dark Souls (both 1 and 2) manage to do so perfectly is to understand themselves as games first and foremost, and in tying the entire narrative into the act of beating it, which also works at a higher metaphorical level of overcoming personal struggle, particularly in the cyclical way in which this often tends to play out.

Overall I'm just really glad I made to decision to finally try these games out - they've changed the way I look at a lot of things. Although I had more of a 'holy shit' experience with 1 I still overall really liked 2. And I also love how generally cooperative and helpful the community has seemed to be. Genuinely considering buying a PS4 now just to play Bloodborne and DS3 (my laptop can't run that either). This was way longer that originally intended, but I felt like getting all this off my chest with people who might understand, so thanks for reading if you made it this far.

    Sudden drop in invasions?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 05:10 AM PST

Up until around Christmas time 2019, I'd been getting back-to-back invasions in multiple areas. Then suddenly all the activity died down, and nowadays I'm lucky to get even a single invasion every time I launch the game.

I've tried different areas, I've tried different SMs, I've tried invading at different times. Cross-region play on and off. I'm not softbanned.

The only thing I can think of is I swapped ISPs recently, but every other game's online is working fine.

Does anyone know what else could have caused this? I've seen other posts saying that they're still getting constant invasions, so I figure it's something on my side.

Poll: What kind of Dark Souls player are you ?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:55 PM PST

    (1) the kind to excessively farm souls/levels, because you wholeheartedly believe you suck at the game (and accepted it) and need the extra hp/armor/rolling runnning time to have any chance of finishing the game

    (2) a person who just said screw it and decided to skip all the minions (and figured out that you don't need to kill all of them to have the fun of fighting the bosses)

    or

    (3) a person who keeps going back and forth thinking you are a good enough player to fight a boss , but then after a few losses, you decide to go farm again, then go fight the boss again (forever indecisive on whether to study the boss or to farm the souls and levels resulting in wasted souls from deaths because you're not 100% memorizing the minions movesets or the bosses moveset.

I'm #3 :( , but hey i learned, and if the best i can be is #1, then i'll try to be that .

I like to think Pate and Patches are literally the same person.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:55 AM PST

My thinking behind it is pretty simple and I haven't read anything in game that overly convinces me otherwise.

If Patches survives until the end of the world, there's no reason he couldn't have travelled/lived over in Drangleic and took on a "new" identity as Pate where he continued his punishing of the greed of men. I mean, he even changed his voice pretty convincingly to portray Siegward in DS3 at the Cathedral.

Man I love Patches. I figure this has already been discussed into the ground and back but yeah. Something about a character surviving until the end of the world (and retains his sanity, even more so than Gael by following his chosen purpose) is pretty awesome to me.

A few new things I've learned about Dark Souls 2.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:52 AM PST

This game continues to amaze me. Here's what I've learned.

    1. The vents behind the furnace in the Iron Keep can be broken with a heavy attack.

    2. The Darklurker can be flattened. With the right timing, the Darklurker instead of dying it's usual death, killing it with a weapon attack that floors enemies will have it die on the ground instead.

    3. Bomb items can be used to break statues like the ones that spit poison in The Gutter and Black Gulch, which can be helpful if you don't want to waste weapon durability.

    4. The sole Golden Lion Chieftain can respawn multiple times, possibly after beating Aldia. This one needs more testing.

Pure Shield Turtle, No Dodge, No Infusion for PvE?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:52 AM PST

After playing Bloodborne and Sekiro, I've decided to go in the opposite site direction (Only PvE - no PvP). My build goals:

    1. 100% block Greatshield
    2. No infusion
    3. No dodging
    4. Just block and smash

Lots of strength, dexterity, vitality, endurance. Switching between Zweihander and the Large club.

I've just killed Velstadt in NG, and so far so good. Will this style hold up in higher NGs and the DLC?

    Enemies stopped respawning?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:15 AM PST

I've only just started playing DS2 so I'm unaware of how the respawn system works but this seems like a bug.

I've been spawning at the Heide's Ruin bonfire and killing the Old Knight next to it then running back to the bonfire to reset for some quick 'n' easy souls. After a few times doing this the Knight just stopped spawning? I know some enemies don't respawn after they're killed but this one stopped after like 10 deaths?

Is this a bug or is that supposed to happen?

Question about visual appearance of summon signs

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:35 PM PST

If I am hollow while placing my sign down, If I inspect the sign I am shown my hollow self in the portrait. I know that I will appear human while in others' worlds. Will I also appear human in my summon portrait in others' worlds? I play the character exclusively for sunbro co-op in the Lost Bastille, but I've been having trouble being invaded while waiting to be summoned, so I am not always human. It'd be nice to know that I always appear human so that it doesn't hurt the fashion souls/cosplay character.
