Everything You Need To Know About Infusions

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 10:27 AM PDT

Dark Souls 2's infusion system, while much more streamlined than DS1 or Demon's Souls, is still a frequent source of confusion. Hopefully I can break down not only what each infusion does, but when they're beneficial and with which weapons.

    Elemental (Magic, Fire, Lightning, Dark)

Elemental infusions work very differently depending on whether the weapon you're infusing already has natural elemental damage. Infusing an elemental weapon with a matching element will cause the base damage and scaling for that element to increase and the physical base damage and scaling to decrease. The elemental scaling shown in the stats is almost always about a letter grade higher than it looks, that B is in reality more like an A. It's not advisable to infuse a weapon with a non-matching element. It does funky things to the damage calculations.

Infusing any other weapon causes it to lose a portion of base physical damage and gain a large amount of base elemental damage, usually equal to the now reduced physical base damage. Unfortunately, doing this also wrecks the scaling. The actual values for both physical and elemental scaling will be about half of what the letter grades would lead you to believe. In practice, it shares a lot in common with the Raw infusion; a quick and dirty damage boost that may not be able to keep pace at higher levels. The difference being that physical damage is almost always good, but you'll pretty regularly run into enemies that have high resistance to any given element.

There is another angle, though. Buff spells like Magic Weapon and Sunlight Blade are significantly more powerful on weapons with an elemental infusion than those without. This means that if you're capable of casting a buff, infusing with an element is almost certainly the best choice until you run into something with very high resistance

TLDR: Elemental infusions are good on weapons with high base damage and low scaling or that already have elemental damage and are at their most effective when you can further boost their damage with a buff.

    Poison

Enemies inflicted by poison will take roughly 1000 extra damage over the space of 20 seconds, making it able to kill most normal enemies and take large chunks off of the health bars of even the healthiest bosses (unless they're immune). Weapons infused with poison lose some of their base damage and scaling to gain poison damage and scaling. Unlike elemental infusions, the amount of poison damage they gain is not proportional to the damage the weapon does, and in fact is usually the same, regardless of weapon class or damage. Since most weapons, from daggers to great hammers will inflict the same amount of poison per hit, the most effective poison weapons are ones that can hit a lot of times in a very short period of time. Channeler's Trident and Ricard's Rapier are generally the best at this, but daggers, fist weapons and claws are pretty good too.

Weapons that have natural poison damage are rare and highly varied, so I'll take them on a case by case basis.

    • Mytha's Bent Blades - Can't be infused.
    • Spotted Whip - Highest poison damage per hit when infused. Infuse it.
    • Manslayer - Uninfused, it's a perfectly good weapon that occasionally poisons tanky enemies on long fights. Infuse if you want, but it's good without.
    • Black Scorpion Stinger - Same as the Manslayer, but it's better with a Raw infusion.
    • Sanctum Mace - The only weapon in the game that both has inherent poison damage and can be buffed with Rotten Pine Resin. Don't infuse.

TLDR: Powerful, but only really useful on very specific weapons.

    Bleed

Bleed infusions work similarly to poison infusions with the main difference being that bleed fucking SUCKS.

Okay, that's not entirely fair. Filling a bleed meter inflicts 200 extra damage on the enemy and cuts their stamina bar in half for a short time. This can be very scary in pvp, especially low levels, but since NPCs don't actually use stamina it's basically useless for pve. Generally a bleed infusion is only useful in three very specific situations.

    • Inflicting bleed with a backstab in pvp causes a glitched recovery animation that takes much longer than normal and effectively gives you a second free backstab. Unlike most pvp exploits, this takes basically no skill to do and just feels cheap in general. Don't do it unless you like getting hackusations.
    • The Forlorn weapons actually get better when bleed infused. For whatever reason, it actually increases their dark scaling more than a dark infusion does and barely harms the base damage. Since they also have very high bleed damage, you're pretty likely to bleed someone in just a couple of hits. Unfortunately, you have a hefty damage penalty if you use them and aren't completely hollow, making them pretty much worthless anywhere but the arena.
    • Trying to fight Vendrick without any Giant Souls. 200 damage every 20-30 seconds is pretty terrible, but it's better than anything else when you're fighting someone with 96-100% resistance to everything other damage type.

    TLDR: Bleed is bad.

    Raw

Raw infusions severely reduce a weapon's scaling values, in some cases completely removing them. In return you get a boost to base damage. On weapons that don't have scaling, you lose nothing and gain quite a bit. On a few other weapons, you get a pretty decent damage boost if you don't plan to go over the minimum requirements for the weapon. It's not always clear which ones will be good and which ones won't so I suggest checking Soulsplanner before you commit.

TLDR: Straight upgrade on weapons with no scaling. Sometimes good on others that you only want minimal stats for.

    Enchanted

Much like Raw, the Enchanted infusion heavily reduces existing scaling. Unlike Raw, it does nothing to a weapon's base damage. Instead it adds new scaling that's based on Intelligence, but unlike a Magic infusion the damage it adds is purely physical. It's a very strange infusion and unfortunately not very useful. The problem is that the scaling is so low that in 99% of situations you need extremely high Int (80+) to outperform a Raw infusion, so it's mostly restricted to 99 Int meme builds. The one other situation where it's useful is with the Moonlight Greatsword. An Enchanted infusion converts all of its damage into physical, while still retaining pretty decent Intelligence scaling. It's a surprisingly strong weapon, but it makes the wave motion beams deal no damage so it's not really an upgrade so much as a niche option.

TLDR: To be fair, you need a very high IQ to make it not suck.

    Mundane

A very strange infusion. It removes normal scaling and cuts base damage in half, but adds a new type of scaling that's based on your lowest stat. You have to level every stat evenly to get more damage. Now, you may have seen clips or guides on how to make Mundane OP, but those were from before the nerf. At launch, Mundane was completely, utterly, stupidly broken. To fix that, it was patched so that daggers, crossbows and Santier's Spear lose 90% of their base damage with Mundane, making it a straight downgrade. Nowadays, it's just an interesting gimmick and can take terribad weapons like the Broken Straight Sword and Handmaid's Ladle and bring them up to kind of OK. The stats necessary to get decent damage out of Mundane are enough to get better damage out of a Dark build.

TLDR: Fun-ish gimmick, no longer OP.

    FAQ and tips

It's important to not think of infusions as upgrades so much as specializations. A trap a lot of new players run into is infusing a weapon just because they can.

You can remove and replace infusions whenever you want with no drawbacks, as long as you have the required souls and infusion stones.

No, there's no infusion that improves physical scaling. If you're doing a Strength, Dex or Quality build, you're probably better off leaving things uninfused and using resin when you need a damage boost.

Magic scales with Intelligence, Lightning scales with Faith, Fire scales with either one and Dark scales with both (you have to level them equally).

Poison scales with Dexterity and Adaptability. Bleed scales with Dexterity and Faith. This does not mean they'll do more damage, it just means they'll be inflicted faster.

Shields can be infused with elements and status effects. This improves how well they block that element/effect but reduces their effectiveness against everything else.

Fume Knight was the fight I've been looking for

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 08:35 PM PDT

Very satisfying to beat, first DS2 boss that took me more than 10 tries. Just head and shoulders above anything else I've encountered thus far, more in line with DS3 bosses - Pontiff Sulyvahn comes to mind for some reason. On to Sir Alonne.

Just beat the game for the first time!

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 11:03 AM PDT

I know, very unoriginal post. But I really needed to get this out there.

This is a fantastic souls game.

I first bought this game nearly 4 years ago, and have tried countless times to get into it. Each time I never got too far, and would play DS1 or DS3 instead. This game never felt right for some reason.

But today, after so many years, I've beaten it. And I have to say, it might be one of my favorites. Speaking to lucatiel, the emerald herald, jugo, or anyone else for the last time was truly moving. I feel like DS1 and DS3 are great stories, but this captures the stories of the people in this twisted world so much better.

But of course, now I'm looking for something else to play. Do I bite the bullet and buy a PlayStation to try bloodborne? Sekiro? What's next!

Fun RNG-based challenge run I came up with

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 08:39 AM PDT

I've been playing souls-like for years and I've gotten to a point where I just find them too easy and methodical. I also hate the fact I know every item's location, enemy type and boss, ruining Dark Souls' surprise factor. That's why I came up with a challenge run to experience Dark Souls 2 just like you would as a clueless newcomer.

TL;DR: most actions you perform depend on an rng generator. There are additional restrictions that are not rng-based.

    RULES:

    1. Getting started:

    1. You must use a random name generator to name your character.
    2. Your character's gender, class and gift are completely random. Use an RNG generator.
    3. Your character's hair, facial features, eyebrows, tattoo... are completely random as well. Use an RNG generator.
    4. As soon as you're in control of your new character, drop every piece of armor and weapons you have. You will find/buy gear later.
    5. Join the covenant of champions.
    6. Use an RNG generator to determine which zone you should visit first. You have to kill that area's boss. Going back to Majula to level up/buy gear is allowed. That said, keep in mind merchants are restricted (2, 3).

    2. Actions restricted by RNG:

    1. Whenever you want to level up your character, the stat you're levelling up will be completely random. Use an RNG generator.
    2. Whenever you encounter a bonfire, you'll have to use an RNG generator to decide wether you're allowed to rest next to it or not. If you get a negative result, you can NEVER use that bonfire. If you get a positive result, you're able to use it as much as you want. I suggest making this a 50/50. Majula's bonfire doesn't count; you're able to use it no matter what.
    3. Whenever you want to buy something from a merchant, the item you buy from them will be completely random. If you don't have enough souls for the item the RNG generator expects you to buy, throw the dice again until there's something you can afford. You can try your luck as much as you want, but this could make you lose all of your souls.
    4. Whenever you encounter a chest, there's a 50/50 chance you'll have to drop the item you find in it, no matter how useful it is.
    5. Whenever you complete a zone, the next zone you must complete is random. Use an RGN generator. Going back to Majula is allowed if you need to do anything there, but remember TPing is not allowed (check 3,2).
    6. You can go back to zones you've already completed if you want to farm souls or items. That said, the farming zone will be completely random. Use an RNG generator. If you get a zone you've not completed yet, you must kill at least one boss before going to a different zone.

    3. Additional restrictions:

    1. You're NOT allowed to loot the corpses you find lying around. Enemies you kill can be looted and farmed as much as you want. This restriction makes merchants an important part of the run.
    2. You can't teleport, no matter what.
    3. You can't use healing items.
    4. You can't use human effigies. After your first death, you'll be hollow forever.
    5. You can't leave the Covenant of Champions.

    4. Things you're able to do normally, in case it's not clear:

    1. You can upgrade any weapon you want. Zero restrictions.
    2. You can equip spells normally.
    3. You can wear whatever armor you have and use whatever weapon/shield/spell/item you want, as long as it doesn't heal you.
    4. You can use bonfires as much as you want, as long as you're allowed to use that specific bonfire (check 2, 2).
    5. Enemies can be looted and farmed normally.
    6. You can talk to any NPC.
    7. You can consume boss souls normally. You may also use them to get weapons.
    8. If you're going to a zone where there are no bosses left, with the intent of farming, you're able to leave that zone and pick a different one anytime you want.
    9. You can summon invaders normally.

If you're going to try this, please consider sharing your experiences. I consider this challenge run to be pretty fun but I have no idea if other people will enjoy it as much as I do. Also, English is not my first language so feel free to ask any questions in case I didn't explain myself properly up there.

    Good luck, everyone.

    the implicit hate of ganks/swarms

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 06:14 AM PDT

It is a repeating topic on this subreddit that Dark Souls 2 is full of ganks, swarms, ambushes, etc. , that the other Souls games are not (or are to a lesser extent), and that this makes dark souls 2 worse than them.

Every time, the people who come to defend Dark Souls 2, myself included, focus primarily on explaining how to reduce the swarm-ness or gank-ness of the game (ranged attacks, careful positioning, drawing aggro). But I've been thinking:

Why is it bad Dark Souls Game Design (Tm) to encounter multiple enemies at once?

Adding multiple enemies to an encounter not only increases the difficulty but also changes up strategy. It makes wide sweep attacks more valuable, it makes lock on less valuable, and it makes it easier for the game to punish bad stamina management or risky heals. It makes it more important where you came from in case you need to retreat, and it allows you to make use of bottle necks and environmental hazards more easily. Imho all of these things are good as much as they happen in Dark Souls 2.

Think about how intense the Ruin Sentinels boss fight is compared to if it were 1 Ruin Sentinel with 3x the hit points and twice the damage. That fight would be incredibly boring, but instead the Ruin Sentinels are engaging and challenging while also teaching a valuable lesson about staying locked off of enemies during certain encounters.

In addition, from a roleplay/immersion standpoint--and I realize the term "roleplay" in the RPG has become mostly meaningless--shouldn't the enemies work together? At least some of the time? Like of course the Alonne Knights are going to layer their defenses with rush down and archery, they are the professional standing army of a king whose fortress you are invading. Of course the Shrine priestesses are going to sic the bleedy bois on you and spam magic attacks, their job is to keep the undead in the Crypt at peace and your job is to storm the Crypt and kill the King of Drangleic. Do you expect to just waltz in there with no opposition, in a Souls game?

The players never complain when they are allowed to play smartly to overcome their enemies. Nobody complains about the Balista strat in Pursuer, or that spiders in Tseldora or darkdwellers in Wharf are afraid of torches. But if manikins choose to ambush you from behind as you blunder around the earthen peak, everybody loses their mind.

Never played Dark Souls, considering buying 2 as it’s the cheapest.

I was scrolling through the Summer Sale on my PS4 when I noticed that both 2 and 3 were on sale, with 2 being the cheapest. I always wanted to get into the series, but I'm wondering if 2 would be a recommended first entry into the series compared to the other titles.

    I did all the achievements

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 06:13 AM PDT

After i got Dark Souls II on Xbox 360 (no dlc sadly) after playing it for 1 whole month, 6 hours a day, i finally got gud and got every achievement in the game a few hours ago. I am filled with joy because this is one of the things i feel really proud of the other being getting all achievements in ds1.

I made 5 characters in total:

    A tank wielding Santiers spear

A mage for getting all sorcery

A Cleric/Faith build where i did most character questlines

A hexer/pyromancer to get all pyromancies and hexes

    And a Strength build

This is honestly a bit better than ds1 mainly because of all the fun gimmicky bosses you have to puzzle through.

And my final thoughts is that i really love this game and i dont think it deserves some of the hate.

I have: completed the game multiple times, all achievements, knowledge of everything about, and defended it for years...but Frozen Eleum Loyce on NG++ SUCKS

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 10:23 PM PDT

I'm just trying to get the damn knights so that I can kill Ivory King and give my Loyce Souls to Alsanna, but it's been long enough that I can't remember the area completely. I suppose that's a testament to how intricately designed the DLC areas are, but damn is it frustrating to be dying over and over again. And really, it's just because the damage is so high in NG++. It's really hard to not take damage and when you have just two of those Ice Rapier hollows...it's a nightmare. The ones with crystals on their backs to prevent backstabs are even worse. I hate these guys more than the reindeer. The attacks are really hard to dodge, and I feel like there's some justifiable hitbox complaint to be made about them. They hit you even when you roll behind, because their backswing is so huge.

I died in so many ways other than the Ice Rapier, though. Hexer Nicholai got me once by making me fat roll and hitting me with a lightning spear milliseconds before I could get behind a pillar. Forlorn got me twice, once because I missed the timing on a double Estus chug and then once by just trapping me in a 4 hit combo that wiped out all of my health. I thought I was a master at this game, but you can never take Dark Souls lightly.

Finished DS2 base game for the first time.

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 07:12 AM PDT

I somewhat enjoyed it in certain parts and absolutely despised it in others. Overall not a bad game but it felt way more tedious than the other titles and felt it went on for way longer than it should have. Some things were just outright dumb (looking at you flammable windmill). And almost all of the bosses were way too easy aside from Smelter Demon who kinda gave me a rough time. Would have really enjoyed the bosses more if they focused on quality rather than quantity. Enemy variety was also slightly underwhelming and the ADP stat was annoying at first, but got better once I put more souls into it. Not as bad as people say it is, gonna give it a 6.8/10. Good game, but not great.

    Edit: Typo

Problem with switching saves between computers

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 12:50 PM PDT

Hi! So i'm having a bit of a problem, during lockdown in my country i've been playing to ds2 on my laptop, and as lockdown's over i am currently at my gf's place, and wanted to move my laptop save to her desktop pc.

However, when i paste my save into her DarksoulsII/{randomnumbers}/ and try to load it, the game says that the save data wasn't loaded correctly.

I found a guide on this subreddit for corrupted saves, but it didnt work for mine (and also it's not corrupted, just was e-mailed to contunue it on another computer) i also e-mailed the save a 2nd time, but it still didnt work.

Does anyone have an idea why that happens?

    Thanks!!

I know there's already a thousand posts that say "i don't understand why people hate this game", but seriously, i just defeated Dragonrider (took 3 attempts, the fucker kept throwing me off the platform) and i absolutely love the game. It honestly doesn't feel clunky, just slow and more tactical (coming from a ds3 player). I also just discovered the backstab animations and they're sooo good, wish they kept them for ds3. I'm also figuring out how ADP works and it feels really good to be inexperienced again. I'm really looking forward to the dlcs since people say it's the best part

So basically I've recently beat DS2 base game for the first time (going to do the DLC next weekend.) and I feel I'd like to give the game one more chance after I'm done. I never really enjoyed it as much as the others and one of the reasons may be that I don't ever switch up builds. In every DS game so far I've focused on STR/VIT builds with swords and shields. Any suggestions and tips for trying out other builds, maybe Hexer or Sorceror for a change. It would be helpful to know which stats to focus on early game and maybe which spells or hexes to get a hold of asap. Thanks
