    Dark Souls Peculiar Doll Theory

    Peculiar Doll Theory

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 12:12 PM PST

This 3 part theory revolves around the Peculiar Doll... How and why it arrived in our cell...

I'll try to answer several questions such as:

    - Who is the dead man with the Peculiar Doll in our cell? How and why he got there?

    - Why the giant Crow also goes from Firelink Shrine (Lordran) to the Undead Asylum? Why it's a rare event?

    - What's the connection between Velka and the giant Crow? What does Velka want?

    - Why there are Black Knights at the Undead Asylum upon our return?

    Disclaimer:

This is an updated version of my previously written theory

If you don't agree with something please feel free to comment below with the necessary justifications since I enjoy learning new lore aspects!

It's a long theory so if you are interested but you don't want to read the full thing you can only read part 1 to get the gist of it!

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Peculiar Doll (1/3)

It all starts with a fairly hidden dialogue of the Crestfallen...

Once the elevator shortcut that connects Firelink Shrine to the Undead Church is unlocked, the Crestfallen could tell us something very interesting:

You again? There's nothing to speak about, really. Oh, actually... Something strange did happen. That crow flew off with somebody in its clutches. I think it was a man curled up in a ball. Stranger things have happened, right? No, maybe not...

He tells us that something strange happened. The Crow flew off with someone in its claws, probably a man curled up like a ball...

Then he tells us something really important: "Stranger things have happened, right?" and proceeds to answer himself "No, maybe not ..."

This hidden dialogue is obviously a gameplay clue that makes us realize that it's possible to re-use the Crow somehow, but we can also understand that it's VERY STRANGE that the Crow brings someone OUT of Firelink Shrine!

The Crestfallen, who remains always at Firelink Shrine, in the vicinity of the Crow (until he becomes hollow), sees the Crow as a "one-way flight"...

For the Crestfallen there are no other routes of the Crow beyond: Undead Asylum => Lordran.

In support of this first part there are other dialogues of the Crestfallen...

There are two very similar dialogues for when you manage to free Griggs or Laurentius that end like this:

... Unexpected, but I suppose stranger things have happened.

Without subsequently self responding with a denial as before!

The Crestfallen is able to distinguish strange things from very strange things!

At our first meeting with the Crestfallen at some point he tells us:

... You'd have done better to rot in the Undead Asylum ... But, too late now...

According to him it's too late because WE CAN'T RETURN BACK, we can't re-use the Crow in order to return to the Undead Asylum!

    CONCLUSION (1/3):

The fact that the Crow brings someone OUT of Firelink Shrine is certainly a VERY RARE EVENT!

Now it's possible to make an association between the alleged man carried by the Crow and the man with the Peculiar Doll in our cell!

    We need few things:

    1. the alleged man has the Peculiar Doll with him
    2. the Crow transports the alleged man to the Undead Asylum
    3. the alleged man goes in our cell
    4. a reason for all of this

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Peculiar Doll (2/3)

Let's concentrate on the possible IDENTITY of the alleged man carried away by the Crow...

I divided this second part in 3 points.

    • POINT 1: the nest

The Crow's nest is initially unreachable, both because Firelink Shrine is in ruins and because at first the elevator to the Undead Church is broken so nobody can use the alternative route to reach the nest.

However, all those who reach the nest could interact with the Crow. In fact we know that to interact with the Crow it's not enough to just reach its nest, we must also make a very special gesture...

So not only the nest was finally reached by someone but that someone also managed to communicate and effectively interact with the Crow!

    • POINT 2: curl up like a ball

Let's concentrate on the command used to communicate with the Crow: "Curl up like a ball".

This gesture clearly simulates one of the eggs at the nest. Crows are very intelligent animals, obviously they can distinguish real eggs from simple imitations. However, after few seconds the Crow picks us up and carries us to the Undead Asylum.

There are some subtle but important differences between the old and new cutscenes with the Crow:

    - In the new cutscenes we are transported always curled up like a ball (simulating an egg), while in the old one the Crow holds us only by the arms, letting us dangle out of its claws

    - As soon as we return to the Undead Asylum we notice that the Crow has created a nest on the peak where it leaves us (which allows us to go back)

These subtle differences could suggest the fact that the Crow initially sees us as "one of many Chosen Undead", in fact it takes us from the Undead Asylum in a violent manner, without too much care (it's kind of a jumpscare). While subsequently it sees us as something more precious... We are treated like an egg, so it carries us with more care and no longer leaves us on the ground but on its nest.

In short, the Crow treats us like one of its children... Clearly the same could be said for the alleged man who left before us...

    - observation:

It makes sense that the Crow take us from the Undead Asylum to Lordran (does it?), but why should it also do the reverse path? Why the Crow does also Lordran => Unded Asylum?

Possible answer in "Peculiar Doll (3/3)"...

    • POINT 3: Velka

Let's introduce Velka, the Goddess of Sin.

I will talk about her relationship with the Crow in "Peculiar Doll (3/3)"... For now let's assume that the Crow is bound to Velka in some way and therefore acts according to her will.

It's important to notice two things about the alleged man sighted by the Crestfallen:

    • He knows the gesture to make in order to interact with the Crow
    • He flies away with the Crow as soon as the nest becomes reachable, as if he was waiting for nothing else!

Can you imagine someone randomly crouching in a giant crow's nest, as soon as it's reachable? I can't, there needs to be a good reason for it...

So the man did everything consciously and probably was aware of what was going to happen!

If we assume that Velka is linked to the Crow and we know that even the alleged man is linked to the Crow, then for the transitive property (Velka-Crow & Man-Crow => Velka-Man) the man is connected to Velka!

The relationship between the alleged man and Velka can be of 2 types:

    • he is one of her disciple (probably of lower rank than Oswald)
    • he is a sinner

In the description of Velka's miracle, "Karmic Justice", it is said that "for each sin there is a punishment, and it is the task of Goddess Velka to define the sin, and mete out the punishment".

Velka is the one who DEFINE sin.

This makes Velka "super partes", she can even decide to punish sinful gods

Since the new corpse in our cell (that corpse isn't there at the beginning of the game and it isn't dressed like the one that Oscar throws down) from which we retrieve the Peculiar Doll isn't wearing any equipment (it's a normal corpse) it's reasonable to assume that the man was a sinner used by Velka for a very special "atonement mission"...

How can a miserable man get hold of one of the most feared and important objects in Lordran, a key to the safe of the gods? And why he decided to "use" the Crow?

It is all according to Velka's plot, it is literally the only reasonable explanation for all of this...

(if you have other ideas please share it with justifications)

    CONCLUSION (2/3):

Somehow Velka let the man take the Peculiar Doll and ordered him to fly with her Crow to the Undead Asylum.

Why Velka want all of this?

Why the man with the doll died in our cell?

Why there are 2 Black Knights at the Undead Asylum?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Peculiar Doll (3/3)

Now I'll try to answer the questions left pending in the previous parts:

    ____VELKA <-> CROW____

Let's start from the most important question, the one that keeps the whole second part standing, that is the connection between the Crow and Velka...

These are the possible well known proofs of their connection:

    1. The "Pardoners" serving Velka wear a crow-like set. The whole set is black and the "Mask of Velka" that is said to "symbolize separation from worldly desires" has a sort of beak.
    2. The "Crow Demons" in the Painted World of Ariamis were originally designed as "worshipers of the Goddess Velka whose bodies were deformed by their devotion" (Miyazaki)
    3. In the Painted World of Ariamis there are many objects related to Velka and it's the area with the most crows in the game (if not the only one but I'm not sure). They are everywhere in this area...

Now let's underline the important things of the Crow:

    - It's gigantic compared to normal crows

    - It's a unique creature within the game

    - You can't kill it. Even with the highest damage output build of the game you can't one-shot it. If its HP falls below a threshold (even below 0) it simply flies away (this point is mainly for gameplay reasons, in order to prevent you from throwing away the possibility to return to the Asylum, but still it's not killable which may be peculiar for lore reasons since in DS generally there are ALWAYS repercussions if you kill an NPC).

Furthermore the Crow has one of the most important task in the game!

It makes the pilgrimage to Lordran for us! We do not make any pilgrimage!

When Oscar tells us the legend of the Chosen Undead he doesn't mention the Crow. If there is a giant crow that helps you out with the pilgrimage he should mention it, but it seems he doesn't know anything about the Crow:

"Thou who art Undead, art chosen... In thine exodus from the Undead Asylum, maketh pilgrimage to the land of Ancient Lords..."

There is no Crow in the legend of the Chosen Undead told by Oscar!

We don't know how Oscar arrived to the Undead Asylum but if he took the Crow he probably would have told us about it... Moreover the initial dialogue of Crestfallen seems to confirm that Oscar didn't take the Crow from Firelink Shrine!

A possible explanation is that Oscar physically made the pilgrimage himself to Lordran and once he realized that he couldn't complete the legend, he gave up and went back still by himself to the Asylum to assist another undead!

Without the Crow the pilgrimage would take too long, the attempts to realize the legend (or to do something else...) would take to much time, and time is something that can't be wasted in those circumstances...

And if the Crow takes the Chosen Undead to Lordran it means that it was certainly trained by someone! Who instructed the Crow?

I can go on forever but I hope you get that the Crow is a lot more than a simple "huge crow".

That said we can affirm with certainty that the Crow is definitely a special entity and from Miyazaki's interview we can hypothesize that the Crow is an advanced stage of the Crow Demons. Maybe he/she was the most devoted among the worshipers of Velka, a "Champion of Velka"...

    ____FIRELINK SHRINE ---> UNDEAD ASYLUM____

The Crow get us from the Asylum to Firelink Shrine, but why should it do the opposite route?

If you think about it, it's curious how we can make a parallel between the beginning of the game and when we return to the Asylum... We do the exact same main actions only backwards...

    GAME START:

    1. recover the key in cell
    2. defeat the boss (trap)
    3. leave with the crow

    RETURN TO THE ASYLUM:

    1. arrive with the crow
    2. defeat the boss (trap)
    3. retrieve the doll in the cell

Also in both cases we are catapulted into the bossfight without a warning (they are both traps).

It's like a NEW MIRRORED BEGINNING, only that the key we get upon our return is not linked to the "legend of the Chosen Undead" (created by the gods) but concerns something much more obscure and hidden, something that goes against the will of the gods...

In fact, the doll is the key to the Painted World of Ariamis, a place where there are probably 2 of the most feared objects by the gods: the "Dark Ember" and the "Lifehunt Schyte" of Priscilla (and Priscilla herself)... And many more forbidden objects mainly related to Velka...

The gods used the Painted World of Ariamis as a sort of safe, to hide everything that could compromise their reign!

So the second time you return to Lordran (from the Asylum) there are 2 big differences:

    1. The crow treats you like a child (with more care)
    2. You have the doll, so you are thinking where to use it, you are curios to uncover its secrets. While probably you already forgot about the Big Pilgrim's key

It feels like a new beginning, with a new key and a new goal...

    - observation:

The "canon way" to recover the doll is in the order I wrote above, the chosen undead should fall into the trap, defeat the boss and then recover the doll.

    ____BLACK KNIGHT AT THE ASYLUM____

The Black Knights long ago fought against the chaos demons, then many followed Gwyn to the "Kiln of the First Flame" and were incinerated by the explosion that resulted from Gwyn's sacrifice to the First Flame. Now they "wander the world like disembodied spirits" (Set of Black Knights).

Why do we meet the Black Knights at the Asylum? There are 2 possible explanations...

I'll start with the less plausible:

    • Explanation number 1 (less plausible):

    Try to answer these questions...

    - What's the purpose of having 2 demons at the Asylum? Why not just one? After all, to be the "Chosen Undead" and make pilgrimage to Lordran you have to defeat only one...

    - Why the demon with the catalyst (unreachable at the beginning) seems almost imprisoned, wandering back and forth in is "cell"?

It's a prison for the undead after all... A prison made to "elect" the possible true Chosen Undead...

Not every chosen undead is the TRUE Chosen Undead, the one that realizes the legend reviving the First Flame, in fact many are failures. Among those very few undead that are able to defeat the Asylum Demon there is still a very low probability that one of them realizes the legend...

So it's reasonable to have another demon to immediately replace the defeated one at the Asylum...

And who is more capable to manage chaos demon if not the Black Knights!

I know that this is pure speculation but it's not so senseless...

Black knights are now wandering spirits so it isn't difficult for them to get to the Undead Asylum (a really isolated place). They fought against demons even worse than the Asylum Demon (a minor demon) and they are still servants of the Gods.

The fact that we slay the Asylum Demon and there needs to be a replacement for it can make sense.

    Imagine this...

We kill the Asylum Demon, we get to Lordran but then we fail miserably, we don't manage to get to Gwyn... The legend must continue it can't die with us, so there needs to be another Asylum Demon to challenge the undead at the main entrance of the Asylum, and that another one can't simply appear there, it needs to be brought there and the Black Knights are there for this specific reason!

    • Explanation number 2 (more plausible):

The information of the Peculiar Doll being at the Asylum has been leaked. The Black Knights are at the Asylum to interfere with Velkas machinations!

    Think about this...

You are Velka, Goddess of Sin. You can DEFINE sin, you have an ABSOLUTE take on what is sin. So you can decide that Gwyns attempt to extend the Age of Fire, condemning the human race, is in fact a sin.

The Age of Fire needs to end and the gods must be punished!

Lordran is the gods domain, so you decide to start your punishment plan in the domain of humans, at the Asylum. The humans are in fact the ones that CAN (through the power of the Dark Soul) and need to realize this punishment...

    • Explanaiton number 3 (hybrid):

    A mixture of both 1 and 2.

The Black Knights were at the Asylum to manage the second demon and they decided to take care of the peculiar doll first since it's a far greater problem.

    CONCLUSION (3/3):

Either way while the Black Knights were at the Asylum they have spotted and killed the sinner with the doll sent by Velka. Recognizing the doll, once used by their Lords to hide anything that went against their will, as an extremely dangerous object of great importance.

That's why they are guarding the doll at our cell, to prevent that someone takes it and uses it to get into the "safe of the gods" and execute Velka's punishment with the numerous forbidden objects inside the Painted world...

    - observation:

The corpse with the peculiar doll is in OUR cell. This can be pure coincidence but since the man flew with the Crow as soon as WE unlocked the elevator it can also be a message for us. WE are to one that proved to be a worthy Chosen Undead and so WE can be the one to execute Velka's punishment

    p.s.

Sorry for the not so great English, hope it was understandable...

The time has come for me to finally make my sorcerer

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:55 AM PST

For the last few weeks i have been working on getting all of the trophies (along with playing the game for the first time) and finally I have them all except one. I need to collect all of the sorceries. I am garbage at spells. I suck at spells in all 3 (never played Demons Souls) games. What should I work towards first? Can I make a beefy/dex caster? Should I make a beefy/dex caster? I am lost and don't know what to do with this character. Anybody have any good tips on a decent caster that will make me hate this playthrough a little less?

Edit: Would an int infused dex weapon work like a dagger or maybe falchion?

A short tale of friendship and loss

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 04:58 PM PST

His name was Asshole. I'd met Asshole in the Undead Burg when I was level 11, and immediately learned his name the second he stabbed that giant sword straight through my chest. We've had a few fun romps here and there, with me stabbing him in the back sometimes before he dislocated my head from my body. It was a fun relationship, as every time I passed by, I'd always say "Hey, Asshole!" And he'd just stand there facing away and pretending he didn't hear me.

Our times together may have been short, but I genuinely appreciated the way he stabbed me like he meant it, as opposed to some of the other Undead that just seemed like they did it out of principal. We may not have been BEST friends, but Asshole was the closest I've ever had to a true friend in Dark Souls.

Fast forward to a few hours ago, when I got a Sorcerer's Catalyst and decided to learn some magic. I picked up the Soul Arrow spell and had just enough Intelligence to wield both the spell and the staff! Naturally, since every time I got a new piece of gear I wanted to try out, I waltzed on over to Asshole and initiated a friendly backstab to get him out into the sunlight.

Now, here's the part I truly regret. I know Asshole can't climb ladders. I don't know why; maybe he's just scared of heights, or maybe he's worried about all the germs from the Hollows that have touched that ladder before, or something else. But I decided it'd be funny to dash up the ladder and bonk him with some Soul Arrows from out of reach. At first, I couldn't aim, because he was really good at walking just out of the impact zone, but when I landed a hit on him, it was so funny I kept going, bombarding him with little blue Soul Arrows.

    And then, something horrific happened.

    Asshole's HP hit zero.

Words cannot describe the sheer pain, heartbreak, and despair that overwhelmed me. I screamed for him. I wept. I tried to jump down, to hold him as he passed, but his body faded before my very eyes. All that was left was a twinkling little light and a prompt to "pick up item."

A Titanite Chunk and a Black Knight Shield were all that remained of Asshole. Through my tears, I accepted these items. I will carry them for as long as I play, and no other Undead will lay their grubby, unworthy fingers on Asshole's shield.

I will beat this cursed game. For Asshole.

May he find peace in the glory of the Sun, if it so shines on his soul.

Anyone playing now for the first time?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 01:53 AM PST

Just started after beating demon's souls on the ps5. Never played the souls series before and I fell in love. Currently playing through dark souls in the undead parish. I already feel like this game will be a lot more challenging lol (although the mindflayers really fucked me up for a while in demon's souls)! Planning to play through dark souls 1,2, and 3, blood borne, and sekiro! So stoked to find such an awesome series I've never experienced before. Wishing good vibes to anyone else playing now! Are the stories related at all? They give a similar vibe as far as I can tell but I don't see a direct relation between them at the moment.

Also heads up that dark souls remastered and dark souls 3 have some pretty good sales prices on ps4/5 currently.

(Spoiler) Finished my first a couple days ago and had a blast. Wanted to talk about it

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 09:58 PM PST

I finally checked out the Souls series by giving DSR a shot and it was great. I wanted to write about my favorite moments/flexes/failures.

    • Spent a long time trying to beat Tauros Demon "properly" until I caved in and killed it with multiple jump strikes. This guy and the Anor Londo tianite demon killed me more than anyone else
    • It took me a really long time to figure out how to aim arrows. It turned out arrows don't fit in crossbows, and that crossbows can't aim anyway
    • I didn't recognize Solaire from behind so I walked up really slowly with my shield
    • I practiced parrying when I entered Undead Parish and got pretty good at it and felt like a cool guy. Then the first time I ran into a cape enemy it parried me and I died in one hit and didn't feel as cool any more.
    • Thought the Bell Gargoyles were super fun. It was a great moment when the second health bar appeared
    • Beat the Gaping Dragon on my first try since I was always sprinting around and trying to get behind it. Shout outs to whoever wrote "try tail" at the fog gate.
    • Blighttown's village area was one of my favorite areas to get through. Although I didn't notice the ladders so I'd just jump from safe-looking ledges, and managed to find loot that way. I found its bonfire when I got Toxic'd and then ran away from the battle and luckily right into the bonfire
    • Beat Queelag while still poisoned from the swamp. I didn't find the rusted iron ring, and didn't want to use a moss clump or wait for the poison to run out every time I tried the fight. My brother would let me know when my health was getting low since it was hard me to keep track of that while fighting.
    • Killed the parasite guy in the Daughter of Chaos room as soon as I came within range of him. Didn't realize he was special until he was talking after getting aggro'd
    • Had a lot of fun in Sen's Fortress once I got good at parrying the snake guys.
    • Sprinted past the Anor Londo snipers on my first try. Just barely actually killed them on my first try
    • Had a lot of fun fighting Lautrec, beat him in two tries after figuring out my strategy. I'd keep sprinting and run in to hit the caster, then keep sprinting and backstab the lance guy repeatedly, then beat Lautrc by parrying. Immediately used the fire keeper soul to reinforce since I didn't know better
    • Tried fighting O&S by being careful, hanging back, and separating them. After 5-10 tries I'd only get Ornstein to half health so I decided fight them "like a man" and be in their faces since I realized my +5 silver knight shield could block almost everything they did. Managed to beat them in 5-10 tries like this, and it was the most fun I had on my run
    • Laughed really hard at "Amazing Chest Ahead" after O&S
    • Had to look up where to go after Gynevere :/
    • Beat Solaire in Demon Ruins really savagely since I could parry him, I felt kind of bad.
    • I understand why you guys hate Bed of Chaos. I actually didn't mind it myself, but it was boring getting through all the fire breathers every time because they were slow and not interesting to fight
    • I didn't realize what the skull lantern did for a while since I was wearing the sunlight maggot the whole time I was in the tomb of the giants
    • Beat all giant and four legged skeletons in Tomb of the Giants by hitting them once with Dragon Tooth from outside their aggro range. Really struggled before I figured that out. Nito after that was pretty fun
    • Got freaked out in New Londo when I followed a path marked with "Amazing Chest Ahead." I went really slowly with my shield up and then found the very large ember
    • Found out after the Four Kings fog gate that I needed to go get the Covenant of Artorias
    • Freaked out when I ran into Havel from behind, since he beat me in one hit early on. Managed to get my revenge with backstabs
    • Beat Sif on my first try by just standing under him
    • Beat Four Kings on my first try in the most sloppy way ever. Got hit a bunch but I had 10 Estus flasks and did pretty decent damage to them.
    • Spent forever beating the boars in front of Duke's Archives. Definitely didn't figure out the proper way to beat them.
    • Thought the Duke's Archives as really fun
    • I went into the unwinnable Seath fight twice since I though maybe he wouldn't be there. Got my revenge in Crystal Cave by beating him in one try, I could just stay close and block everything
    • Looked up what to do before wrapping up the game. Painted World was really fun (especially the crowd of blob guys with shields and spears), Ash Lake was cool too.
    • Did the DLC. Felt cool because I almost beat Artorias on my first try (again, blocking is OP), but after I died I casually walked off a cliff trying to get to him. Right at the first bridge as you exit the sanctuary. Won on the second try
    • Manus was pretty disappointing since my shield was so good
    • Kiln was my favorite looking place in the game.
    • Parried Gwyn and smacked him with Dragon Tooth +4 a lot to beat him. The sad music got me thinking "Am I supposed to be sad now? Wait, what am I even doing? Why am I killing this old dude? Just because someone with an amazing chest told me to?" It was an awkward moment.

    Other fun facts:

    • I picked my clothes because I thought they looked cool, this outfit was under 1/4 of my carry weight since I had Havel's ring, divine favor and protection ring, and levelled Endurance a bunch. Occasionally had Dragon Tooth as my second weapon and wore Havel's chestplate for a "under 1/2 capacity" setup
    • I forgot to use Humanity and just sold it to Frampt at the end
    • Levelled up everything except magic stats in early game but after that mostly just levelled my damage stats and Endurance since I figured that getting hit was optional. Ended up working alright by making fights shorter. My stats before Kiln
    • God of War (the Norse one) was among my favorite games before I played this but now it seems lame. This game is among my favorites now

Looking forward to playing the rest of the series, or maybe play this one again but with shortcuts and a worse shield.

TLDR: parrying is really great and Silver Knight Shield +5 is op

My Epic Showdown with Ornstein on NG +

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 10:36 PM PST

So for a little bit of context I have already platinumed both Sekiro and Bloodborne before even playing a Dark Souls game. Which is relevant because Ornstein provided me with the most butthole clenching, epic, test of mettle I've ever received from a boss fight.

So on about my 6th or 7th try I found myself familiar with a slightly more aggressive Ornstein and Smough on NG+. To the point that I got pretty good at wearing down Smough while avoiding MOST of Ornstein's rapid stabby stabs. Smough finally goes down and I find myself face-to-face with a giant, pissed-off, Ornstein with only 7 Estus Flasks to spare. I was also using Grant, which ended up being the game-changer that won this fight by the skin of my teeth.

Ornstein was at about a quarter health left when I had consumed my last Estus Flask and I had pretty much accepted defeat at that point but still chose to fight to the bitter end. I get him down to an eighth by staying glued to his ass and always doubling back when he copy and pastes Smough's signature ass smash move. Ornstein eventually gets me with his grab attack and brings me down to a quarter health; One more hit and I'm done. However, I was playing a Paladin build and I had the Great Heal Excerpt miracle handy, so all I had to do was to get to a spot where I could heal and finish him off. I manage to lock Ornstein behind a pillar for long enough to heal and he missed me with a stab attack by an inch in the process. It now came down to who would outlast the other. Paying tribute to Paladin Leeroy and the legendary Mr. Jenkins, I bum rush Ornstein with Grant in true Rohirrim style. After two hits with Grant I see Ornstein only needs one more hit before he's down, and because he hit me when I Leeroy'd him, so did I. I think Ornstein must've knew this because he geared up the lightning buttslam to finish me off, but as he jumped, I used Grant's two-hand AOE attack that clipped Ornstein on his way down and won the fight by the skin of my teeth.

I share this story because this is maybe one of the best experiences (definitely the most epic) in a game I've ever had, and if I didn't have the Dark Souls bug before, I definitely do now. Moral of the story: It's not over til it's over.

    O&S intro theme??

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 02:02 AM PST

Does anyone know the original song or name of the music that plays in Ornstein and Smough's intro? I'm learning the theme on piano and I would like to play the intro theme before the actual battle theme to make it sound grander. I'm not gifted so I can't figure out what notes are being played just by listening to it.

If you have sheet music then that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Coming back to the Moonlight Butterfly

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:48 AM PST

On my first run I accidentally thought that the Darkroot Garden was where I needed to go for the first bell, and ran into the Moonlight Butterfly. It took me like 20 tries with my unupgraded battle axe. She one-shotted me with most her attacks, so I grinded for a magic defence shield too. Eventually I beat her, but I restarted the game because I killed the purging stone saleswomen after I got cursed lmao. I just came back to beat Sif on my next playthrough, and nothing felt better than beating the stupid butterfly in two cycles with my Claymore+10.

It was truly a long and hard journey so that so many times I almost went hollow, but after finally completing the game I really got sense of pride and accomplishment(Sorry to poor doggo and spider girl for killing 3 times).

Although I feel sad to say goodbye to dark souls, I guess it's time to move on to next game in my library.

Dark souls 2... not really. I think I had enough of sad and depressing game for now 😂. I bought A Hat in Time and Stardew Valley on Christmas sale, so gonna play A Hat in Time first.

Good bye Dark Souls for great experience! Good bye Dark Souls community, and don't you dare go hollow!

    Anor Londo!!

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:32 PM PST

I did it guys!! Finally reached Anor Londo!!! This is my first time playing through DSR. I've always heard people say that Sen's Fortress is terribly hard, the worst area of the game, but honestly i didn't have that hard a time with it. Thst one thin bridge near the end, with the snake sorcerer to the side, just shot some arrows at him and crossed just fine. Killed the iron golem on my second try (he tossed me off the side the first time, caught me by suprise). I had fun going through it, felt more like I was going through a prison then a fortress, with all the traps and cages. Then again, not too much difference betwern the two if you think about it.

Anyways, I'm just excited for this next area, the view is amazingly beautiful. Wish i could upload a screenshot zzzzzz

Adding six bone wheel skeletons to the Pinwheel fight every time he teleports would make it one of the harder boss fights in the game.

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 01:12 AM PST

Just a thought I had. But thematically it would make sense for the fight and would also be a real challenge.

Will I be alright focusing on three stats?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 12:51 AM PST

Hey everyone. I'm pretty new to this game and I have a question about stats. I know generally people focus mostly on two stats such as VIT/END, STR/DEX etc. with a few extra points here and there. Well I really like having high VIT and END, but I'm also wielding the Zweihander for the first time, so if possible, I would love to also focus on STR. If I focus on all three stats, do you think I will I just end up underleveled in all three? Or is it reasonable to do this? Note that I've started the game a couple times but never got past Quelaag, so I don't know how easy leveling up is later on. Thanks!

I just beat soul level one on dark souls one

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:08 PM PST

Honestly not as hard as it sounds (at least not with pyromancy) would recommend to do this was my third playthrough of the game but I do know it pretty well by now, I broadly followed ymfah's sl1 guide on YouTube it which really helped and I would recommend it personally I didn't kill manus as I haven't killed him regularly because I really hate the dark mages and the monsters in oolacile. Overall had a lot of fun (excluding bed of chaos)

    LOVE THIS GAME

    Best stuff for late game??

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 03:43 AM PST

What do you guys think is the best stuff for late game, like a ng+ play through ya feel? I'm talking about like mostly armor and weapons. I like heavy stuff like great swords or halberds. I like black knight sword but I have all the black night weapons and they kinda like eh eventually. I don't really use spells. I have upgraded pyromancer hand to like 7 or 8 but ye if you could think about some good spells I'd appreciate that. I don't have dlc yet bc I haven't bought it so if you're gonna suggest dark beads i can't get that lol😭

What powers did the everlasting dragons have?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 11:25 PM PST

We can assume that the dragons were physically strong (just look at them) and they were nearly impenetrable due to their scales. So what other powers did they have they most likely have fire breath (most dragons have that) and Seath had a bunch of crystal powers and (maybe spoilers) Midir laser beam (not an everlasting dragon but close to one)

Dark Souls first play through update

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 10:48 AM PST

So, after i made it into the Depths I found my way into the basilisk sewers where i got blasted in the face by curse smoke. After playing DS3 where curse really isn't a big deal I was surprised to learn of its generous after effects.

The female undead merchant was selling a purging stone for 6000 souls. I spent about an hour farming souls to buy one. So i had about 12000 souls. I bought one. Yay no more curse. I go back into the sewers and get stun locked and blasted by curse smoke again. So, i thought no way im just letting those 7000 or so souls go so i carefully made my way back down, killed every basilisk basterd and searched for my souls to buy another purging stone.. except they weren't anywhere to be found.

So, i fell through the sewer again because that's where i died and i looked up at the ceiling and noticed my souls were on the ceiling in the exit to the sewer hole. So i was left cursed with 0 souls about to face the dragon. He kicked my ass. I decided to go back to the undead asylum and get a couple of purging stones from the bird dude. And now im getting my ass handed to me by the stray demon.

    And i love every second

So I recently bought all 3 ds games so would it be fine if I played all of them at the same time?(or atleast 1 and 2 at the same time)

    Posted: 17 Jan 2021 03:03 AM PST

I have ds1 on my ps4 and ds2 on my pc but I don't always have access to my ps4. I've been having lots of fun with ds1 but can only play for so much. So I thought I'd play ds2 when I cant play ds1. (No spoilers plz)

    Speedruning question

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:27 PM PST

So in a few weeks some friends and I are going to do a speedrun of darks souls race against each other. First to beat gwyn with no glitches. We are all speedrun noobs and we aren't allowed to practice (some would have more time to practice than others).

I have a question regarding strategy. I'm not good enough to utilize the RTSR strat and was wondering if it would be worth resetting for the black knight halberd. My current idea is to go for it and if I don't get it, continue the run so I don't lose time. I can get to the black knight in just about 4 minutes.

Should I reset for the halberd or just continue on?
