As the title says: a couple of months ago I finished writing this essay on my experience with Dark Souls, which I started shortly after finishing the game for the first time. Perhaps it's a little long, but I am really interested in what you guys in this community think about it.

What was your first encounter with DS (or any From Software game) like? I hear that for many people these games were helpful in battling depression...

Anyway here's a link to my essay: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_ALYxW0TaqquooBdp_jTJm7NH20XET6F/view?usp=sharing

    Praise the sun y'all!

EDIT: I wrote it having in mind a reader who might not know the first thing about videogames, so the whole thing is intentionally introductory in its flavor. EDIT 2: Wow!! My first awards ever — I'm so happy! Thank you so much!!

For anybody who never knew about this...

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 03:46 PM PST

If you speak to Ingward after killing the Four Kings, he will go to Firelink Shrine and stay there for the rest of the game. You can find him near where Petrus usually is, on the side of Firelink where the slope up to the Undead Burg starts.

I had figured this was common knowledge, but recent discussions with friends has revealed that many of them believe that Ingward will only ever stay in New Londo, so I thought it was worth pointing out if anybody here never knew about it.

    SOLAIRE SQUAD FTW

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:43 AM PST

First playthrough, I haven't summoned phantoms ever (due to trauma of getting ganked by a group of overleveled scrubs at the end of the sewer tunnel at undead burg), and talked to Solaire and he offered to be summoned. So I became human and I summoned "KnightSolaire".

I thought that was really Solaire because I don't know what he was supposed to look like and he started doing gestures like praise the sun, so I assumed nothing was wrong.

Then he went ham and basically began to speedrun Anor Londo. I was in awe, badass super Solaire taking out Silver knights left and right and I could barely keep up. I read about how Solaire generally had two modes: tanky and competent, but this Solaire revealed a hidden room, picked out the mimics, opened all the chests for me, and even bashed in some big guys before Ornstein and Smoug.

To top it all off, I found another summon for Solaire and that's how I knew the first was a fake and this summon was the real one. "KnightSolaire" literally made my week.

hell yeah 3 v 2 and we rekt oresten n smaug ez dark souls game.

p.s. Fuck the stupid spammy, heat seaking, shield-holding, wall-clipping, camp setting, high-ground having, double teaming, silver knight archer nerds. Bad game design 0/10.

Beating Ornstein and Smough changed the game for me. (in a good way)

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:07 AM PST

A bit of a background first. I had heard about Dark Souls for quite some time but I never reall picked it up because I am more of a casual gamer and was never really good with difficult games (I used to play Skyrim on Novice difficulty). But after seeing so many people on the internet praise it and after coaxing from some of my friends, I finally decided to play the remaster in 2018. I normally take my time in playing RPGs and usually play around 6-7 hours per week.

It took me more than a month to reach Blighttown, which is where I faced my first wall. The poison was least of my worries (I had a shit ton of purple mosses). The thing that frustrated me the most was gravity. It became so annoying that I gave up and didn't play it for a couple months (also because of some irl stuff). During the holidays I picked it up again and this time braved through Blighttown and even Quelaag on my second try.

But soon after, I reached my second wall, and this would be a gigantic wall. Ornstein and Smough. I had heard of them and it was generally said that O&S was the one of the hardest bosses in the game. I thought if I could brave through Blighttown and Sen's Fortress, this one boss shouldn't be much difficult. Oh how wrong I was. I tried different tactics. Tried changing my gear, summons and what not. I couldn't beat them at all. I died to them a lot. A. LOT. So much that I gave up. And I gave up hard.

Fast forward to December 2020 (almost two years after I stopped playing DS). In the holidays, I decided to start a new playthrouugh of DS. Give it another shot. This time I rolled a cleric. And surprisingly breezed through most of the first act. This time I knew what to expect from each area and thus I died far less. I beat every single boss on my first try. I traversed through Blighttown with only a couple of deaths and I beat Sen's Fortress on my first try. And finally reached Ornstein and Smough.

I was nervous. This was the challenge which I could not overcome. The only thing that stopped me the last time. This run had been much better than my first playthrough. But that didn't change the fact that I had never beaten O&S before. Since I was a cleric (Sunbro covenant) I try to summon Solaire wherever possible, but before summoning Solaire I needed to clear the giant sentinels in front of the fog. I spent two days trying to figure out how to beat the sentinels without using any estus. Even after perfecting them, I was still super nervous before entering the fog. I was shaking. Literally. I was genuinely struggling to even press the buttons on my controller. I summoned Solaire and went through the fog.

I had a very simple plan. Let Solaire distract Ornstein. I will go after Smough and pelt him with Lightning Spear (the miracle not the weapon). I knew that mega Ornstein is harder than Mega Smough, but I just wanted to end the first phase as fast as possible and for me Smough in the first phase was easier to kill then Ornstein. The plan was going really well. Solaire was doing an excellent job of keeping Ornstein away from me while I continued to throw lightning spears at Smough (each dealing around 10% damage to his health). I missed a couple of spears, but for the most part it was fine. After exhausting all my spells, I went after him with my Divine Zweihander. I was not paying attention to Ornstein's health bar and just as I was about to finish Smough, I saw that Solaire had killed Ornstein (never knew Solaire was strong enough to 1v1 Ornstein). The cutscene played and Smough was back at full health. He killed Solaire in one hit (who was hanging on with a sliver of health). Now it was me vs Smough. I had used up all my spells and half my estus. What followed was a standard 1v1 boss battle. I hit a couple times, rolled away, dodged his charges and slams. Same old same old. It wasn't until a bit later that I realised that I was doing surprisingly well. Smough was at 25% health and I still had 4 estus. Finally I saw hope. I continued my struggle and eventually I landed my final blow.

    It was over.

I had finally managed to beat the enemy that had made me quit the game. I had finally beat Ornstein and Smough. That too on my first try! I placed my controller down and just sat there for a minute. After that I got the Lordvessel and am currently going through the catacombs. I don't think any game can recreate the feeling I got after beating them.

    I fucking love Dark Souls.

tl;dr: Just trynna brag how I beat O&S on my first try.

A little lore theory about the iron golem.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 09:39 AM PST

The iron golem is a boss without lore, which I think perfectly intentional. My theory is that the Iron golem we defeat is not the same one Tarkus defeated. Each time a chosen undead kills a golem, a new one is created by Gwyndolin. I base this theory on two elements. First, the name of his soul is "core of AN iron golem" which infer that the golem is not unique. And we know that it's just metal infused with souls. The second is Iron golem death animation. I don't remember his death animation in the original but in the remastered, his disapearing effect looks like the one of silver knights and royal gards. Illusion created with the power of souls. We can't know for sure if It's Gwyndolin who creates new iron golem, but I don't see any other characters. Sen maybe? We don't know if he/she is dead. Concerning Solaire and Siegmeyer, I think they just followed us before Gwyndolin could craft a new Iron golem.

Question - How would I go about maximizing my damage with a bow build?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:11 PM PST

I'm doing a themed run with friends, and I'm the archer of the group. Trying to figure out just how high I can pump my damage.

    I'm planning...

Composite Bow +15 40/40 STR/DEX Red Tearstone Ring Leo Ring Heavy Arrows

Look good? Any way I could pump it higher?

    My first encounter with Solaire

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 04:14 PM PST

My first time through Dark Souls was 100% blind. I had heard it was difficult but rewarding and I knew that there was a dude with a sun on his chest.

When I found the sun chested dude staring into the sun.. like you do. I was excited to chat and see what all the love for this character was about.

He tells me that he is "Solaire of Astora, an adherent to the Lord of Sunlight" and that he wants to join in "jolly co-operation!" in the friendliest possible tone, full of optimism. I agree and was excited to have a friend in this harsh world.

    But then ...

He tells me "The sun is a wondrous body. Like a magnificent father! If only I could be so grossly incandescent!".

I just wanted to be his friend, but I miss interpreted what he was saying as literal. So I though. I know how to make fire ... maybe he wants fire. He got mad, we weren't friends, and I immediately started a new save. I didn't know I could hurt him or that he could hate me, but I couldn't take him being upset or the unthinkable of killing him.

I have saved him every play through since ... Except the first time I found him hollow when I didn't know his fate or that I played a hand. Then I looked up how to save him and saved him every time since that.

I have a similar story surrounding Siegmeyer ... but that one wasn't my fault. The silver knights made me use WoTG in that small room.. I panicked.

I know I could have atoned for my sins but I would have always know.

    Manus

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 02:15 AM PST

So I beat Manus it took about 20 or so attempts but we both died at the exact same time because of his soul storm spell and I don't really feel like I beat him. Has this happened to any of you and is there an easy way to fight the boss again without going through the entire game.

There are 15 screenshots in total, all of which where taken during my first time going through the game. This game has definitely been a ride, and I will 100% play through it again sometime soon to discover all of the hidden stuff I haven't discovered yet. Definitely in my top games of all time list!

    Question on Dark Souls remastered

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:34 PM PST

Hello all, I was recently going to buy dark souls remastered at a local game store because I was pretty hyped for demon souls remake. I have played Dark souls 1 before and wasn't very good at it because I was pretty young and didn't quite understand the mechanics (I was quite dumb lol). Anyway, I have since then played dark souls 3/ blood borne and did pretty well on those (yes, I do know they easier than DS1, but I digress). So, I was about to buy DS1 remastered and the store clerk dissuades me from buying it. He said that "they changed the story and a lot of other elements of the game." I ended up putting it back and that was that. I'm curious to hear from a Dark Souls vet if this is true or not; I want the best experience possible.

    Faith Weapons

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:54 PM PST

What are the best faith based weapons in your opinion? The weapon I want to use Dragonslayer Spear will end up splitting my stats pretty evenly at 30 Strength, 25 Dex, and 30 Faith for the spells I will be getting. I want to get rid of the high dex requirement and focus on the other two stats. What weapon would you recommend late-game assuming it's at +5 Magic (Or whatever scales with faith).

Currently rolling with Astora's Straight Sword but I hear it won't keep up later in the game.

Here is my paper on the music of the Dark Souls series!

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:14 PM PST

Hey everyone, as promised, here is my paper.

Now, I must preface this by saying that this is version of my paper that I turned in last month for a grade (passed with flying colors in case you're wondering). What this means is that for the sake of conciseness, I did not include anything about Dark Souls 2. But worry not, Bearers of the Curse. I am updating this paper with DS2 analysis and information soon, with the help of a buddy who is admittedly much more informed about the music and lore of DS2 than I am. I just wanted share this with you all since there seemed to be a lot of enthusiasm for it.

Please, any and all feedback and thoughts are welcome. I and my aforementioned buddy are considering making a YouTube series talking about Dark Souls music, so I welcome any ideas for music topics you'd be interested in hearing about! Thank you all for your enthusiasm and support!

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 09:59 PM PST

I'm debating whether I use sif for the cursed greatsword ( I don't think I can even get that because it doesn't show as an option) or greatshield because I am looking for a strong weapon after beating smough and ornstein and realizing, the claymore isn't cutting it anymore.
