Can we as a subreddit make a tradition honouring Ash Lake guy and others who use Dark Souls as an escape from the pain of life?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:38 PM PST

Im sure most of you have seen the post about the fellow who used Dark Soul as an escape from a difficult home life and had a beautiful experience with Ash Lake.

This will not be the first or last person to turn to video games as respite from the outside world. It would be cool if once a year, we as a community traveled down to ash lake to leave a message of honour and hope for everyone at the bonfire. We could set a date, maybe someone could put out a 'quickest route to ash lake from Undead Asylum' video to help people make the pilgrimage.

Just an idea, if anyone wants to add to it that would be awesome.

ÉDIT: Mods, Im not sure how to contact you directly but if there is a way to make this an office event for the subreddit that would be awesome! May 16th was suggested as a possible date as it was the date the OP joined reddit. Other ideas are welcome.

I just beat the game a few days ago...

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:41 PM PST

...And I CAN'T STOP PLAYING. Seriously, I don't think I've ever beaten a game and went "Yeah, I want to do that all over again." But this game has been an exception. I loved all the frustration I got from each boss, only to be over the moon when I finally beat it. I'm on NG+ now and I can't wait to see how many times I'll die now that I've learned each area proper.

    O&S

I did it. I beat O&S after so many deaths. But standing in the room afterwards, listening to the triumphant music makes me feel so accomplished and proud.

    Disappeared souls

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:11 AM PST

I was in Anor Londo fighting against the second big Gargoyle and I died falling from the base with the lever on the stairs. When I came back the souls were neither on the stairs nor on the base...

Does anyone else think the animation to use the binoculars is hilarious?

The dramatic and slow way they grab for them and bring them to their face just always gets me to chuckle.

In Dark Souls, what causes hollowing? Why is there an undead curse? What does the Undead Curse have to do with the Age of Fire and who put it on humans?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:47 AM PST

I understand the plot in general and the goal of rekindling the age of fire and extending the power of the gods (or alternatively destroying them and ushering in a new, perhaps more mortal age) but I'm not sure what hollowing or souls has to do with any of it. Obviously going hollow serves an in-universe lore explanation for why we have more than one life as the player, but what does hollowing and the undead curse have to do with the greater plot, and why is it suddenly an issue?

New to souls were should I start?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:04 AM PST

Hi all, always wanted to play the souls games and I'm in a dilemma. The remastered 1st game 2nd game and 3rd dark souls games are on the PlayStation store for very cheap. Should I start with the first game and work my way through or should I buy demon souls for the ps5 and start there? I've never played a souls type game before but not shy of a challenge. Apologies if I've wrote this wrong or if I've used the wrong flair good day everyone.

Started playing the original this week, thought I could share my thoughts with you guys.

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 02:54 AM PST

Hey guy! I have been playing Dark Souls 1 for the past week and I thought I could share my thoughts with you on the game.

First of all, the world is amazing, you'd hear about all of the interconnected stuff and think "oh, that sounds cool" but when you start playing the game you really get to appreciate all of it and the effort that went into it. I got stuck Demon Ruins below the Capra Demon Walk because I forgot I rang the second bell and thought there's something after Ceaseless Discharge and I had to go all the way from there trough Blighttown and Valley of Drakes (I think) back to firelink, only to find out my firekeeper has died and that I had to go back to Undead Burgs first bonfire.

The gameplay (Some background on my Soul experience, I beat Dark Souls III 3 times and constantly PvP, Dark Souls II once and I'm very close to finishing Sekiro.) is... weird, the transition from III to I didn't help, but I adapted to it. Its showing its age and that's for sure, the 4 directional rolling is what killed me plenty of times so I'm not really rolling that much anymore. I decided to go the parry route and pick up a nice shield. I like the change from the fast paced action of III to something slower and more methodical.

The game is very difficult, more difficult than anything in Dark Souls III, II and Sekiro. In every area my hands sweat from the fear of traversing a new area with new enemies. I panicked in Sens fortress multiple times because I couldn't find a bonfire and I felt so discouraged when I hit the trap with the tight walkway and a serpent mage on the left, I wanted to drop the controller and call it a night. This is the first time something like this happened to me in a video game so Sens Fortress left a mark on me. At least it had an easy boss.

I'm currently in Anor Londo, I'm expecting great pain, but if I finished Sens funhouse so I think I can pull trough.

The character variety is also great, I loved chatting with crestfallen Knight.Until he left. Met Frampt, chill guy. There's also Big Hat Logan, He has a big hat. Still haven't rescued him though.

    You can stunlock Quelaag

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 09:57 PM PST

I was going through Blighttown on NG+ and I was using the scythe (not the Great Scythe), What I just found out is that by using the two-handed R1 attack (which is a downward strike) and you hit quelaag's upper body (the human half) with an attack like this, it stuns her with one hit and if you time the space in between each attack correctly you can stunlock Quelaag and kill her esaily.

I actually had no idea she could be stunned, probably too busy to notice while my face was getting melted off.

My non-gamer girlfriend beat the Bell Gargoyles on her first try (*with overpowered character)

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:57 PM PST

    • her character was level 35 and had a decently upgraded Ugikatana. When she hit the enemies it took off good chunks at a time. But..still...first time? What the fuck...

Her style is to panick and scream. Then start spamming the attack button even though the stamina is depleted. I was laughing as the first gargoyle keep smacking her off her feet. The leaping verticle tail whip was funny to watch slap her onto her back over and over. Eventually she managed to find an opening and do some damage. That is when she noticed the second Gargoyle, and her reaction of total terror had me rolling on the floor laughing.

For some reason the second Gargoyle showed up with half a healthbar. It kept spamming flame attacks from a distance that kept almost hitting her. I frankly did not recall the AI being so wonky before. She managed to dispatch the first one and tried fleeing the flames of the other.

At that moment, she showed growth as a gamer. She studied the attack pattern and then walked (she isnt good at running...or controlling the camera... she plays the game almost like it's the original resident evil with fixed camera angles) to the side of the flames and attacked. The second Gargoyle swiped at her a few times but barely put up a fight.

She was emotionally fried from the battle and did not find my joke that there was an enemy ahead in the tower funny. I forgot all about good old Oswald and when she came down the ladder after ringing the bell he gave her quite the scare.

I remember this boss battle being grueling. I doubted I would beat it after dying multiple times and I did go grind souls for a bit to get through it. Its weird how trivial it can be with odd AI and health glitches.

This game's lore is so confusing

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:34 PM PST

What the hell is that skull in Ash Lake?

    Who is Knight King Rendall?

How did Gwynevere and Seath have sex? How would that even look like? Why did Gwyn allow that? Why do some people enjoy drawings about it?

    Why does Gwyndolin have boobs?

Why do you respawn when you die and don't go hollow but NPCs don't?

How did Pinwheel steal Nito's power? Why is he still so weak even after stealing it?

Apart from getting his power stolen, is there any other reason why Nito is so weak?

What are those other two giant coffins in Nito's arena? Did he have a family or something?

What's the lore behind those tree enemies in Darkroot Garden?

Why are the corpses you loot not hollows?

How come Lloyd is Gwyn's uncle if Gwyn originated from the first flame?

(Not about lore) what's the use of the coins?

I have some many other questions, if I wrote all of them this post would be as long as the Bible. The lore is just so hard to understand, even if you are someone like Vaati, the things we believe can actually be wrong, and we will never know.
