NPC invaders are one of my favorite elements of SOTFS

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:16 AM PST

Seriously, about all of them stick out to me and I love how they enhance the PVE experience.

Noticed how much I missed them while playing through DS3 where invaders are meh except for maybe parry king Hodrick.

All of them seem to have their own unique build and personality. Armorer Dennis, the bullshit magic twink. Jester Thomas, once your friend but later invades you with his insane pyros. The Forlorn gang. You know I can't forget Maldron. There's a lot more but I mean seriously, these NPCs are awesome.

    The underused Blue Knight's Halberd

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 09:27 PM PST

Looking at all the Halberds in DS2, there are a few that stand out:

The mastodon halberd, with A scaling in strength and the highest base physical damage of any halberd by quite a bit,

The black knight halberd, with built in fire damage on top of having the third highest physical damage of any halberd,

And the blue knight's halberd, which just barely beats the black knight halberd for second place in the highest physical damage contest for halberds.

EDIT: Don't take my word for the stuff about highest physical damage, I'm pretty sure I got most of it wrong. Let's just say that each of the above weapons have good physical damage for simplicity.

But wait a second, the blue knight's halberd doesn't have built in elemental damage like the black knight halberd. If you're going for pure physical damage, why not use the mastodon halberd? Well, here's the thing, you should never go for pure physical damage with the blue knight's halberd. If you do, you're missing out on the tiny detail that makes it so good. To explain, let's talk about elemental infusions.

Most often, when you infuse a weapon with an elemental damage type, you're going to be losing around 25% to 33% of your physical damage, for an added chunk of elemental damage. This is a trade-off that gives you situationally higher or lower damage than you would get with a pure physical damage build, depending on the resistances of the enemy you're currently fighting. So, let's say you infuse a fully upgraded blue knight's halberd with lightning. You get about 150 added lightning damage to the weapon, and lose.... Hold on. No, no, no, that can't be right. Surely they wouldn't mess up the physical damage reduction that badly. Sure, the Dark Souls series has some overpowered weapons, but literally all you had to do here is apply the standard percentage loss to the weapon like usual, how would it even be possible to get that wrong?

Total physical damage on a non-infused, fully upgraded blue knight's halberd: 350

Total physical damage on an elementally infused, fully upgraded blue knight's halberd: 343

7 physical damage lost, for 150 elemental damage gained.

Yeah, that seems like a pretty balanced trade-off, really makes you weigh your options and consider carefully if it's worth it.

Unpopular Opinion: Darklurker And The Ancient Dragon Are Pretty Easy

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 12:21 PM PST

I got many warnings during my first playthrough of Scholar Of The First Sin about Darklurker and how he's easily one of the toughest bosses in the game; I really don't see that. I find most of what he does to be pretty slow and predictable but make no mistake, he hits like a truck if you get hit with bad defence against the guy.

Even when he created a doppelgänger, giving me twice the number of things to look out for, I don't know, Darklurker just seems to be really slow with most of his attacks, giving you pretty ample time to avoid whatever he's got going for you and then wail on him. I feel like Darklurker's one of those bosses that are technically easy, but requires pretty good skill and/or a generous A.I to beat well, and I have no idea which one to say I got in my encounter with him.

As for the Ancient Dragon, I really do not get why people say this guy's tough. Yes, he will probably kill you instantly if you get caught in any attack of his, but I find it so simple to just bait his forward fire breath, clip his nails for a little while and then sprint away whenever he flies into the air (I'm not sure if that strategy is considered cheesing him but I did not see any other viable way to fight the guy with how much health he has and all that.)

Part of me wonders if this just shows how subjective difficulty is in the Souls series, especially considering how many times I instead got ripped apart by bosses like the Lost Sinner, who I heard beforehand were much easier than the two I found easy against all odds.

    Silverback spear best infusion

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 11:59 AM PST

Just restarted after not playing for 2 years. I wanted to play a Pyro build with some relatively low stat melee on the side.

I've been destroying people with fire longsword, fire whip and great combustion but I got tired of the longsword.

I currently picked the Silverblack spear as Pyro attributes scale with dark as well. Currently I have the minimum stat requirement for the Silverback 9S 16D 8i 8FTH.

Should I infuse with dark or would that Lose dmg instead?

Currently I'm playing with agape on 30-40K SM

Christmas 2022: I'm looking at you, Etsy

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:55 PM PST

Please, if you yourself are an artsy fartsy person, or if you know someone who is, please: Someone make a stress ball-type plushie-like "consumable souls" toy, or even a humanity from DS1. Every year I look, and every year I fail. The crushing of souls is such an enjoyable sensation in the series, and I feel like it would translate well to a stress-ball type thing IRL

I will you give you my monies. I don't have many, but I will give you some of my monies. Some.

    Heides tower help?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:38 AM PST

So I just platinumed Ds1 and Bloodborne. Moving onto Dark Souls 2. Ive already beaten the game once but that was more or less blind and just trying to do all the bosses. Now Im trying to do a new run, gettinf all the trophies on one character.

I forgot how much I hate Heides tower in the early game. I killed dragon rider and am going for the dragonslayer...but the heide knight and old knight combos make me want to pull my hair out.

Ive tried sniping them, it doesnt seem to matter I still get multiples each pull. Any tips for clearing this part easier? Ive tried parrying but the timing is so different from BB and DS1 that I miss more times than I connect.

Fastest way to get into ng++ for the 2 miracles and 1 pyro from Wellager?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 02:14 AM PST

I am only missing the ng+/ng++ pyros and miracles and the Vendrick one for 100%. If my reasoning is right, it would be much easier to just burn a BA in the Sinner's and OIK bonfires, get those miracles "while still in ng" and then go into ng+. Then immediately go to the Rotten and just kill him... 5 or 6 times? Have no idea. Open Drangleic, finish the game and again, when in ng++, just kill Rotten a few more times.

Is this the optimal path in terms of speed? And will i be missing any items in ng+ that will be very handy for the increased difficulty of the bosses after the castle is open (rings maybe?...), something like that?

Also, is Vendrick harder in ng with only 4 souls or ng+ with 5 of them?

All help is much appreciated, Thanks in advance

My First Dark Souls Game - My Journey So Far...

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 07:33 PM PST

This is my first entry into the Dark Souls franchise; I picked up DS2 since it was the cheapest during the Steam Winter Sale. I'm not totally familiar with Dark Souls. I seen animations when I was a kid and about a year ago saw a video from Dusty Dodongo where he leveled his character's strength to 99 in DS3. After finally picking up the game, I created my ugly character, with Swordsman and the Life Ring. I died pretty much at the beginning at the Things Betwixt tutorial rooms where I pressed roll instead of jump and fell to my death.

After that embarrassing death I went in Majula running pass all of the collectible items and even the bonfire...

How I missed it, I will never know... I ran immediately to the Tower of Flame as I didn't see the Forest of Fallen Giants entrance until my current playthrough. The first big dude was a pain, I didn't know how he attacked and got crushed but I killed him. I also dealt with the hammer dude and the other swordsman later on with the lever; I pulled the lever by the way. I got all the way up to the guy right before Dragonrider and saw a message saying "boss ahead" so I thought the big sword dude was the boss. I broke my swordfighting him and was like, "Cool, I beat my first boss. Hmm, what's in the mist room? Oh..."

There he was, Dragonrider. He kicked my ass and all of my souls off the arena and I was defeated. Defeated all the way to Things Betwixt. Yes, I didn't see the bonfire in Tower of Flame as well. At this point, I got off and later started a new game. I did this around 3 more times before I actually started getting anywhere.

With a new guy named Wanderer, he was a good knight with healing wares. I used Dark to first go into the Forest of Fallen Giants, killing everyone in my path twice because I used the bonfire after I killed the sleeping knight. I went on, crushing everyone outside and inside the castle until I went to the boss. I got killed 6 times and I lost Phantom Pate. After he died, he didn't come back for some reason. Who cares? He was a scumbag anyway. I finally killed the Giant with a tiny bit of health and eventually went back to the Tower of Flame to fight Dragonrider. He kicked my ass several times but I remembered an old video I saw way before I had the game. Only bits I remembered were to not pull the lever and stand still. That last part I should have thought out a lot better because I got stuck and he destroyed me. I decided next time I would attempt to roll away before he striked. As soon as he attacked, I managed to roll passed his attack and his health bar turned yellow, then to black and it disappeared like he did into the ocean. I beat Dragonrider, not the normal way though.

Then I restarted again with a guy named Dark, did the same things except killed the giant in only two attempts and without Pate's help and Dragonrider in one. I went on into the No-Man's Wharf and cleared it with the woman in the mask but I sent her home since I didn't want her to die. I found the lever to ring the bell to summon the ship and I went aboard, well not before dying by attempting to hit those guys hanging on the edge of the deck and falling off with them. I went into the ship and cleared it until the boss. I had no one to summon at the time so I went alone. Thankfully, there was a pole that stopped me and him but hitting each other. That is my favorite pole, even if it's virtual. I almost died though since he did that spinning kick attack and also faked me out with the hammer side of him by stabbing me. I beat him on my first attempt and I didn't even know how he worked.

I sailed into the next area which I can't remember since it's pretty fresh and I wanted to go to a bonfire to use my souls on the Emerald person. In the castle, I saw a bonfire right next to a chest that a message stated was booby trapped. The door closest to the bonfire was locked so I went up the stairs, killed those long stick guys and went over a tiny rock pillar bridge into the castle.

At first, I saw only three knights so I thought it would be pretty easy taking them out. They only around three hits to kill. Then around eight of them appeared and swarmed me out of the room to a spot I couldn't escape. I died. Frustrated and annoyed I quickly and carefully went back, all the way back until a couple of dogs started to destroy me. I was so done by this point I was literally screaming and grunting like MrGSTAR321 when he plays Mortal Kombat. I was at no HP and ran as far as I could without being mangled. I drinked that good orange juice and collected my souls. I used a bone and travelled back to Majula where I used my souls to level up my HP and then saved and exited the game.

That's the farthest I've gotten in the game and I will continue with my character, Dark, to complete the rest of the game.

Please help me with my "Eldritch Knight" PvP Build

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 02:40 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

after playing a str/faith build I'm now going for str/int. The idea behind this is basically to build something like an eldritch knight similar to the warrior subclass in d&d. So damage should still come mainly from strength but with the possibility to use (crystal) magic weapon as a dmg buff and maybe also throw some soul arrows and spears at my enemies.

So this is where I'm currently at:
    Vig: 20
    End: 20
    Vit: 6
    Att: 10
    Str: 40
    Dex: 11
    Adp: 5
Int: 18 (for great magic weapon)
    Faith: 5

From here i don't really know where to go. I'm using a bastard sword +5 as a weapon buffing it with great magic weapon for boss fights and tougher enemies. I'm unsure how high i should go with STR (40 or 50?) and INT (28 for CMW or higher? Maybe even use spice to lower the int requirement on the spell?) and what weapons would be viable for this build. For armor i'd aim for elite knight set for themstic reasons and reasons.

Also how many points do you usuaöly invest in VIG, END and ADP? My goal is to make this build viable for PvP.

Edit: For a weapon i'm currently thinking about a magic infused old knight greatsword. How's the moveset of it and is it a viable weapon in pvp?
