How good does it feel to play as a mage/pyro/faith

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:32 AM PST

I never dabbled into this games mechanics like the way I did with ds3, I'm going back to ds2 and I'm wondering if it's worth investing time into these builds.

    Old dragonslayer?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 01:09 PM PST

Trying to get to old dragonslayer fight and I'm sick to my stomach at this point. I've tried rushing past the knights several times and killing the dragon but they eventually catch up and it becomes a 1v6 on a small circle. On my last run I managed to kill all of the knights and shoot the dragon with arrows to get him half health. When I walked up the stairs there was one last beefy Heide knight with a spear, and I thought to myself hey 1 more this is easy. He started doing his unpredictable weird attacks and 2 shotted me before I could blink. I'm withdrawing from weed and super irritated, shouting profanities at the top of my lungs are morning and now my vocal cords are shot. I want to smash my Xbox into a thousand pieces and then hang myself at this point. Can't even believe this part of the game would exist, ever.

My thoughts on Dark Souls II

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 01:28 AM PST

I just finished the game for the first time. I started playing it in 2015. I am a big Dark Souls lover and I just need to share my thoughts about a piece of a great series. Need to say: I can't help but compare it to the other chapters, 'cause it may be a different game, but it's a DS nevertheless. It would be pointless to just ignore that it's part of a saga.

Upsides of DS II: wide variety of environments (many of which are just stunning to see), creative and stimulating mechanics (eg. pharros stones, tree-giant memories...), awesome leveling management (before reaching endgame you get to approx level 150 being able to reassign the points several times), three good dlcs, several small gameplay ups (sprint jump is the best in the saga, crossbows are actually useful, items such as lifegems or bonfire ascetic expand the gameplay where the others can't reach), a lot of bossfights, fast roll limit at 70%.

Downsides: general stiffness and awkwardness of the character (see below), enemies disappearing after a while (uselessly complicating farming of items), hardly stimulating enemies and bossfights (see below), unnecessary ripoffs of ds1 (Ornstein and gargoyles (with soundtrack, come on) are just annoying, several sound effects are just straight from the first game), parrying basically doesn't exist. - about stiffness and awkwardness: this is the reason it took me years to complete a run: I just can't get the hang of the game. I think I have played more than a hundred hours spread across multiple pgs (not much, I know, but still something) and I can't help but find it infuriating. It's just a sum of small but decisive bad decisions that add to the disaster that to me this gameplay is: stamina is barely enough to do anything but r1, r1, dodge; attacks are just out of control: if I'm locked onto a target and I walk any direction other than directly at it, the attack will follow my movement rather than aim at what I'm specifically telling it to aim. Why on earth should it be that way? Healing takes too much time. I understand that healing is a risk, but any time you need to drink you cannot afford to play the sitting duck for almost 3 seconds, after which the hp bar starts refilling slowly enough to leave you at risk for another little while (I died way too many times just after drinking because the health was taking its time); You are so damn slow at many other things too actually: after being knocked down, you need half a decade to get up and be ready to roll away to safety. Same goes after attacking, after using an item, after healing. The general feeling is not at all appealing. I read many suggestions on how to enjoy the game being something like "treat it like a strategic rpg: you need to take turns and plan them carefully". Problem is, it's an action rpg, the threats around you are the ones of an action rpg and you're just not able to handle them as such. One mistake, you're surrounded by three enemies, it's over. Even if you do see a way out, you can rarely exploit it, because everything about the character is just so slow and counterintuitive. - about enemies and bosses being not stimulating: even with all the flaws I listed, this game is beatable (I took my time and managed in little over 30h, starting a couple weeks back). How is that possible? Enemies and bosses are often a joke. Difficulty hides in high damage and many targets, on top of the grand souls style surprise effect. As long as you take your time and pick few enemies at a time you should be good, but seldom an enemy is interesting on its own.

So basically I feel like I have to struggle with the gameplay to confront dull enemies, while any attempt to reach safety or a strategic position is highly inconsistent for the character's unhurriedness. This is beyond any comparison with the other souls, it's about comparing it to a good game. In my opinion, it isn't a stimulating experience. There are some exciting moments, but they are related to good graphics or plot events, not at all to a thrilling gameplay. I feel like any skill from my part has not been rewarded and that I passed a test of endurance rather than completed a good game.

Now, there are many people that enjoyed it (including the friends of mine who I would chat with while each was playing their own run) and I read some saying that this is their favourite soul game, so I have to face that my struggle is my problem (many will agree with me, but still). I'm happy I finally completed it, but I spent my whole run wishing for the game to just end as soon as possible. Souls are about exploring everywhere and digging every secret, and this one is not short of exploration at all. I really don't enjoy the process though.

If anyone feels like sharing their own thoughts, please feel free.

    Invader Crashed my Game

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 01:35 PM PST

So here I am, runnin' through Brightstone Cove, and I'm right outside of the Prowling Magus building. I clear out the group of enemies by the cliff and I get invaded. This dude Malcom pops up in my world and does a quick slow walk toward me before firing like 20 Souls Spears at once and immediately crashes my game.

Honestly I just thought it was funny and was wondering if this has ever happened to you guys before. I guess he was hacking but ngl I laughed.

Can someone explain the irritating pivot movement that some people use in the arena?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 09:15 AM PST

There is this weird annoying way of moving that some of the higher level brotherhood of blood members use in the arena that makes then nearly impossible to hit and I don't understand it at all. I can't find anything online on how to do it either so I'm just left feeling frustrated every time I fight one of these people.

How do I maximize my chances of getting invaded in this game?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:17 AM PST

In DS3, it's enough to use the dried fingers. But in DS2 I also saw this ring that makes you more likely to get invaded. Do I have to use them together? Are there any other items I have to use or conditions I have to meet? Like, do I need to be human, or a sinner, or anything else?

I know the game isn't as active as it used to be, but still...

PSA: Aldia IS in base DS2

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 05:04 PM PST

u/prestons_gravy recently made a post asking if he had missed anything after beating Nashandra and Eleum Loyce DLC; most people answered with Aldia and the other DLCs, others like me also mentioned some additional bosses like Darklurker that can be hard to finely if you don't know they exist. I saw a lot of questions if Aldia is in base Ds2, and it pisses me off that almost everyone answered no.

YES, Aldia IS IN THE BASE GAME. Go watch Distortion2's GDQ 2019 all bosses run of Ds2 (OG, no Scholar) and you can see that he fight Aldia and even mentions that many people do not know this. It is startling that people make this assumption just because Aldia is named 'Scholar of the First Sin'. Please, get this right, and don't spread misinformation accidentally.

P.S. Aldia is only in the base game on the latest patch, I believe 1.10.

I have finally achieved NG+ [SPOILERS]

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 01:28 PM PST

It has been a wopping 55 hours of game play and I finally killed Nashandra, she was tough at the beginning, but then I realized you can destroy those curse fog things, and after that it was quite easy. I only had the two summons of Vengarl, and Benhardt. Because I was playing offline, I had no interactions with other players and I felt that kinda ruined the experience, but I still had lots of fun. After I killed Nashandra and taking her soul, I bolted towards Ornifex to make the bow of want, (I should've gotten the scythe) once I acquired my new bow, I traveled to the undead crypt to fight King Vendrick, I grabbed those giant souls and ran passed all the enemies to get to King Vendrick past the boss room, I was a little shaken, as I saw how much damage he can do in videos, and how his attacks sweep far. But I was ready to truly beat the game, I applied the great magic weapon buff to my greatsword (which I've kept the whole play through) and swung like there was no tomorrow. I've made sure to equip the slumbering dragon shield and the chloranthy ring, so I could regen stanima quickly after my flurry of swings. I quickly noticed how much healthy he had with my first two swings and gotten worried, too worried that I broke focused and allowed myself to get hit, then I realized my fatal flaw, my chest piece was the wrong chest piece, I had two Llewellyn tunics and one had no upgrades while the other was +5, I HAD THE WRONG TUNIC, I was quickly swept up by King Vendricks sword, and died without doing much to his health bar, I caught on to my mistakes and corrected them accordingly, I then threw myself towards him another time but died before I could reach half of his health bar. I was quite demoralized, as it looked like I was underpowered for this fight, I got back up to the boss room to fight one more time, I dodged and rolled so many times that sometimes I missed my window to hit him, I use all 8 of my estus before I lowered his hp to 50%, I was now on life gems, I kept rolling and healing and rolling and healing until, I finally got some hits on him, many hits, but I saw that my stanima was low, so backed off and kept hitting when I could and dodging when it was needing, I soon realized that I've learnt his attack pattern and soon he was on his last leg, I swiftly finished the fight with an over head swing of my trusty greatsword, I have killed a king. I looked on the top of my screen and saw an achievement, simply named Vendrick. I have done it. I then saw something weird about the boss, he didnt drop a soul.. I was a little shocked thinking it was bugged, so I made my first wiki search and my worry had turned into reassurance, I had killed him. And all I had to to do was travel to the Shrine of Amana to claim my prize. So there's the story on how I beat DS2, not the best, as I'm not a good writer. But I felt I need to tell someone about this triumph! Happy thanks giving and PRAISE THE SUN [T]/

Is the singing milfanito in Drangleic Castle intended?

    Was this intended to happen?

    To be a sunbro

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 06:57 AM PST

*try and read in Vaati's voice.

To be a sunbro is not just to offer help to other fellow undead. To be a sunbro is *also to *ASK for help.

Being a sunbro allows you to obtain sunlight medals from helping fellow undead in need. These medals may be used to obtain...great power blessed by the Sun God himself.

And as a faithful sunbro we strive to collect these medals to become stronger, to seek the king, lest lest something. And as a good Sunbro we know that others need to obtain these medals as well, and so we accept their offer to help. Not because we need the help, but because they needed it (medals).

(I bought SOTFS few days ago, or is yesterday i dont remember, but I have fun playing it, its such a fresh take after finishing dark souls vanilla few times already, the graphics, the reshuffling of enemies, and the presence of pursuer for our parry practices. Oh and also this time I'm able to support the devs by buying the legit game instead of my old cracked version. So yeah I'm excited to play online. Will be looking forward to summon more sunbros in case they needed the medals. Also, thanks IkoNick for the help earlier)

How do you explain Dark Souls series lore to a casual player? Elevator Pitch Style!

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 05:07 AM PST

    Note:

Elevator Pitch is when you can explain something within any random person any topic within as less words as possible

This is due to I'm one of those people who not know anything about the souls series when it was booming with Demon Souls and Dark Souls 1 back in the day, I didn't wanna play it or anything because I thought it was a cheap game that kills you for no reason. It was only through small Elevator pitches made by let's players who talk about it (Thank you Best Friends) while playing another game is what brought me to it.

Now I love the series so much I can't go back to playing other games that are easy, grindy, slow paced cutscene heavy games like Assassins Creeds or Witchers or Dragon Ages.

So with that said, how would you explain to a casual person who can get behind the idea of what Souls series is?

Let's start with a few pitches!

Dark Souls is what if Fallout happened in Skyrim, the universe is in a post apocalyptic era and rather than seeing destroyed buildings, cars, technology, we see destroyed castles, dead knights and faded magic.

Dark Souls is what if medieval fantasy wasn't written to be a feel good story but a realistic idea of what would happen if people couldn't just die and the bad guy isn't stoppable

Dark Souls is what if a fairy tale about 'immortality, darkness, heroes and death' didn't have a happily ever after.

Dark Souls is a game about medieval fantasy isn't as fun as it is presented to us by modern media

I'm sorry if I butchered a ton of lore from these pitches lol, that is why I'm asking you to give your own interpretation of the series!

These pitches aren't meant to spoil or say what the actual lore of Souls is, I know about the Fire, the Darkness, and all the flow of time concepts in the game from tons of Vaati videos, I wanted to say as generic and casual person understandable terms.

So how would you guys explain what Souls is to a casual person?
