Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

There are so many tiny things that are making me fall in love with this game

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 10:29 AM PDT

So I just did Tomb of the Giants today. I knew it was gonna be dark beforehand, but that's all I knew. Ok, I thought, it's gonna suck but it's gotta be done....

...and then I found the skull lantern.

It's stupid how happy this item made me. Like sure it would make the area easier but it wasn't just that. I'd just never gotten this much satisfaction out of getting a light source in a video game before. It's always something that's just given to you for dark areas, or super easy to find. But this is the only time a game gave me a torch and I felt truly lucky and blessed to get it. Like it just dropped from one of those skele-mages, I wasn't even expecting it but there it was, a gift from the gods, literally just a light source.

The game's difficult but it never wants to piss you off. It's just hard enough that every tiny thing that helps, you appreciate it so much more. Hence why bonfires are so iconic when most other video game checkpoints are taken for granted. God I love this game, and I'm not even done.

Also, bonus, I somehow went into the Nito fight with no estus left and got him first try. Which only made my day even better.

Edit: almost forgot to mention, the lantern also added some depth that I wasn't expecting. I had to have it in one hand and block for it to work, but my main weapon was two handed to meet strength req. So it also became a game of spotting an enemy, judging the correct distance, then putting away the light and charging at them with a blind sprint slam and hoping I got out unscathed. Good shit.

Are you tired of me yet?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 03:01 PM PDT

It's me again. I'm sorry if you're tired of my progress updates, I just don't have anyone to talk about DS with except for here. This is just a new player being excited about beating some bosses, feel free to skip.

I just beat the Butterfly, Capra Demon, and Gaping Dragon these past three days. Everything you have said regarding the Capra Demon fight was accurate, it's awful. I fortunately got past it without too many attempts. This leads me to...

God, the Gaping Dragon kicked my butt! It took like 8 attempts! And it wasn't because I didn't have a strategy, I just got some seriously unlucky hits. This has been the most difficult boss for me yet, but that just made defeating it all the more satisfying.

Thank you for listening and being the best community I've been in. Your support has been most appreciated.

Up next, Blight Town. Wish me luck!

Theory on exactly how Faith works, lorewise

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 05:17 PM PDT

By spending your Souls on Faith, they are actually sacrifices to the gods. They strengthen your Miracles to reward such devotion. Explanation below:

By consuming Souls to level up, you grow more powerful. But Faith is different. There should be no need for blind faith when the gods are as real as you and I.

Souls are highly prized as they grant power, whether you're god or man. Perhaps by levelling up Faith, you're not spending the Souls on yourself, but offering them to the gods. You're making a sacrifice, and a pretty big one at that.

Such a sacrifice wouldn't go unnoticed by the gods, so they would reward you for your devotion. They have a system in place; when you sacrifice your Souls to the gods, your Miracles become more powerful as a reward.

An automatic system would explain why Faith lvl ups work even after the gods are long dead.

Just a showerthought I had, not rooted in any lore. I just thought it made sense on how to measure Faith.

Beat my first ever SL1 run! (No Pyromancy)

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 08:44 PM PDT

Still surprised that I was able to do it. Gwyn was a major pain ( I suck at parrying) but after many hours, I finally beat it!

(Darksouls vets) How long does it take you on average to beat the game from a fresh save? I'm down to around 7-8 hours.

Dark souls 2 keybindings not saving (pc mouse and keyboard)

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 03:35 AM PDT

A fee days ago I beat dark souls remastered for the first time. Since I want to beat all dark souls games in chronological order, I decided on playing dark souls 2. Apparently, the changes I make to the mouse and keyboard keybinds don't save. I was wondering if anyone had this problem, and if anyone here knows how to fix it.

I'm Am feeling The Rage That Only Death By Gravity Can Bring

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 07:28 PM PDT

So tonight I killed Priscilla, killed nito , killed the bed of chaos which is still completely b******* (I mean how the hell does the sweep completely throw me into the hole when I have a great shield two-handed raised and a full stamina bar), killed sif and decided to head to New Londo. New Londo is not terribly difficult but those freaking ghosts make me mad as hell that aside though once you know where they are easy enough. But on my way to open the sluice I accidentally fell off of the path because I forgot that there is a gap in the walkway going around the outside of the the decrepit old church church I guess. I don't know why but for some reason after getting through the demon ruins and isilith so easily and the tomb of giants so easily this just made me want to put it down for tonight

the true final boss of Dark Souls is and it always has been gravity and as far as I know no one has beaten it. oh yes a few have tricked it with that skip upper Bkight Town glitch but no one has ever been able to defeat it once and for all.

Platinum achieved - what makes the so great

    Posted: 12 Oct 2020 02:05 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

Dark Souls 1 is easily my favorite game and thanks to this subreddit I felt really motivated to complete the game in it's entirety. For me this did not just mean getting the platinum but getting every item in the game. All bossweapons, all regular weapons, all souls, rings and so on. You get the picture.

This journey (and VaatiVidya's videos of course) really helped me understand the lore and to some degree Lordran itself so much better.

As mentioned in the title I really wanted to understand what makes DS1 so special for me and I got to the conclusion that what I appreciated most was the interconnection between world, lore and items. The attention to detail in this regard is absurd. It doesn't just matter what you find or what it does but also where you obtain certain items. It just helps building the larger picture for oneself so much more than a plain cutscene could ever do.

I loved how nobody ever really explains the purpose of the "chosen" undead. Nobody in this world is truly trustworthy and nobody in this world really plays with open cards. For example I always thought Frampt and Kaathe were playing games kinda like Littlefinger in GoT but by now I really think they are just as afraid of the end of the world (and the serpent's role in the world?) as anyone else.

There are so many nuances to this kind of storytelling that every detail has its meaning and it isn't easily reproduced. DS1 is a lightning caught in a bottle. Closest thing to this in my opinion would be Bloodborne.

I have a thousand more thoughts on why this game is a masterpiece and why it will stand out for decades to come but the storytelling through worlddesign is what really brings the game to the next level. This is an act of balance between giving the player the active choice to care about the lore or not and telling just enough through the world itself to get the player to even care at all. DS1 nails this.

I am still overwhelmed by this lovely community - there aren't that many that havent become toxic and hostile over the years - and how welcoming everyone is.

DS1 always had a special place in my heart. It scratched an itch I did not even know I had.

Basically I just wanted to say thanks to all of you and just in case nobody got my point: this game is genius.

Thanks for reading, hope my english was okay-ish and praise the sun.

    I’m so disappointed in myself

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 03:54 PM PDT

I was doing a no death miracle only run and I finally FINALLY got to gwyn, my thinking was that he would be staggered by force/wrath of gods but NO and when I WoG'd him he didn't stagger and put me in a two hit combo and roll caught me on his third swing and I died. The amount frustration I have is just too much 😓😓😓

When can I start co-oping with my friend in this game?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 11:23 PM PDT

So I finished dark souls 3 several times, now I'm going to try Dark Souls 1 Remastered. My friend also has it and he wants to coop with me a little. Co-oping in Dark Souls 3 was pretty straightforward: You could start co-oping right in the first area after firelink shrine (high wall of lothric). It doesn't seem as straightforward in Dark souls 1 cause firelink shrine is in an interconnected world and there's several branching paths.

    Posted: 11 Oct 2020 08:12 PM PDT

I'm thinking of getting my cousins PS3 to play demons souls and some other games next year and a PS4 maybe late 2021 or after. Should I get the Prepare to Die edition on ps3 or should I wait to play the remaster on the ps4?

When dark souls first released I got to the Gaping dragon after endless frustration and said "F this game, too frustrating it's garbage." Years later, I've beaten Dark Souls 3(&DLC) + Sekiro(100% & one of my all time favorite games ever) giving me a love for From &the Souls formula. It's 2020, and I just beat O&S and got the lord vessel in Dark Souls Remaster. I'm about to start the dark moon boss fight and continue pushing, wish me luck boys.
