Demon's Souls Platinum Trophy Flair - Live once again!

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:11 PM PDT

Hello everyone! For quite some time, awarding the Demon's Souls platinum trophy flair has been closed off due to some legitimacy concerns - but we are now opening it back up for request!

    Here is what you'll need:

    • An image of the in-game character select screen, with playtimes visible.

    • An image of the Toughest Soul Trophy.

    • An image of your inventory screen, showing at least 3 Rings of Sincere Prayer.

Here is how to send in your request:

    • You can send us a modmail with the above mentioned proof.

    • You can't directly attach images to Reddit modmail, so we recommend uploading your proof to an image-hosting site, such as imgur, and copy/pasting the upload URL(s) to your message.

What if I've already sent in a request recently?

    • Unfortunately, going through a large amount of backlogs is very time consuming and not altogether effective. For this reason, if you have made a request for the platinum trophy flair during its absense, we ask that you resubmit your request and that it fits the process outlined in this post.

Can I still get the flair if I attained platinum through the RPCS3 emulator?

    • Yes! We will vet the flair requests the same as we always do. Getting the platinum trophy through the emulator is the same as attaining it on PS3 in the end anyway, so there is no reason for us to exclude it.

If you have questions about the trophy flairs you see in /r/darksouls, we have created a FAQ to answer some of those questions.

(This is being posted to all of the subs in our network. Redundancy is greater than the lack of clarity.)

I just had a real rough time coming back from Ash Lake

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:45 PM PDT

    spoilers

    Almost smashed my switch today.

Went to Ash Lake without The Lordvessel. Meaning that I had to walk alllll the way back, and ascend the Great Hollow. Ended up falling multiple times and getting cursed. Then I got to blight town. Repeatedly got poisoned by the mud, and continuously got walloped by a Barbarian because of my halved health. Rinse and repeat until I ran out of purple moss. Now I am at permanent half health, and I'll get poisoned every time with no way to cure myself. Tried to keep my slowly fading health up using my estus flasks but I still couldn't get past that one Barbarian. This continued for about two hours until I gave up and consulted professional help. Learned about the shortcut to the Valley of Drakes. Proceeded to fall off the water wheel about 6 times. Finally made it to Firelink and found out my firekeeper was dead. Had to go all the way to Andre to rest finally.

Needless to say I need a mental break.

I now own every dark souls game without having played any of them more than 3 hours.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 05:09 AM PDT

A long time ago I bought dark souls 2. I played it for a bit and then quit. I tried again some time later and quit again. I have 90 minutes of play time in that game now. Then some time later I wanted to play dark souls again, but I remembered how much I hated 2, so I bought 3. I got into 3 more than 2, I got 2.3 Hours in 3 but got stuck at one section over and over again and just gave up. Now much later again I wanna get into the game AGAIN but this time I wanna start at the beginning. So I see that Remastered is on sale on humble bundle and I buy it. I'm gonna play it now. Hopefully I can persist this time.

The biggest misconception about this game...

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:07 PM PDT

For the veterans of this game who already know this, or for the newcomers, the biggest misconception about dark souls 1 is the idea that there's a 'right' way to go at the start of the game.

This is simply false. Any route that you take off the start of the game is not a 'wrong' way to go.

Every single area, whether it be the catacombs, new londo, burg, or even blighttown, is perfectly the correct way to go. Every area off the start of the game has benefits and treasures to tremendously help your character.

Will some be more difficult than others? For sure! Is it necessarily wrong to go to the catacombs off the start? No, not at all. It has its benefits, making it an extremely useful area off the bat.

I'll go ahead and list the order I went in for one of my characters:

Firelink (Start) New Londo Blighttown Valley of the Drakes Darkroot Garden Parish Lower Undead Burg Depths Blighttown Again New Londo Again Parish (one shot gargs)

Notice that I never even touched undead burg even though most people suggest that it's the 'right' way to go.

    Beginner’s Troublesome Dark Souls Experience

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:53 PM PDT

Holy crap, this is taking years off my life. I might grow a gray hair or two before I beat the game.

I liken it to 8-bit era video games, where you have to die at least a million times or so before progressing. Started out as a Catarina Wanderer with no Gift, just recently beat Moonlight Butterfly and the path has been rough, indeed. Up until watching several videos to kill an unavoidable Black Knight in Undead Parish, I didn't know what a heavy attack or lunge attack was, didn't know what two handed mode did, didn't know there was a merchant in Undead Burg, didn't know how to get the Drake sword, didn't know NPCs could say more than one thing, and I was playing on keyboard and mouse the whole time. Now I've been using an Xbox controller and decade old videos to help ever since.

But I tell you, that feeling of awe when I snuck down the Darkroot Basin and saw that hydra thing, and knew just by looking at it that it was insurmountable— it was the best. Just the best. So I think I'll stop falling back on YouTube and Google no matter how many times I die, and only look for info when I'm confused about certain things like weight, which I still don't fully understand.

Cheese or no cheese, git gud or git stagnant, this is a game that deserves to be beaten no matter how frustrated I get at the gameplay. When the going gets rough, I have a tendency to give up and think it was only optional, even if it's something important that people in real life depend on me for, and I hope that by beating this game nearly blind, I can teach myself something important.

That Solaire guy seems pretty cool btw

Just beat Sif with the zweihander

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 03:06 AM PDT

Honestly, I'm not too happy with it. I was pumped for the fight and the NPCs on the way are pretty fun to kill but I felt like I was a bit too strong, hell I didn't get hit too much. I had a Zweihander +5 and was SL 34. I'm not sure if I was so entranced in the fight or if I was op but when I killed him I thought I was only at half health or something. How was your sif fight? Were you satisfied or a bit let down?

It's still my favourite fight so far, a close second is the gargoyles.

Does anyone else get a lot of pleasure from getting people into Dark Souls?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 11:01 PM PDT

I've bought DS1 and DS3 for a few people now as I love to watch their reactions to everything, and one person took to it as much as I did saying that it helped them with life in general. Does anyone else get some sort of satisfaction from passing this stuff on?

Why do Greatswords scale with Dexterity better then Strength.

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 01:40 AM PDT

Playing with Claymore and it scales +4 per level in Dexterity vs +2 or +3 per level for Strength. I would assume bigger sword would require more strength. Was odd to me.

    Quick maybe silly Nito question:

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:56 PM PDT

Is the scream heard when he does the sword attack his scream? Nito is referred to as a he in item descriptions so I was just wondering if that's his actual voice or his sword is just so awesome it screams.

What do I do after I ring the first bell in dark souls remastered

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 03:14 PM PDT

I rung the first bell and I didn't know what to do because multiple paths end up opening and both paths have shit that I feel like I am under powered for. If you could point me in a direction of wth to do that would be awesome.

    Reverse Hollowing? (Remastered)

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 04:29 AM PDT

Remastered is basically my first real dark souls game, since I have played the other ones but not for long. And when I made a post about it a bunch of people said don't hollow and I'm so confused by that. And now I see at the bonfire an option "Reverse hollow". Can someone explain what Hollow and reverse hollow means?

Did we know the hydra can fly?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:12 PM PDT

Doing my first SL1 run, and was visiting Ash Lake. Decided not to fight the hydra yet and just run for the dragon covenant. As I'm on my way, I see a new animation of the Hydra shooting vertical pillars of water, followed by it hurling it's body across the land bridge spraying water everywhere.

What an amazing thing to discover this many hundreds of hours into the game. Has anyone pushed the darkroot hydra to see if it can also fly?

Dark souls remastered dragon bridge glitch

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 05:16 PM PDT

So I bought the game for xbox around 2011-2012 and then picked it up again for the switch a few years back. I've made it past S&O twice now but have never actually beaten the game.

I decided to do a Black Knight Halberd run, spec'ing to use the cursed greatsword of artorias as secondary for the lols.

So I ended up going through the darkroot basin to the blacksmith and back to firelink to open shortcuts. During this sequence I fought my way under the bridge and then walked up to where the dragon flies by.

Turns out since I never had the first dragon cutscenes fighting my way up to the castle, the dragon never came to clear the bridge. I was able to run directly to the end, lit the bonfire and opened the gate.

I've lurked a ton of strats and don't believe anyone ever mentioned a dragon skip run, figured I'd share.

What are some things you havent tried yet?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 02:42 AM PDT

I finished my first playthrough last 2 weeks, and Im not really the type to replay a game over and over again especially if its story-based. I havent tried the Great Hollow path to Blighttown, I havent killed the Hydra in Ash Lake, I havent tried any sorceries, I havent tried killing Smough first then Ornstein and after Manus I sorta forgot to kill Kalameet as I progressed through the Lords. Im not sure if Ill try a new playthrough, but Im playing DS3 right now.

I was wondering if any other experienced players here have never tried one thing in all of their gametime!

    Torn between 2 Faith/DMB Builds

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:55 PM PDT

I'm looking for some feedback on two PvP builds that I've created that are focused on putting out immense damage with Darkmoon Blade + Power Within, using Lingering Dragoncrest Ring. I suppose the main mechanical difference between the two is fast-rolling with a shield, vs. medium-rolling while 2-handing the weapon.

The "Battle Mage" is a good deal beefier, 2-hands the OGS (enchantable!) to hit harder but slower, and adds Dark Bead (maybe unnecessary): SL124 - Medium Roll - 54 Poise - http://mmdks.com/aai8

The "Darkmoon Magus" is faster, but still good defenses (thanks to Havel's ring), and wields the Balder Side Sword + Crest Shield: SL127 - Fast Roll - 42 Poise - http://mmdks.com/aai7

Overall, it seems like the first one is a better use of the stats, and more forgiving of making mistakes. However, dodging and shield blocking seem so valuable in this game, and maybe I should even abandon the LDCR for DWGR? Power Within sort of implies a glass-cannon build, which seems to align more with the faster build, despite less dmg per hit. But maybe the extra poise damage from the OGS is more likely to stun? Plus that AoE special attack seems nice, and the extra variety in the build seems good to catch opponents off guard?

Anyways, which build would you pick, and why? Or if you would change the stats/equipment, what would you do? I did think about the Uchigatana over BSS, or adding enough strength to 1H the OGS, but that just forces my SL even higher to meet the requirements.
