Demon's Souls Platinum Trophy Flair - Live once again!

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:11 PM PDT

Hello everyone! For quite some time, awarding the Demon's Souls platinum trophy flair has been closed off due to some legitimacy concerns - but we are now opening it back up for request!

    Here is what you'll need:

    • An image of the in-game character select screen, with playtimes visible.

    • An image of the Toughest Soul Trophy.

    • An image of your inventory screen, showing at least 3 Rings of Sincere Prayer.

Here is how to send in your request:

    • You can send us a modmail with the above mentioned proof.

    • You can't directly attach images to Reddit modmail, so we recommend uploading your proof to an image-hosting site, such as imgur, and copy/pasting the upload URL(s) to your message.

What if I've already sent in a request recently?

    • Unfortunately, going through a large amount of backlogs is very time consuming and not altogether effective. For this reason, if you have made a request for the platinum trophy flair during its absense, we ask that you resubmit your request and that it fits the process outlined in this post.

Can I still get the flair if I attained platinum through the RPCS3 emulator?

    • Yes! We will vet the flair requests the same as we always do. Getting the platinum trophy through the emulator is the same as attaining it on PS3 in the end anyway, so there is no reason for us to exclude it.

If you have questions about the trophy flairs you see in /r/DarkSouls2, we have created a FAQ to answer some of those questions.

(This is being posted to all of the subs in our network. Redundancy is greater than the lack of clarity.)

I’m convinced Sir Alonne has the most broken grab hitbox I’ve ever seen

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:55 PM PDT

I've played all of DS1, DS3 both including the dlcs and have beat every boss on DS2 except alonne and I think I have found the worst grab hitbox you can literally be at no point in front of his sword when he does the forward jab type of grab and you will teleport onto the blade and he'll get his damage buff it's actually kind of corny tbh I can't think of any other boss with such a broken grab hitbox

Arsenal of the Awful: Great Machete

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 01:47 PM PDT

Ah the Great Machete...the weapon that straight up tells you that it's a shitty, fragile, impractical intimidation tool that you shouldn't use. And that description is a pretty apt warning albeit not for the reason you'd expect.

Because you see, the Great Machete shares a special reaper moveset with the Full Moon Sickle, in that the 1-handed R1s are halberd R1s and the 2-handed R1 first attack is a wide side-sweep instead of that shitty reaper overhead slash. But, unlike the Full Moon Sickle, the Great Machete is actually long enough to combo its 2-handed R1s...most of the time.

This is because the length is pretty huge for a reaper, and the sweet spot seems to be larger since rather than a small sickle blade, it's the Bloodborne Saw Cleaver looking mofo strapped to the stick that's laid out straight for maximum beast carving. Yeah, this is the Saw Cleaver's handicapped grandpa whose as slow as that suggests.

So what about damage? Well, surprisingly the Great Machete does have decent Strength scaling (thanks to an old patch buff...that ended up pointless because still no one used it) and mediocre base damage (pre-patch base damage was ASS). Unfortunately, those numbers will rarely ever be seen because 90% of the time you're going to hit with the handle.

Because the long reach turns out to be the source of this goddamn weapon's misery because it's so much harder to land the sweet spot, despite the long blade, since most enemies and players are going to be right in your face. And those that aren't will be using fast, harder hitting, and more durable weapons to out-trade your ass in a hit. This is even worse for PvE because calculating optimal distance is not only annoying because you move goddamn forwards for the 1-handed attacks, ruining sweet spot calculations, but also because this thing BREAKS SO FUCKING EASILY.

Halberds and reapers with their sweet spot bullshit take extra durability damage if the handle hits instead of the sweet spot blade, and because this thing is so long and difficult to gauge proper sweet spot hitting, it crumbles really fucking quickly without Bracing Knuckle Ring.

Yes, that's right, this is a weapon where the Bracing Knuckle Ring ISN'T used for more special attack spamming, but just to keep its elmer's glued beginner's wood shop project ass from breaking in 5 minutes. Hell, you can't even fight a lot of bosses without it under threat of breaking because you're probably going to mis-calculate its sweet spot a lot and cause its reduced damage, durability smacked handle to break during the fight, if it didn't break on the way to said fight.

So if it has a halberd 1-handed R1, not even reaper tech can save it, right? Well, as it turns out, reaper tech does actually work with halberd 1-handed R1 and L1 alternation spamming (get ready for a wave of double Mastadon Halberd stunlockers, bois!), but the Great Machete doesn't have the sweet spot shield pierce. As a result...the Full Moon Sickle is much better in every way (easier to hit its sweet spots too) and also has crazy bleed values to synergize with the meme stunlock bullshit. It is also easier to get out of this "halberd lock" than proper reaper lock tech due to how much more stamina you use per swing (so not as many hits), but does...kind of work.

Work at breaking the Great Machete faster, that is. God...this thing in DkS3 was my Oogie Boogie cosplaying, noob boogeyman twink's baby and it still sucked there too since it was one of the only 2 goddamn weapons without a guaranteed 2-hit combo. But in DkS2, it sucks on a whole different level despite having good quirks that honestly would have made it pretty decent if it wasn't for the ass durability and awkward reach that only serves to break it faster rather than be a benefit.

It has the reach to make the 2-handed moveset work, unlike any other Reaper (unless you count Scythe of Want's and Forlorn Scythe's badass anime spin move), but the lack of shield pierce, mediocre damage output, and awful durability are all too lacking to really capitalize on it. This thing is beaten by literally any shield turtle since it can't do anything to them and breaks on hitting the shields.

Hell, Havelbitches (apparently some of you didn't like it when i called them Havel-air blown anvil coolers so fuck it i'm calling them something different but just as offensive) don't even feel this thing's hits without the obligatory Rob+Flynn or infusion + buff, both of which turn literally anything lethal so that's not an accomplishment. It's so...SO painfully close to being a cool weapon but it's like playing with a twig with a nail in it; it's going to hurt but it's also going to snap in half really quickly.

Honestly, it's depressing using this weapon because you can FEEL how close it was to standing out well, ultimately to suck so bad that not even a buff can salvage it. If it had doubled its durability, it would have been a Partizan-reaper that has good reach and moveset (well, compared to other reapers) at the cost of the shield pierce and that would have been perfectly fine. But no, those big jailers could somehow wield these for so long that people can turn to fucking stone but when we use them, they're on the verge of snapping apart. At least the Old Knight junk has the decency to hit hard.

Really, the only use i can see the Great Machete fulfilling is being a good chase-down weapon against casters, since they don't have the balls to go up close to ruin your sweet spot and the long length combined with the reaper running and rolling attacks actually have great, wide sweeping reach to hit and get some accidental roll catches with. But that's...really niche. PvErs tend to be clunky hybrid builds with a shield to ruin your no-shield-piercing day and full casters probably have some obligatory infused rapier to cheese them out of having to put any effort into anything.

Which then makes me wonder; what does it take for a weapon with terrible durability and not-OP numbers or bullshit modifiers to work? Well, one weapon can be tested to see if this is even possible. Let's check out the Fume Sword, aka the "why dafuq would i choose this over the Fume UGS?" sword.

Titchy Gren = Rogue Bell Keeper?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 12:46 PM PDT

I remember an older post on here regarding this, but I kind of wanted to re-dive into this concept.

So, Titchy Gren is the leader of the Brotherhood of Blood, and an adherent of Nahr Alma, the God of Blood. Dude's super into blood, he just can't get over it. His small stature and... interesting voice (even stranger in the beta) often take the most notice, if any notice at all being a somewhat overlooked character.

However, looking closely at his model, there's a distinct lack of a face under that hood:
    https://i.ibb.co/gTvzpL4/unknown.png

This could simply be a lack of detail needed for a fairly minor NPC, but I think Titchy Gren is actually a lost and rogue Bell Keeper mannequin. Here's my current evidence:

-Titchy Gren has a featureless, wooden-looking face, and no other clear flesh. This could be written off as the Bell Keepers in-game do have humanoid looking faces, but I'll link that to either Gren being some kind of prototype, or just a mismatch of aesthetics, as the original model for the Bell Keepers was made for a different character.

-He's of a similar stature to the Bell Keepers

-He's the head of a PVP covenant (not directly related, but he's got a thing for encouraging undead in-fighting already)

-Titchy Gren is located in the Undead Purgatory, an area owned by the Old Iron King to punish undead. OIK is also heavily hinted to either be, or be related to, the Prince of Alken, owner of the Belfry Sol. The connections are close enough.

-The pyromancy Fire Whip can be attained in two ways: either dropped by Bell Keepers in Belfry Sol, or purchased from... you guessed it, Titchy Gren.

-Both Titchy Gren and the Bell Keepers mention that the Bearer of the Curse "is the best"
TG: Heh heh heh… I knew it, I knew it! Fantastic! You're the best.
BK: Hah! Haaaah! You are the best! The absolute best!
(This is super tenuous of a connection, but interesting to say the least)

What do you think of this idea? It's kind of pointless and doesn't make much of a difference one way or another, but I think it could be a fun connection of the surrounding lore, and give Titchy Gren a bit more context.

TL;DR - Titchy Gren has a good deal of evidence pointing to connections to the Bell Keepers, particularly Belfry Sol.

How should I go about the no death or bonefire challenge run?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:49 AM PDT

I'm thinking I immediately kill the emerald herald for the infinite homeward bone. Then either rush a raw santier's spear, or get a mundane ladle or broken straight sword because none of those weapons care about durability.

Also I'm worried about invaders. I'm not terrible at pvp but I'm definitely not good enough to do a no death run in online mode. Am I allowed to burn human effigy on this run?

    Best weapons for 25 str/ 40+dex build

I've tried the rapier, blacksteel katana, uchigatana, and the murakumo, but haven't found a weapon that's clicked with me that well.

I like the murakumo the most, but can't get used to how slow it is. What other good options are there? (Haven't reached the dlc yet)

The Many Meanings of Dark Souls II

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:09 PM PDT

A youtuber by the name of TBSkyen has been doing a series of videos where he plays through Dark Souls II, and discusses the designs of the various bosses. Having recently finished the game, however, he asked his community for their own interpretations of the game, and this is the end result. I recommend giving it a watch, and if you're interested, reading some of the various essays that people wrote.

Fume knight DEFEATED!!!! Also and what should I upgrade now? lol

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 11:05 PM PDT

After practicing for more than 3 days I was finally able to beat this guy. All I kept was practicing when to dodge till I perfect my timings, espacially in phase 2. Instead of staying too close or too far I stayed in front of him at enough distance so that only his UGS can touch me. Then I kept moving like cowboys ready to shoot. I wait for opportunity that he would use his UGS, as soon as he does, I dodge to right and immediately hit him with king's UGS and run like hell to distance. In phase 2 I did the same only this time I have to dodge 2 or 3 times but when he does that big flame slow swipe attack, Instead of running I cover my distance and dodge into it hence saving me and giving ample time to attack and run. and that's how he lost. I am super happy today. OMG! I so happy that if god says your days on earth are over then I would happily accept the death. This is the happiest moment of my life.

Since now he is defeated I still have rest of the game and other DLCs to complete. I have 40 health, 31 stamina, 60 strength, 40 Dexterity, 40 vitality and 30 adaptability. What should I upgrade now? I have almost reached the caps and I still have lots of souls to spare.

After 40something hours I finally beat the game SL1!

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 11:20 AM PDT

The only bosses I didn't beat were Blue Smelter and Lud/Zallen. The latter I actively avoided but Blueberry I just gave up on after spending way too much time trying to figure him out (something like 10 hours I didn't include in my time to beat.) Eventually became too unfun that I decided to move on.

To anyone considering this run, fair warning that your patience will be tested heavily. On the bright side, you still have a pretty decent amount of weapons to use once you get the stat boosting equipment from the DLCs.

What is your top 5 PvP Weapons?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 01:31 PM PDT

I saw someone ask this question, but with PvE, and I thought the other side of the argument would make for a good topic.

....and not just because there's a specific Dragon Remnant play I've been fighting at Iron Keep that seemingly has a ironclad(not the armor set) defense and offense.

Anyone else get stuck on the dark lurker??

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 08:12 AM PDT

Maybe because I'm a strength build but I can't seem to get past it. Part of the issue is the enemies right before that you have to kil and they always make me heal three times and not I have less estus. I've tried buffing with lightning and using that dark def shield but not luck yet. And they cost too 1 human effigy each time! I had 13 but alas now none.

What is the best ultra heavy weapon in DS2

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 04:49 AM PDT

I'm going through the game with my (mage) friend and I'm going for the biggest hulking tank I can be so he can hang back and use projectiles. Havel's Armour/Greatshield, ring of Giants and Stone Ring. An ultimate poise and defensive tank. Right now I'm using the +10 Mace and it does the trick, but I want to stop everything in its tracks. I'm not too concerned with DPS; I can switch to my mace if I want to swing faster. I just want the thing that hits the hardest with the highest poise damage and attack power

My brilliant plan was to lure him into another room and just hitstunn him to death but nope, he just summon a tornado of deth and one shots me.

Soul memory is a fine idea, about just as good as levels. But the summon range should go up in 10k increments, not just jump large ammounts. There can be a difference of 2 between you and a friend and then you can't summon him

    DS2 Magic NG+

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 04:29 AM PDT

    Hey,

    after a lot of DS3 and 1 including NG+s, I would like to make a NG+ of DS2 finally.

I wanted to try something different this time in my last PT I had Melee (Sword and Shield) and lightning, so magic or hexes would be prefered (or pyro?) Any suggestions and/or guides I could use esp. for NG+. Like what items to use and where to out my 200 SLs.

Also important to know, I managed Vanilla DS2 quite good, but I think the DLCs are still my hardest DS-Encounter (they and Friede). So if any build will tooootally suck at the DLCs pls. tell me :)
