The level design in this game is incredible.

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 05:26 AM PDT

I've never played a game where finding a ladder or a shortcut felt like such a victory. The placement of every wall and every doorway feels intentional. I can't count how many times I ended up at a previous bonfire and said "OH, we're back here! That's cool."

I also appreciate how the environments change based on your progress with certain characters. The Hellkite Wyvern made taking the bridge a tactical decision (do I take a different route backwards to avoid losing half health?). Eventually, I used the environment to my advantage, opting to shoot the Wyvern from the underside of the bridge, out of the reach of its fire. So the bridge was both a challenge and an advantage depending on where I chose to fight. Awesome.

The game world feels like one big puzzle, each part interlocking in ways that you haven't even discovered yet.

Anyways, I'm just an excited new player and wanted to share my thoughts about the level design. Fantastic game.

5 random dark souls symbolism facts

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 01:42 AM PDT

Hey y'all, just testing the waters with some dark souls symbolism. these were just the first things that came to mind, hope they are useful to you. And feel free to contribute your own!

    1. Ornstein & Smough are a dualistic image of chilvalry and profanity. Ornstein is honorable and holy, while Smough is brutal and crass. In the same chamber that you meet these figures in Dark Souls 3, you encounter Aldritch who is both monstrous and divine,

    2. New Londo ruins represent the legacy of games that preceded Dark Souls. These are games that depended on quick reflexes (the movement of the ghosts) and repeated attempts (the linear layout of the area). The market became "flooded" with cheap thrills, shock, and survival horror.

    3. Gwndolin represents the gnostic demiurge, the engineer of the mechanical universe, whose many snake legs represent the many tendrils of cultural influence into the symbolic order. One such appendage, Kathe, says, "Become the Dark Lord." Another appendage, Frampt, says, "Disavow the dark." Is this not the sort of statement that the competing religions of the world are always volleying at each other?

    4. Gwyn's children are based on the myth of Izanagi, who washed his left eye (Gwynevere), his right eye (Gwyndolin), and finally his nose (nameless) after being scorned by the sun. In addition, these deities correspond to the three imperial treasures of japan, the insignia of Amaterasu: the jewel/love (gwynevere), the mirror/intellect (gwyndolin), and the sword/will (nameless).

    5. Oolacile is Eden. Dusk refers to the "evening" the "dawn" of humanity, the first time self-reflective consciousness was realized within the human being, The original conceit of human beings (hollows) was that of a higher, civilized order, represented by Dusk, and a lower, deplorable order of animalistic instinct, called Manus. But really Dusk and Manus are two sides of the same thing; the first dichotomy realized after the splitting apart of eternity's scales in the war of ancients.

    5000 words!!!

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 08:41 PM PDT

I've somehow been motivated enough to write 5000 words on my story that is taking place in the dark souls universe. It's super exciting to see how different people are taking their stances on the story and where it will go based on the teasers I've provided. About 4 people have joined the discord that I made which I'm super happy with. So thank you so much to those people. It's great to know that I'm writing for an audience, even if it's 4 people.

If anyone else is interested on joining us through this journey, consider giving this a chance! You might really enjoy it! Teasers of my story can be found here on reddit, or through the discord that I made:

    https://discord.gg/WtSkqdD

Also, as a side note: Huge thanks to the mods on this subreddit who are allowing me to pursue my hobby of writing. Most other subreddits might simply take down my posts for attempting to gain a small community of people interested in what I'm doing. However, you guys have been supportive of it. Thank you so much!!

Edit: I know 5K words is not a lot at all, but I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on it. Recently I've been more committed though. I've added around 1.3k words in the last two days or so. I really don't get a lot of time so it's hard to really get in a lot of words each night.

Just got 100% on the game

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 07:19 PM PDT

After 170+ hours, suffering through 1 and a half New Game+ cycles, and generally stumbling my way through the weapon upgrade system, I've finally done it. I'm gonna take a well-earned break and go play Banjo Kazooie.

What do you do with a headless Hydra

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 08:49 PM PDT

Can't say I have ever seen this in my time with Dark Souls, but maybe someone knows if it is normal? I'm sure I could use a bow or crossbow to kill it, but there is really no way to attack it with my Chaos Blade. Any ideas?

A couple of not-so-well-documented features I found today...

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 01:20 PM PDT

    1) You can parry bare-handed. It's exactly as awesome-looking as it sounds. Might be a good option for Greatsword builds.

    2) While you can use a shield as a weapon, you can't get backstabs or ripostes with it.

    3) When you're two-handing your shield, you can attack while blocking, similar to how some spears work.

    4) Two-handing a shield reduces the stamina cost of blocking (how much, I can't tell).

    5) The Asylum Demon's attacks are actually blockable; you just don't have enough stamina for most of them.

I can’t even get through the tutorial part

    Posted: 15 Sep 2020 12:16 AM PDT

I've just gotten to the part where you learn how to hold a weapon with both hands, I can't even get past the guy who blocks You from it anymore. I don't know what to do right now, cause after that it's 2 enemies at once, and I can't seem to get past there.

Edit: I should also mention I'm not holding the "weapon" I have with two hands, cause I just can't see why I'd do that. It's just a sword handle and a little bit of sword on it. I'd rather have a shield

5 things I learned from Dark Souls

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 11:04 AM PDT

I only played DS1, not finished but closed to.

Here's what I've personally learned form this game.

Gifted or not as a child didesn't matter if you work hard

Average person can do well even if he/she is not a gifted person. Just like if you picked the pendant, you can finish the game. If you picked the Master Key on the first playthrough, then good luck on taking shortcuts. (Remember you only live once)

Most of the intimidating challenges are easier than I thought before

Anyone revisiting the previous areas will know how easy it is. It is just a cakewalk to execute the thing you've mastered. Dark Souls will become a children playground for most of the players eventually.

Cheesed bosses, learned little and got wrecked later in the game...

Since I didn't have the right mindset at the beginning, so I just cheesed many of the challenges. But then I thought if I can stop cheesing and actually getting better at the game. It'd be a good thing to me. Then, I realized I learned very little at the beginning. So, deleted my save file and started all over again, roll more, and be more cautious.

Now I believe many things in my life can be overcomed, given effort and a right mindset

Most of the frustrations in Dark Souls were overcomable if I approach the enemies slower, take them down one by one. I don't believe to get good is the way. Instead, it should be getting better. First step to be decent is to overcoming mediocrity.

Fate is something okay as long as keep improving myself

Most of the life is unpredicatable, maybe even unchangable (like your past). But, but, as long as I'm getting better as a person, fate is just a normal thing, accept it and go on. I spoiled myself for the ending of the Dark Souls 1 but well, that shouldn't stop me enjoying the game.

TIFU. I started NG+ and thought "I know I'll do the one thing that can really mess up a playthrough"

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 12:54 PM PDT

I thought it would be a great idea to head towards the catacombs and kill Pinwheel first. I never do that. Its easy to just homeward bone it back out.

So no bonfires except firelink, I head down, do the skip and take out pinwheel. No problem right? Wrong... I then decided to check the jump/skip to the first bonfire in the TOTG. As I'd only just got it right on my last run and hey, its 1 jump and I'm there.

So, I jumped, slid, lander exact where I should and then proceeded to SIT at the bonfire to level up. D'OH

I have now died twice trying to get ALL THE WAY BACK OUT without warp! My last run was great, I killed every bone wheel, the necro, the black Knight, climbed up as far as the Nito skip chest and then got ganked by the 2 skele's by the fake wall.

Do you think there is a more stupid or worse way I could have failed the start of a new playthrough? I can't summon as the boss is dead, all the platforms are spike side up as I haven't span them and I'm not 100% on the path that leads me back up through the floor breaks!

    Damn, Damn, Damn.

What is a dragon scales doing in Blighttown?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 11:05 PM PDT

Do you remember the dragon scale that you can find in a chest near the lower bonfire of Blighttown? Why is it there? I have a theory, but I think it's flawed. Maybe a member of the Path of the Dragon was trying to somewhere, so he traversed the Great Hollow and made his way to the lower Blighttown bonfire, but he wasn't able to get past that point and goes to search a place where he could die in peace (because the place where we find the scale is probably one of the only place that I would call "clean" in Blighttown). And so the scale has be left there by a fallen member of the Path of the Dragon. That's my theory, but it has a major problem. We don't find the scale on a corpse but in a chest. So if anyone has any idea why I would be more than interested to hear it.

First time beating Artorias and he lived up to the hype

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 10:00 AM PDT

I have owned Dark Souls for the 360 for years now and finally tried it out for real about a year ago. Needless to say I am completely hooked. I played through the vanilla Dark Souls four times, Dark Souls 3 three times, and Sekiro twice. I finally got DSR and fought Artorias after always hearing about how great he was, and I will say he lived up to the hype. My new favorite boss in Dark Souls besides O&S. Kind of reminded me of Sekiro's combat. Very fast and aggressive and required good pattern memorization and quick responses. His attacks are punishing but fair. 10/10, would recommend.
