Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

I am completely in shock right now.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 02:36 PM PDT

I was looking for an Amnesia: The Dark Decent mod to play when I noticed a mod named "Profaned Capital Demo" posted very recently. Obviously, profaned capital is a location in DS3.

Upon seeing this, I thought it was purely coincidental. Surely there couldn't be an AMNESIA MAP MAKER who also loves dark souls. That's unheard of!

Little did I know, it looks super cool and is TOTALLY inspired by Dark Souls:

    https://www.moddb.com/mods/profaned-capital

This was one of the most surprising things I've ever seen in a long time. I had no clue I would find a gem like this in such a weird place.

Edit: I played it earlier today and it was AWESOME. I can't wait to see more. Apparently it's being fully released soon.

Hydra is legit scariest looking thing in the whole series

It's easy to deal with, but the way it looks gives me anxiety no other DS creature gives.

I got past those silver knight archers in the most cowardly way possible

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 05:20 AM PDT

So after dying like 10-15 times to those stupid archers in Anor Londo knocking me off the sides, I decided to try another method. Equipped the ring of fog and slumbering dragon ring, and I got up the buttress when they start shooting, but only one of them agro'd.

Managed to make it up to the windowsill and burn the dickhead with some great combustion, knocking him over the side. I know it's kinda cheesey but I felt like he deserved it.

After making it to that sweet sweet bonfire, i realized that the ninja method (slumbering+fog) is pretty good for cowards like me who want to run around Anor Londo without messing with anything.

I'm on to fight Orstein and Smough now so.. Wish me luck

My build tips for the souls games

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 03:01 AM PDT

Apologies if this is in the wrong sub! Just some tips I've managed to come up with for anyone looking for some good builds just to get them through the game, because these games can be very tough with a mediocre build!

Dks1: Zweihander. Gets you through those tough levels by allowing you to pancake stunlock tough mobs with the r2. Is great for bosses too, since you can dodge->get a big hit in and repeat. In the later game, you can even enchant it with lightning or fire at the blacksmith to make it even more effective.

Dks2: Sorcery. Some of the bosses in this game (and yes there are A LOT of them) can just be straight up ignored with spells such as soul spear. That thing does serious damage. Spells can also be very useful in the early game to help pick off some mobs before they can even reach you. The best part? You can still use a melee weapon! Getting a sword or rapier with a fire enchantment (one is found easily in one of the early game areas) can be a huge help, assuming you have the minimum required stats, for helping you in the early game when you don't have many spells yet. This is because it doesn't rely on scaling to deal it's damage, meaning you can put all of your stats into that very important dodge roll! As well as vitality, magic and whatever else you may need.

Dks3: Pure strength. The best way to play this out is to start with a fire gem, rush to firelink shrine and fight the ninja NPC down to the left of the outside of the shrine. Using the uchigatana he drops together with the fire gem allows you to deal some good damage in the early game. This allows you to put your stats into increasing your health and strength which is super important for later. There is also a knight armour (forget what it's called) that can be found in the giant crab area, and this armour will easily get you through to the mid game. Hopefully by the time you get to Yhorm the giant, you'll have enough strength to wield HIS MACHETE, that can be received from the boss soul. This thing claps. You can even use a shield in the offhand to get you through to the bosses (trust me the shield is op) and best of all, the boss AI in dks3 is easily abusable! Just either dodge left or right constantly (boss dependant) and most important of all for most bosses is to just hug their behind. As long as you are behind them there is no need to roll, and this lets you use ALL of your stamina to attack, allowing you to get around 3 or more attacks in doing 900+ damage. This is easily enough to get you through the entire game and even the DLC!

Bloodborne: BONUS GAME! Ok so in this one in my opinion the weapons are all very balanced, to the point where I suggest you use the weapon YOU ENJOY USING THE MOST. Unlike the other games in this series, you're punished far less in bloodborne for using a "lower tier" weapon. This is because there are far less weapons in bloodborne so they focused on refining how each of the weapons feel to use. This has lead to each one feeling very unique, and surprisingly they all do quite similar damage! (Excluding a few...looking at you buffed stakedriver)

Hope this helps some newcomers that just want to experience the whole game but are unsure what build path to go! And please let me know in the comments what you think :)

Completed Dark Souls for the First Time On Ps3. Absolutely breathtaking.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 01:26 AM PDT

After pouring around 70 hours in DS1 (many of those hours involving invasions), I am happy to say I finally the DS1.

I bought the game day one when it came out for PS3 but never actually touched until the pandemic hit. I figured why not, I got all the time.

I enjoyed the journey, the rage, the rush, the excitement that this game creates. I played Demons Souls on the PS3 and thought that this game could not top it. I have to say I think overall DS1 overtakes Demons Souls.

There is also a healthy amount of people still doing invasions, people to invade, and summoning co-op help (thank you to the generous person who helped with Sif and dropped numerous boss souls to me).

One of the best experiences I've had in gaming overall.

    Now onto DS2...

    Opinion on gwyn without parrying

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 08:17 PM PDT

Gwyn gets overlooked compared to a lot of fights in the series because of how easy he is too parry but does anyone agree when you don't parry him he becomes one of the best bosses?

Can someone clarify something about divine weapons for me?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 08:23 AM PDT

Basically, what I'm trying to understand is - do they only deal damage to skeletons, or are there other enemies that they hurt? What I'm trying to understand is, if I'm trying to make a faith build, is it worthwhile to have my main weapon (for ex. Claymore) divine, or is it useful to just throw away a club and only use it in the Tomb of the Giants/Catacombs?

I have finally done it! (Praise the sun)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 02:17 AM PDT

8 months ago I played dark souls for the first time. I picked pyromancer because my favourite character in One Piece is Ace xD I struggled heaps with asylum demon and spent days on Taurus demon, but omg Capra demon made me throw my controller and almost made me want to break my PS4 controller!!!

Because of coronavirus I've been pretty down, and the last thing I could think of was playing a game like dark souls again. But I hear how good it gets later and I have played bloodborne and liked it a lot. Dark souls is a lot slower tho. I just felt I should give it one more try, so I made a sorcerer (I just watched lord of the rings, and I was really vibing with Gandalf the Grey, so I made an old man sorcerer). I unlocked Griggs and bough some sorcery pages from him. It took some time and a few attempts and I finally beat cappa demon!!! I still have so much adrenaline and that feeling I have after finally besting my arch nemesis is so rewarding!! I can't wait to continue my journey in Lordran with my bro solaore (the guy I summoned for bell demons).

    Just beat the game

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:15 PM PDT

I feel so empty. I had the most fun with this game and it's most definitely one of my favorite games I've ever played. Initially when I started I was gonna give up after I couldn't beat the bell gargoyles but so glad I didn't. I would ask what game I should play next but I recently bought bloodborne so I'm probably gonna play that next. So after playing through the first part of bloodborne I noticed that it was definitely a lot more different than dark souls when it comes to gameplay, like it's a lot faster than I expected. My question is, is it easy to get used to the speed of the game, cause in dark souls it is a bit more forgiving when it comes to combat, but bloodborne is just brutal. So from DS going into bloodborne is the speed gonna make the game more fun or more tedious or does it not affect the gameplay at all in comparison?

Is it ever viable to wear heavier armour?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 02:48 AM PDT

Ive always wanted to make tank builds wielding huge weapons in DS (1-3) but it seems like im forever fat rolling.

The best looking armour always seems to be so heavy

[Remastered] People who invade the hall before Ornstein and Smough are the worst

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 12:36 PM PDT

On my 15th run of trying to beat these guys and I finally decide to use one of my last 3 humanity. I don't have much time to play games these days and I figured I may as well say fuck it and summon help. Meticulously clear out the guards and sentinels before the fog gate... only to be invaded by someone decked out in plate with a 2H.

People find this fun? I'm just trying to play the game.

Question about Solaire quest line [Spoiler]

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 02:54 AM PDT

I got a question about the sequence of events for saving Solaire. So I have Demon Ruins up next and I've read up on the hows of saving Solaire using the Lost Izalith shortcut by joining the Chaos Servant covenant. I guess my question is, can I do the shortcut to kill the maggots before going to Demon Ruins or should I wait until after Solaire and I defeat the Centipede Demon and then backtrack to kill the maggots? I really don't wanna mess up the quest line because I wanna fight the final battle with him eventually.

    Dark bead max damage PvE

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 07:22 PM PDT

I have a character very op on NG+: INT 53 STR 50 and almost 50-99 to everything. But the thing is, i did the dlc, got the dark bead, manus catalyst, dusk crown, red stone ring, bellowing dragon ring and power within. Still very far from one shotting any boss, which is weird, since i see builds one shotting bosses on ng+7. What am i missing for the max damage? Is it some glitch involved?

Black Knight Halberd AR and Damage Difference?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 02:52 AM PDT

My black knight halberd has an AR of 519 and my Greatsword of Artorias (Cursed) has an AR of 551, both two handed. Yet the halberd does more damage against every enemy I've used it on. I know it deals extra damage against demons but it still deals more damage than the greatsword against Silver Knights and hollows as well, despite the lower AR. Is this normal?

    40 damage a hit ?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 01:03 AM PDT

I've reached Anor Londo and I am really starting to question my weapon. I currently have a magic morning star +3 yet I'm only doing about 40-43 damage per hit when doing a light attack. Is this way too low for the stage of the game I am in? I'm asking because In Dark Souls 3 I am doing 200+ per hit in Anor Londo with a similar weapon. Thanks for any advice

    Dark Souls Writing Project

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 11:00 PM PDT

First a warning this post might be a little long and rambling, for that I apologize in advance.

So back when I was young I loved writing. Due to my current career path that spark has kinda faded but I'd like to try and get back into it with a project I've been kind of rolling around in my head the last couple years. I'd like to write a "complete" story for the Dark Souls series? What exactly does that mean? Well id like to write each game as its own separate story doing my best to put some lore to paper and have them connect in a way. What this is not, a lote bible/compendium. This is the Chosen Undeads story with bits of the more interesting bits of lore and side character stories happening in the background. That being said i was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of some of the best fan accepted "canon" for the first Dark Souls game. This could be for characters, plots, or even things that possibly connect it to the other 2 games. Just something to use as a reference. Or if anyone wants to share some of their own interpretations and if i feel like it would fit i will gladly credit you. Now please understand I am not a professional and this is something im looking to do for fun and share with the community so please don't be too harsh responding to this topic. Also understand there will be a bit of bias a plenty of liberties taken with the source material concerning side characters personalities, possibly their history, etc. This will be especially true for the main character as they are a blank slate. I will also do my best to not make them a Mary Sue. Sorry if this is kinda of over the place. I assure you I can keep a coherent train of thought when it actually comes to my stories. 😅 Thank you in advance to all who read and respond to this.

    MY FIRST VAGRANT!

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:43 PM PDT

But there a was, kiln if the first flame, Ornstein build, and there he was. Just standing there, near and edge, I was scared he would kill himself like a crystal lizard so I had to make sure I killed him fast. So it an up to him as fast as I could and killed the shit out if him. I got one humanity, pretty shit prize for 12 playthroughs of looking for these little fuckers
