Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

I invaded someone finally... and killed them...and it felt horrible

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 01:49 AM PDT

Being new to this game (1month), I have had my fair share of invasions.

I have only ever killed one (and I had help), but today; being a darkwraith..I felt like I was finally going to get some revenge for all the times I had been hunter down and owned.

Well, in The Painted World I used the red orb and invaded...

Some guy...who didn't even see me there got whacked, and then I whacked him some more and he drank from his estus. I waited and gave him some space, he wasn't prepared.

    Like I wasn't prepared..all those times.

    I waited, and he bowed.

Right, I thought, it's the sign that we are ready to go, then I went up to him and gave him the level 15 Uchi and he died. He put up a fight but I got a swing in earlier.

I bowed over his death spot, and I FELT FUCKING GUILTY. I killed him and I gave him a fright and watching him try recover was just horrible.

    THEN!

I see the guys white summon sign by the bonfire...to help people.

    Omg...😭

Well..I summoned him, dropped a twin humanity and I left, then I messaged him after to tel him I felt bad, he said thank you so politely and "don't worry it's dark souls" he telled me.

I feel horrible. I don't know why. I thought it would be cool and it wasn't.

From now on, I will use the red soap stone if I want the action.

I'll leave the invasions like I got so many times, to those sorts of people. I just can't do it.

    Sincerely, Just a wuss

I am on my second attempt at an SL1 run and it is amazing how much different 2 playthroughs can be

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 10:04 PM PDT

I attempted an SL1 run for the first time like 5 or 6 years ago, I don't remember exactly how long ago but it was quite a while. The damn boss that caused me to give up, to cause me to go hollow, was the firesage demon of all things. For some reason his aoe blast just destroyed me, and I couldn't avoid it, and he kept spamming it over and over and over. I am still haunted by the nightmares.

Now with DS2, DS3, and Sekiro under my belt I thought it might be a good time to retry it. I was trudging along at a reasonable pace. Got caught up on some hiccups like Quelaag, O&S, and Nito but nothing insurmountable. Then I decided to tackle the Demon Ruins. I saved it last specifically because my nemesis from before resided there. I had to kill the Ceaseless Discharge legit for the first time in a very long time because the exploit wouldn't work (did they fix that in the remaster?) but I made it through with not much issue. Cleared the Capra and Taurus demons, then there it was. The Firesage's fog wall. My hear was pounding. I was dreading this. I though I was going to get wrecked again. Get stuck again. Go hollow again.

I passed through and did a decent amount of damage to him before being caught in an unlucky attack and dying, but immediately it was much better than I remembered it being. I actually did some damage. I actually stood a fighting chance. I tried again and killed him fairly easily, only getting hit once.

It just blew me away because I seriously fought him over 50 times in my previous attempt and here I am near effortlessly killing him on the second try. It's crazy how you can go from struggling immensely with a certain boss then not struggle at all later.

Anyway I went on to kill the BoC after like 10 attempts. We all know how BS that boss is. Now all I have is painted world, the DLC, and Gwyn. I am having a ton of fun and I am so glad I am going to finally finish the SL1 challenge. Gonna do DS2 and 3 after. I love this series

Edit: I also learned something new after 7 years of playing this game, which I think is awesome that that can happen. But if you cut off the centipede demon's main arm thing it drops the orange charred ring right there so you can use it in the fight against him, and he can't attack you with the arm anymore!

    Artorias the Abysswalker.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:35 AM PDT

The mighty BiggusDickkus has conquered Dragonslayer Ornstein and The Executioner Smough, beat the sanctuary Guardian and now has dragged himself to face Artorias the Abysswalker.

Ok seriously what the hell. The opening cutscene, the beautiful arena, the emotional soundtrack; everything about this fight is pretty much amazing. There is only one hit box issue I could find but other than that, this is almost perfect. I think this is easily one of the best fights in the souls series, the only two that top him are Gael and Ludwig.

I'm using a Zweihander +14 with 18(vit) 20(end) 29(str) and 21(dex). I used power within for buff and used crest shield along with the full Gold hemmed armour. His attacks hit like a truck but are easy to dodge(I found dodging to the right most effective). The only hit that I would call unfair is the one where he jumps into the air and slams his sword(not the somersault one). This attack consistently hits me even if I am behind him with quite a bit of space between us. I was within one hit victory range twice and lost both times due to my greed but I do think this is a fight that can be trivial if you use a high stability shield(you still need to dodge perfectly but I do think it becomes way easier).

While I fought Artorias, the only other boss that came to mind was Orphan of Kos. They both have a similar knock back throw thing, both are easier the closer you are and both of them are insanely aggressive. How was your Artorias fight? Are there any ways of cheesing him?

Quick guide for new londo ruins if you wanna drain down the water quickly

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 04:09 AM PDT

So before entering the mansion with ingward on top of the roof, you need low equipment load and good speed, then hug to the wall, run and jump and hope you land it. when you land just keep going forward into the tower, unlock the door (must talk to ingward to get the key first) and drain down the water! https://medal.tv/clips/33195587/d1337uLbTjS0

After seeing gameplay of the Demon’s Souls remake I desperately want to get into the franchise, but I have one major question.

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 11:11 AM PDT

In my mind, the soulsborne games are exactly the type of game that would appeal to me in terms of atmosphere and gameplay. I've tried to get into bloodborne so many times because it just looks incredible.

But I guess I just suck, I cannot get past the first major area no matter how many times I try. I can't make any progress no matter how much time and effort I set aside for it.

I'm not the type of person to get frustrated by games, I can imagine that's the major reason many people can't get into the series. I guess my questions are as follows:

Is Bloodborne not the best game to start with for someone trying to get into the series? Is there any advice you would give someone who is really struggling or is this just not the series for them?

Demon's Souls looks so amazing, I cannot wait to play it... but if I'm gonna be stuck in the first area for days on end then maybe it's just not worth it.

Please don't just say "get good", I'm trying my best lol. I often pick harder difficulties in games because I do genuinely enjoy a challenge and I don't consider myself to be bad at video games.

    DS1 Remastered or DS2 : SotFS ?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:36 AM PDT

    Hey.

Long story short : I'm totally in need of a Dark sousl fix (i'm finishing my Surge 2 run atm, need something to do next). I played all three episode, especially DS1 and DS3, but none of the remaster.

I played DS1 on PS3 at the time( damn it's old), and the two others on PC (DS2 is old too...2014 i think? 2015)?

    Considering that :

1/ It might be akin to a first run (yes, i'll know some things for sure, but not all)

2/ i played all 3 with DS3 last so i might have to acclimate myself to the lack of QoL changes

    3/ i did neither DLC of 1 or 2

Wich would you chose? (Both is a valid answer - the real question maybe is in wich order)

    Thanks!

    Sincerely yours,

    A Souls junkie.

Strange temporary crystal lizard like creatures?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:52 AM PDT

Hello people, I'm making my third/fourth run or so of this game, playing on the remastered edition, and the strangest thing happened. I have stumbled upon a sort of a small egg/stone creature, appearing very rarely, runs away from you and disappearing shortly after sighted (in a similar manner to a crystal lizard). I have never seen it before and it only ever appeared in this particular run. It appeared twice; The first when I reached Vamos (it was in a sort of red specter form, I didn't attack it because it was very close to Vamos, then disappeared), and the second; In the Tomb of Giants, near the Nito fog gate, I killed it but unfortunately died at the same time (skeleton babies and Pinweels), so I didn't manage to loot it. Does anyone know what it may be?

Serious question about posting Stream Snipe videos here

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 01:59 AM PDT

Over the last few months I have started doing different themed stream snipes in DSR. Now I know you can't post if it is embarrassing for the person but all the people I record give me their full permission to use these clips (the interaction can be viewed at the end of the video). I also share their streams to help give them a possible boost in viewers yada yada. I don't think this qualifies as Witch-Hunting since they gave me full rights to their clips.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 01:22 AM PDT

I am playing dark souls remastered for the first time. So I am level 60, my entire armor is Elite knight armor +5, I use +5Balder shield, +5 Knight shield, +5 Raw bastard sword, +10 Balder sword, +5 Divine reinforced club and in reserve I have +5 shortbow and around 100 arrows.

I prepared about 50 purple moss and 30 Blooming moss.

Is this enough, or should I go back and farm some more?

5 more random dark souls symbolism nuggets

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 11:19 PM PDT

Hello sweet skeletons. Last week as an experiment I posted 5 random dark souls symbolism "facts," and got way more feedback than expected. Very cool, but I also neglected to provide some disclaimers.

    1. The most obvious oversight was my use of the word "facts," because what I posted was symbolic amplification. For instance, it is not a "fact" that the development team chose to make Gwyndolin a personification of the gnostic demiurge, perhaps the resemblance—a solar crown and snake legs—is coincidental. Therefore, it is a subjective fact that Gwyndolin serves as a symbol for the demiurge, because he does so quite effectively. A subjective fact—or "psychic fact" as Jung said—is basically a fact of resonance. If enough people mention that the river Rhine once flowed backwards, or that Santa comes down our chimneys on Christmas, that does not affect our scientific reality, but the myth functions on its terms; it influences people as a meme does.

    2. Relatedly, authorial intent is useful, but it's not the end of the story. Sometimes the work people make includes meanings that they didn't intend or weren't even aware of. If it makes sense to the player, it's valid; if it's too much of a stretch, just ignore it.

    3. These symbolic connections do not preclude other significations. So if I say that O&S are representations of chivalry and profanity, that does not mean that is ALL they are. They might also signify thunder and lightning, aspiration and greed, fatty and beanpole, etc. No set of symbolism erases the others.

Okay enough disclaimers! On to the symbolism!

    1. Many people are aware that the release from the Undead Asylum functions as a birth allegory, but did you know that Oscar serves as a symbol of the Father in several respects? First, he appears as a Heavenly Father, silhouetted against the sky, who drops in the "key" of self-determination: release from the cell—the cell could mean a literal womb or simply a lack of agency in one's life. His next gifts are inherited knowledge (what is the purpose of life? Ring the bells) and inherited capacity, genes (the estus flask, survival). These are the traditional gifts of real life fathers.

    2. The Painted World of Ariamis represents, among other things, being moved by a work of art. What does it take to be sensitive to a great work of art? The chosen undead must demonstrate introspection, by returning to the Undead Asylum, the moment of birth. To find reflection in art, one must first reflect the story of one's self.

    3. Seathe is a being of pure spirit, totally alien to the world of matter, as his archives rests in the world even higher than heaven (Anor Londo). His appetite for knowledge leads him to learn as much as he can about the lower realms, but he is so ignorant of Earth that he doesn't apparently differentiate between rats and hollows. We know that the channelers are his "eyes," his emissaries in lower Lordran. One is presiding in a church, over a congregation of humans; and the other is in the sewer, with a throng of rats. This indicates that from a higher perspective, humans and rats are similar in their groupthink, in their susceptibility to the influence of a savvy leader.

    4. Since we know that miracles are "stories," that system of magic is likely predicated on feeling and sentiment. Likewise, sorceries seem to be based on research, so these spells are more like science. So what are pyromancies? Because the convention of pyromancy education is one-on-one tutelage, we might suppose that such spells are neither stories, nor theories, but rather somatic experiences.

    5. The position of the Wolf Ring on a ledge above a chasm in the forest is a foreshadowing of Artorias' legend. He is more-or-less the greatest hero in Souls lore, and his legacy seems perpetually "out of reach." To actually get the ring, the Chosen has to poke around in an apparently unrelated direction, slash through a couple false trees, and then square off with some animate stone armor (it is possible that this is the first they've seen of this). The green of the forest is a symbol of endurance, of life's triumph (via the green blossom), while the Wolf Ring bestows a related capacity: poise. Is there some secret connection between the nature of the dark soul and the capacity to endure? idk prepare to die i guess

All right, thanks for reading. And please contribute any fun symbolism that you've discovered.
