Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

The most shocking moment you had playing Dark Souls for the first time.

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 04:11 PM PDT

Personally, the one I remember the most is the descent to The Abyss and the following battle against Four Kings. For me it was one of the simplest but yet best boss designs ever, you can really feel the void and the emptiness, as if you truly were fighting in The Abyss.

So I remembered you could run today....

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 04:26 PM PDT

If you look at my old posts here, I played 2 and 3 a while back. Well when I picked up DSR on switch, I forgot about it. I just realized how to run because I was in sens and need to make the jump to get the cage key. After much frustration I realized that you can run. And now I'm so mad at myself. The hours of grinding for items and souls and I had no idea I could speed that up.

Nothing useful in this post besides we can all laugh at me. It's making my game much better now.

Coming from DS3 to DS1 RE, any advise?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 02:39 AM PDT

I'm currently only a few hours left to platinum DS3(Gotta get all the rings), expected to start DS1 Remaster very soon.

So, is there any useful advise or remind that would help? Like, either on the game mechanic side or some habit I should quit due to DS3's more recent design. I know this would be hell of a ride, and I'm counting on it to scratch my itch. Plan on going in blind for the first playthrough, can't wait to get started!

    How does online "work"?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 11:31 PM PDT

I'm finally buying a non pirated version of the game and i can now play online, and i have some questions:

For the pvp, which are the level cap player use to challenge each other? In which areas of the game? And which method do they use to invade?

For the coop, which areas are the most active? O&S of course, but i can imagine the Gargoyles too, Capra Demon, Gwyn also, and maybe the DLC bosses, i dunno guys, i really want to rank up in that Solaire Covenant

    Time sensitive questlines

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 06:33 PM PDT

Are there any time sensitive questlines in the game that will lock me out of getting a key item? I'm in NG++ and would like to get the platinum by NG+3. Any help is appreciated.

    Help with the early game

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 12:38 AM PDT

After completeing dark souls 3, bloodborne, and then dark souls 2 (in that order), I have decided to complete this game I've heard so many good things about. But holy moly.

Combat feels so slow and clunky, and I just find myself getting hit by every single attack regardless of how far into a roll I am. I'm also getting quickly overwhelmed with the amount of enemies the game dumps on you.

    Any tips?

Lack of loot in Daughter of Ash mod

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 03:25 AM PDT

Has anyone else played DoA mod and felt serious loot deficiency? After about (assumption based on vanilla layout) 1/5 of the game i found only 2 gameplay-meaningful items - claymore and slumbering dragon ring. For reference, in vanilla in first 3 hours i would easily find:

    *zweihander

    *morningstar

    *claymore

    *talisman

    *blue tearstone ring

    *havel's ring (maybe)

*kill black knight for a chance of getting his sword

*some shields i guess, they all the same

And this is only a things i can remember on flight, i haven't looked wiki. Will this get better further in the game? And please, do not spoil anything much!

    Broken pendant

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 11:23 AM PDT

So, to get to Oolacile you have to: * Kill the Hydra * Kill the Golem holding Dusk captive, who is well hidden in a back area. * then kill a specific Golem in the archives of the archduke * then return to where you rescued Dusk.

How.. just how.. did people manage to perform this exact sequence of actions without any instruction or hint. I feel like i missed a dialogue since this order of actions seems to arbitrary no one could have intentionally gotten to Oolacile without looking up a guide.

But how did the first few people find out before there was a guide???

Stay in your lane, Royal Sentinel. I ran past you for a reason.

I'm attempting to create an SL1 speedrun in Dark Souls Remastered that routes in pyromancy, and ran into some tough luck in Anor Londo. But, I'm convinced I can get a good run in that mainly uses pyro, so I'm going to be pressing on. My goal is all bosses, sub 2 hours

    Hardest boss in the game?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 02:46 PM PDT

    For me it's definitely Pinwheel.

Just kidding. The hardest boss for me has probably been O&S or Four Kings. Four Kings was definitely hard on my first playthrough but on my second they were a cakewalk. I still had trouble with O&S in both and they definitely deserve the title from me because the fight is absolutely amazing and hard but also fair.

I'd say Kalameet or Manus are some of the harder bosses I found to just be almost unfair. But I somehow managed to get through them with a little luck.

Blighttown as a place of catharsis

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 11:50 AM PDT

I got into soulsborne in the middle of 2019, so I don't think I have negative bias toward places like blighttown or some of the domains of lords (I love new londo) that many veteran players do.

That said, I'm on my third full play through now, and I've started going to blighttown to relieve stress and feel in control. It's become a place where instead of feeling anxiety because of unknown traps and quirky enemies, I feel a sort of clear-mindedness as I whisk through the area on my own seasoned volition.

This time around, I made it a point to grab the RIR from the asylum at lvl 25, without delving into blighttown via the depths. Rather, I enjoyed the long and scenic trek through dark root basin into The Valley of drakes, and finally through the back asshole past mosquitoes, platforming hell, and literal pies of shit into blighttown.

Once I was down in the swamp, with a firm understand of gameplay mechanics and a confidence in combat that only multiple playthroughs brings, I had an absolute blast running around the swamp at full speed, farming large titanite from slugs, nabbing the fire keeper soul using sheer muscle memory, and finally one shotting quelaag with my +7 claymore. Perhaps not a big feat for some, but to me, it really is a testament to my growth as a player of these games.

A short rant from someone still enjoying the ride through this series.

Why the hate for Lost Izalith?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 08:33 PM PDT

Playing through this game for the first time, but I've played DS3 before. Loving it but I've had trouble here and there like anyone, and I was anxious to get to Lost Izalith after hearing all about how it's the worst area in the game. I get there, and what gives? This place was fine! I beat it pretty quickly and struggled a little with the Firesage but got Centipede Demon on my 3rd attempt (first serious attempt) and I thought Bed of Chaos was frustrating yet fun.

It isn't my favorite area ever or anything but i might even be inclined to rank it highly. The Angkor Wat-inspired architecture was super cool and unique and it felt totally alien. Traversing through the lava really made me feel like I'd come far on my journey. I can see how it feels a little bit rushed with some bland geography and the dragon butt skeletons, but it isn't like there aren't other bland areas (and the dragon butts were kind of memorable and interesting to me tbh.) The run to Bed of Chaos was annoying but not worse than getting to Nito or Seath. You get to see Solaire and Siegmeyer too.

Tomb of the Giants was worse with the big skeleton dogs that can always one-shot you and the darkness. Duke's Archive and Crystal Cave had such a track to the boss. Painted World was super short. But if any area deserves a negative reputation it's New Londo Ruins with the damn ghosts and demon knights and no freaking bonfire while also looking extremely boring and having boring pathing through the level. Blighttown is another unpopular area too but I thought the architecture and atmosphere was creative and immersive and cool for getting across the rickety structure and the filth of it. Though I understand the framerate was bad originally I don't think Izalith ever had that problem. So what's the deal?

Had accidentally started NG+, wanting to help a friend...

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 04:49 PM PDT

    Hey everyone

So I beat DSR a while back and my friend just asked for some help with O&S. I fired up my save and it looks like I got kicked to NG+ right away.

Do I have to ring the 2 bells, get through sens fortress to anor londo? Or is there a quicker way to get summoned?

    Thanks

    Going into New Londo Ruins...

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 10:31 PM PDT

...and I just got the Greatsword of Artorias but I totally forgot you need 20 intelligence and faith to wield it. Currently rocking 15 Int and 12 Faith due to a DEX build with a little pyromancy mixed in. SL67 on NG

I love the sword and will build up to it eventually but I just farmed and forged to get it and I'd have to come up at total of 13 levels between faith and Int to be able to use it.

Worth farming the phalanxes to get the levels before New Londo? Or should I just Transient curse my way through it with my Queelags fury sword or Iaito?

I can build my Int and Faith up over time but I don't know if it will be worth it this playthrough. Thoughts?

That moment when you realise Gwyn's theme is just Careless Whisper

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 06:17 PM PDT

I've just finnished DS3 and it's DLC's and i've been listening to some ost, specifically the one of the final boss of the main game, which, on it's second phase, sligthly changes Gwyn's theme from the first game. I was humming the song when it just hit me. Gwyn's theme is 1/4 of the base riff in Careless Whisper. Aside from the drastic tempo, rythm and overall feeling differences, the notes are pretty much the same. I've searched it a little bit and i haven't found anyone talking about it. Hope you'll find it as funny as i did. All jokes aside, this series has one of the best soundtracks i've ever listened to. Papa Sakuraba really made this series come to life with his music.
