I don't know how I managed to do it, but all of the textures in No-man's Warf didn't load, and now I'm in this smooth, silken hell.

I'm here to talk about someone I've seen less mentioned; and in fact my favorite Npc In DSII

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 06:08 AM PDT

Disclaimer: It's not Emerald Herald *roblox oof noise*

I'm here to talk about a kind underrated lady that is Merchant hag Melentia. First that she sees you she literally BEGS you to buy sth from her, you don't see that from the main merchants of the games; for example that Bih shrine handmaid always grinning and greedy and tells you to bring her even more souls! While spending 10000 souls doesn't really help you on your journey, in Melentia's case after you gave her 10000 souls (and buying actually good stuff) she gives you the Covetous silver serpant ring! while you have to spend 20000 souls for a key in DS III to buy a ''key'' so we can get thering plus the soul of a Firekeeper to cure a curse you can 'totally avoid' and even when you give her the soul it requires even more souls to cure the ailment!?! Well I have to admit it gives several other stuff too, but you still have to dig in for an Illusionary wall, which finally find it in a chest. Plus she's so friendly to you and you'r the real deal to her, as she mentions that you're her only costumer, Which also means you and only you fund her. Also she is a sweet granny in a post-war-state world, you don't see that a lot often in games (except that damn geezer handmaid...).

I'd like to hear your opinions about her too. This is a discussion afterall!

    Enemy Breakdown - Dragon Acolyte

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 07:45 AM PDT

    Greetings, skeletons!

Found deep within Aldia's Keep, these reclusive "scientists" hit hard, eat mushrooms like there's no tomorrow, and have one of the most desirable drops in the game - Petrified Dragon Bones.

    Lore

In his exile, Aldia invited many of the greatest minds of Drangleic to his Manor. Many answered his call in good faith, unaware of the horrors within - none would leave once ensnared.

Some were conscripted into his research - it is rumored that even their minds were under his control. Others were the subject of ritual sacrifice.

Even now, these Dragon Acolytes work in secret to carry on the grim work of Aldia - research into the Soul, and the Undead Curse itself. They perform all manner of twisted experiments and sacrificial rituals; the bloody remnants cover their clothing.

    Combat

    Role: Melee Pressure/Damage

Though they use shields, their combat AI is actually much closer to that of the Varangians - they cover ground deceptively fast, maintain pressure on the player, and output huge amounts of damage very quickly. Additionally, they can use their ranged attack to stun the player.

    Strategy

In a 1v1 fight, the best strategy is to bait out an attack and then punish it. The Acolytes are easily stunlocked, and don't have a prohibitively large health pool - the player may well be able to kill them in one combo. The Acolytes don't tend to use their shield defensively - they will raise it to cover their approach and pressure the player, and will generally only block one attack before counter-attacking.

In a larger encounter, the player's best bet is to separate them, and keep the fight in as open an area as possible. Given the large amounts of damage and stagger they are capable of, extreme caution is warranted. This is harder then it sounds, though; the Acolytes will spread out and stagger their attacks, forcing the player to give ground. Be mindful of your positioning: getting cornered or trapped in a small space with a group of Acolytes is often a death sentence.

In both types of fight, a low-health Acolyte is likely to try and heal them selves. This is a very slow animation. In a 1v1, take the opportunity to finish them off. In a group fight, however, this is more difficult; try to finish an opponent off before disengaging.

    Move-Set

    Hammer Strikes

There are 2 variations - one faster swipe, and another, slower overhand swing. Both attacks deal massive damage, and come out quickly.

    Shield Bash

This attack deals a bit less damage then the hammer strikes. The true danger is in the boosted stamina damage it can deal - block this attack at your own risk.

    Witching Urn Throw

This attack has a long wind-up, but the projectile itself is fast, and has a deceptively large range. Though it deals little damage, it can stun the player. Combined with the range and lack of audio cue, this move can come seemingly out of nowhere.

    Heal (Elizabeth Mushroom)

The Acolyte takes the item out and consumes it. This is a very slow move.

    Aggro/Tether Range

    Within Field-of-View: 15m

    Outside Field-of-View: 2m

I found no discernible tether Range.

    Farming

Notable Drops: Elizabeth Mushroom, Petrified Dragon Bones

These enemies are relatively safe and easy to farm, and rather fun; there's few things more satisfying then drilling 4 Acolytes with a single Crystal Soul Spear. The crux of my method is to aggro all 4 in the secret lab, then return to the hallway and funnel them through the door while hitting them with Soul Spears and Crystal Soul Spears. If they break through, you can fall back to the bonfire room and use that doorway as well.

    Method

    Kills: 5

    Average Run Time: 1:09.46

Equipment: Magic Staff of Wisdom +5, Soul Spear, Crystal Soul Spear

    Setup: Join Covenant of Champions

    1. Starting from the Secret Lab bonfire, run upstairs and open the door.

    2. Kill the Acolyte behind the painting, across the hallway. You may need to knock the painting down first.

    3. Kill the Basilisk in the hallway (if it's been freed), then run into the workshop area.

    4. Sprint through the room, aggroing all 4 Acolytes, then back through the door you entered by. Be mindful of the Gargoyle, and stay ready to dodge it's attacks.

    5. Wait in the hallway for the 4 Acolytes to chase you.

    6. Use Soul Spear/Crystal Soul Spear to kill them as they funnel through the doorway. Focus on making sure that none get through; if they do break through, fall back to the room attached to the bonfire and use that doorway instead.

    7. Pick up drops. Return to the bonfire and reset.

    Drop Data

    Spreadsheet

    Drop Rate (Any): 18.60%

    Total Kills: 1000

    Elizabeth Mushrooms:

    Total Drops: 37

    Drop Rate: 3.70%

    Drop Ratio: 19.89%

    Petrified Dragon Bones:

    Total Drops: 149

    Drop Rate: 14.90%

    Drop Ratio: 80.11%

    Equipment Drops (One-time):

    • Dragon Acolyte Robe
    • Dragon Acolyte Gloves
    • Dragon Acolyte Boots
    • Aldia Hammer
    • Bone Shield

This is the first in a series of breakdowns, each focused on a single enemy.

I'm tentatively planning for the next to be on the Drakekeepers, but I'm open to other enemies, if there's more interest; do let me know who you'd like to see.

Feedback is greatly appreciated, especially for this first post!

    Thanks for reading!

Soul Memory Friendly Consumables and Ammo Farming Guide (SOTFS)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 09:20 AM PDT

For all of you who want resins, ammo, knives, and/or bombs but don't want to buy any because SM is a bitch and Agape Ring is our one true savior, here is a guide to obtain all of your temporary boosters and projectiles in good amounts, quite quickly, quite safely, and preferably without any need for Bonfire ascetic usage (save those for farming the 1-spawn mobs and their ultra-rare gear). Also remember to be in the Company of Champions for infinite respawns of the enemies who drop this stuff.

    Resins:

All resins can be obtained from those exploding, gear breaking dudes in Dragon Aerie, each one being comically weak so a long reach weapon like a spear can easily dispatch them safely (and what do you know, the DLCs give you a +6 Partizan and a +7 Winged Spear, saving on SM). However, do note that each of mobs can drop ALL resins so getting one specific resin type might be difficult as you're going to be swimming a rainbow of resins, the one(s) you want being in big drop pools. Still, you might be able to trade your unwanted resins for wanted ones with similarly Agape locked invaders.

    Arrows:

There are 3 kinds of arrows that can be farmed easily. The first is Iron Arrows (dropped in stacks of 3) from the Varangians in No Man's Wharf. One interesting thing about DkS2's item drop system is that every enemy can only drop their gear set once, meaning that if you get a Varangian set off of each Varangian archer in the area, the only thing they can now drop from that point on is Iron Arrows. That one Hollow Infantry archer can also drop Fire Arrows, but there's only 1 of him so bummer.

The other 2 kinds are Magic and Dark arrows, and this one unfortunately requires Ascetic usage albeit very safe usage. At the final bonfire in Shrine of Amana, blocked by a statue you need to use a Fragrant Branch for, there is a chest a few seconds away which contains both these arrows in a stack of 20. However, that stack upon ascetic use increases to 50 of each, with only a single Basilisk next to it. This allows mass elemental arrow farming, but at a cost and doesn't self-replenish an ascetic so you're going to need to go a ascetic farming spot that nets you more than you use to continuously do this meaning that isn't self-sustaining. Great for Dragonrider Bow usage, though.

    Bolts:

Unfortunately, nothing drops bolts and the few chests with bolts have them in weirdly tiny supply. Yeah, crossbows got screwed over.

    Greatarrows:

Surprisingly, the easiest to find Greatarrow is the Destructive Greatarrows (50 more damage than Iron ones and has gear break for trolling). On NG, Shulva has a chest with 50, there's 10 in the Iron keep, and another 10 (with Fire Greatarrows) in Drangelic Castle, starting you off with 70. To obtain more, git gud and beat Smelter Demon, gaining access to the Iron Keep's 2nd bonfire. a 3 second run from there is an Alonne Knight, overlooking a Greatbow wielding Alonne Captain that you plunge attack then kill in a few seconds. The captain drops Destructive Greatarrows, also in stacks of 3 like the Iron Arrows, with the Iron King DLC having a free +5 Alonne Greatbow to use them with while saving up a lot on your SM.

    Throwing Knives:

The rogues in Huntsman's Copse drops these in stacks of 3, and there's a lot of these bois running around. Probably the fastest way is from the Undead Lockaway bonfire to the skelly lord room, as they're lined up in a simple, straight path, then feather back to repeat.

    Poison Throwing Knives:

Hollows in the Gutter drop them in stacks of 3, and with a surprisingly high drop rate. Light up the place and just commit genocide on the area to easily and quickly get oodles of poison knives to cheese PvE with or annoy in PvP with. This is legit the easiest throwable weapon to farm for, and also the most useful which is kind of funny.

    Black Firebombs:

The barrel carrying munchkins through the Iron King DLC drop them (at a pretty high rate too) while being harmless, easy to kill, and in big numbers. Plenty of spots where they're clustered so choose the one you like the most and just throw a +0 pyromancy flame fireball to mass detonate them for easy bomb drops.

    Elemental Urns:

Nothing drops these, albeit Black Firebombs are better anyways as Ymfah proved in his Consumables Only run of the game. No good place to ascetic farm them either because their static locations have small yields and not worth the area difficulty rampup.

    Dung Pies:

    Nothing drops these either.

    Corrosive Urns

You probably already know where to get a bunch of these if you've done twinkly farming, but the 2nd bonfire of Shine of Amana is full of those little mushroom-ant things to just mow down. These things exist solely for trolling AFK players so unless you want to go the extra mile in invader dickery then these will usually be useless.

    Holy Water Urns:

The most useless, situational, and difficult to obtain consumable that you will no doubt not even want to obtain over twinklys. Those Amama priestess asshole drop them in ludicrously rare rates, but their staves and twinklies are much more preferred anyways. Unless you run into a host whose hollowed (meaning that they're struggling hard and probably out of effigies), these do nothing and most hollow mobs can be disposed of with a weapon easily. Well, you can cosplay as a travelling, baptizing pope of wet violence with them but honestly there's no actually practical reason to bother with these.

    Ivory King vs Artorias

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 09:02 AM PDT

Disclaimer: this is not about who would win in a fight

I want to get peoples' opinions here.

I love the Artorias boss fight. It's in my opinion the best in Dark Souls 1. But I don't understand why people love to idolise him as this great knight. As we are told, the tale of Artorias and the Abyss is nothing but a lie and it is in fact us, the chosen undead, who defeats Manus and frees Princess Dusk. What I've never understood is why either Artorias chose to go alone with his wolf Sif or Gwyn sent Artorias without anybody to back him up. I don't believe that Gwyn, the god who feared the Dark, would be so short sighted not to send some silver or black knights with Artorias. So it suggests that Artorias didn't want anyone to back him, most likely due to arrogance in his abilities. So why does everyone love him? He went to a town where the most dangerous being in the land was residing and corrupting the people, he did this with only his pet wolf as backup, who in the end we have to save, and if anything, makes the spread worse, as the Dark now has a powerful vessel to use as a guardian.

Now compare this to The Ivory King, one of the greatest knights of Forossa. Even when he was named King, he would be at the front of his men, leading them with bravery. When he discovered to the north that a great threat had reawoken, he built a city on top of The Old Chaos to contain the spread of it. He positioned his throne at the entrance of The Chaos so that he would be the first line of defence and when he noticed the degradation of his soul beginning to happen, he set about protecting his city and preparing to end The Chaos. Amongst his soldiers, he chose four knights to stay behind, in case his attempt to defeat The Chaos went wrong. He left his pet Aava at the entrance to the Cathedral to protect his Queen, a child of Dark who he managed to convince to do good rather than evil, and Aava also served as a test for any seeking The Old Chaos. With all but four of his Loyce knights, he descended into The Chaos, hoping to defeat it but at the very least to satiate it with his degraded soul. Just like Artorias, he gave The Old Chaos a vessel, but unlike Artorias he appears to have defeated the greater threat in the process, giving the bearer of the curse a more manageable vessel to fight against.

Let me know your thoughts, which left-handed warrior do you prefer. I just think that The Ivory King deserves more recognition than he gets, as he is the bravest soul of all and a brilliant strategist

I got the platinum and wrote a review! (long post)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 08:50 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I got the platinum for this game back in 2015 but I recently got the platinum for Scholar.

If any of you are interested, I wrote a platinum review on my blog (link below). There is no monetising or anything of the sort, just something that I want to share with the community. I use it to review platinums/games but with Dark Souls II, I added some tips that might help people who want to get the 100%.

I will put the link here: https://shinfosplatinumreviews.blogspot.com/2020/09/dark-souls-2-scholar-of-first-sin.html

But...if you don't want to click on the link, I will copy the text to read below. The only difference is that the link has pictures (also, I had to remove the "notable trophy" section as it would not make sense without the corresponding pictures.

Thanks guys, I hope that I am not breaking any rules. I would love to discuss anything about the game. If there is anything you agree/disagree with then I would be more than happy to chat about it.

    Long Post Below:

So, I finally caved and bought Scholar of the First Sin (SOTFS). I actually achieved the platinum for the original Dark Souls II back in 2014; When I looked at PSN Profiles, I saw that I achieved the original platinum in 2 months and 3 days. This time, I achieved the SOTFS platinum in 1 month and 3 days. Who knows? If there is another remake then I might get it done in 3 days...

    Stranger things have happened

Without further ado, here is my review of Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin...buckle up because this is going to be a big one.

    The Game

Well, where do I start? SOTFS boasts a "complete rework" of the enemy placement, AI, and invasions (amongst other things). I was originally excited to see these changes but I quickly came to realise that after 6 years, I had completely forgotten the fine details of enemy placement and the only big surprise for me was the new invasions. I'm sure that there were a lot more inclusions but the time gap was too large to remember!

So, let's look at the graphics first.

The game has had an overhaul for current-gen systems and to be fair, the game does have its moments. There are some areas that look beautiful (Majula, Lost Bastille, Heidie's Tower of Flame, Brume Tower) and some of the enemy design is fantastic. Sadly, these plus-points are not enough to disguise the fact that the game has some serious gristle when it comes to a coherent visual experience. You can forgive the fact that it has traveled from the PS3 but I remember finding the graphics for Dark Souls to be better than this second outing.

One serious issue for me too was the level design. In other Soulsborne titles, I often found myself in awe of the level design but unfortunately, I did not find this with SOTFS. The starting hub is too big for my liking, most of the levels are lacking in wonder/lore execution, and some of the levels are just designed to infuriate you (SHRINE OF AMANA!!!!!!!) Another factor that plays into this disdain of mine is the enemy placement. Whoever designed SOTFS apparently needs a hug as some of the areas were plain evil. "Git gud" you say? Don't get me wrong, I love a challenge and sometimes, a gank is what I need to get the blood pumping. This does not mean that I want to take two steps into an area and get rushed by 3 soldiers, 5 archers, 7 dogs, a giant, and the entire cast of Glee. I found myself despising some levels and this is something that I have not done before in a Soulsborne game. Disliking? Yes. Despising? No.

Another big thing to talk about is the bosses. I, (like most Soulsborne fans) love bosses. They are what makes these games great and SOTFS boasts a massive boss roster which you would think is a good thing? Sadly, this isnt the case. SOTFS contains some of the most "meh" bosses in the whole series. Also, the design was something that I found was quite all over the place. Take for example:

    • Bosses that look great - The Pursuer, Darklurker, The Rotten
    • Bosses that almost look great - The Lost Sinner, Ruin Sentinels, Old Iron King
    • Bosses that do not look great...at all - Dragonrider, Giant Lord, Skeleton Lords

The game had a big issue with consistency across the boss experience and I wish more effort had been taken to rethink some of the boss fights. There was also a huge problem with boss-run-up-fatigue syndrome. I have no idea why SOTFS insisted on having such problematic runups leading to bosses. Take for example:

    • Smelter Demon - A horde of Allone Knights and archers that can 2-shot you
    • Blue Smelter Demon - The same but with spellcasters and a smaller tunnel
    • Sir Allone - Another horde of Allone Knights plus fire salamanders
    • Afflicted Graverobber and Co. - A literal cave of nightmares
    • Lud and Zallen - The frozen wastes of the seventh layer of hell

I am firmly against this idea of having a huge runup before a boss. Why should you punish players for learning by dying when there is already is a health-cut mechanic for punishing death? With some bosses, I would find myself dying 3/4 times on the run-up before I even got to the boss! Even if I didn't die, I would use half my resources to stay alive. If you want this done right, look at Fume Knight: Bonfire by the boss, optional 2 big-boy enemies, Nice. This placement gave me an opportunity to get to learn the boss with only the frustration of dying to that boss.

    The Platinum

This platinum, like most Soulsborne titles, is long, frustrating, and full of opportunities to screw up. You have to get all of the Sorceries/Miracles/Hexes/Pyromancies which now include the DLC areas (which to be fair, are very fun!). You also have to do certain things for NPCs or risk getting locked out until the next playthrough. Also, there is a significant amount of grinding needed to get some items without having to play online/ do PVP. This, plus a clunky gaming experience amounts to a difficult platinum. You have to really love the Soulsborne series to want to take this on.

My go-to guide for this was:

    https://www.trueachievements.com/game/Dark-Souls-II-Scholar-of-the-First-Sin/walkthrough/1

    My roadmap consisted of:

    • Play through the game with the walkthrough, noting where to pick up key items.
    • Get to the "Throne of Want" and move onto the DLC
    • Complete the DLC (with walkthrough) to see the fastest route for collecting DLC key items
    • Complete the DLC bosses (optional)
    • Kill 3 final bosses in Throne of Want
    • Complete the covenant requirements for items (except Warriors of Sunlight)
    • Make sure I have collected everything that I can in this NG cycle (including Vendrick)
    • Move to NG+
    • Play through the game while collecting missing key items
    • Farm 30 sunlight medals (tips below)
    • Move to NG++
    • Rush to "The Rotten" boss and farm kills until enough souls to open Shrine of Winter early (see tips below)
    • Get to Drangleic castle and buy final items from the NPC
    • Forget about the blacksmith trophy and have to go to Lost Bastille one more time to get it...

    Platinum Tips

As you can see, this is not a "playthrough once, collect things, win" type of game. If it will help, I have some general tips that may assist you with this platinum:

    Build:

I have always played a melle/dexterity character during my Soulsborne experience (yes, I know) and I was not planning on "going heavy" for this game. After some research, I ran with a "Hexterity" build. This build was commonly referred to as the ROB/FLYNN build (which I originally thought was a Machinehead joke but apparently not!). This build relies on a few principles:

    • Get a standard rapier and upgrade it to +10 ASAP
    • Infuse the rapier with Dark
    • Get your Adaptability to 20
    • Do not go above 9 vitality (and use Third Dragon Ring to keep your max load under 60)
    • Use Ring of Blades
    • Use Flynn's Ring
    • I used the Sunset Staff to use Hexes
    • I then used Dark Weapon to buff my rapier and Dark Orb as a ranged filler

As long as you prioritise leveling Dex, Faith, and Int equally (as dark damage scales off the lowest of the two stats) then you will find yourself cutting through most bosses with relative ease. The rapier has some immense stamina preservation, has a beautiful poke, and the dark scaling with the infusion is gorgeous. As a plus, most bosses are not resilient to dark so you can chip away until a boss wonders why it just got poked full of dark, swirling holes.

It took me a little while to get this build up and running to its full capacity but it was a welcome change to the clunky feeling that I got from most weapons in this game.

    Covenant Grinding:

The two covenants that are worth noting are the Bell Maniacs and the Sunbros. Both need a significant grind to get the required items/kills.

With the Bell Keepers, I went to Belfry Sol, equipped the ring, and went to work. After a while, I was finding that my summon rate was roughly...0 (give or take) and that this was going to take forever. It turns out that there is a small chance that you can be invaded by an NPC which counts as a player kill! So, I ran the Belfry 10 times to kill every enemy and then did this route:

    • Go up the ladder
    • Check on the Northwest side (by the staircase towers)
    • If the red phantom is there: kill, then Aged Feather back to the bonfire
    • If the red phantom is not there: Aged Feather back to the bonfire

I thought that this would take years but it only took me around an hour to get the kills required. Was RNG was on my side? Maybe lady luck was in a particularly good mood that day? Who knows!

    Warriors of Sunlight:

Now, this is a trophy that almost made me give up the platinum at the final hurdle:

Have you heard of soul memory? It is the number of souls that a player has picked up throughout their journey. Kill a boss? Consume a soul? Kill enemies? These will all add to your total Soul Memory. Now, this may not seem relevant but it is HUGE when it comes to achieving the 30 sunlight medals (as you need to match with players online to help them with bosses.) If you have amassed a ton of soul memory then you might struggle to match with players who may be out of your range (up or down). I was on 5 million soul memory when I attempted this and I was not finding anyone to match with. I read online that you can farm the medals offline by killing the Falcon mobs in Things Betwixt. Hurray! Cue two hours of grinding without one medal...Boo!!!

So, I did some more reading and I found this tactic:

    • Look on the map of locations and see if there is an orange border around an area. This means that there are a high number of players in your soul level here.
    • Go to a high-traffic boss and put your summon sign down.
    • Kill the boss.
    • Praise the sun.

Now, I skipped all of this faff and stayed static next to the bonfire of Fume Knight. Why? It is a bonfire that has one of the shortest runs in the game to a boss, the boss is challenging enough that players need help, and it contains a lot of high-level players. All of these reasons made for a decent summon rate. Now, the problem with this tactic is that Fume Knight is no pushover and I found myself only beating the boss one in every 3 summons. This was mostly due to inexperienced players not destroying the healing totems and/or getting one-shotted during the fight. I am fortunate to be able to work from home so I put my summon down, got on with work, and hopped in whenever the summon notification popped up. All in all, this added roughly 15 hours onto my platinum. If not more. I also equipped the Gape Ring to not increase my soul memory.

This may seem like a big thing to commit to but it did remind me how much I love being a Sunbro and the feeling of helping a fellow player is always great! Still, this aspect of the trophy will put people off.

    Shrine of Winter Skip:

This one was easy to work out once I saw some tips. Firstly, KEEP ALL OF THE BOSS SOULS THAT YOU DON'T NEED. Once you hit NG++, Look at your soul memory (mine was 5 million), write it down. Now, consume every single soul you have (you should have a lot) and then make your way to The Rotten. Kill him, use a bonfire aesthetic and repeat until you have 3 million more than what you started with. This took around 15 kills to achieve. Walk to the shrine and tada! It will open.

Gameplay - 5/10 - Great for veterans of the Souls' games but is still the worst game of the series.

Platinum Difficulty - 6.5/10 -DLC bosses can be a pain and some areas will make you rage.

Time to Platinum - 7/10 - I racked up around 68 hours on this. If you are lucky with RNG then you can get it down significantly.

Overall Trophy Enjoyment - 5/10 - This experience was more nostalgic for me than anything else. It had been years since I had played DSII and I was excited to relive the experience. Sadly, it has a lot of flaws and some trophies will drive you insane. But...a Souls game is still a Souls game.

    "Gavlan wheel! Gavlan deal."

    Gameplay Breakdown

Sound - 5/10 - Some memorable sounds but average across the board with lots of mediocre FX hits. Ruth Negga voicing the Emerald Herald was a big plus for me.

Music - 5/10 - Some beautiful themes but there is not much that stands out. The music really hits its stride during the DLC (Fume Knight and Aldia are two exceptional examples).

Visuals - 5/10 - Too inconsistent to really "wow" me. Granted it is a PS3 port but the graphics felt off at times.

Level Design - 3/10 - A couple of excellent levels but too many issues in the level design and enemy placement.

Combat/Gameplay - 4/10 - A step in the wrong direction from Dark Souls. Slow, clunky, and frustrating.

Lore/Story - 6/10 - A lot of cool inclusions but the sheer number of bosses diluted the lore. Going back in time to the giants was a great moment.

DS2 Easy (Cheasy) Mode -- Part 3 Progress(?)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:56 PM PDT

Before venturing further I'd suggest picking up the Fire Longsword. This won't be hard. You will be able to four shot the Turtles with Great Soul Arrow (maybe 3 shot depending on how you level) and with the Vanquisher's Seal there is nothing you can't one shot (yes, the two handed heavy attack will one shot a Turtle). Why the Longsword, given that your fists are currently more powerful? Mostly for reach and because you will likely not want to give up a ring slot sooner or later. There are loads of guides on how to get it so I'm not going to spend any time here.

Now I haven't talked much about the build. That's because there are lots of ways to take the build. My own personal preference is a battle mage -- eventually using a Magic Bandit Axe with a Raw Old Knight Hammer in reserve.

But at this point my suggested build is:

    VGR 42, END 15, VIT 5, ATN 20, STR 14, DEX 12, ADP 8, INT 40, FTH 4

Now to be perfectly honest you could just take on the game now. But I have one more grind in mind that will allow you to take on your first boss massively over-leveled with a +10 weapon. Call it seriously overpowered eventually.

And the next part is slightly tricky which is the reason a) for all of the vigor and b) the Fire Longsword -- I like it as +4.

Because we're off to the Gutter.

The run is easier if you take the time to farm Warmth. Farm the rats in the Grave of Saints (I just farm the first group and go back to the bonfire -- there's an invader that I'd just as soon skip right now)

If you follow something close to the suggested build you will have 4 spell slots. Great Soul Arrow, 2 Soul Arrows and Warmth. Don't worry that there's nothing to cast Warmth with, we'll get a pyromancy flame shortly.

Route to the Gutter: I prefer to start at the top of the pit in Majula. Start out as you did to reach the Grave of Saints. That is:

Naked and wearing only the Silvercat Ring: Drop down (heal), drop down again, drop down again, sprint across.

Now instead of dropping down to the entrance to the Grave of Saints, drop off the other side (heal). Now carefully line yourself up with the small platform. Sprint across (again scary but you will make it easily), drop down and pick up the Ring of the Evil Eye. Put on your gear. Make sure you equip the Vanquisher's Seal (and just in case, keep the Silvercat Ring on) and two hand your bare fists. You will shortly come across a Crystal Lizard and the two handed heavy attack will one shot the Lizard. (If the items fall to the ground, save and reload. The shiny will be up on the bridge when you reload.

Before going any further, get out your binoculars and snipe the enemy that you can see in the cave entrance to your right. This breaks the AI of the remaining enemies on this side. These guys are extremely dangerous (though you have loads of HP) so be careful.

Jump across the gap in the bridge. You will see a shiny nearby on the ledge. You can try to make the jump (why not?) but ... I make it under 5% of the time. It's not an essential item.

There are two more enemies wandering about near where you sniped that first enemy. Be careful and hunt them both down. Don't leave the area yet though. Directly across there is a Syan Knight guarding a chest. He looks intimidating but is in fact the second easiest enemy in the game to get a backstab on. Or you can just kill him from range with Great Soul Arrow. He'll block after the first hit, but he'll run out of stamina before you run out of Great Soul Arrows (and you don't need to save any)

Now exit the area and make you way down the Towers (There are two shiny things on the towers and a chest at the bottom. You certainly want to get the chest). Make your way outside, past the spitting statues. And drop through the collapsing panels to the bonfire.

Arsenal of the Awful: Curved Twinblade Progress Report

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:54 PM PDT

You see that flair? Because this isn't about the Curved Twinblade, but the journey so far to obtain it on a 870k SM character solo because no one else is dumb enough to go to NG+ at that low of a SM. I'm about to tell you all the tale of a comically dysfunctional, borderline joke Bleed build's experience going through NG+ while trying his damnest to do as little as possible because he can't deal damage for shit. Because i went through all of NG+ in a matter of 7 hours by doing as little as possible, and now have to go to NG+2 and do half of it just for one weapon that's almost certainly going to be mediocre at best.

Good old Flayer Frank entered NG+ when i yelled at myself "Just fucking do it, you pussy, or you'll never get the Curved Twinblade!" so i sent him to hell, er, NG+. The first thing that happened was that i hauled ass away from the Falconers whose birds slapped off a third of my hp and i ran to the old ladies screaming in terror as the new weakest thing in Drangleic.

I then forgot about mimic re-placements and got eaten by the FOFG path chest. "Well, fuck me", i thought, realizing the mistake i made for memes. Upon finally finding hollow infantry, the weakest of the weak, i smacked one with a Bleed Bound Hand Axe and saw that i killed it in 4 hits...with bleed proc being the only reason why it wasn't 5. That's fewer hits than most +0 small weapon in NG against NG hollow infantry, so i decided the best course of action would be to haul ass to the bonfire, then do the jump exploit for an early fragrant branch. I then proceeded to ignore Pate and forgo exploring and looting in favor of speedrun sprinting to Last Giant and bleeding out his ankles, being pretty uneventful so far.

After that, i decided to visit the only optional area to visit for this entire run, the Soldier's Rest bonfire, to get Giant Seeds to fight NG+ roided invaders, only to immediately get rekt by the Old Ironclad Hit Squad led by an Onion Man and Armor Dennis, those cheeky pricks. So, i summoned Alfas, popped a seed i had from NG, and forced Dennis to fight in a 3-way where Alflas did 90% of the work while i ran away and backstab fished. Bless that fashionable, weirdly underused man.

Pursuer and Ruin Sentinels were no biggie thanks to me realizing that i had the Barbed Club, which by virtue of not being able to be Bleed infused made it my strongest weapon, and i cheesed the non-boss Flexile Sentry with poison. Then i called up Luet and Lucatile, and we stunlocked the black phantom jailers surprisingly easily and lit up the Lost Sinner's room, getting into the first 3v3.

And...the pyromancers were a lot weaker than i remembered so they went down like 30 seconds after they showed up and we ganked Lost Sinner...or, i pretended to help by slapping her with shitty bleed weapons which was so slow that Luet the double greatshield touting havelmonster died. Really sucks to be Luet because this won't be the last time i make terrible use of him. But, still succeeded and used gravity to kill Dragonrider, basically going through Heide in a whopping 1 minute and skipping No Man's Wharf. Yeah, little did i know that i locked myself out of Bradley by doing that until way too late.

Huntsman's Copse seemed quite uneventful too, until those asshole cliff face black phantom sickle fatties spawned. My reaction was to run away and squeeze past one of them, lining them up and poking them to death with a Bleed Ice Rapier. Turns out that even when neutered in the least useful state possible, the damn thing is still OP. But, i cleared the path to Skelly Trio alone so that i could summon Bashful Ray and Creighton to get into the next 3v3 boss fight. I pretty much ran behind the pillars and let my bois do most of the work for me, only going out to do some backstabs only to immediate run away by a skelly poking me for nearly half my hp. Dream team right there, and also why i never side with Pate.

Harvest Valley was interesting because this was when i finally pulled out my secret, extremely important weapon; the +5 Alonne Greatbow from the Iron King DLC, along with 70 Destructive Greatarrows (for some reason the game gives a lot of them, 10 in Iron Keep, 10 in Drangleic Castle, and 50 in Shulva). Sniped the Desert Thots, and almost got my ass kicked by Jabba the Hutt. And then, immediately upon entering Earthen Peak, the first Manakiin combo'd my ass to death in 5 seconds.

So then i went back to Majula and upgraded Alonne's long-ass katana, which i can't even use without Dex Ring, and used that to fight a few Manakiins before i gathered up a team. Feeva and Ray again, using them as meatshields against the Manakiin ganks until reaching the MVP, Jester Thomas. Yeah, i basically turned Mytha into a raid boss as Feeva tanked while Ray and Thomas spammed pyromancies, me just watching and drinking some tasty water. Then...i walked into hell's hell.

You all probably know NG+ Iron Keep; aka bullshit incarnate of too many NPC invaders and black phantom Alonne Captains (not even the regular ones but the goddamn captains and their warhammer 40k armored asses!). Well, i am proud to boast that i didn't die once here! ...because i spent about an hour using Warmth, eating herbs, going into greatbow standoffs, and generally advancing at a snail's pace. I also summoned some unlucky NG players to see if i can Zapp Brannigan my way through only for them to all die instantly. If you were summoned to that nightmare...i am sincerely sorry. Funnily enough, though, Smelter Demon was easier than the level because i've fought that thing so many times that i can beat him in my sleep. On the way to Balrog, that one asshole black phantom with the dual greathammers got cheesed by me running around the fire breathing statues in circles and letting the flames kill him. Cowardice is the best strategy. And Balrog was uneventful.

After that i just jumped down to the Gutter, greatbow cheesing the miracle spamming black phantom at the bottom for an easy Dingy set +5 (if anyone wants it, at around my SM, feel free to ask) and just running past the entirety of the Gutter to Black Gulch. There, i summoned Ray yet again (wtf this guy is everywhere but i'm not complaining because he's OP as fuck) with Schmidt, the Woodland Assholes invading, turning this into a 2v2 because i honestly didn't do shit. Then i got Lucatiel and ganked the Rotten to death after some Warmth therapy. Also Schmidt sucks; the guy died to the fire in the arena and i don't think he even got hit once.

Shaded Woods was breezed through by me hauling ass past everything, not even looting, meeting Tark, and ganking Najka only for her to do some 6-hit tail slam combo that killed me. Attempt #2 taught me to stay at her face and sides which worked this time. At Tseldora, Freya's bonus encounter had me unable to damage her since i wanted to conserve my arrows so i just ran past while using Benhart as a distraction. Benny somehow survived and joined me, and i Warmth healed him...then realized "Wait, hold the fuck up, am i seriously prepping this much for Magus and Congregation?! Just go in there and fight them you pussy!" and so i did, getting hit once for nearly half my hp which led to me running to the pews and letting Benny take aggro while i hit from behind. After that, i called up O'Hara and Boyd to gank Freya together.

And then i got my shit wrecked because NG+ Drangleic Castle is gaurded by a black phantom in Drakekeeper armor and hammer, whose just as bullshit as the actual hammer wielding Drakekeeper and its crack fueled infinite stamina swings. I had to lure that mofo out, loop him across the bridge, kill the royal swordsmen to activate the statues, run back and loop AGAIN because that jackass black phantom caught up, then bolt it to the bonfire...which i lit but couldn't sit on as the black phantom killed me. Fun times. Still got to warp there, though, so suck it phantom dude!

Then i called up Ray yet again, and he basically did most of Drangleic Castle for me before his timer ran out. Then called up Belclaire to 2v2 the Dragonriders which was me blocking and rolling while Belclaire did 90% of the actual damage. In the upper castle, i called up Luet as a sacrificial distraction to the chariot as i opened the door and left him to die. Then upon taking the elevator, Syan with a Washing Pole had me running in circles around the Embedded's cage like a loony toons chase skit, probably as karma for being a dick to Luet. Looking Glass Knight got ganked to death by Boyd and Benny, then...Amana.

NG+ Shrine of motherfucking Amana. Well, i came prepared! I scoured NG for the Spell Quartz Ring +3, Dispelling Ring +1, some Blue Burrs, and a Magic Magic Shield! Only for some random Old Knight to slap my shit instead of the magic spammers. Yeah, i just greatbow blasted the mages, crept to the left during the path to Skull Frog, then just beat up the Frog because he's a joke of a boss. After that...the game kind of loses the NG+ additions and honestly just becomes NG with inflated stats. Just ran past most of the Undead Crypt, killed the bell ringing guys, then called up Feeva and Agdaine to kill the dragonrider guard for me, immediately dismissing Agdayne afterwards because his dark damage doesn't do shit to Velstadt.

But HOLY SHIT, is Feeva a badass. She's practically equal to Vestadt and me throwing some poison knives tipped the scales enough for her to basically win a 1v1 while i cheerleaded and sometimes drew aggro. That mace of hers just smashed the big bell boi. Aldia's Crib wasn't really eventful as i skipped the optional stuff but did get the painting guardian shirt (why is this dude getting all the good women's outfit pieces to drop?), beat up Guardian Dragon since its a joke of a boss, then fought NG+ Drakekeepers.

Yeah, if you were expecting some Pillar Man roided out super keepers then you'd be very disappointing since honestly it feels like they're barely any tougher than NG. The dragon champion however is tougher and destroyed me, so i ran past with Gower's Ring and spammed the talk option to get the Ashen Mist just as the dragonbros executed me in front of their masters. And after that...the game kind of just went like usual NG except i summoned Ray in Drangleic Castle some more (summoned him for the level, then for twin Pursuers, then for Throne duo, then Nash). God is this guy awesome and everywhere. He basically solo'd NG+ Nashandra and overall probably did literally half this NG+ run for me, now opening the way to NG+2 and the coveted meme weapon it holds.

This is all for you, so i hope you can see just how ridiculous it is to get this thing. Also, i'm pretty sure Bashful Ray is the real protagonist of DkS2 while i'm his shitty follower because he sure as hell was braver, tougher, and more useful than me in all our team fights lol. I'll probably have the next Arsenal of the Awful at Thursday since i'm busy Wednesday.

Didn't know the full deal with Bonfire Ascetics

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 10:57 AM PDT

During my first playthrough of DS2 I read somewhere that you can get 3 Titanite Chunks each time you Bonfire Ascetic the Harvest Valley. I'd already finished the area and it was easy enough to run to the chunks, so I BA'd it all the way up to 6.

Well, now I am on my second playthrough, NG+, and I'm about to have to do Harvest Valley at bonfire intensity 7. BA carries over to NG+. RIP me

This game's NG+ is truly unique.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 03:07 PM PDT

I started off my Souls journey with DS2, and after I finally finished it I decided not to go in NG+ yet and instead finish some collectible stuff like the Nadalia soul fragments etc. Then I dived in DS1, which I fairly enjoyed but not as much as DS2. Then I moved on to DS3 which I enjoyed the most of them all. Went into a few further NG+, finished it at least 7 times and now that I did everything that's possible in the game it started feeling a bit repetitive since I play offline only (no PS+). So today I decided to check out DS2's NG+ and man is it amazing. Not only is it a bit different from the base NG, but ever since the beginning it forces you to be cautious and to focus. Now I'm not hating on DS3's NG+ since I enjoyed it a lot and it's not bad at all, but there was little to no pressure until you got further in. Here in DS2 I was level 184 when I started Ng+ today and got my ass beat by the enemies at the beginning because I thought it would be the same as in NG. The amount of pressure was really high and I loved it. Then Duke's Freja, the way she attacks you on the bridge is really cool too. I didn't expect that at all. I'll have to uncover even more as I go through the game further again but so far I'm amazed by the way the devs made this game's NG+.

So due to the unfortunate loss of my xbox one, I've reverted to my 360 cause ds2 still exists. I went back to my characters and found one with a memory of 16 mil and forgot how much time I spent playing this game.

Im interested in knowing what soul memory do you guys stop at? When do you decide enoughs enough of lvling? For me I stop around 245 to 250, depending on my build.

Just thought of a run. But am I the first one? And would it be fun?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:35 PM PDT

It occurred to me that somebody who'd run through the game and collected pretty much all the armor and weapons could do a "Cosplay As the Enemy" run on subsequent playthroughs. Basically, you go through an area using (when possible) only the weapons and armor of the enemies in that area. (Applies to visible equipment only; you still have choice of rings, buffs, etc., unless you're feeling hardcore.)

So starting with the hollows in Things Betwixt, you'd wear the Imported Set and use your fists or a dagger. Then in Forest of Fallen Giants, you can switch to the Hollow Soldier Set and fight as they do; either sword only, halberd only, spear and shield, or estoc and shield. Old Ironclad Armor and whatever hammer that is vs. Old Ironclad Soldiers, and so on through the game. Heide armor and weapons vs them, Alonne regular or Captain armor and Blacksteel Katana vs them, etc.

I say when possible because there aren't always matches, so do whatever you want then. Though if you feel like fighting the Ogres naked and fists only, go for it. Also, if matching each individual opponent is too tedious for you, choose one related gear for the area instead. Fun above all.

This could add some interesting challenge for the bosses especially. Fighting Lost Sinner equipped with the Penal Set and his own self-harming sword. Looking Glass Knight with his armor set, the King's Mirror Shield and the Thorned Greatsword. The Smelter Demons with that armor and their swords (or better yet, each other's).

And of course, Fume Knight with his armor and dual-wielding his two swords, switching to only the UGS when he goes to phase 2 (bonus points for fire-infusing yours also). And optionally, face him wearing his own armor and Velstadt's Helm for the high quality smack talk.

So, would this actually work, or is it an idea that sounds better in theory than it would be in practice?

Are you able to set every attribute to level 30 during your second play through?

I have a quality build and am working through my second play through (Just finished the skeleton lords). I would like to use some miracles like sunlight blade and maybe some hexes like dark weapon. I'd also like to mess around a bit with pyromancy/soul spears/ lightening spears. I just don't want to rely on it exclusively.

People coming from ds3 first need to do their homework!!

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 09:54 AM PDT

I see sooooo many people running this game for the first time, playing for a couple hours, then crying because of how hard it is, how they can't do this or that.. you name it. If this is your first time playing through ds2 and you're on Xbox hit me up I'll run with ya. For the rest of you, do your homework!!! Read up on the mechanics. Read how damage scales, read how agility works, read how adaptability works, read how poise works. Learn what powerstance combos have unique properties (there are tons). Try EVERY weapon!!! There are so many hidden gems in this game. Pro tip- always have a bandit axe/infantry axe on hand- it's simply one of the best weapons in game with very low stat requirements. Flynn's ring and the clutch rings are amazing in this game unlike their nerfed versions in ds3. Also critical damage numbers are NOT listed anywhere in game, you'll need to look online for those numbers, however we can see poise damage and counter damage. And many new people don't seem to realize that you can in fact riposte an enemy on 3 different occasions: after a guard break, after a parry- wait for them to fall to The floor, OR you can perform a standing riposte (which will do about 100-200 extra dmg depending on weapon ofc.) Some weapons have sweet spots. They are amazing. Roaring halberd is one of the best weapons in the game as well for damage. There is so much more, which makes my point for me again- you need to read up on the mechanics in this game- they are a lot different and even veteran players may learn some new things!
