Just got to the DLC and... wow

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 12:32 PM PDT

First of all I have absolutely loved my first play through of DS2. Up there with the best of the Fromsoft titles IMO. Playing on XB. I'm currently trying to take on Elana the Squalid Queen and have used up all of my human effigies on the summons. The difficulty jump from the base game to the DLC has been a challenge!! I'm hoping you might be able to provide some advice or words of wisdom for taking on Elana and the rest of the DLC. Was able to do co-op once in DLC so far but no luck with co-op on bosses. Been working with a cleric build but can respec, let me know if you have any suggestions in that regard:

Lightning dragon slayers crescent axe +5 Lightning disc chime +10

    Vigor 26 Endurance 26 Vitality 18 Attunement 26 Strength 28 Dexterity 14 Adaptability 18 Intelligence 4 Faith 50

Thank for your help fellow undead!!

    Darksouls is like....

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 07:29 AM PDT

My friend who hasn't gotten into Souls wanted to know what they were like, And I found myself amused comparing it to other games. What I ultimately told them, because they played Undertale, is that it is like going through the tutorial with Tauriel, and then immediately fighting Sans in Genocide, which probably scared them off immediately, lol.

If you were to compare Souls to any other game, how would you do it?

    I can almost taste it

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 02:11 PM PDT

I have 10 items to get until my platinum, 2 of them being things that I could have gotten in NG but I was stupid and released Navlaan =( 1 being the sunbros grind and the other 7 having to wait until NG+ and NG+2 (I could technically get them in NG but I suck at PvP and I could get to Drangleic Castle in NG+2 before I could come close to getting the necessary wins for to get to rank 3 in the Blood covenant.)

I can almost taste the final platinum I need in the trilogy

White silhouettes in Vendrick's boss arena sky

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 05:39 PM PDT

In Vendrick's boss arena, there are this very omnious white shapes in the sky (greater detail here).

In fact, his whole arena is very enigmatic, there are these statues that surround the main arena, it always seemed to me that they were judging you in some way. But anyway, what is curious is that these same white sillhouetes don't appear in the sky when you go to Vendrick's memory!

Now, I always like to interpret things like that as lore-oriented decisions (although you could make the argument that it was just a general overlook by the devs). The first time I stumbled upon it, I was amazed and always thought that it was something along the lines of the Eldritch Truth of Bloodborne. I mean, the game constantly reminds us that what happened there was that Vendrick "peered at the essence of the soul" and we all don't EXACTLY know what that mens, but I like to think that Vendrick became mad (same way as all the people who discover the Eldritch Truth in BB) towards the hopelessness of the curse and regretting his actions of the past regarding himself as a fool trying to combat the curse and postpone the inevitable. Any thoughts?

    Ultimate Melee Range Testing

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 07:42 PM PDT

I'm a big spear fan. Been using them since DS1, and while replaying DS2 recently I couldn't help myself from going with a Santier's build for most of the run. Originally I liked them for being able to turtle poke, although I don't generally do that anymore (obviously not with Santiers), because it drastically limits the other, more exciting benefit of them: the range. I've always taken it for granted that spears gave the best range, or at least the best range and speed.

But I like analyzing things, so I've been testing out spears, as well as other weapons, to see how they compare range-wise. Specifically, my testing methodology has been to use small table against the wall next to the servants quarters bonfire, and trying to hit it from as far away as possible (then warping out and back to reset). The tiles on the floor work as a decent estimation of distance.

Here's been a few of the takeaways:

-Weapons don't really have range so much as specific attacks have range. For an extreme example, helix halberd's R1 has awful range, but the R2 has huge range. So it's necessary to test different moves to find the best range. Heavy attacks often had longer range than light attacks. Of course projectile attacks like ice rapier heavy attack, thorned sword heavy attack had to be excluded from consideration.

-There are 2 measures of the range of an attack - how far away were you when the attack started, and how far away were you when the attack ended. For an extreme example, Pate's Spear's R2 has enormous range in terms of where the attack starts, but the ending position is relatively normal for a spear-class weapon. This forces the consideration of what range is being targeted, and how much other factors like speed and locked-in-ness (leading to exploitability and potential cascading failure) should be considered when choosing a weapon.

-While spears did have some of the longer ranges in terms of starting position, what they have more than most other weapons (say, ultra greatswords) is that they tended to finish the move at a much great range - that is to say, they don't push you very far forward.

-Ranges mostly seemed to cap out around the same place for many attacks (as far as starting position) - specifically, a little less than 7 tiles away from the wall. This was true for longer spear attacks, halberds including helix, whips, puzzling stone sword, longer greatsword and UGS heavy stabs. There might be some small variations but from what I could tell, many of them were basically the same.

-The main advantage spears seemed to have relative to others was the faster attack speed, but this is less true for heavy attacks which usually had the best range. They did generally have good, like the best best, overall range and speed between their attacks, though.

I tested most of the reasonable weapons I have on my current character (which is most of them). If anyone else is curious about this, and finds any weapons with particularly long range, I'd love to hear about them.

Run trough all the maps 6 more times or use Bonfire Ascetic instead ?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 10:53 AM PDT

So, I'm on NG+, bored and thinking about challenging all the bosses on NG+7 but I really don't feel like running trough all the maps 6 more times. "Speedrun" 5 times then unlock all the maps again on last restart doesn't look that exciting either.

So I'm considering farming and using Ascetics to just rise bonfire difficulty, but as from what I heard, each NG+ incerases slightly SM ranges for co-op and pvp, but it won't work after using ascetics.

Is it true that online gameplay is different the higher NG your character is on, or it's not completelly true ?

    Frigid Outskirts

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 06:22 PM PDT

I've always been interested in the dark souls trilogy and always wanted to play it. About 2 months ago, I managed to get the entire trilogy on an amazing sale. I played through dark souls 1 and loved it, I can see why this game gets so much praise. A little clunky, sure, but still an enjoyable game. I beat it, Platinumed it, and moved on to dark souls 2. So far, I've very much had a blast with this game. Do I have problems with it? Of course, but not enough to make me dislike this game at all. I haven't beaten dark souls 2 yet, but I'd figure I beat the DLCs first just so that the final boss can be the last thing I do in the game. All the 3 DLCs are extremely fun as well! Except for one area...

Frigid Outskirts. Seriously, what the hell is this area? It's just a big flat area with not much to see. Speaking of not being able to see, the freaking wind makes this area just simply suck. And then there's the horse shit things. These guys are the bane of my existence. No matter what I do, I'm always being slammed the ground by these bastards I don't even know where I'm going, I'm just waiting for the wind to stop to see if I'm even moving in the right direction. I died 15 times to this area, and I haven't even reached the boss yet, so I decided to look it up: who is the boss of this area? Oh, it's aava, but reskinned, great. This area just sucks. Cave of the dead and Iron passage were also bad, but at the very least I can make it to the boss. I'm 6 minutes in, and I'm still trying to find the right way. Even with summons (something I never do) this area is a nightmare. I haven't looked it up yet, but is the area/boss necessary to platinum Dark souls 2? I hate to say this as someone who likes to beat every boss in a game before moving on, but I am willing to skip this area if I don't need to do it, that's how much this area has frustrated me.

Does the Sanctum Crossbow and Repeating Crossbow Special attack scale with reinforcing?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 12:29 AM PDT

Going for Sanctum Crossbow Special attack only run. I know it scales with dark and infusing it with dark is pretty good but do I get more dark damage if I reinforce them all the way? Or is that just a waste of titanite?

    Welcome to r/DarkSouls2

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 01:34 AM PDT

Let me preface this with the fact that many people think game bad, but I think game good. I also have a qualified opinion, for I beat the Fume Knight. Now there are many wonderful posts on this subreddit.

How about a post about this game being actually good and not bad? After all, it has powerstacning! Speaking of, this game has amazing build diversity! I did playthroughs with the mace, the rapier, and the greatsword! The possibilities are endless! On that note, want to read an insane ramble about how ADP is good for build diversity? Later I'm gonna defend durability somehow. Ah but this game can be frustrating, I hope there's a post about Shrine of Amana, Blue Smelter Demon, The Frigid Outskirts, or maybe something else. Oh yeah, I got invaded the other day! Did I get killed, hacked, helped, who knows! Well, I hope you enjoy the subreddit, I'm going to relax in Majula (best hub) with the Emerald Herald (best girl) and rest at the bonfire until she does her kicking animation.

Jokes aside, I love this subreddit and I'm glad it is still kicking despite the game's reputation. Now lets get photo posts...
