7 years of souls and sobriety

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 09:10 PM PDT

I celebrated 7 years clean and sober today. When I got out of rehab, I picked up my ignored copy of dark souls. I wanted to play a game i didn't play stoned. I started it up, and promised to beat the asylum demon, and at least ONE other boss. If I didn't like it then, I'd give it away and know it wasn't for me.

Here I am. 7 years later. I still play regularly. I got a dark sign tattoo to celebrate 5 years. Still clean and sober.

As I got more I to souls, the lore spoke to me. And as I got frustrated, other players were there to help.

I am not saying I wouldn't be sober without you guys, but I am happier I have this in my life.

So thank you. To those that dropped summon signs all throughout. To those that talked lore on other posts and Vaati's discord. To the 3 people who helped me get past Fume knight the only 3 times I've passed him, and even you jerks that invaded me, making the woods SUCH a pain. Oh, except whoever was invading me in Anor Londo and helping those archers. Seriously dude, what the fuck?!?!?!? But to everyone else, thank you.

I know people correlate the games to what's going on in thier lives, but for me that's addiction. And the relentless pursuit of an apparent gain that only damages the world around you, and inevitably leads to your doom. That was me. Ramming my head again and again against a problem, until someone who's been thru it stopped to help another person struggling. I feel that.

In life, you need to stop and specifically check to find those summon signs for help. It's easy to run by, feeling hollow, and think it's hopeless, because you don't know there is help right there. Reach out, it's OK. You don't have to "Get Gud" those idiots don't know what they're talking about.

Don't give up skeleton. Don't you dare go hollow.

I just realized recently that I’ve been playing Dark Souls 1 for close to half of my lifetime (years, on and off)

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 12:57 AM PDT

I'm 17 now, I started playing when I was around 9-10 and fell in live with it since. That means that almost half of my life in years while playing on and off has been contributed to this game. It's literally a part of me. Some people ask me how tf I've been playing the same game for this long. And tbh, I really don't know.

Drunkenly reading the infamous early review of Dark souls.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 03:18 AM PDT

There is a surprising amount to learn from reading the madness that is the infamous early review of dark souls (See wayback machine or other reddit link). I embarked to record it as a little segment on my regular podcast but got engulfed with the who notion of it. In reading it i reconnected with what i found interesting about Dark Souls in the first place and why it is a landmark game.
this is something i have forgotten since every Journo and his mum prattles on like they always knew it was a pure gold masterpiece, never once admitting that they were like this reviewer.

This could be important now more than ever as websites like IGN are going back and "updating" reviews to match the current zeit geist on review of Demons souls and the like.

episode is here in case you wanted to hear my long island ice tea addled mind muddle through the madness:

    Good weapon for blighttown?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 12:51 AM PDT

I've been using the drake sword and just defeated the gaping dragon. This is my first play through of Dark Souls and I chose the knight class so I have about 20 endurance, 18 vitality, 19 strength and 18 dexterity. I've been thinking of using the bastard sword or zwei hander. Any tips?

    Stone Greatshield Fashion?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 02:38 AM PDT

Hands down, my favourite thing about DS is dressing up. For the life of me though, I can't figure out a set-up that looks good with Stone Greatshield and my precious Great Club (Great Club Club 4 life!)

    Any suggestions?

I find using a shield far more enjoyable than dodging

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 12:41 PM PDT

Easily my favorite game of all time.

My first playthough, I wore heavy ass armor and carried a huge ass shield. Every fight was a struggle, every move mattered, timing my blocks and managing my stamina was important. Also I looked bad ass and felt like an absolute warrior.

Then I started reading the posts and comments:

    Blocking is ineffective

    Shields are a crutch

    Rolling is optimal

So I decided to do a second playthrough with lighter armor and no shield. I'm pretty far, I'm on my way to fight Seath The Scaleless, and to me, it just isn't as fun or bad ass as tanking some giant creature's attacks. I don't feel cool rolling away or timing the i-frames. I want to fight these things, and the fight is what makes this game so adventerous but also so dangerous.

Please tell me I'm not alone in this.

Probably fair to note that I don't care about PVP.

Being A Sunbro In A Dead Server

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 09:49 PM PDT

So I buy the original Ps3 version of the Dark Souls. (Dont ask why.)

I have already played all and finished most of the other games except this one.

So, I wanted to build a Faith/Strenght build cuz I love spears and l love lightning. But as you know, in order to get those miracles; I need to do some online objectives. But as you expected Ps3 servers are half dead at the point.

So is it logic to build up a character to mostly use lightning attacks at long range? Should I shift my class? Or the servers are not that dead, yet you say? Can I find someone at least enough to rank up at the Sunbro Covenant?

    Going hollow...

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 09:08 AM PDT

I've never known a game like dark souls for inducing so much emotion in players. Rage when you can't beat a boss and elation when you finally do. And I've had times where I'm doing the same stupid run to a boss, over and over, because I died again. It made me think that in those moments we're like hollows, doing the same movements repeatedly and kind of joylessly, until we eventually win- or quit. When we beat the boss, we restore our humanity and rejoin the human race.

What is it Gough says? "Exhilaration, pride, hatred, rage… The dragons teased out our dearest emotions."

    Knight's honor achievement question

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 09:56 PM PDT

For the Knight's Honor achievement, do all the weapons have to be accumulated across the same save file or can it be across multiple ones? I guess the same would apply to the sorcery achievement, miracles, etc

Omfg, im trying to summon solaire for the O&S fight and keep getting pvpd

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 09:53 PM PDT

Ive tried to get to the fog gate 5 TIMES and got invaded 5 TIMES IN A ROW. Like its annoying. I got invaded by the same guy twice too. Im doing a challenge, im not sure if its been done before but i call it the Solaire Challenge, Pyromancy, magic and miracles are allowed, NPC only summons. You can only use solaire's armor, shield and sword. Thats hard enough cause his sword sucks, and on top of that im in NG+ and being invaded 5 times in a row. Its just annoying, im never invaded then suddenly 5 times in a row, like seriously?

    Hellkite Dragon

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 07:24 PM PDT

I avoided the dragon thinking it was a trap and ended up in the undead parish. I'm guessing the dragon guards the way to the bell? Is the dragon an awful fight?

And I swear it's telling me that somewhere in this series there's a weapon called "muramasa" and I know there isn't one because I looked it up but I swear my brain is telling me it's real. Help. And no, I'm not getting it confused with Murakamo. AAAAA

    Pinwheel skeletons are annoying af

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 09:25 PM PDT

I was in the catacombs and got to Vamos the blacksmith. Everything was cool until the Pinwheel skeletons came strolling, got near the blacksmith, so naturally i had to kill them. Did a jumping attack, triggered the blacksmith accidentally. He had to die. RIP. Can i still get fire weapons or is that off the table.
