Dark Souls 2 isnt as bad as I thought it was, its actually pretty damn good.

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 05:56 AM PDT

tldr - dark souls 2 is unique and good, not bad.

I've always looked down at DS2 as the worst in the series and not worth my time, mostly due to the community's outlook on the game. I tried playing it once before about a year ago and hated it, I felt like it was too clunky and non refined. My biggest gripe being the copy and paste mobs of enemies. I got to the Forest of Giants and stopped playing, I uninstalled and said I would never play it again. Recently, I got platinum trophies for Dark Souls Remastered and Dark Souls 3, as well as beaten Demons Souls and Bloodborne. Instead of continuing to platinum the other two, i decided to try Dark Souls 2 again, and I'm glad I did. At first, it still did feel a bit clunky, but after playing for a while longer I got used to it. I've actually been really enjoying my playthrough. Sure, there's no connection to Gwyn or The first flame, but Dark Souls 2 really does have its own charm. Discovering new items as well as finding items referenced from DS1, and items that were added to DS3. Finding the Crow Demon NPC in Brightstone Cove that was originally an enemy in Painted World in DS1 was really cool to me (I still haven't found where her "home" is). Discovering dark sorceries were originally called Hexes was also really cool, I kind of wish this would have carried into DS3. Im just got to Shrine of Amana and can't wait to continue.

Got Bored Performed Systemic Analysis of DS2 Bosses: Conclusions

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 04:59 PM PDT

After 3 years of playing DS 2 sotfs I finally did a full 41 boss run.

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 02:52 AM PDT

    Just wanted to share this.

I made the decision last week to run every Dark Souls game and beat all of their bosses. I just wrapped up DS2 and I have never felt more accomplished about a game.

I've beaten DS 2 many times before. Never though did I muster up the will to attempt to take out all 41 bosses. I would always skip the extra dlc bosses or the harder base game ones because I got frustrated with mechanics, run ups, faulty hitboxes, etc. The last playthrough I did stopped at Aava. I suck at Aava real bad. When I finally killed Aava today it felt great. I finally had made it past the one point that I never thought I would get past.

Some bosses felt more like a triumph over bullshit than the bosses themselves. Darklurker was one of those. Encountered a glitch where it's clone stayed alive even though the boss had been killed. Took 9 more tries but I finally got that sucker down on my last effigy. I was still happy to have gotten it done.

The moment after the screen faded to black and the credits music played I just sat back in disbelief. I had done it. Every boss done. Sent to the grave. Not just in Dark Souls 2, but every Dark Souls. DS2 was the one roadblock in that accomplishment.

I start DS 3 all bosses tomorrow and I cant wait. I know the second I hear the Ringed City Epilogue Im going to shed some tears.

Shoutouts to Blue Kool-Aid and Darklurker for making me wake up my roommates in fits of anger. And shoutouts to all the players out there keeping this wonderful series alive.

    Dont you dare go hollow

Arsenal of the Awful: Thief Dagger

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 06:37 PM PDT

What even is the Thief Dagger? Well, you probably know it as that one trash weapon dropped by those hunters in Huntsman's Copse with shit durability and scaling, but you also probably didn't notice a particularly interesting quality about it that's made to compensate.

This thing has around 50% more base damage than most other daggers, in fact having slightly higher base damage than even the Royal Dirk at a whopping 158 when max upgraded compared to the Royal Dirk's 150, and Black Memestone Dagger's 140. And combining this is its hilariously low stat requirements, having a massive TWO Strength and SEVEN Dex requirement. Even Spongebob with his noodly-armed, barely-able-to-deadlift-fucking-marshmellows ass can wield this thing.

The catch, though? It's entire scaling is a pathetic E in Strength with half the durability of other daggers at a pathetic 30. It's own item description even shits on it, saying that it's crappily made with "not much bite".

Well fuck whoever wrote that because its high (for a dagger) base damage means that infusions are STRONK on this mofo and have a nasty ass bite, especially when powerstanced thanks to its absurdly low requirements having almost no stat investment needed for elemental casting pew pew shooters to abuse. Hell, this is one of the few weapons that benefits from ENCHANTED infusion: it's that infusion compatible. You're a mage with almost no quality stats? Pack 2 of these and slash like a maniac when your pew pew cheese isn't working because you're opponent isn't stupid enough to not dodge them.

After some late dagger patches and reworks, the Thief Dagger even became the best backstab and ripose weapon at hilariously tiny requirements when infused, becoming a pocket instant-killer for parry gods because Shadow Dagger is a stat hungry bitch and Umbral Dagger is a picky little prick who only has backstab damage bonus with no riposte bonus.

But, i can't parry for shit, so i decided to use the Thief Dagger a much more absurd, surprisingly effective way that somehow works incredibly well, with tons of dumb fun to be had.

Because those nonexistant stat requirements is where these shoddily made little knives shine: they are the ultimate assassin Twink weapon. But to explain why this is the case, we also must explain how DkS2 twinking works since its very different than DkS1 and DkS3 twinking.

Matchmaking is based on the stupid, shitty Soul Memory system, being your total accumulated souls, and when Aldia graciously reworked the game and slipped in the Agape Ring into Straid's petrified pocket, proper matchmaking tiers were finally cemented. At the game's popularity's near end, so fuck me was that some terrible goddamn timing. But what the Agape Ring also did aside from let people lock themselves into 1-3million SM tiers for consistent matchmaking that avoided all the ultra-sweaty havelbitch tryhards who jack off furiously at winning effortlessly 1-sided matches is allow for twinks.

Contrary to what some people may claim, having only 30k SM is NOT ideal for twinking since you don't really see any variance and are stuck invading at Forest of Fallen Giants, 1-2 shotting noobs with either a Key to the Embedded (imagine going all the way past Shrine of Amana in a SL30 just to harass noobs lol) or a Raw infused Bluemoon Greatsword (btw, very underrated and hilariously strong). You go somewhere between 100k-300k SM since noobs constantly waste souls buying lifegems from Melentia whose just setting them up for us invaders, gear that they won't use, spells that they won't use, and levels into stats that aren't as useful as they think, bloating their SM while remaining very weak. Noobs tend to farm souls a lot to fuel this self-defeating cycle, neglecting leveling which would serve them much better instead but they don't yet realize this.

This is where the Thief Daggers shine, because in higher SM PvP, you're honestly much better off wielding magic infused Retainer's Short Swords since those deal like twice the damage but are a bitch to get in comparison. Just infuse the Thief Daggers with literally anything not Mundane, slap on Stone Ring, upgrade them to at least +7 or +8, and then powerstance for massive DPS for such a low level. The 30 durability doesn't matter because you'll kill people so quickly.

I personally ran a Sorcerer just to have as low Str/Dex stats physically possible, and slotted in Chameleon to hide and wait for people to run by to then backstab while they're busy fighting mobs. Works especially well in Huntsman's Copse in that one dark ass room with the HERE'S JOHNNY door breaking dude, hiding as a cage in the darkness only to then backstab then engage with glorified powerstanced prison shivs. Because these things are actually pretty absurd with elemental infusion (yeah, tried Enchanted with RoB+Flynn but couldn't slot in Stone Ring without giving up my precious Cloranthy so i ditched that for Magic infusion), all thanks to its high base damage which means that elemental infusions are 50% stronger on it than most other daggers, but you can powerstance at a fraction of the needed stats of the stronger, comparable base damage daggers.

This literal trash knife gets 110 physical and elemental at +10 with super fast dagger swing DPS, and because you need so little Str/Dex, you can pump stats into elemental scaling while still being able to powerstance at a very, very low SM. So low that i was even able to have 35 Int and packed a slightly spiced down Soul Spear to kill phantoms in my Chameleon antics just to scare the shit out of phantom reliant noobs who panic at having to 1v1 me wielding a pair of scrap stabbers. Considering the number of plug pulling that caused, i think i succeeded in that effort.

Which of course also highlights the downside of this weapon; it's a fucking dagger so by default you're not going to be seriously using it as a mid-high SM combat tool. Magic infused Retainer's Toothpicks are much, much better for that and still not exactly good for this purpose either with their ass reach. The bigger, stronger, OP, longer reaching, and bullshit weapons will just simply out-trade your ass. Now, granted, the Thief Dagger does actually have some decent reach for a dagger, but that's not saying much because daggers are daggers.

But still, it's gameplay niche is 2-fold in this perspective. On mid-high SM, you can slot it away as your parry/riposte nuke since it's higher base damage's big elemental numbers let you show off them parry god antics that i can't do, or in low SM use it as a slasher main weapon to wreak havoc and do cheeky assassination antics with. The piss low wielding requirements and high base damage practically beg for this to be an infused powerstanced weapon with some of the best stat efficiency in this regard.

And for PvE, it's surprisingly serviceable since you save so much stats to pump into non Str/Dex that you can mix up with spells, get some chonky asf hp, a long-ass stamina bar, or go all-in on the elemental scaling with the Repair sorcery on hand because for some reason Lenigrast and McDuff refuse to reforge these into properly durable weapons (or maybe its power comes from being shittily made...hmm...).

Either way, if you feel like twinking but don't want to go through absurd chunks of the game self-gimped for the twink weaponry, just stroll on down to the Copse to beat the shit out of those thieves like they owe you money until they give up 2 of their knives that are literally made of scrap metal, sticks, and twine (seriously, look at these up close and that's what they are). You can get a fun and unique method of twinking, get access to spells with said twink, and can be an absolute madman in other stupid ways like making them Raw and investing all you've got into Vigor, Vit, and armor upgrades to be a fat armored blob that noobs can't kill while being able to shank them pretty efficiently. It's just as stupid and fun as it sounds. You can even do something like a low level Sacred Oath build with 2 of these Lightning infused thanks to good old Southern Ritual Band +1 and Flynn as an example of how many stats you save to use while retaining respectable DPS.

Would highly recommend messing around with because of the stupid shit you can do with all those spare levels at low SM tiers. It's funny turning the game into Metal Gear, stalking people as a box hiding behind trees and bushes just to shank them or DPS rush them in a good ambush. They're very easy to obtain, very easy to wield, and very easy to let your imagination go wild with. Just make sure they don't break while using.

I also want to say that you all of you who got killed my some guy in a bird mask popping out of nowhere with a Soul Spear or backstab in Copse, Bellfry Luna, Sinner's Rise, or Earthen Peak...that was probably me. And i am not sorry because most of you swung at the magic spinning box first instead of have some fun with it.

Which makes me wonder if other weapons with descriptions calling them worthless trash are actually secretly the chad weapons who like being humble. Like the Reinforced Club; will it retain its old legacy of the favorite DkS1 SL1 run weapon, or is it truly trash?

I really wanted to share my accomplishment here

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 01:10 AM PDT

So I was wrapping up Heide's Tower before heading to No Man's Wharf, and I knew I had the dragon area left to finish

First time I saw it breath flames I dipped because I remember the undead burg bridge and this path seemed too long to run down

No I was not able to "try ranged battle"

So I hoped for the best this time around and ran up and was very surprised to be alive and at his feet

I wanted to see if his tail would come off but it was too far away and I was already nervous from being alive still, so I just played it safe and dodged his feet attack. Luckily predicted his fire attack similar to Nameless King's Dragon when it breaths down, and got out with taking a hit

Then I decided to see if it was a boss or a new area past the fog. I was prepared to homeward bone out of the boss's attacks looked pretty ridiculous but then I realized it was fucking Ornstein! Definitely accepted the challenge and dodged him perfectly as well. He caught me once on the backhand swing of his 3 swing combo

I'm just now calling down from nervousness and excitement. Really wanted to share this moment with people who can actually relate

    Drangleic's original name

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 10:15 AM PDT

OK, so at numerous points in the game you get these little hints alluding to Drangleic being a name posthumously given to the land no longer after its demise. And IIRC after you un-petrify Straid in Lost Bastille he flat out just says "Drangleic? Is that what they call it these days?"

But then at the same time, when you have a little chat inside Vendrick's memories he explicitly states that he is the king of Drangleic. So is there a reason for that or is this just a mishap by the writers?

Tips for White Sign placement / being summoned for COOP?

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 09:46 AM PDT

I'm having trouble finding places to put my white sign soapstone down and get summoned. I'm in the sun covenant, and placed it next to fog gates and bonfires, I'm currently idling around the Ancient Dragon hoping I can get summoned. I understand the community isn't necessarily the most active considering the age, and most people replaying probably would prefer playing solo, but I think the Coop mechanics are fun and I'd love to make someone's day by helping them out. I'm 2.2m soul memory, and looked at the tiers for summoning, but mostly am around bosses I just finished. I looked up some tips on where to place my soapstone but couldn't really find any good tips or modern advice. I know questions aren't really interesting or the best content, but I'd appreciate some help. Hope everyone's enjoying their quarantine.

After years of owning SOTFS on my PS4, 2 weeks ago I finally sat down and said “I’m beating this fucking game.”

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 02:14 PM PDT

And I did! And I also loved it, to my own surprise. I'm currently drudging my way through the DLC's and an eager to start NG+, but I must wait, and train for the tough road ahead.

Some things I'd like to touch on; the level design, while varied and great, can get confusing at times, there are multiple bonfires I never found, despite my best efforts to do so. I like how Majula serves as a hub area, branching off to the four primal bonfires, but what I didn't like was, after light said fires, saying to myself 'How the fuck do I get to Dranglaeic? (I know I spelt that wrong). So I had to look it up online, which is fine. It was a great area, Shrine of Amana however can FUCK all the way off. Other than that, I hate the delay between attacking and being able to anything after it. Estus is useless, I didn't use it once during my whole run, does that make me a lifegem bitch? Yeah, it does, and I don't care, because I enjoyed this game that sooooo many people shit on outside of memeing. Like I said, I'm eager to go into NG+ where I don't kill every NPC (I know I'm a bastard) and find out all the stuff I missed.

I also want to thank this community, I've been read so many posts helping people out, giving people direction, etc. and it has been a huge help for me to enjoy this game, so thank you.

    Shrine of Amana

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 07:42 PM PDT

To be honest, i hear a lot of talk about shrine of amana being the worst area. I was irritated at first, but once i just took it slow and picked off the spellcasters with a bow, it was underwhelming compared to how much it was talked up, though it definitely still seemed like lazy design. Anyone else's opinions?

Questions about No Death and/or No Bonfire runs

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 12:24 PM PDT

    1. If you are to choose one, which is harder?

    2. Does a no bonfire run mean every time you die, you start back in the beginning of the game? Or do you go to Majula after you've defeated one of the Big 4?

    3. Is the reward for No Bonfire really an invisible RH weapon ring? (LH for no death?)

    4. Any tips on completing one or both of these Herculean tasks?

Bonus question: Not that I would ever feel good about doing this, but couldn't you just backup a save periodically? I ask this because I wonder how many people, especially on PC, have received the overpowered rewards by doing it this way.

    EDIT: grammar

The Triangle of Combat and the Importance of Hybridization

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 09:21 PM PDT

I preface this by saying that my realm of experience is in PvE. Apply any of this to PvP with a grain of salt.

When I was a little lass, I played Runescape. It probably didn't invent the Triangle of Combat, but it introduced me to the concept. The triangle goes as follows:

A meleer beats an archer, an archer beats a mage, and a mage beats a meleer.

While Runescape coded this into the resistances of armor to melee, ranged, and magic damage, I have determined that, in Dark Souls, including this title, the Triangle of Combat holds true in a more holistic sense. And, like in Runescape, it's not a hard-and-fast rule, of course, especially when assessing single-target encounters.

Why does the warrior slay the archer? Well, the archer struggles to deal damage. Most warriors wear armor that resists physical damage, as they expect to take the most damage from other physical-dealing meleers. Thus, the archer needs special arrows to do real damage. Furthermore, many warriors carry shields, which basically no-sell arrows that they block. This allows the warrior to survive getting into melee range with the archer, where a dedicated archer will struggle to loose arrows.

Why does the archer slay the mage? Well, the archer doesn't need to lock on to shoot the mage and can attack from farther away. The archer can also shoot a lot faster, interrupting the mage, especially if the mage is clad in "mage-appropriate attire" (read: low poise, low physical defense).

Why does the mage slay the warrior? Well, back on the subject of armor, the warrior, prioritizing physical defense, neglects elemental defense, often on both armor and shield. Furthermore, the mage combines being able to do damage with a range advantage, as well as a suite of AoE/area denial spells that effectively force a warrior to get out of the mage's personal space or otherwise render the warrior unable to approach.

Now, playing smart, on one level, can be as simple as wearing more situationally-defensive armor. It's a first step, but in this game, of course, armor isn't everything, especially, if like me, you think fashion is superior to all else.

Changing your armor against every enemy isn't viable when you're fighting multiple types, though, is it? When you're fighting multiples, the advantages of your class against theirs are mitigated and their advantages over yours are heightened. The archer is safe from the warrior if the warrior's busy dealing with another warrior in the way or focused on a much-more-dangerous mage. The mage is safe from the archer if another archer is firing back or a warrior is rapidly closing the gap. The warrior is safe from the mage if another mage is using up the special effects budget in a distracting manner or an archer is interrupting the mage's spells.

Thus the real tip: hybridization. Carry one, if not both, of the other classes' weapons. The game is set up such that you can viably do this no matter your stats.

    Let's say you're a melee main.

Do you wanna dabble in archery? Archery is especially useful as a dex meleer, with poison and bleed arrows for inflicting those statuses as your best friends. Strength? Well, you might have better luck with one of the greatbows, where the bonus is that you have the power to knock enemies off of platforms and/or onto their asses, if you don't kill them outright. Neither? Well, an infusion can kill the scaling for raw damage, if that's what you need.

What about magery? Well, since you've probably been ignoring INT and FTH, how about some pyromancies? You'll have to drop a few levels into attunement, but at least you get additional agility out of it!

Let's say you're, bizarrely, an archery main.

Doubtless, you carry a sidearm. Probably better to make it a good dex sidearm.

    You could, also, try pyromancies.

    And of course, the mages.

You're really in luck if you wanna dabble in melee. Between infusions to replace the physical damage scaling on your melee weapon with damage that scales with your casting stats and the fact that your weapon enchant spells still work on infused weapons, you can easily make this jump.

SAme goes for bows. If you wanna shoot people, too, you can still kill the scaling on your bow with new damage.

Being able to switch between weapons on the fly in the middle of a fight, or just before cracking an ambush open, is essential to surviving some of the rougher fights that so many fools bash this game for. I think there's a--perhaps unintentional--significance to the fact that the new, important stat in DS2 is called "Adaptability". You're supposed to adapt. Shoot the switch that opens the door instead of banging your head against the wall until one of you gives up.

New Dark Souls Player Opinion on DS2 so far!

    Posted: 19 Sep 2020 09:56 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I am Aaron or as my viewers know me, A-A-RON. Yes as in the Key & Peele meme....made my life fun a work etc haha.

I recently completed my first ever blind run of Dark Souls 1 (PTD Edition) and have moved onto DS2 (Scholar). So far I am enjoying DS2 but I can't help but feel like it's weaker than DS1. For anyone wondering where I am, I have just beaten the Rotten (hated the area with the spitty statues btw) For some reason, the combat feels worse (despite being smoother) and the way DS2 throws multiple enemies at you at once is frustrating at times. I'd prefer one very well designed enemy over many weak enemies swarming you at once.

For example, Black Knights were amazing in DS1, I loved how they are tough to beat but you can figure them out and with a good run, you can beat them. I actually miss the black knights and wish DS2 had them or a similar enemy that would fit the lore of the game (not great with the lore btw but I know where BK's came from in DS1)

And what is with all the bosses with adds? I disliked Capra Demon and to some extent Nito in DS1 because of all the adds. And now it seems like adds are a normal thing in DS2. The Giant Rat boss is the worst of the lot so far. Annoying toxic adds that are hard to hit and a boss that is just a really crappy Sif fight. Freja wasn't too bad because her adds stay away from you if you have a torch. But seriously, I hated the spider section. Although that is because I hate spiders and found that part of the game very distressing.

And can someone explain why the game feels even less responsive than DS1 (especially with dodges?? You would think with 60FPS it would feel smoother but damn it feels worse. Might just be me though.

I am liking DS2 but can't help but feel more frustrated at it than I did with DS1. I feel like i've suffered a lot more unfair deaths than I did in DS1. But i like how the game is waaay prettier, I love the hub of Majula and I am actually a fan of how shields are as good as in DS1 so dodging is encouraged. maybe that is why the dodging feels worse? Maybe because I am doing it waaay more?

Anyway, I am going to finish DS2 and then onto DS3. I hope the sections I still have to complete are better than the game so far and look forward to seeing what I can find.

Oh and if anyone wants my stream link, you'll have to ask for it, I have been told off for posting my link recently so I don't want to bug people anymore than I already have haha!
