Holy F*ck Dark Souls subreddit still kicking?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:36 PM PDT

I am a hardcore Dark Souls player. I used to really get obsessed about Souls. One of the happiest moment in my life is when the news come Dark Souls finally get a PC port. I played a lot, farming a lot. Kalameet used to kick my ass for 3 hours straight when I am going for that sweet, juicy tail.

However, that was a really long time ago. I stop playing after multiple playthrough and many mods later, so I thought this subreddit will eventually slow down and become less active. However I just visit here and see many 1k upvoted posts. This subreddit still survive and remain active after all those years. I guess great game will always draw people in sniff sniff.

ps:- I freakin hope Dark Souls get real remaster in the near future. This game deserve a graphical overhaul. Of course, the atmosphere should remain the same, that is what make this game great in the first place.

I bought dark souls when it was first released. Nearly 10 years later, I've finally beaten it for the first time.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:17 AM PDT

I never thought I'd beat it. The first time I tried I was in high school and was used to easier and more guiding games like assassin's Creed. I saw Quelaag in the trailer and tried to rush for her, not understanding much about the mechanics or really understanding that the game would punish you for being in a place too early. I figured if I could make it there, I'd be ok. Big mistake. I got stuck in blighttown and was infuriated.

Years later, I bought the game on steam summer sale. I didn't realize how bad the PC port was but I got a controller so it was playable. A friend and I would often Skype as we played dark souls. He called and I minimized the window to accept the call. When I opened the game back up, I couldn't move. I had to click to reactivate the window. What does clicking do? Swing your weapon. Where was I? In front of Andrei. He tried to kill me and by the time I paid to repent my sins and I went back and turns out other NPCs killed him as he was chasing me. I was furious, but my friend said he could help me get items by dropping in co op. Well, we never got it to work before I was cursed by the frogs . I gave up.

January this year I decided to give it another go. I got stuck on the gaping dragon and noped out of the game for a few months because it freaked me out. But after I got past that dragon I moved along. After I beat Quelaag, I got my passion for the game restored and it was so addicting. I've improved so much and I feel like a huge accomplishment has been achieved. On top of that, I love the game and the lore. So much, that I'm starting DS3 soon (I'd rather save 2 to the end, but please let me know if you think I should go through 2 first. I just thing DS3 would be best since I want to understand more of the lore).

Sorry if this is a boring post for you all I just really wanted to share. When I first saw the trailer for this game back in high school I knew there was something special about it. I just never thought I'd be able to beat it. I'm so happy.

Unpopular Opinion: The Lava in Lost Izalith is visually perfect

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:54 PM PDT

I know this is going to get lambasted....but curious to see if anyone else agrees.

I just started DS around a month ago after loving Sekiro.

Something I had always heard, whether it was Demodcracy or Jim Sterling or Hbomberguy etc...."the lava in Lost Izalith is terrible." "How didnt they fix this in the remaster?" and "if you're on PC the lava re texture is mandatory."

I played through on steam first, with the above advice.

I loved the game and I'm a bit of an achievement whore so I decided to play through the PS3 version and the first time I stepped into the Demon Ruins I was blown away by the glow of the lava. I was playing in a dark room and I actually slightly averted my eyes. To most people this is an awful thing.....but I said out loud "why the hell didnt I play the PC version like this? This is awesome."

Its foreboding. Its not good. You're not supposed to like being in the Demon Ruins or Lost Izalith. They're inhospitable places. You're supposed to be leery and know, dont screw around here. This lava doesnt care about you and if you get in its way it will win 10 times out of 10.

I found that to be WAY more immersive than the darkness of Tomb of the Giants or the walkways of New Londo.

    Just a new player's thoughts.

edit notes: corrected misspelling of the word "slightly."

Completed my first 0 deaths run!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:19 PM PDT

I've been in self-isolation d/t Corona for the past few weeks, so I bought a controller and have finally tried out Dark Souls Remastered.

After 25 attempts, I have finally beaten Dark Souls with zero deaths! Perseverance pays off. I was ready to give up at around attempt 12, after I backstepped off an edge while talking to Snuggly the Crow. Some of you may have seen that post from earlier.

But, I went back at it, with a new character, and decided to start tracking my times on each death, and simply restart a run no matter what, no matter how stupid the death. It also meant I had to play in offline mode, cause I had too many deaths in other runs with freaking darkwraiths invading my world when I was level 6 and spamming me with Dark Bead. Thanks for that, guys.

Anyways, attached is a screenshot of my victory pose and a spreadsheet tracking my times.

    Perseverance pays off!

Good luck out there skeletons, and don't you dare go hollow.

    Killed by a vagrant

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:32 AM PDT

I'm playing my first faith build, trying to get the trophy for collecting all miracles. Sunlight spear is the last one I need. I've got 50 faith, Soul of Gwyn, all I have to do is get to Solaire in Anor Londo. I'm running up the buttress with the archers, dodging great arrows like it's my job, and the way is blocked by the first vagrant I've ever encountered. Needless to say, I was unceremoniously filled full of arrows.

    Beating the SL1 challenge

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 03:15 AM PDT

I posted last time of me beating the naked run Dark Souls. I said in that post that I'm going to attempt the SL1 run next. Happy to say, I managed to beat it today haha. Imo the naked run was a lot harder than the SL1 run hahaha. Shows how op pyromancy is. Maybe next time I'll do the SL1 without pyros hehe

    Good weapon?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 03:35 AM PDT

Just got to sens fortress. I think I might go for a dex build but could go for strength too. I've been using my drake sword but I heard it becomes useless at this point. (Also I started out as a cleric, so I have the mace. Is it worth upgrading past +5 and if so how much longer can I use it for?)

i really need to get better at this game

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:00 AM PDT

i just got invaded by a red phantom in anor londo. he was waiting for me near the sentinels in the chamber near the o&s bossfight. lured him up the stairs where i found an open place that could have been used as an arena, the one with the broken window leading to the dragon slayer bow. i was using the dragon tooth mostly for the meme but also because it had great poise breaking (that s how i call it, i think it s called staggering). fast forward 2 seconds i get backstabbed with a gargoyle halberd probably +10 and lose my whapping 2000 souls collected from silver knights. well done sir, tho i really need to get better

I come in search of fashionsouls

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:45 AM PDT

So I've finally decided to really sit down and play through DS1R, and I'm looking for some knightly fashionsouls. I'm still early in, just getting to anor londo, still in my knight's starter armour with a +10 claymore and +3 Astora straight sword. I've already kinda planned out my build and weapons I want to use, but I wanna start looking into all of the Available armour sets and set some goals there to look out for. I've already pretty much spoiled the entire dark souls series through speedruns and lore videos so don't feel bad on spoiling me or something, I just want to see some nice armour sets rather than looking through the wiki and googling them all :D

I've done it boys I've beat all of the games

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:03 PM PDT

I've finally done it, I've beaten all of the soulsbourne games. I hadn't beaten any at the beginning of the summer but I managed to beat all of them in a pretty good time. I really enjoyed playing. My favorite part of ds1 is easily anor Londo!

I’m not liking dark souls 3

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:00 AM PDT

Just a couple days ago I beat dark souls 1 for the very first time and it might of been the greatest experience I've had with a video game. I loved so much about the game. The level design was by far my favorite part, the game reminded me of old N64 games I used to play as a child. After reading a lot of negative reviews of the second game I decided to play the third next (I heard it doesn't matter story wise) and I must say I'm very disappointed so far. It seems to not have that aspect of the first game I loved so much and I'm not even sure if I could say why but it's been very underwhelming so far. Now I've only beat the third boss so far( the tree monster) but I'm really hoping the game gets better for me. Do other people feel the same? Or did I expect to much of something different?

    Just Finished the SoulsEkiro series

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:15 AM PDT

I finally did it y'all, from getting dark souls 1 at release, to falling in love and getting playing through each souls game even demon souls through some emulator magic! ( Just waiting on the bloodbourne PC port ;) ), finished DS3 with some jolly co-op, only person I've ever heard with a mic and I regretted it lol. That all being said every time I completed a game I came back to the same conclusion that DS1 is my all time favorite. Just wanted to spread the story, I've bought DS1 3 times and contemplating the switch next haha!!! That beinn said Sekiro just wow after finally gathering my thoughts after that boss fight Thank you for coming for my Solarie Talk

Wishing we could refight bosses without going into NG+

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:27 AM PDT

This may sound kind of crazy, but I wish there was a way to be able to go back and fight bosses without having to go into NG+ and fight all the way up to whatever boss you wish, or just accepting defeat and getting killed by the boss so you dont fully defeat it. (I hope that makes sense)

These thoughts are prompted by how much I love the Artorias fight in DSR and the likeness to his moveset in the second phase of the Abyss Watcher fight in DS3.

My first ever playthrough of DSR, I saved Artorias for as close to the end as possible and ended up spending a good 30 hours trying to fight him and getting my shit kicked because i lack the ability to git gud. (My first ever runthrough totaled 120 hours to finish) and I'm currently doing my first playthrough of DS3 and the Abyss Watchers was a boss I fought recently so its fresh in my mind. I'd love to go back and fight them again without having to go through the whole game again.

Does anyone else have these feelings?

(Note: I also mainly play offline and I understand I can always drop my summon sign in front of those boss fights, but it's just not the same in my opinion)
