A Week with the Fume Knight

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 07:34 AM PDT

I saw someone on here say the Fume Knight was so hard they needed 14 attempts to defeat him. If only.

I just spent a week, trying out multiple strategies, learning how to counter each specific manoeuver, practicing the phases separately. At one point literally watching a gameplay video clip on loop saying "roll" each time as they did the right thing. Grinding two levels and equipping the Simpleton's ring to eke out an extra i-Frame. And at the end of a week of trying, I have finally managed to get good enough to get it over the line once.

I unironically did a success baby fist clench at the end of it.

I just killed 1200 Stone Soldiers to figure out if they are the best way to farm Slabs

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 10:02 AM PDT

    And the result is...

    Not really, no.

Before I dive in, I do want to say that 1200 isn't a large enough dataset for me to be 100% certain in the results, and I intend to add more runs soon.

Spreadsheet here. All my information is there, including farming setup and method, but here are the highlights.

    Drop Info

In 120 runs, averaging ~43 seconds each and killing 1200 Stone Soldiers total, I got 59 Slabs.

    That works out to:

    • 13.973 Kills per minute
    • A Slab drop rate of 4.917%
    • 0.492 Slabs per run

And the number I did it all to find:

    0.687 Slabs-per-minute.

This places the Stone Soldier method solidly in second place behind the most time-efficient method I've tested so far: farming the second Crystal Lizard in the Dragon Aerie. That method comes in at .97 Slabs-per-minute, nearly 50% more then the Stone Soldiers.

    Equipment

    Weapon

    Dark Sacred Chime Hammer +5

    Rings

    Chloranthy +2

    Covetous Gold Serpent Ring +2

    Third Dragon Ring

Dark Clutch (wasn't necessary, but i didn't need anything else in the slot either.)

    Armor

    Symbol of Avarice

    Prisoner's Tatters

    Drakeblood Gauntlets

    Drakeblood Leggings

This is part of a larger project to find the best methods for farming the 3 limited materials: Twinkling Titanite, Petrified Dragon Bones, and Titanite Slabs.

The bulk of my testing is being done in the Dragon Aerie. I've done nearly 200 runs there so far, trying to find the best routes for these materials, but there's still a ways to go before I'll be ready to post anything definitive. I will say that some of the Aerie routes are giving almost 2 Twinkling Titanite and/or 2 Petrified Dragon Bones per-minute, which is promising.

In the meantime, the next alternative method on the slate is farming Shrine of Amana for Twinkling Titanite, to see how it stacks up against Aerie farming. You can expect that one to pop up in the next day or two.

Beat Darklurker, something exploded, I died.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:27 PM PDT

Finally defeated Darklurker after about a dozen or so tries. Something exploded immediately after the death that took me down too. When I went back to retrieve my souls, Darklurker respawned and I didn't get any credit for killing the damn thing. Now I have to do it all over again. Why does this game torture me so...

Happened to me while going to get the old iron key.

Pretty funny, hadn't seen something like this before. Also looked like I could sort of "guide" it by doing R1s.

    Just beaten the Flexile Sentry

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 08:02 AM PDT

Piece of cake. The way there was way harder than the fight itself. +4 Rapier, Gold resin buffed, 20 dex. (New dex build, but never fought it before) Attacks are easy to read, lots of time to strike. I only had to heal once. And I'm not even a pro. The fight was pretty easy, but don't get me wrong, it was enjoyable

I've beaten all of the soulsbourne games

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:07 PM PDT

I beat all of the soulsbourne games for the first time this summer and I loved every last bit of it! But I have to say ds2 was my favorite I played through it twice before I beat bloodborne. I had a lot of fun on my first playthrough but I ditched the shield on the second and had even more of a blast! My favorite part was dragon shrine and dragon Airie

I messed up. Not looking for answers, but here’s where I went wrong (spoilers within)

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:30 AM PDT

After defeating Vendrick I came back to his area to see if there was anything I missed. And found I could enter his memory!

After talking to him he said some shit about linking the fire and I was like hell no, that sounds stupid. Im going to end up like him if I do that.

So after exhausting all his dialogue options I punched him.

    "Foolish"

Well my bad, I just killed you, and now Im giving you a chance to be killed by me before I kill you in the future! He's the fool.

I'll find out what Im missing in the area next playthrough I guess

Please help me forma a dex weapon

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:04 PM PDT

Good morning friends, I am new to the community and I am really surprised and pleased with how active you are with the theme of dark souls ... Well, I am writing to see if anyone can give me advice on which dex weapons are good for PVP, since in the first game the katanas and especially the great scythe were op, but I understand that in 2 they are not so good. , I currently use the rapier but it seems very monotonous due to its poor set of movements, I really appreciate your advice and apologize in advance for my bad English .... Thank you

The first item you can pick up in the game

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 11:30 AM PDT

Is a rusted coin, which increases your luck. I feel like this is the developers telling every new player "good luck!" I love how much this game seems to speak directly to the player, especially in the beginning.

"Another undead has come to play"

"They all wind up here, all the ones like you."

I seem to throw myself into the world of Dark Souls driven by some unknown yearning, like a moth... drawn to a flame...

Defeated Fume Knight and Sir Alonne

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:28 AM PDT

I'm doing another playthough of DS2, and I opted for a Str/Fth build. My first playthough it took me about 200 tries to beat Fume Knight (no joke), and a lesser but still great amount to defeat Sir Alonne.

Since I started this playthough I've been trying to play more cautiously, get the bosses movements and avoid being greedy. And it payed off. I beat Fume Knight on my ~7th time, and Sir Alonne on my ~4th time. Also, my +10 Lightning Bastard Sword buffed with Sunlight Blade hits like a truck.

Now onto Smelter Demon...damn that boss run is annoying.

Are we 100% sure that the despawn mechanic requires 15 kills exactly?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 10:27 AM PDT

I just counted me killing every enemy in things Betwixt 12 times. NOT 15. After 12 they all disappeared/despawned forever.

Where did this 15 number come from? Is it even the correct number? Also, what if different enemies have a different number?

Edit: Just killed the black little crawly things at the very start of the game. Same number: 12 kills.

2nd edit: I saw a bunch of posts and such from a long time ago saying 15. Probably got me wrapped up in the idea that it was 15 kills. I guess I was wrong! But hey! 12 is much better than 15!!!

So... I fought against Fume Knight

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 08:38 PM PDT

So, I killed the Fume Knight.

    https://imgur.com/1SYwL7k

For now on... this is my favourite boss of the entire game and possibly of the entire series. It hits hard and has a lot of health, but he is not like other bosses or tough enemies in ds2 where that's their only difficulty. This boss is "git gud at my moveset or die... die a lot" and yes, I died, a lot... 11 times to be precise. At first, I was wearing full Drakeblood Armor and a Hood (it's a black hood, I forgot its name) but, after I died like 8 times I decided to take off all my armour and try to get him. I know that with fast weapons this boss is easier, but my pride wouldn't let me change my playstyle, so I was determined to kill him dual-wielding 2 Greatswords. The strategy and the whole fight was simple, hit once, not be greedy and roll at the precise moment towards his attacks. If he hit's me, I have to be ready to die (He hit me like 4 times on the last try but at the end, the healing window was really huge).

In the end, I realised that the fight it's simple, I died that many times because I sucked at dodging him, but yeah, when I learned how to dodge him, it wasn't thaat hard. So yes, the famous Fume Knight:

    It was hard? Yes.

    It was frustrating? Yes.

It was rewarding and extremely fun? Absolutely.

It was one of that bosses that after dying and dying I couldn't just quit the game without thinking "Oh fuck, I have to kill him, I know that I did this or that wrong, so if I try just another time...", it was really fun learning him, fighting him and dying at him. Really worth the time and I would love to fight him on NG+, prepare your ass fucker, I'm coming for ya.

    PS4 Platinum Trophy Hunt

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 07:25 AM PDT

Hey guys, I want to get the plat trophy and the only trophies I'm missing are the have all sorceries, hexes, etc. Since the online community is rather dead for me to reach the necessary covenant ranks, is there a way to get the necessary items? I looked in the wiki and most of the covenant rewards can be bought from the ghost in Drangleic castle but not all of them, for example the Sunlight Spear, so I was wondering if anybody can confirm you can get the plat without online play

    Finally done with Fume Knight

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:25 PM PDT

So, I accidentaly got myself into Dark Souls this year, thanks to quarantine. I love this kind and professional community, and I am happy to be a part of it!

I've made it through DSR last month, and loved it. In many years, this was the first game that actually made me sad during end credits. I didn't want it to end.

Now I am having a good time with DS2 (SotFS). For the last two weeks I was desperately trying to slay down Fume'y. I was doing several attempts each day, and finally did it today.

I was able to master his first phase, and went no-hit after several days of training. But dude, his second phase felt impossible. He was more agressive, and had several dirty moves (yes, I am talking about that goddamn explosion followed by fire strike). In the end I was just going backwards during his second phase, rolling, and going in for a hit after his "poke" attack. In the end, I finally saw the VICTORY screen. Best feeling in the world.

I just feel so much better after this fight, and I can feel that my movement significantly improved. Can't wait to continue on my journey!

    Doors of Pharros issue

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 04:35 AM PDT

I went to doors of Pharros before but avoided it to just fight Ol Smelty

I came back into doors of pharros and all the enemies are frozen and I can't deal damage to them and they obviously can't damage me

No other area in the game is having this issue
