Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

Better name for Bed of Chaos?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 12:51 AM PDT

The German Name of the Bed of Chaos is Chaoswesen von Izalith, which translates to Chaos being of Izalith. Which Name do you prefer more? (From the Lore perspective i think the German Name fits better but i want to know your opinion)

    You are the best community

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 02:19 AM PDT

I wanted to thank you all for your kindness and friendly behaviour.

Reddit is crawling with selfish bigheads and insta downvoters. The most of the users are disrespectful and dont even want to hear other peoples thoughts. This community has never been like this. There is some energy pulls the community together. Everyone is helpful and kind in my opinion.

I made a website that lets you make Orange Soapstone messages!

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 10:51 AM PDT

I'm playing Dark Souls for the first time, an I really like the message system... so I made this website to use it elsewhere.

It generates an image of how I imagine they would actually look, that you can then post elsewhere. There's only DS1 options for now, but I will add the others as I play through the games.

I hope you all like it!

WHICH BOSS ATE YOUR ASS THE MOST??

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:22 PM PDT

Out of all the bosses on Darksouls, which boss killed you the most? Or killed you more than they should have? (Any specific enemy could be an honorable mention.) I'm curious to know what some of ya'll answers are! Mine would prob be bed of Chaos just cause I didnt understand the boss fight immediately.

How do I introduce a Friend to Dark Souls 1?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 04:39 AM PDT

So I was playing Dark Souls for a while, just killed Sif. And I was interested to see my friend's reaction and I want to see how far he could go before going hollow and/or rage quitting. So, how do I introduce him to Dark Souls 1

Beyond the Lore: The Analogy of the Dark Souls

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:03 PM PDT

Many of us have been searching for the story of the Dark Souls games for years now, finding secrets and hidden connections about the characters and the world. Yet, I feel like we rarely took the next step. Like all great works of art, Dark Souls doesn`t just tell a story to entertain. It wants to say something and I believe figuring that message out goes beyond just the Lore. It takes a combined effort of understanding Lore and Game mechanics.

In the past months I have dedicated A LOT of my time into not just playing the games and consuming every Lore thread, video and essay I could find, but also digging through WIki entrys and piling up notes and Post It timelines. I have never been as deep into the games as these days, and while I obviously don`t have answers for everything, I indeed have a very coherent theme and set of metaphors that if nothing else hopefully inspire some discussion on this meta field.

All that poured into an essay that tries to explain the fundamental vocabulary that the games establish in an hopefully understandable and still entertaining way. I put all the concrete sources and game references in an extra document, that is actually longer than the main one now, for anyone who wants to dive even deeper.

Here are my essays, the main document in german and in english:

    Main Essay Document (German): https://www.file-upload.net/download-14201423/DarkSouls.pdf.html

    Main Essay Document (English): https://www.file-upload.net/download-14201417/DarkSoulsenglish.pdf.html

And my references document in english:

    References Document: https://www.file-upload.net/download-14201419/DSReferences.pdf.html

Also, I made a video, which has german voiceover, but uses the original voicelines and has, as of today, english subtitles:

    Video: https://youtu.be/rzmw-jCbzvs

I hope this shameless self-advertisement is ok. I put a lot of effort into this and too passionate about it to leave it at the 50 views my video got from friends who felt obliged to give it a click. Maybe this is interesting to some of you and can spark some discussion.

I beat Sl1 and I feel weird now...

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 01:25 AM PDT

Ok so I beat sl1 No summons and shields. Only cheesed 2 bosses. (Well technically one) Gwyn, but that was luck, because he did 8+ grab attacks in 4 minutes. Personally I don't count it a cheese, but for the sake of this post I will count it. Then ceaseless discharge, the easiest cheese. (Im sure you know ;)) So my top 3 hardest would be: 1. Gwyn His stupid stab attack which follows you. That's it I died to him at least 23 times in this run. 2. O&S Obviously 3. Artorias (Forgot (skipped) the rest of the dlc heheh ;)) Shout out to capra you were just annoying and dumb.

Anyway I feel weird. This was a headachy experience, but for some strange reason I dont regret it. I dont feel like the first time I beat the game, that time I felt empty and sad, now Im like "yeah ok mmmm" in siegmeyers voice. It was stressful tbh.

So which boss/enemy/obstacle did you find the hardest?

Extras: Ok you know how I said I did it without summons? Well anyway I did summon mildred for queelag cuz I forgot about the rule. Also isn't there a name for people like this? Was it onebro? Or something? Idk tbh

If you read all of this, thank you. :)

I have done the unthinkable. Absolutely unforgivable.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:48 PM PDT

I killed Seigward. It was a complete accident. The silver knight aggro'ed him and then I hit him twice while hitting the Knight.

I had to, he took it the wrong way and came after me.

Just had to vent, lol, it's the first time I ever killed him and I know he's a good guy too.

I dont have a lot of friends so I am showing my love for dark souls her. Post what you love about the game below please.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 06:27 PM PDT

I love how I have barely played it for like 15 hours, but I have memorized the games layout so far. I mean I just beat the Gaping Dragon, so I am not too much into the game. But almost all the locations I have been I kinda memorized the layout.

You die so much its hard to forget.

Also the music is just awesome.

What do you guys love about the game?

Gwyn and his family shared the same fate as the Dragons in the end

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 03:14 PM PDT

Everthing was going really well for Gwyn when the fire was strong but as soon as the fire weakened everything fell apart and most people affiliated with him hightailed or followed their own interests.

Gwyn's firstborn son abandoned him and sided with his enemies, his eldest daughter fled his kingdom along with all the other lords, his wife could have also turned against him as there is no mention of her anywhere (possibly removed from history just like this eldest son), the Four Kings of new Londo betrayed him and embraced the dark that he so feared (after giving them parts of his soul) and he couldn't decisively finish off Izalith and the demons who he started a war against. In short everything started to go really badly for Gwyn.

But the main moral here is that what he did to the Dragons (wage war on them as their age was over with the coming of the first flame) came right back around and bit him in the backside (karma) as he couldn't accept afterwards that his own age was over with the fading of the flame and that it was time for the age of dark. In short he was a hypocrite and what goes round comes round (the lords went the way of the dragons in dark souls 3, hunted to near extinction).

50 str for Havel Greatshield? Worth it ?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 01:40 AM PDT

This shield saved me so many times in NG+ and made the soul farming for it worth it in my opinion as it also helped me beat kalameet. Do you guys think this heavy shield is the best one or is a lighter shield better?

What is the best low-weight armour?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 09:30 PM PDT

I'm going for a quality/dex build. My goal is to level end to 40 and I'll probably also be using FAP ring. What is the best armour for poise and/or dmg reduction that will keep me fast rolling? I'll mainly be using light weapons and shields (estoc and heater shield for now, might farm for balder side sword later).

    I love this game.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 12:02 PM PDT

Taurus Demon was my first boss after the tutorial one. I died... probably around 20 times while trying to make it to the boss, and 10 times on the boss. Finally, I cut him up. At some point, I thought it was impossible or I was too high up or something since there were a few paths I could take. BUT FINALLY, it's over.

    Dex weapon recommendations

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 05:52 PM PDT

So right now I have 40 dex and I've been using the uchigatana, the iato and the life hunt scythe, but is/are there weapon(s) that are better for a dex character? I switch between the iato and the uchi for the move set differences. And I don't know how many bosses I'll even fight that will bleed even with the lifehunt but it does great damage for me and I like the heavy attacks.
