How do people play Dark Souls without help?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 11:48 PM PDT

I'm venturing into DSR for the first time. My first Soulsborne experience. I'm loving it. Amazing game...but I'm loving it because my hand is held via walkthroughs. Seriously, how does anyone get through this game on their own? How would I ever access the Painted World by myself. Why would I ever think to go back to the northern undead asylum, and if I did, how would I ever know to jump off an elevator and drive onto a random beam? How would I ever know to go to the Darkmoon bonfire and flash a ring so I can fight Gwendolyn? This game is incredible, but I would have no chance without assistance.

First time Dark Souls player, and boy did I over estimate myself.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 09:29 PM PDT

I got this game yesterday. All my life I've been like "Oh it can't be that hard. Surely people are exaggerating." I got it because 1. Pretty people and 2. I thought I would totally kick it's ass. Played it for about 6 hours yesterday, played it for like 6 more today. After about 7-8 total hours I finally killed the Taurus Demon! ...By falling off and it jumping after me. Now at this point I can barely get past the spot where the Fang Boar was (I managed to kill that! I'm proud of myself.) I just recently managed to get through the fog gate, but I'm not very good at getting there and I almost immediately died after going through. Also I can't tell if it's me being bad at video games or not but Switch controls feel awful.

My parents think Dark Souls is too "gloomy/dark"...

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 10:02 PM PDT

I'm 16, and I just saw Dark Souls 3 on sale on Xbox store. I asked my parents if I could get it but they, especially my dad, saw the trailer with me and thought the theme was too dark. He said that "playing the game with all the gloominess and sadness will affect you after playing and have that gloomy feeling with you the rest of the day."

He's afraid that the overall gloominess and darkness of Dark Souls will carry over to my everyday life and make me more gloomy. How do I convince him otherwise?

Its been a while since I did a new character on remastered, and wow. Its a shit show out there

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 12:36 AM PDT

Undead burg was a gravelord cesspool tonight. The servant was pretty chill though, I just stayed back and watched the smurfs try to rape him.

Still no-lifes as you'd expect waiting for fresh players by the undead burg bonfire. Just as trash as always with their sorcery builds and dragon heads.

and I actually got invaded in the "safe zone" before Andre of Astora. well right outside of it, but I was on my way there and ran into a pvp fogwall that definitely wasnt there before. Did not know it was possible

All in all, its good to be back. Got Black Knight weapons from every single Black Knight I've killed so far, so this character may be a keeper :)

How are you all faring with the dickwraiths tonight?

Edit: also wanna clarify sorcery and dragon heads and halberds and other OP tactics etc. are not shameful for PVE. If it weren't for you high level glass canon bois out there, I'd never have beaten four kings or manus

Massive fan of Bloodborne here. With the reveal of Demon Souls, now is the time for me to start playing the DS games. What's the best way to play these game?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 10:02 AM PDT

I own a really good gaming PC, a PS4 and a PS3. I remember there being controversy about the Dark Souls remaster, is that still a thing or did it get fixed?

So I would like to know, should I get them all on PC? And is it better to use a controller over a mouse and keyboard? If so, can you plug in your PS4 controller normally or would you have to use a mod?

    That's it. I have become a hollow.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 12:59 PM PDT

A week... I couldn't pass through Blighttown and failed. I was eager to fight Ornstein & Smough and Artorias after I beat Sir Alonne and Fume Knight from DS2 on NG+. I thought that they could bring me the same joy, but only now I understand that I am not even worthy to pass their fog gates. I've slaughtered Bell Gargoyles without even bothering to block or dodge, I thought I've seen hell after Frigid Outskirts but no, Blighttown took every drop of my thirst for challenge and slaughtered my entire soul...

So with Global Restart going on, I've been recording my invasions, Summons, and times I've been summoned, in order to share them with everyone here.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 07:17 PM PDT

My character name is "HealzForDaddy". I'm going a Miracle Build (Obviously), and I'm currently making my way to Ornstein and Smough so I can live up to my title.

Invaded by: Poopflinger III (the Third): I was in the Undead Parish, farming Titanite Shards and This man just came in, used the cheer emote like a conga dance of some kind, and finally just moved around until he yeeted himself off a cliff, I even tried to give him a humanity before he went and Wah'd his last Hoo :(.

Summoned by: Geralt: It was him and some guy fully armored and with a Boar Helm. I decided to hang around Capra Demon a bit and help out some people with the fight once I finished it (Was also part of the Sun Bro's, so I was farming Sun Medals for my Tier Two Thunderbolt). We killed the dogs easy, but while me and Boar Head were fighting Capra Bellow, Geralt was just sitting up at the old Plunging Spot, and we ended up losing Boar Head before I noticed and at that point I just headed up there and we plunged Capra to death.

Summoned: Friar Tuck: I was on my way through the Depths, and At the Bonfire was his Summon Sign. Naturally I couldn't miss the opportunity and summoned him. I handed him a vial of my "Divine Blessing" and we headed through the Depths, he showed me some secret's I didn't know, and then together we pounded my Gaping Dragon before showering me in Souls. He then had to leave but I was sure to give him one last prayer as farewell.

Summoned by: Charlie: This one was interesting because I had set my summon sign by Pinwheel, and when I got summoned, not only was I there, but so was Paladin Leeroy, as a White Phantom. Until that Point I only knew him as the Red Phantom that invaded you on your way to Neeto so this was a surprise for me. We did end up beating Pinwheel (of course) and I kind of left pondering on this new revelation.

Summoned by: daniel: I was farming more Medals at Iron Golem and ended up being summoned by this man, who used a Dry Finger in order to summon both Iron Tarkus and another lady by the name of Marian (Who had the same pants as me, that is the Hallowed Warriors Waste Cloth, and Also used Miracles) I handed him a Vial of my "Divine Blessing" before going in and we beat the ever living crap out of the Golem.

Invaded by: Ya Boi (twice): My most recent encounter with a player invader. The first time I was up on the tower where you get the Gold Coin. Well I thought I was sneaky and just waited for him to try and climb the tower before using force to knock him off. He was sneakier and found another way in and then just backstabbed me, sending me down the very same stairs I planned on knocking him down. I then was invaded again by him while I was fighting the Undead Phalanx, and it was a bit more honorable this time, but I still ended up getting backstabbed by him, his sword loaded with Greater Magic Blade and he himself empowered by the Power Within Pyromancy.

So yah, been enjoying the increased Activity thanks to the event. This is my first Global Restart, and it will be my first Return to Lordran when that comes around (at least that's what I think, I'm pretty sure it was mentioned that these are two different events for generally the same purpose) And while my Invader's repelled count is still at a nice solid 0, I don't let it get me down and I still look forward to pushing on through to help more peoples out, and light that sweet, sweet, First Flame. Good Luck out there, Keep your Humanity Safe, Vereor Nox.

Heretical Magic (Laurentius, Logan and Humanity)

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 12:56 PM PDT

While going through the original japanese text for a project I'm working on, I stumbled upon an interesting lore tidbit about the concept of heresy in Dark Souls.

    • Pyromancy

Laurentius, to repay his debt, offers the player to teach them his magic, but first he asks the following:

"…それとも、あんたも、呪術は気色悪い口か?" "*Do you find pyromancy sickening?*"

Pyromancers and their doctrine are considered taboo: as Laurentius too states, this kind of magic has a primitive connotation to it, so much so that it's called 呪術, the magic typical to shamans.

Laurentius even calls himself a heretic:

    "俺は異端だ、そんなことはわかってる。不死になっても、それは変わらないさ" "I'm a **heretic**, I know! Being undead won't change that."

Pyromancy doesn't require any special attribute to be learnt, it is innate to humans (the hand of a pyromancer itself is their catalyst) and humanity is something looked down up in Gwyn's world: humanity is synonymous with the Dark, a murky primeval state of life. When humanity went wild in Oolacile, its citizens turned into feral shadows of their former selves and even Manus fights more like an enraged beast than the sorcerer he once was.

Laurentius: "*Pyromancy has a, well, rather primitive aspect to it. It meshes poorly with advanced culture, and pyromancers are considered rather unsavoury.*" Gwynevere (Gwyndolin): "*Without Fire, all shall be a frigid and frightful Dark.*"
    • The Dark:

Deceiveful or not, Kaathe's words ring true when witnessing how humans have been treathed by Gwyn and his kins: the Way of White hunts down the accursed ones, born from Gwyn's sin, and the Gods came up with a self-fulfilling prophecy to trick undead into sacrifing themselves to the first flame, believing they'll break their very curse by acting like this.

Kaathe:"*Lord Gwyn resisted the course of nature. By sacrificing himself to link the fire, and commanding his children to shepherd the humans, Gwyn has blurred your past, to prevent the birth of the Dark Lord.*" Lloyd's Talisman: "*Talisman utilized by Allfather Lloyd's cleric knights to hunt down the Undead. In the outside world, the Undead are accursed creatures, and Lloyd's cleric knights are widely praised for their Undead hunts.*" Gwynevere: "*And beseech thee. Succeed Lord Gwyn, and inheriteth the Fire of our world.

Thou shall endeth this eternal twilight, and avert further Undead sacrifices.*"

Anastacia: "*… Finally, the curse of the Undead will be lifted, and I can die human.*"

Gwyn fears the Dark within humans and claim everything related to it as repulsively outdated, beastial and inferior.

Pyromancy being born from the Daughter of Chaos makes it even more despicable to the Gods' eyes, who fought the Demons long ago.

Black Knight Shield: "*Long ago, the black knights faced the chaos demons, and were charred black, but their shields became highly resistant to fire.*"
    • Logan:

Pyromancers aren't the only despised magicians though. There's a lone sorcerer who's often ridiculed by his peers.

The sorceries of Vinheim are called 魔術, similar to the dark arts of alchemists. They're the fruits of long studies and practice and require a staff to be casted.

In that school, a century before the events of Dark Souls, an anti-social student named Logan worked hard to evolve the magic of the academy beyond what's deemed acceptable.

    Griggs says:

"師は、そういう**異端**のやり方で、魔術をあそこまで押し上げたんだ" "My master pushed magic so far in such a **heretical** way."

Logan, perhaps unaware, conceived new sorceries that are closer in nature to pyromancies: imbued with souls, a lifesource strictly linked to humanity, this magic seems to replicate the ancient spells of primeval men that are lost in the current age the game takes place in.

Homing Soulmass: "Life originates in the soul; no wonder the soulmass draws toward it. This sorcery is a window into seeker Logan's methods."

Humanity: "*If the soul is the source of all life, then what distinguishes the humanity we hold within ourselves*" Pursuers: "*The will feels envy, or perhaps love, and despite the inevitably trite and tragic ending, the will sees no alternative, and is driven madly toward its target.*"

This is my speculation, but I believe the reason Logan lost his mind is exactly because, while studying the crystalization of souls, he discovered that this so advanced magic is nothing more than the most primitive and emotion driven sorceries known to humans (and it's this realization and embracing of his own primitiveness that made him abandon his vest).

    • Bloodborne

To finish my posts, I'd like to suggest anyone interested in these aforementioned themes of the beastly nature of men, ascension and neglect of humanity, as this game digs even deeper into the dichotomy of Primitivism and Transhumanism and the relationship between what would fit Freud's model made up of the Id, Ego and Superego.

First Time Playing Dark Souls. Question about Quality build

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 01:24 AM PDT

So, I'm playing Dark Souls 1 Prepare to Die Edition for the first time. I have no experience in any souls game so I'm trying to run spoiler free. I'm still at the very start of the game (started Bandit + MasterKey, those were suggestion of a friend). He also suggested me to go with a quality build since I "could use basically any weapon".

My question is, how do you suggest to distribute the attributes? I just don't wanna get in area that is too hard and realize my attributes are too spreaded. So, maybe something like:

    STR 16
    DEX 16
    VIT 14
    END 14

    then

    STR 20
    DEX 20
    VIT 20
    END 20

    then
    STR 24
    DEX 24
    VIT 22
    END 22

Any suggestion would be great. Thanks!

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 01:21 AM PDT

I understand that there might be personal preferences, but I think it's good to know what to use for the long run. I am currently playing Dark Souls remastered and use currently the Drake Sword as my primary and the Claymore+5 as my secondary. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What's going on with vagrants? In my 700+ hours between the OG and Remastered, I think I saw 2, maybe 3. Now I've seen 2 more in the past hour!

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 05:37 PM PDT

I'm guessing it's simply because there are more people playing right now, with the global reset restart happening. But damn, 2 in an hour was really unexpected. One in New Londo Ruins, one at Ash Lake.
