Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

    Finally finished my despawn run!

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 11:19 AM PDT

Unexpectedly took three years, but a lot of that was taken up by two significant breaks (first a couple of months during Earthen Peak, then about a year and a half between the main game and the DLCs).

Motivation: I've never played a Souls game and was intrigued by the despawn mechanic in this one and curious how reaching the limit on grinding would affect the notorious difficulty. Turns out, it lets someone like me who is relatively unskilled at action games beef up enough to make it through, but still offers plenty of challenge (to the tune of 394 deaths). I also do much better with slower, more tactical combat like this game offers.

One thing about going through every area and fighting every enemy (at least) 12 times is you soon learn each area's setup and the best way to deal with it. I came to think of traversing an area as being similar to a boss fight--just as you learn a boss's moves and abilities and work out how to beat him, you learn an area's geography and enemies and work out a system for point A to point B. In both cases, it's all about a willingness to adjust to fit that particular challenge.

Favorite thing: I now have a save file with a Drangleic empty of hostiles (excepting the very few infinitely-spawning ones) that I can just wander around and explore whenever I feel like it.

Least favorite thing: I hate heights, and this game has lots of them. Cliffs, ledges, narrow bridges, FUCKING CHAINS between high towers... I sympathize with the arachnophobes, but their bane only exists in a couple of areas, and they can be scared off with torches. The high places in this game are everywhere and can't be scared off or fought to extinction, only powered through with a slippery controller held in sweaty palms.

Another takeaway: I've discovered that this game has actually made me better at action gaming in general. During my second break, I played (among other things) God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, and both Assassin's Creed Origins & Odyssey, and I think I had a much better time than I would have before my Souls training.

    My endgame numbers:

    Level: 260

    VGR: 50

    END: 20

    VIT: 49

    ATN: 26

    STR: 40

    DEX: 40

    ADP: 25

    INT: 32

    FTH: 31

    SM: 17,002,406

    Deaths: 394

NG+ is going to be interesting, because there's a big difficulty jump, but most of my abilities are now soft-capped, so I'm not going to get a whole lot stronger.

Overall, I enjoyed myself quite a lot. Kinda wish the other games had a Company of Casuals covenant that offered the same despawn mechanic.

    Blacksteel Katana or Chaos Blade?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:56 AM PDT

Which one is better? I'm using a 60 DEX build with Espada Ropera and Katana. I have 25 STR for Loyce GS which I use everynow and then. Total SL is 205 on NG+.

    My experience despawning Frigid Outskirts

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 10:16 PM PDT

Was originally going to post this as an aid to JoeytheSchmo's Petrified Dragon Bone farming guide, but it ended up being so long that I thought I'd make it a separate post in case it's useful for others dealing with this area as well.

I can say that Frigid Outskirts is indeed a strange beast. The reindeer seem to have spawn zones rather than spawn points, and I'm pretty sure I got over 20 between each building. If I knew when I started how odd the situation would be, I would have tried to keep count. Also, sometimes you get two at once, and that seems random.

Their lightning range attacks are easily dodged, but their physical attacks aren't (for me anyway), so I ended up just shield-up tanking. Best place to attack them is from the side, as they can headbutt you in front and kick you flat from behind. They do stagger (Red Iron Twinblade plus Stone Ring for me) but recover quickly.

There are no reindeer from the coffin to the nearby ring of stones, nor from the ring to the first building. Safest strategy I found from that point was to take a few steps out in the blizzard from the other side's exit, then run back to the building with reindeer in pursuit. This way, if you die, your souls are always between you and the reindeer. Oh, and fighting them by the building also helps because they don't take corners as well as you. Anyway, just repeat this, feathering back to the bonfire as necessary to recharge healing. Eventually, walking out straight, angled left, and angled right no longer drew attacks, so I went to the next building and started the process again.

The second building has a healing pool activated by a Pharros Lockstone found elsewhere in Eleum Loyce. It also has three basic hollows (plus a fourth on the way there), which aren't any kind of problem. Same strategy for the reindeer.

The third building has two stronger armored opponents on the way, easily not aggroed, and two more hollows. Run to the left side entrance of this building, as the reindeer spawn on the right side.

Once I cleared those, I mistakenly thought I was done, until heading for Lud and Zallen. Got hit by reindeer twice more in that area, but was unable to bring out more afterward, so they may have been stragglers.

Finally, lastly, I ran from the entry coffin toward the sun, as following that wall to the boss bridge is a common minimal reindeer strategy given, and I wanted to see if those were included in the ones I'd despawned. Sure enough, I got nailed on the way to the wall, then found a few more walking up and down the wall. Not nearly a whole respawn sequence though, maybe six or so total, I think. Eventually, I was able to walk all the way along that wall to the cliff with no attacks. I then followed the wall all the way around the Outskirts to the opposite side of the cliff, and was never attacked once on the left side.

Total Petrified Dragon Bone haul from the whole experience (Jester's Cap + Watchdragon Parma Shield + Covetous Gold Serpent Ring +1) was about 8. Plus a few Old Radiant Lifegems.

So there you have my experience. The rules for this place are obscure, but it's still very workable with what you do learn.

Edit: Totally forgot to mention that the last building has one of the lance golems parked in it. Not something I'd want to be surprised by, so apologies. Also another standard hollow, but pfft.

    Armor used in Happy souls?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 04:54 AM PDT

    Stupid question:

Armour used in happy souls? I know the blue is full Elite Knight, but what about the other one? It looks like the Royal Soldier set (not the pointy helm one), but I doubt you can get it extremely early game. (since they went thru the whole game like that) Maybe it's

    A) different set but with royal helm

    B) They are in ng+ (altho, they were surprised by everything, so the chances are low)

    C) Only used for visuals, but they used the different set in the proper playthru

I need help getting back into it

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:55 AM PDT

So I have really enjoyed ds2 so far. It was my first experience with fromsoft and though the first time I didn't get far at all, after beating Bloodborne and Sekiro, coming back to Ds2 has been a lot of fun (though I do feel a bit OP because I LOVE leveling up so I tend to overlevel. Add hexing to that and... Well it's certainly been the easiest fromsoft experience I've had). So my problem is, I just stopped playing. I do have that tendency sometimes if I skip a couple days playing something (or reading a book) I can just lose all interest even if it's something I really enjoyed. I worked my way up the dragon place (sorry I'm not great with names) and it was really feeling like a crescendo in the game. Those guardian dudes were pretty challenging and fun. I wondered what the heck was up with the other guys that just kinda watched you.... And then I got to this epic dragon! And..... It felt super anticlimactic to me. I got the thing to go visit the memories, and now I'm just kinda wandering around trying to remember where I saw previous giants. Granted I only got to one of the memories but in looking stuff up it seems like there's a bunch I have to go find. Am I missing something here? Maybe the memories are going to be super epic and awesome but to have to wander around trying to find them or looking up a list online, it just feels like the pace got totally disrupted at such a cool point in the game. So I set it down to take a days break and it's hard to want to jump back in. Excluding the DLC is this the rest of the game? Going into these memories? Am I near the end of the game? Sorry I know this is a lot of words to say very little but I just kinda wanted to share my experience and hope that I can get a little insight or a push to keep going.

Confession: After completing a NG+ no-death, no-bonfire run, I immediately died to the Pursuer. Twice.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:10 PM PDT

    God, I'm dumb.

It's like a detox, though. Get all the dying out of my system after a long binge.

    Lore

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:55 AM PDT

Am I the only Skelton out here tripping through the game with no clue as to why tf I'm doing what I'm doing? I don't actually know why I need the 4 Great Souls. All I know is it opens a door. Idk why the door is locked, idk why the Souls unlock it. Idk why I have to fight half the people I do. Why does Velstadt fight me? Surely he knows that Vendrick is Hollow. What is he protecting at this point? I'm not even 100% sure why Vendrick failed, except that he was betrayed by his queen in some manner. But he just gave up? Why fight Sir Alonne? Except maybe for the challenge. I genuinely feel like a murder hobo most of the time. I can't even tell if I'm the good guy. Am I the hero? Linking the Fire seems like a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I know it brings about a new Age, but does it actually cure the Curse? Then you have the guys who I actually think are good, like the Heide Knights and the Dragonrider and Dragonslayer. The entire Heide Order (as far as I can tell) is devoted to protecting others. Why am I killing those guys (assuming they're not already Hollow)? Even joining the Order feels weird. Like, "sorry I killed your pet dragon and all your knights and the guy guarding the cathedral, but can I be one of you guys now?" I love the game, but I have no freaking clue as to what I'm doing or why.

Just wanted to express my new-found love for this game

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 12:25 PM PDT

So I played this game for the first time in March of this year and really didn't like it, I hated it so much I couldn't even bring myself to play the dlcs which I heard were great. After replaying ds1&3 so much recently I find them a bit boring so I decided to pick up ds2 again. Holy hell I loved every second of this game, I really appreciate the amazing lore and areas in this game and especially all the amazing mechanics they introduced that they kept for ds3. And the dlcs were so gooood! All the things I hated during my first play through are actually what make the game amazing. Thank you dark souls 2 for bringing me so much unexpected joy.

Was doing an achievement run for 360 version for the first time ever playing; boyfriend just bought me the Xbox One version!

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 07:59 AM PDT

    Starting on the xbox 360!

    So I spent some time completely farming this game until they stopped spawning at least to the Gutter point, much to the frustration of my boyfriend who has been playing this game for years and has been pushing me to just do the bosses and ACTUALLY play the game. I've finally started doing that after getting my stats pretty much where I want them to be for the rest of my time playing the 360. I'm still working on the covenant rank reward spells since the servers are dead on this console. Problem is now I have to do the achievement on the One too. I plan on using the same heavy armor/hexer build as the 360 with the stats as follows;

    Vigor: 20 Endurance: 15 Vitality: 25 Attunement: 20 Strength: 20 Dexterity: 10 Adaptability: 5 Faith: 50 Intelligence: 50

I'm relatively new to this game still and I've spent a lot of time grinding on the 360 just to have to do the same thing for the One. My real question here is, is there anyone willing to help me with my achievement run in any way they can? The only help I'm really asking for is just getting the ranks for covenent spells that I need for the achievements. Any tips/offers/etc. would be so appreciated!

    Darksouls Represents Change

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:42 AM PDT

I just beat Fume Knight, where to go.

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 01:17 PM PDT

Apparently it's a meme that people keep saying they defeated fume knight. He honestly doesn't deserve the reputation he has on here. My review of the boss, if you have defeated all the bosses in ds3 or any others after Ds2 it's pretty easy. It took around 6-9 tries, if I remembered correctly, to beat him. He's hard but if you've fought and beat Gael it's drastically easier in comparison. I'm not trying to say it's bad. Just that from soft has really upped their game over the years. Now where do I go. I found a samurai armor set somewhere in the dlc and now it's glowing. I'm trying to interact with it but nothing seems to work. Do I need to destroy all the ashen idols? Maybe defeat the other dlc. I've already finished the sunken king dlc. Thanks for reading this far.

    Fume Ultra Greatsword worth it?

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:37 PM PDT

Hi, this is my first time on DS2 so I haven't tried a lot of weapons and I don't know if I should upgrade everything I get, so I thought that asking here first could save me some trouble and titanite. I have focused mainly on Strength, currently I'm at 63 strength and I use a +10 Greatsword.

A couple of minutes ago I managed to beat the Fume Knight so I was wondering if acquiring the Fume Ultra Greatsword is worth it or if I should stay with my Greatsword or look somewhere else.

    Almost there!

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 02:19 PM PDT

I played this and the DLC when it came out, finished it, and ended up getting a PS4 (and subsequently, Bloodborne and DS3). I got a taste of blood by getting my first plat with Bloodborne, then decided to plat all the Dark Soulses, going in reverse order. I plat'd DS3 (grinding is so fun, you should try it some time), and am now on DS2. I'm -->THIS FREAKIN' CLOSE<-- to platting it. This , to me, is more of an accomplishment that plat'ing DS3.

    All I have left are...

    • Master of Sorcery:
      • Crystal magic weapon (in Dragon Shrine)
      • Unleash magic (from Royal Sorcerer Navlaan)
    • Master of Pyromancy
      • Great chaos fireball (from Chancellor Wellager in NG++)
      • Forbidden sun (from Royal Sorcerer Navlaan)
    • Master of Miracles
      • Bountiful sunlight (from Chancellor Wellager in NG++)
      • Wrath of gods (from Chancellor Wellager in NG++)
    • Moonlight greatsword (have Benhart survive three boss fights)

    Starting Class and Build

    Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:18 AM PDT

DS2 will be the last of the soulbourne games to play. I noticed a pattern in my character creation so I want your input to change it up for DS2.

Here is the order of my character creation for each game in the series:

    Bloodborne

    1 - quality build 2 - strength build 3 - pure arcane build fav

    Dark Souls 3

    1 - Paladin build (str/faith) 2 - pure pyro build fav 3 - sorcerer int build 4 - Dex (katana/dual weild) 2nd fav

    Dark souls remastered

    1 - Quality build 2 - Dex/pyromancy fav

Now I have purchased DS2 Sotfs and I am going to start my first playthrough.

My first character is always not my favorite. I am still figuring the game out and end up wasting my resources.

I need your opinion and suggestions to help me achieve 2 things :

1 - Start a new different build 2 - what is the best class in DS2 and most fun.

I'm making a "Escanor" build, axe and pyromancy, i want your opinion, should I made it int/faith or just faith?. Other question, is it worth it to farm the ruins set?. I'm looking for golden type armor but it has a very low drop, I'm thinking in the syan set instead.
