Was replaying Dark Souls and my 6 year old was playing Minecraft on his iPad next to me. Little did I know he was making Solaire.

I just finished Siegmeyer's quest. Never forget.

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 08:26 AM PDT

    Hello.

Sure, I already knew it. I know the steps, I did in the classic DS version... I was only thinking in that sweet, nice titanite chunk...

But then I had to talk to Sieglinde. She was sad, she cried.

    I am sad too now.

Rest in Piece, Onion Knight. Your bravery made me smile, your encounter in Anor Londo, that first time years ago, made me confident enough to take down those Silver Knights. You are my favourite character.

    Never forget.

I have chills looking at this massive structure. Amazing architecture that makes you wonder how the heck they built that thing on a seemingly unstable foundation. Gwyn approves.

Damn it, I missed the part where beating this game meant I'd get the discipline, strength and moxy to conquer the rest of my life's problems...

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 12:19 PM PDT

...all I did was play the rest of the Soulsborne series, LOVED IT, and ignore my extremely basic commitments and responsibilities to my friends/family/job/community. Please patch.

I finally fucking did it. Tonight I beat Dark Souls for the first time

    Posted: 16 Jun 2020 12:13 AM PDT

This feels so surreal. No other game has completely taken over my life like this has and it just feels really weird that now I'm done with it. I beat Bloodborne a couple weeks ago for the first time (as my first action RPG ever) and loved it, thinking nothing would ever top that experience. And since I found Bloodborne to be kinda easy I went into Dark Souls confident that I would have as good of a time and that it would be just as much of a breeze. But holy shit, I was so wrong. This game kicked my ass like no other has, nothing's even come close. I tried playing Dark Souls 4 or 5 times since I got it a year ago, never getting further than beating the Taurus Demon, which I seemed to just barely beat each time I tried. I literally thought it was impossible, like I just could not do anything right. And even this time around I felt like it was pure luck that was getting me through the game. But somewhere down the line it all just clicked. The aggressive, in-your-face style of BB that I loved was just not how this game operated, but once I realized that and started to be a bit more patient with every encounter it all just started to feel so right, and so good! Like the combat in this game just feels so great, there's such a weight to your attacks and the rhythm and flow of each encounter just has this perfect feel to it. I think it was around Blighttown and especially Quelaag where I realized how special the game was (which is insane considering how punishing and generally hated that area is, but It honestly is one of, if not my single favorite area in the whole game). During the Quelaag fight I literally like instinctively said "ah that was my fault" upon dying, and I just got this huge aha moment, along with a big fuckin smile on my face. And from then on, when I actually felt like I knew what I was doing, the game became so goddamn fun. I never ever will go out of my way in games to 100% them or visit all the optional areas and bosses but I did here just cause I couldn't get enough of this damn game. Like I would've scoffed at the idea of actually playing a DLC expansion before this, but Artorias and Manus are literally the two best boss fights in any game imo, and I'm so glad I went out of my way to do the whole area. Dark Souls is without a doubt the single best experience I've ever had in a single player game, and I can't wait to see what the other games in the series hold in store.

To the Sens Fortress invader: I really, really hate you right now.

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 10:08 PM PDT

I'm on my first play through and my god Sens is kicking my ass. After grueling grinding and giting good, I finally make it to the top. I am LITERALLY CROSSING THE LAST PENDULUM BRIDGE, AND I GET INVADED. Of course the fucker spawns on the side of the bridge I need to get to, as I'm running across. Then the red asshole KICKS ME OFF THE BRIDGE. I don't think I've ever been this salty about video game before, and really needed to blow some steam to people who know what I'm talking about. And FUCK YOU INVADER MAX!

To those who think Dark Souls won't get another sequel..

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 09:53 PM PDT

You're probably right, Dark Souls ended, the cycle has been broken, Ornstein has forsaken his duties, and probably became a dragon, The fire was left to flicker, whither, and rot away, for humanity rules this day... but let me leave you with this thought. Dark Souls is about cycles, and breaking them. What if humanity falls into the same habits as the lords of cinder, relighting the dark soul using the old hollowed bodies of the old gods. what if instead we link the fire, we link the abyss, for all is possible since the status quo is broken-

While I bring this up not because I think a Dark Souls 4 will ever come out, but it is interesting to think about.

What are your dark souls unpopular opinions and hot takes?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 11:19 PM PDT

Just beat dark souls for the first time. WOW!!!

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 10:08 PM PDT

Over the years, I never got the hype until I picked up this game recently and finished it for myself. I have to say that I am stunned, this game is amazing! It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it has offered me the most unique gaming experience I have ever had. I dont think another game has given me as much adrenaline and satisfaction as dark souls. That ending fight with gwyn was intense! I think more mainstream studios should learn from dark souls and how it creates atmosphere and tension using only music and lore. Anyways, I just wanted to vent how happy I am to have finally beaten the game. I can't wait to play dark souls 2!

I have a problem with the chaos servant covenant.

    Posted: 16 Jun 2020 04:36 AM PDT

I decided that on my NG+ run of Dark souls remastered I'd try to save Solaire, so I joint the chaos servant covenant. The problem I faced is that after I joined, I didn't get the great chaos flame and after giving her 30 humanity, my rank did not increase.Am I doing something wrong or is this a quirk of DSR?

Breath of the Wild taking some inspiration from Dark Souls???

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 07:26 PM PDT

My partner is playing Breath of the Wild and Im playing Dark Souls and I cant help but notice similarities. Is that just because of DS's pervasive influence on games? Im specifically thinking of the feeling of progression, exploration, as well as dying all the time. BotW doesn't have as steep of a skill cap but there seem to be some influence. Just a thought.

After 500 hours I finally learned how to parry Gwyn lol

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 07:49 PM PDT

I've been playing this game constantly since I got it over a year ago, and I've completed all sorts of challenge runs (bow-only, SL1, no leveling vitality, whip-only, caestus-only, you get the deal. I clearly have a problem). The only catch? Even after completing the game a dozen times, I still felt like I was trash at parrying even basic mobs. Whatever, I thought, parrying just must not be "my thing." I could still beat the game without ever parrying, so I never bothered to devote any real time to learning it, even though it always meant that Gwyn was a significantly challenging final encounter for me (I would usually just munch on those sweet mushrooms Elizabeth gives you and dodge/damage trade my way through, this even worked on my SL1 run with nothing but a reinforced club). Recently, I started a SL2 run (leveled dex once so I could use the longsword, since even though it's such a staple weapon I'd never beaten the game with it before), and Gwyn was just NOT respecting my style at all this time. Try after try he would laugh at my pitiful damage, even with a chaos longsword +5, and it was beginning to look a little hopeless. I decided this would be it. This would finally be the run in which I learn how to parry that mf and shove my sword straight through his cindered kidneys for all he had done to me. I braced myself for an epic, hours-long montage of me finally beginning to understand parrying and getting closer and closer to victory until that climactic moment when everything clicks and....wow. Turns out it only took a few tries. That was a lot easier than I thought it would be and I truly feel like a dumbass for not believing in my parry potential sooner.

TLDR: GG, Gwyn. I always respected how difficult you were when it was just dodging and swinging, but now that I've got those parries down, I understand all the "what, that was it?" reactions the rest of the community seems to often have. Never give up, skeletons. Don't you dare go hollow!

Coming back to DS1 after DS3 - this is wack, yall.

    Posted: 16 Jun 2020 04:21 AM PDT

DSR on the switch was the most intense it got in terms of games I'd played until my eventual descent down this glorious rabbit hole of a franchise about a year ago. Now, fast-forward to now, post-100+ hours on both DS3 and BB, and I'm not sure how I didn't realize how clunky this game was. It's jarring how much slower it is than 3 and BB. Anything below fast-rolling feels like a fat-roll and the attacks on most of the medium-heavy weapons feel super delayed. A lot of the attacks I had mastered are suddenly slightly faster or slower than I remembered... this game keeps you humble, man.

It's pretty novel relearning it, even if you can't redo the first play through or anything. I'm going to try a spear (partizan) this time around, not sure if it's gonna last me long but I like it's Moveset if not it's damage... At least it's not the basic claymore or zweihander.

Tl;dr Dark Souls is still providing novelty and kicking my ass even after I played it to death like a year and a half ago. Crazy, man.

Are we killing illusions throughout all the game?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 10:25 AM PDT

Some time ago I killed the daughter of Gwynn and then Anor Londo went completely dark. I ran back to the first bonfire of Anor Londo and I noticed that all of the giant sentinels were gone. Someone told me that everything was an illusion. When I killed the giants they disappeared into a white mist. Does that mean that every single enemy that I killed and died in a white mist was an illusion?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 08:59 AM PDT

I have never played a Dark Souls game before, but after finishing Sekiro I just I had to give it a try. This game was everything I could have asked for. It was challenging yet fair which made it feel super rewarding. Landing that final blow in Gwyn just made me feel so satisfied and accomplished. I just had to share my win with this great community! Dark souls 2 here I come ! Cheers !
