Story time: Ash Lake, the Black Hydra, and a lone Mushroom Man Posted: 24 Aug 2020 05:23 PM PDT I just walked out onto the beaches of Ash Lake for the first time after noodling around this god-forsaken Great Hollow for about an hour. I'm cursed, of course, and am too lazy to warp back and get another purging stone because i don't feel like slogging through the Blighttown swamp again. Would've been too kind of them to make this bonfire a warp point, I suppose. No surprise there. I get to the Hydra and say OH i know this one. I feel like a kid in class who knows the answer to a math problem: get in there, put your shield up, and chop the heads off. Easy. I start slicing and dicing, feeling like a goddamn Roman gladiator, lobbing heads off like i've been doing this my whole life, when something catches my eye. A mushroom boi. A fucking. Mushroom. Boi. Not one of the little ones, oh no, the ones that are built like Andre the Giant. And he's walking right at me. Now, this guy is somehow more frightening than the hydra: one fungus-smelling punch from this phallus of an enemy, and I'm dead. That means dropping down through this dry oak nightmare again. So what's an undead to do? I'm under attacks from the seven-headed serpent in ten second intervals, and now am being chased by Super Mario's night terrors come to life. So, i begin running in circles, shield up, and seeing if the hydra will take out the mushroom. Seems plausible at first, until realizing that the Hydra attacks as accurately as a drunken toddler. But still i persist, running in circles like i'm playing the worlds strangest game of duck-duck-goose, and soon the hydra and the spore-whore are both nearly dead. And how could i end this in the most depressingly Dark Souls way possible? I get greedy, take a swing at the mushroom, whiff like it was my first time ever pressing R1, and get smacked down, WWE-style by my new greatest nemesis, the thicc-boi fungus. I thought I was about to pull the greatest W in my DS career and show this game that I own it, but instead was slammed down in a blaze of shame by the universe's most unlikely tag-team duo. Thought you'd all enjoy a nice bedtime story. Anyways, back to dying, and Praise the Sun [T]/ [link] [comments] |
What Area in Dark Souls 1 do you think would be the best or worst to take a nap in? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:25 AM PDT I like to ask myself these little inconsequential questions about the Souls series to lull myself to sleep and I thought I'd put this one out to the community. I think the best would be the Dukes Archives. Think about it. No smell of death and decay. No screaming hollows. No distractions. Just pick up a decent tome of forbidden knowledge, lock yourself in a cell and drift off to dream land. The worst, I feel, would be the obvious. Blighttown. The buzzing of mosquitos and moaning monstrosities at all hours would be unbearable. And imagine the smell. You don't even get the fresh shit. You gotta deal with the stale, pungent scent of expired waste. Gross. [link] [comments] |
How Dark Souls helped me to be a dad Posted: 24 Aug 2020 06:05 AM PDT I picked up Dark Souls remastered on the switch a little less than a year ago. It was my first time playing, and I was terrible at first, dying to all the "easy" bosses (not Pinwheel thankfully) a lot of times. These constant failures made me drop the game for a couple months. I eventually picked it up again with a new mindset of being super aggressive in my play style, and I did so much better than before. Areas and bosses I thought challenging were possible now. They still were rough at times, but I knew it was possible. For some unknown reason, I stopped playing the games when I only had a few things left before beating it. Fast forward to last week, and I told myself that I would beat the game before my wife gave birth to our first child because I knew I was going to be to busy to play it regularly. My wife ended up going into labor a bit earlier than expected, and we had a baby girl yesterday evening. While her and the baby slept, I played Dark Souls to keep myself awake, and I finished the game. It was so challenging, but the feeling of beating the game was so exhilarating. My baby girl has already thrown challenges our way with my wife and I hardly sleeping, needing constant attention unless she is asleep, along with other things. Just like Dark Souls being tough, but possible to beat, I have a feeling it will be the same raising this little girl. There will be times that I want to throw my hands up. There will be times I am frustrated. Regardless though, I know it is possible. I know my wife and I can take care of her and give her what she needs. The baby is just like a challenging boss sometimes, and it takes effort to get through the situation. Great day, great game, great baby, praise the sun. [link] [comments] |
TIL You can jump down Frampt's hole?? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 11:21 PM PDT I legit had no idea and I accidentally fell in and apparently it doesn't kill you. I've had this game forever and I've played through a multitude of times and I'm just now figuring this out lol. [link] [comments] |
My First Trek Through Tomb of Giants Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:26 PM PDT Initial Reaction: Hot damn, what a cool concept! No light? Im the chosen undead! I can fight without light! Man they sure don't make games like they used to, am I right? This is gonna be dope! (Give or take 15 minutes, 5 deaths by gravity/ patches/ skeleton beast) Yeah this place blows. Whose idea was this? [link] [comments] |
The second half of this game is underrated. Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:50 PM PDT I find the argument that the second half of Dark Souls is subpar to be incredibly flawed. Outside of Bed of Chaos and some things about Izalith, I'd argue its just fine. I'll break it down area by area, ignoring the DLC since that seems universally praised:
Out of all these areas only Izalith has significant issues. I'd argue there are sections in the first half that are worse than New Londo, Catacombs, Duke's Archives and Demon Ruins. Lower Burg is so small it shouldn't even count as a level and not many people care for the boss. Northern Undead Asylum could have been a bit more....while it is a tutorial area, its one intended to be revisted. Unead Burg is a really plain area with boring enemies thats saving grace is the view from where we kill Taurus Demon. I understand the first half of the game fits together better with the different shortcuts and whatnot, and the second half gets away from that a bit with a more spokes on a wheel design, but the quality of the individual levels is just as high IMO. TLDR: Out of all the areas in the second half, only Lost Izalith has glaring issues. The rest offer unique experiences compared to the rest of the game that largely plays the same. Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:21 PM PDT I haven't played any Dark Souls games before but I am really interested in starting one now. Are the games story driven and if not would it matter if I skipped Dark Souls 1 because Dark Souls 2 is cheaper right now. [link] [comments] |
NG+7 ending with (almost) 4.5 million souls Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:08 PM PDT Hey no one saw the finale on stream (boo hoo right?) I made it through all areas and all bosses without losing my souls and humanity. I thought if I was going to lose, it would have been to the Bed of Chaos or The Four Kings but I prevailed. Maybe I need a new game to play... [link] [comments] |

What's the best NPC fashion souls wise? Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:31 PM PDT I really don't have a reason for making this post. but I think Siegmeyer has the best fashion. What's your favorite NPC fashion wise. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 09:54 PM PDT Hi guys, During the start of this pandemic i went through some dark shit, and playing the souls games really helped me out, so i want to get a tattoo that has a connection to the dark soul series. The thing is i cant think of any tattoo that would look good. Ive thought about getting a bonfire or a dark sigil but it doesnt fully convinces me Im looking for something small and i'd appreciate any ideas you have, it can be a quote from the game or even deep lore shit. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Well, I completed my first run-through. Posted: 24 Aug 2020 12:11 PM PDT I don't know how to feel. What started off as a barrage of questions that were patiently answered by this wonderful community developed into a deeper understanding of the philosophical implications of every decision I was making. For the first time in any game I've ever played, I didn't want to get to the end. I didn't mind the constant return to the bonfire, or the need to tell myself it was ok to take a break and come back later. I found joy in every moment of the 89 hours I explored various builds before picking one that resonated most with me and getting to the final boss. I truly enjoyed this experience, and even more so I have an appreciation for all the posts on here that talk about this game helping people feel motivated to chip away at the obstacles in their lives, learning the mechanics slowly as they go. This whole game is incredibly Sisyphean, and I highly recommend reading "The Myth of Sisyphus" by Albert Camus if you're reading this sub. It's my most recommended philosophical essay to those who ask, and it fundamentally changed the way I think about and approach life. That said, Dark Souls is the epitome of playing as the absurd hero. Especially how it ends. Thank you to all who helped me along the way, and I look forward to NG+ [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Aug 2020 08:06 PM PDT [This took a long time to make. If you'd like to support posts like this that take a lot of effort, please consider dropping an upvote so it gains traction. Thanks so much!!! ❤️ And of course, please enjoy!!] You awaken in Firelink Shrine, however nothing seems to be as it was. There is no pathway along the cliffside that leads to undead burg. There is no pathway leading to the catacombs, or even new londo. However, there is a new cave opening by the three chests down the parish elevator shaft. As you take a look around you, you notice that there are a few other adventurers sitting at the bonfire... These adventurers include: A great grey wolf named Sif, who is accompanied by a rugged, but tall and sturdy knight named Artorias. A band of clerics, by the names of Petrus, Rhea, Vince, and Nico. Two firekeepers, one in a beautiful set of brass armor, and another in some dingy robes by the name of Anastacia of Astora. Two brave knights sitting on a small stone bench. One of them is wearing chainmail by the name of Crestfallen. The other is in an elite knight set by the name of Oscar of Astora. Two odd looking fellows, one with a helmet that has horns on it, along with what seems to be a set of glasses by the name of Domhnall of Zena. The other is in large black robes with his arms at a 90 degree angle in both directions by the name of Oswald of Karim. A lonely knight sitting far next to a well. He wears a set of brass, much like the firekeeper, however he goes by the name of Lautrec. He plays around with a sunlight medal in his hands. A more incandescent adventurer stands in the beautiful sunlight. His arms are stretched high into the sky as he absorbs the sun's energy. He goes by the name of Solaire of Astora. Two undead merchants are hidden behind a tree. It seems as if they haven't seen other adventurers in a long time. One of them is sitting down while stroking his hand across the top of a wooden tub. The other stands idly by with different colored mosses in her hands. Two strong, loving, and brave knights stand close together. Their armor would remind one of an onion. They hold large greatswords called Zweihanders, and they go by the names of Seigmeyer and Seiglinde of Catarina. A band of blacksmiths have taken up post near the bonfire as well. They chat about the beautiful and fascinating embers they've found on their journey. One looks to be from Vinheim, by the name of Rickert. Another repeats the phrase "Strong I am, forge I can" as he attempts to speak with the other blacksmiths. He's a large creature, a giant to be exact. Another blacksmith looks ready for a fight with his fists up. Coming across such a fighter would be your demise. He goes by the name of Andre of Astora, and he is one of the best smiths known to the land of Lordran. And lastly, a smith who looks as if he came out of a thousand year tomb chats along with the others. He holds a large pickaxe, and goes by the name of Vamos. Another odd fellow is peculiarly far away from Lautrec and the band of clerics. He glances at them constantly to make sure they haven't moved. He wields a winged spear and an eagle shield. He's been known as the Unbreakable, the Trusty, the Hyena, and a variety of other names. If you wanted to be exact, you'd call him Patches in the end. Yet again, there is another fellow who can't seem to find a group to be a part of. He's a traveler and a trader who goes by the name of Shiva of the East. He belongs to a hunting covenant, and is an extremely loyal companion. You notice a peculiar shadow behind him, but you can't seem to make out what exactly it is. You glance around one more time to notice a few more folks: One of them towers above the rest. Out of anyone here, he seems the most intimidating out of anyone else. He goes by the name of Iron Tarkus. If there's anyone you wouldn't want to mess with, it would be him. There is an exotic fellow standing nearby as well. He seems to be from a distant land, and you haven't had the chance to know him a whole lot. He wears a top hat, and goes by the name of Marvelous Chester. The first part of his name doesn't exactly surprise you, as he is covered in fancy intricacies. You notice yet another exotic adventurer nearby. She goes by the name of Witch Beatrice. Nobody knows a whole lot about her, but you never know, she could definitely put up a good fight. Two pyromancers stand nearby. One of them plays with small chaos orbs in her palms. She goes by the name of Quelana of Izalith, and the other is her disciple by the name of Laurentius of the Great Swamp. He attempts to make chaos orbs of his own, but seems to fail. You notice a very interesting fellow near the cliffside who is covered in thorns. And surprisingly enough, his armor isn't the only thing covered in thorns. His sword and shield have the same prickly thorns. He goes by the name of Kirk. As we get closer to knowing the crowd, you still see some new faces. One is of a beautiful princess who wears shiny robes. Her name is Dusk of Oolacile, and you don't know much about her origin. As if there hasn't been enough weird people around, you notice yet another odd figure. He wears large red robes, and is wielding a Tin Banishment Catalyst. He goes by the name of Ingward, and he used to be a guardian of the seal. A familiar figure stands nearby. He wears a beautiful set of Paladin armor, and wields two extremely rare tools. One is called Grant, a large greathammer, and the other is a shield called Sanctus which yields a calming healing effect. He goes by the name of Paladin Leeroy. You notice an odd woman with a sack over her head. She wields a large Butcher Knife. You start to rethink if Tarkus was as intimidating as when you originally saw him. She goes by the name of Maneater Mildred. Her name gives you conniptions. You notice 'something' standing nearby. You can't tell if your eyes deceive you or not, but there seems to be a large boulder holding a dragon's tooth nearby. How peculiar! Also, there seems to be a disgusting creature covered in eggs nearby. Nobody seems to want to get close to him. You also notice an extremely interesting fellow. He is covered in crystals, and he wears a very unique set of armor. He wields a crystal sword, along with a shield covered in crystals as well. Nobody has a clue as to how he got here, but he certainly looks really cool. You notice a large giant standing near Artorias. He has seemed to gain a large respect for the brave Knight. He wields a large greatbow, and he is known as Hawkeye Gough for his extreme precision. A slim figure stands near Artorias as well. She is known as the Lord's Blade Ciaran. She has also developed a large respect for Artorias. She wields two interesting curved swords unlike any other. One is laced in silver, the other in gold. And lastly, you notice two sorcerers standing beside one another. One wears a large hat that covers most of his face. The other seems to be his disciple. The infamous Big Hat Logan is accompanied by Griggs of Vinheim. You decide to head towards the newly found cave. A skull lantern hangs on a small handle next to the entrance of the cave. However, before you enter, you realize that a strong band of warriors from all kinds of distant lands is sitting down at the Firelink bonfire. You certainly can't ignore them, and you can't do this alone. You decide to walk back to the bonfire in hopes of recruiting a small team. Who will you take with you on this incredible journey? (Pick 8 individuals, and explain why you chose them based on their strengths or their personalities!) [link] [comments] |
