    I DID IT

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 08:02 PM PST

I finally beat DS1!! I'm so happy right now, fucking loved this game. I'm pretty much new to soulsborne, have only finished DS3, and I'm pretty torn to which one I like more. Also recorded all my deaths just in case anyone was curious: NON-boss deaths: (364) Asylum Demon: (0) Taurus Demon: (1) Bell Gargoyle: (28) Capra Demon: (8) Gaping Dragon: (0) Chaos Witch Queelag: (6) Moonlight Butterfly: (2) Great Grey Wolf Sif: (6) Iron Golem: (2) Ornstein and Smough: (186) Dark Sun, Gwyndolin: (3) Stray Demon: (0) Four Kings: (14) Pinwheel: (1) Nito: (8) Ceaseless Discharge: (3) Demon Firesage: (2) Centipede Demon:(0) Bed Of Chaos: (6) Seath The Scaleless: (0) Sanctuary Guardian: (3) Knight Artorias: (4) Manus: (32) Black Dragon Kalaamet: (35) Crossbreed Priscilla: (0) Gwyn (no parry): (15)

Kind of curious about any outliers in y'alls playthroughs. Mine was definitely O and S; racked up 186 because I was using an underleveled lighting weapon :(. Also yes, i died to pinwheel; don't laugh too hard ;). Also kind of weird, I decided to forgo shields/parrying in general.

I'd like to thank the devs for creating a series that helped me coping with schizophrenia

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 08:22 AM PST

2015 was a really, really rough year for me. I dropped out of uni, applied for another degree, lived for a bit in my parents' flat after they moved out to a small village close to my hometown. Lots of sleepless nights, cigarettes, and lack of feeling I have control over my life. On one sunny day, when I was smoking a cigarette, suddenly a huge sensation of my soul being shattered to pieces haunted me. I told my mum I want to go to the psychiatrist because I was really worried because I have never felt that in my life ever. Fast forward to couple of weeks later, stuff like looking over my shoulders, feeling like people are watching me, that I will be punished started happening. Couple of days later I started having these symptoms I developed a grandiose religious delusion when I would believe God has chosen me to watch the endless battle between the good and evil, while also blaming me for every single evil thing that has happened in the world. I was shaking almost constantly, mumbled various things, speaking incoherently - parents thought I was taking some drugs which wasn't true. I was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and the illness ruined my life and the ability to maintain close relationships and education.

During the period of my psychosis I was just doing all this messy shit like going on forums and talk about God, various things that I believed people possessed - like some kind of a core that was in every person's insides that was rotating constantly, and when the rotating stops the person dies. Lots of various crazy shit. I wasn't really aggressive, did not have any problems with law, I was too scared to go out to people. I got my medication, started taking it, but it made me kind of a zombie, and I still felt like so much was taken away from me that I would need to re-gain and rebuild.

So, I came back to playing video games. I loaded up Dark Souls, an old favourite. And I felt various similarities and correspondences with my illness. I thought going hollow was like developing psychosis. I had experience with the game before, but I've found that focusing on the roll times, attacks, exploring the world was so helpful to me. It helped me get away from my delusions, helped me in interacting with the world, and helped me with emotional investment in what was happening. I was also watching a lot of drag queen related stuff which made me smile and forget about all the crazy stuff that was happening to me.

I really felt so much connection to the whole concept of undead, the fallen gods, everything that made the series so special. When I was out of my game, I would constantly remind myself not to go hollow, to pull through my life. I tried to go to university again and resume my degree, but couple of months later it turned out it's not gonna work out. Tried again a year later, still no luck. My illness will be with me throughout my whole life and nothing will ever change it.

I played almost all the games from the series while being psychotic and in the aftermath of psychosis, which was arguably the more difficult state than the actual psychosis. Fast forward to now - I feel pretty good, even if I have episodes once in a while, but they are short lived thanks to the meds that I take. I still have a lot of therapy to go through, still have to regain and rebuild my personality that I lost during my psychosis - I feel like I will never be the same person again. I am a newborn being now. It was so hard, but I consider Dark Souls as the series that really helped me regain touch with reality for some reason. The action packed gameplay was really helpful for me to stop thinking about my delusions and focus on the here and now. I know most of the success came from the meds, but I consider gaming as some kind of therapy. It's crazy how some stuff works like that.

I still have negative symptoms. I still need to build a sense of worthiness, purpose, inspiration. I still have delusions once in a while, I still become paranoid when I am really stressed out. But I know I will never go hollow again.

edit: thanks for the silver, kind stranger!

    Can I just say...

I've been browsing this sub for a bit recently after getting really back into Dark Souls, and I'm surprised to see how many people are still on their first runs, and still experiencing this game for the first time again. It's great to see this game's still kicking (and also it's quite funny seeing everyone's first experiences, we all went through it once!)

I beat smough and Ornstein for the first time! But now I have more questions than answers. Smoughs soul said he was the only knight in Anor Londo so if that was an illusion of Ornstein where did the real one go

    Finally...

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 02:02 AM PST

On my first playthrough and O & S has been the bane of my existence for about two weeks now. Ive been on this goddamn fight for countless hours. For some reason i was using the lightning spear because it did lots of damage to the fat boy, but you had to get super close to even use it. Decided to change to the demon spear just to see what a differnent weapon would do, and idk why i didnt try switching weapons sooner. Made the fight a hell of alot easier. Just sat barely out of reach of speedy bois attacks and could hit him with ease. But that run all the way back from the first bonfire all the way to the boss room will be burned into my mind for all eternity.

I think I might have learned all there is to know about this game. Tell me something I dont know yet.

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:25 PM PST

For example, how kicking and falling on enemies with the orange charred ring does a tiny amount of fire damage.

Tell me some of your most outlandish or interesting lore theories!

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 11:17 PM PST

I was watching a vid from Saint_Riot where he talked about how he feels Velka was majorly responsible for every player action in the game.

I thought it was super interesting, but I've noticed a lot of lore discussion involving ideas that aren't generally accepted can get shot down pretty hard in this community.

None of that here! Tell me your wildest theories, your most interesting hypothesis and ideas - I wanna hear it all!

    Edit: grammar

Okay so I got a bit confused while saving the Fire Keeper.

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 07:07 PM PST

When I was in Anor Londo I got the prompt to invade using the black eye orb, I beat him very quickly, and then instead of going straight to Orenstien and Smough, decided to go back to farm some Titanite Chunks.

On the way back I upgraded my Estus at the other Fire Keeper in Anor Londo...anyway, I do some farming and then get back to Firelink. Except shes not there anymore, I read online something about having to restore using the Fire Keeper Soul...but I don't have one. So I either used her Soul to upgrade my Estus flask which I didn't know how to do, or I somehow didn't pick up the item after invading, anyone know what I did wrong here?

My first adventure in the DLC

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 03:38 PM PST

I recently Got Dark Souls remastered on the switch this is my first playthrough ever, I played through the game trying different builds and finally settled on a battle mage character. I obtained the lordvessel, and with some clues from a veteran friend, found dusk, and the broken pendant and made my way into the DLC.

Holy hell, what an experience that was.

Being ambushed by a boss almost immediately completely took me by surprise, and I managed to defeat it after a few tries.

Progression took me to Artorias and he was my most difficult challenge yet, but after some blood, sweat, and a few tears, I took him down too, and died at the same time. It counted and I was elated.

Even further profession and I hit a roadblock. Kalameet.

This boss, this dragon, absolutely, unequivocally, is the most painful experience I have ever felt in dark souls, or so I thought.

Until I beat him and stumbled upon Manus.

Everything I said about kalameet was intensified here. Even getting to him was a pain, and after every death I had in the boss fight, I died twice getting back to him.

I shouted, I swore, I got angry. I tried and tried and tried.

Finally, after what must have been about 100 tries, and with no spells left, just my sword. I defeated him.

In that moment I let out a big sigh of relief, and I genuinely felt proud and happy.

Dark souls is a hard game. And I love every single moment of it. Even at the cost of my sanity.

Now to find the last 2 Lord souls and beat the game!

Why has the Fire Keeper died? Among other questions from a noob.

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 02:39 PM PST

Hey, I consider myself a pro at Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne and Sekiro. A while back I got Dark Souls Remastered for the PC hoping to experience the original Souls. I quit for a while because I found it very slow, and not what I expected. I've got back into it, and let's just say I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

I have many questions, however. I guess that this game started the trend of Soulsborne titles having rather lacklustre tutorials. For reference, I've rung the first Bell of Awakening, the bosses I've beaten are the Asylum Demon, Taurus Demon, Bell Gargoyles and Moonlight Butterfly. My questions are below:

    1. My Fire Keeper has just died, the one at Firelink. This came as a shock as I only interacted with her once, I have no idea how to revive her. How do I go about this?
    2. I've been progressing through Blightown currently, but to no avail. I can't find a bonfire in the area, all paths seem to go to dead ends. Can anyone help me with this?
    3. What's humanity, exactly, and how does the Estus system work? Sometimes you get given 5, sometimes 10, and occasionally I get 11. Any explanation?
    4. What progression route should I take, I know this game has lots of paths and I want to get the most out of it, I can do repeat runs if I miss any area or boss. Also what are the recommended levels for said areas?

Thanks for any help, I'm just really confused. I do like this game, but it's hard to approach.

I found a couple of speedruns that started with black firebombs, yet they were able to use the master key???

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 04:06 PM PST

The speedruns used the black firebombs to kill the asylum demon quickly. However, they were also able to open the shortcut between New Londo ruins and valley of drakes. How were they able to do both?

    Suggestions on leveling a pyromancer

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 12:13 AM PST

Hello guys. Today I reached level 50 on my pyromancer. It's my first playthrough. My stats are as follows: vitality 25, attunement 16, endurance 30, strength 20, dexterity 12, resistance 12, intelligence 10, faith 8. My attunement slots are used with great combustion, two combustions and fire orb. The gear I'm using is the gold-hemmed black hood / cloak / gloves / skirt, with the rust and wolf rings. Also a knight shield and drake sword for melee attacks. Ph and I have leveled my pyromance glove to ascended+2.

I just rang the second bell in quelaag's domain and I saw that the fortress near undead parish opened so I'm guessing I must go there. Before doing it though I have been farming souls like crazy and I was wondering whether this build I have so far would be enough to get me through zen fortress (I believe it is called thus). What are your thoughts? Any opinion is welcomed!

And getting ahead of those answering things like "that depends what you want to do", let me add: what would you do, were you playing as a pyromancer?

    Thanks in advance!

    Just beat my first playthrough!

    Posted: 14 Dec 2019 10:16 PM PST

Finished the Artorias DLC and the last of the main game just now. I can see why people tout this one as the best DS game, but i personally felt it kind of drags in the second half with the Lord Souls.

Last two souls games for me to beat are DS2 and Demon's Souls but im taking a looooooong break before then.

(Also I'd like to extend some personal fuck yous to Manus, Kalameet, and the Four Kings)
