Which boss is the hardest for you after a long break?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 01:28 PM PDT

Seems like many of us are veterans. Which boss would give you the hardest time if you had to come back right now?

Mine would be Elena. Fume, Sir Alonne and Ivory King was harder on first try, but I remember having a hard time mastering her on subsequent playthroughs.

    Are the DLCs... bad?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 06:24 AM PDT

So I just finished off the sunken king today (excluding that trio fight because fuck that) and am at Brume Tower right now. Most of the sunken king stuff I found really frustrating. The time between bonfires was really long a lot of the time and the enemies were all super strong and came in droves. Elana as a boss was pretty underwhelming. I enjoyed Sinh at least, probably the best part of that one.

So now I'm fighting my way through Brume and I get to this room full of axe or sword welding skeleton guys and a huge guy with a fuck off bug club that spits fire. There's nowhere for me to go in here and they end up hanging up on me repeatedly. Brume is a gorgeous area but this is just frustrating me again, something that only happened in Iron Keep and Black Gulch in the base game's content. It's a real shame because I've really been enjoying DS2 this past couple of weeks but these DLCs are kinda souring the experience a little.

Any thoughts? Do they get better? Should I just stop and play 3 now?

So after years of hating on this game and just quitting midway through I'm dusting off my PS3 and going to get through it.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 02:40 PM PDT

I am determined to play through this as blind as I reasonably can.

Are there any tips you can give without spoiling anything huge? I am an avid DS1 lover and I remember from my first experience with 2 that you can't just go around bashing on chests.

What else do I need to know about mechanics to not just rage quit?

    Finally enjoying myself

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 07:06 AM PDT

Dark Souls 1 was my first. The huge interconnected world, the builds, the atmosphere, the loneliness and desolation. I created every kind of build just to enjoy each aspect of it a different way. Years later I still go back, but, the times I play are now interspersed with returns to DS3 too. DS3 had me hooked just the same. It was faster, with more detail and better bosses. Even the gimmicky fights I still enjoyed purely because of their presentation. But, it was never enough to stop me going back to the first. I was addicted to the loneliness.

Dark Souls 2 I admittedly avoided upon hearing its reception. Heard so much about what they'd changed like the lighting, parry, power stancing, and the dreaded soul memory. I was almost angry because I thought - ignorantly - they had ruined my chance to get more of what I loved. In reality I had forgotten the reason I had originally enjoyed dark souls 1. How unforgiving it was.

I expected to start straight in with my knowledge of the first game paving my way to victory. For some reason, this time it bothered me that I was having trouble. "But, I'm so good in the first one. Wtf is this?". I didn't see a challenge or obstacles to overcome, just changes I didn't agree with and didn't want to be inconvenienced by. Ignoring the whole point of the games existence. Why the fuck would they make it the same? I'd have no trouble and this game would be meaningless compared to the first. Alas, even with that mindset I wasn't improving and was slowly becoming more and more impatient. I gave up. "Maybe this game just isn't for me."

5 years later, it was 9pm last night that I had just completed another run of Dark Souls 3. Nothing special, just a naked longswordsman. I didn't have the urge to start another round or to get stuck into DaS1's slower, more strategic combat. Fuck it, I'll give SotFS a go.

5 years I deprived myself of this game. As of last night, Last Giant, Pursuer, dragonrider, old dragon slayer and flexile sentry are gone. Why didn't I like this game? And is a long sword a viable weapon to use throughout?

Apologies for the wall of text. I'm just very happy to finally share the love others have for this game.

Fume Knight was a really cool boss, but didn't really measure up to the hype.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 01:14 PM PDT

I finished my DS2 playthrough a few days ago and am now taking on the DLC. This is where things get exciting because now everything ahead of me is brand new content I haven't experienced before. I tried to receive as few spoilers as possible, but one thing I couldn't avoid was the Fume Knight. I knew he was coming, and I knew he was a big deal. I'd constantly hear DS fans say 'I didn't really like DS2, but Fume Knight.... Fume Knight's one of my favorite bosses' or similar sentiments.

Needless to say, I was stoked. So far, I already felt like the DLC pretty much delivers with more memorable boss fights than the base game. I genuinely enjoyed everyone in Sunken King - yes, even the gank fest optional boss. I also really loved the area. It was really beautiful and the pseudo-puzzles made it fun to figure out and navigate. My only complaints with Sunken King would be needing a bow for progression and how much it sucks to not know beforehand and have to start from scratch - and the annoying run to the optional boss at the end of it. I could've done without the bugs that break your gear, too, as I never thought that was a fun or even okay mechanic but they aren't the biggest deal.

Then I get to the Iron King DLC and already I'm just not enthralled by what I'm looking at. The place was a maze and I got lost several times. Aesthetically, it's a bit dull but there are some cool concepts and layout ideas. Blue Smelter Demon was fun, even if just a reskin he at least managed to be a reskin of one of the more interesting bosses in the base game.

There were a few 'lol this area is difficult because ganking!' sections that represent so much of what can be frustrating about DS2, and those phantom armor enemies are an utter pain just because of how goofy and strange their moveset is. There's also the most cowardly invader in probably all of DS2.

Surely Fume Knight would make up for all of it, right?
But I'll be honest, as much as I enjoyed the fight it just didn't stand out as special to me. The dual wielding greatswords were a cool touch, and dodging the combos he creates with them was admittedly fun. Plus, he dishes out massive damage even though I was a tad overleveled (probably?) so he presents a solid challenge, but one that doesn't feel unfair because your bonfire is actually pretty close.

I kept waiting for a phase two, but all it really did was add two new fire based attacks that admittedly caught me off guard a few times but weren't all that troubling.

I know people will disagree with me because these bosses had some annoying traits to them, but I genuinely thought Elana and Sinh were way more fun and engaging fights. Hell, even Sir Alonne was a pretty awesome fight albeit frustrating if not just for the fluidity of his moves and how tedious it is to get to him after a failed attempt.

To me, Fume Knight felt a little too much like Smelter Demon but with an extra sword for slight combo potential. Which is okay, but you rematch (sort of) Smelter before him so you kind of get used to that playstyle and then it just feels like more of the same.

Love his design. Love his weapons. Enjoyed the fight, but he just wasn't as exciting as I thought he'd be.

Anyone else feel he's a bit overhyped?
Can someone just explain to me what you like about him? I understand I may not magically become a fan, but I'm sure there's merit to his popularity and I'd love to hear some outside positive opinions. I've never heard anyone break down the fight because I've been avoiding spoilers, so all I see is 'FUME KNIGHT IS AWESOME' but I never hear the 'Why'. Now that I've beaten him and have no fear of spoilers, I'd love to hear the 'Why' - or, if you're with me on thinking he was a bit underwhelming feel free to drop your thoughts on that, too. I'm curious to hear what the community thinks.

tl;dr - Fume Knight was hyped over and over again before I could reach him and he just didn't feel like that memorable of a fight.

Easy Way to Get Through Frigid Outskirts

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 08:11 AM PDT

To easily cheese the most objectively bullshit area in video game history, all you need is any decent physical block greatshield, Warmth, and some herbs/crimson water. If low on Strength, 2-hand the greatshield with a low-ish Strength requirement Twin Dragon or Pate's greatshield (90% physical block is perfectly fine, the stability is what you're after). If you've farmed twinklies off the Archdrakes, you should also have plenty of water to drink, or simply amassed herbs from not needing to use them. If you're a Faith build, carry healing miracles.

Now, just befriend Vengarl by beating his body into a pulp and talking with him again and you're good to go. Go to the circle of stone tablets and summon Feeva, O'Hara, and Vengarl, then run to the rightmost side of the area. This will greatly minimize the reindeer fuckers and also on the way leads to the Ring of the Living for your multiplayer fashion needs (you can also rush to the first building for the Mirrah Hat since aside from those 2 items, nothing is worth the bullshit).

And then...just block. No, really. The Reindeer fuckers always arrive charging at you with a wonky hitbox horn attack, and it's much safer to block it than attempt rolling. After that, let your kill squad gank the shit out of those Rudolph rejects and constantly heal them every 2 bouts (1 bout if 2 reindeer arrive). Feeva thankfully also has infinite casts of Sacred Oath as your team buffer and can occasionally also use Soothing Sunlight but don't rely on her for the healing more so than for her throwing around infinite lightning like a maniac.

Once you hug the rightmost wall and find a cliff, follow it (and grab that fashion ring) to the path to Lud and Zallen, heal up your hit squad to full, and then enter the boss...while just blocking and maybe throwing in a few safe hits on the weaker cats' ass. The reason for the constant healing on the way isn't just to keep the summons healthy, but also so let them conserve their own estus uses (well, not in Vengarl's case but his hp is insane). They should be able to whoop Lud's and Zallen's asses on their own in this way, albeit if you're a super high Faith build you can be extra sure of it by giving some Soothing Sunlight support.

This should allow anyone, if you really, REALLY want the Loyce Greatsword and shield early, to obtain them as early as before Drangleic Castle since because the Shrine of Winter without the Frozen Flower sends you directly to the Frigid Outskirts. Lud and Zallen are also visible without the Priestess Eye, unlike Aava, so no need to go to Eulem Loyce. That's right: you can quickly Agape rush the Loyce GS with minimal effort rather than having your ass be widened from constant abuse by using the power of friendship...and cheese. Lots and lots of cheese. Friendship cheese.

What is your favorite thing about dark souls?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 06:13 AM PDT

I feel like there's a lot of things that makes the souls series amazing, and want to know what you all like about it, and share mine as well.

For me it has to be replayability. The souls series(well, mostly the first two really) has some insane replayability. Be it how NG+ is made, or just how much you can do with the weapon and combat systems in the game, it's always been a joy for me to go through each game multiple times, usually restarting midway through to test what I can do even further each time. I started my first run doing a quality halberd build, then tried out powerstancing (I then proceeded to respec and use ultra greatswords), a mage build that used the rapier, a hexer that had dark weapon and dark orb before last giant, a greatshield build that also had a poison butterfly shield, and now a cleric that weilds the insanely powerful disk chime before the pursuer. Dark Souls for me has always been about going from absolute confusion, to complete understanding of every nook and cranny you can find, I did this especially so in dark souls 1, getting a very powerful buffed uchigatana before bell gargoyles, or getting the strongest spells I can as fast as I can, and then seeing how low of a level I can beat each boss at. Dark Souls 2 just has so much of this that it's insane. You can kill the rotten as your second boss, you can literally get through half the game without killing a single boss. This allows for so many build options, so many challenges, so much variety, and I absolutely love it.

    Finally beat Fume Knight

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 05:46 AM PDT

Beat him with blacksteel +10 no shield. I was also lucky enough that he didn't use his AoE attack which just one shots me most of the time.

Imma take a break by using my shield halberd character for a while now lmao.

    About weapon movesets

Why do some weapons hit the ground? Scimitar is completely unusable because of this and it was my favourite weapon in ds1. Or am I doing something wrong?

Almost done, but have a couple questions

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 09:06 AM PDT

I've almost finished the game, I just need to take out Vendrick and Nashandra. I have a quality build but I've been using the Large Club+10 because it does so much damage. I hate the way it looks though. My secondary is the Arced Sword+5 but it doesn't do as much damage. Question one:

    • Is there a cool looking weapon (Not unrealistically over-sized like the large club) that would match the large club for damage?

I would like to use some bonfire ascetics to farm souls and do some bosses over again, but I don't know which bonfires bring bosses back. I also want to know if using a bonfire ascetic now, makes NG harder in those areas. Question two:

    • Do the bonfire ascetics reset the whole area or just near the bonfire/is there a certain radius around the bonfire that it affects?

How difficult is Earthen Peak ranked?

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 02:51 PM PDT

First playthough, I'm at the third bonfire in Earthen Peak and I'm like, is this place one of the hardest areas in DS2? I feel like I'm overleveled at 80 and this place is still absolutely slapping my shit and stomping my balls here. I consider myself somewhat seasoned in souls games but the combo of these fire broads and all these sudden drops everywhere and all these damn ninja turtles having 2 hit poison is crushing me. Burned the swamp mill also, seriously only made it like 15% easier. This has gotta be like top 5 harder areas in the game, right?

About that awesome stuff we call dual wield.

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 02:31 PM PDT

Is there a greater point to it, beyond having access to two different move sets? Is it just cause it feels cool?

The normal RPG mechanic for dual wield is normally increased attack speed, but I don't feel like that actually applies in dark souls.

So,reddit, what are your thoughts and arguments for or against dual wielding?

    Cheers!

    Accidentally killed the stone trader

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 02:17 PM PDT

So I was trying out a new staff and accidentally did dark fog hex by her (it traveled farther then I expected). And then she started trying to slash me. At first I ran to rest at the bon fire but when I left she started trying to fight me again so I killed her. What are the consequences of killing her? I never bought things from her anyway but I feel bad for the black smith now since that's his daughter lol. I heard about grave stones of npcs but haven't found one for her.
