Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

I just learned that the Taurus Demon is an optional boss.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 09:52 AM PDT

Started the game with the Masterkey, went from Firelink Shrine to Darkroot Basin and from there I normally go straight through the Haveltower into the Taurus bossfight, but not today. Today I went to Andre of Astora instead. From there I went backwards to were I normally come from had I fought the Taurus Demon.

The amount of paths that the Masterkey unlocks is crazy and great!

I finished Dark Souls 1 recently and my god, this game is fucking awesome.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 09:18 AM PDT

First of all, this was my 2nd From Software game after playing Sekiro at its launch. I had gotten a nice 200 hours into that game and figured why not start the iconic dark souls. Got the remastered super cheap on steam due to regional pricing and sale.

I had done a dex build with uchigatana for the most part and finally a gold tracer by the end. Loved that dagger its really good.

My favourite areas have to be Blighttown and Sen's Fortress. Now, I know many people hate these places, but they're so well crafted. Yes, there are some wonky killboxes in some areas of blighttown but the overall creepiness and the Indiana Jones style dodging fucking bigass axes was so much fun. The enemies are easily parryable to compensate for the narrow spaces and as long as you don't freak out (hesitation is defeat) you will overcome it.

Sekiro made me very paranoid about common enemies so the longbow was my best friend. Luring out enemies with it and taking them out one by one until I am comfortable with their layouts was very cool.

Favourite bosses would be Manus and Sif. Manus was my favourite boss, he killed me a lot, but once I figured out how to completely avoid damage for his roar attack, everything just fell in place for a satisfying win. Sif's boss was so cool and sad at the same time. Where else do you see a fucking wolf swinging a big ass greatsword from side to side?

Things I hated were O & S. Fuck. Those. Two. Just fuck them. Soloing them, especially for that leo ring, no. Just no. I had to summon for help. Also hated those big skeleton dogs in tomb of the giants.

The best part about this game is how there are so many different sceneries and how they so beautifully interconnected, unlike open world games where the map is bigger but you see the same kinda shit everywhere, here you see a run down housing area, a forest with a talking cat, catacombs with skeletons, a god city with an amazing chest and a trap, demon ruins filled with lava and more chests, booby trapped fortress, a dark and possibly semen covered poisoned civilisation.

All of this with just the right amount of exploration and an amazing lore connecting everything.

    *This shit good. *

PS: Played this game on keyboard and mouse and it is not difficult on keyboard and mouse.

Is playing the original versions of DS1 and 2 worth it?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 12:54 AM PDT

    Hello!

I randomly decided to pick up DS3 in the Steam Sale a few weeks ago and after being a unsure about Dark Souls games, but loving Sekiro, I decided to give it a chance. I loved it!

Eventhough I had DS1 and DS2 original versions, I thought I should probably upgrade to their latest versions and picked up Remastered (DS1) and SotFS (DS2) and played through both of them. Well, I played them in reverse and I'm currently stuck on Gwyndolin (sp?) on DS:R but so far, love love loving it!

But my YouTube recommendations, after searching for a few tips for combat or bosses I got stuck on, I'm seeing a lot of "Why Remastered sucks!" or "Why SOTFS IS BAD!". I didn't click on them as I was mid playing through SOTFS and I've also not finished Remastered, but I was curious if I should be playing the originals (seeing as I have them)?

Is it worth me playing them or are the differences not that huge that my experience of playing the "remastered" versions of these games is still good?

Are the changes so small that only really hardcore players would notice them or would these changes be a big enough impact to be worth playing through again?

I don't really care to abuse bugs or use cheese methods, so if those have just been "patched out" of the remastered versions, that's whatever to me.

Anyway, thanks for the advice in advance. I hope they release Bloodborne on PC as I've really like to play through this too! I can't believe I waited all this time to play through a Dark Souls game. I'm so upset with myself!

TLDR; Playing Remastered (DS1) and finished SotFS DS2 - Are the original versions of these games worth playing through as they are different or are they basically the same? Or are the changes reletively small and not worth replaying through the originals just to experience them?

No spoilers if possible for DS1 - I've not completed it :)

I just obtained the Obsidian Greatsword and it's the most excited I've been in this game

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 06:09 PM PDT

After completing DS2, I bought DS1 in the 360 and I've been having a blast. Best game ever, no contest. I bought the Artorias of the Abyss DLC after NG+3 and found Blackdragon Kalameet - one of the hardest bosses in the game. I read somewhere that by cutting its tail you get the Obsidian Greatsword, and it became my mission to obtain it.

After more tries that I would like to admit, I finally cut its damn tail, and it's the happiest I've been (more than defeating Manus, Artorias, O&S or even Gwyn himself). I don't even intend to main it, it's just the fact that I did it what fills me. Praise the sun and my Claymore.

I just realized the stray demon is...

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 06:35 AM PDT

At the start of the game! When you are freed by oscar and walking through the hallway at the start, the demon you see is the stray demon! I always thought it was the asylum demon. Now that's great game design! Showing players a boss which they wont encounter until far into the game, or at least after taurus... yeah.

    I did it

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 12:51 AM PDT

I have officially gotten all achievements in DSR. Knights honor took the longest because I really thought the Abyss greatsword (from artorias's soul) was the same as the cursed greatsword and took me a few hours of scouring the wiki to realize why I hadn't gotten the achievement! Took me 250 in game hours up to NG+8. Currently SL231.

My favorite achievements to get were definitely the weapon ascensions. I really like the DSR weapon ascension system and enjoy fiddling with different branches and where to use what. Took me until NG+6 to realize that u can use a divine weapon on the skeletons that gank you during the nito fight. I also still have no clue when/where is best to use occult weapons, or what weapons (if any) can do more than 150 dmg to the crystal hollows. I have resorted to dawning my pyromancy flame and attuning all my favorite pyromancies to clear the archives.

I haven't even visited to DLC since NG+ so I think that will be fun, tho NG+ manus traumatized me a bit. Gonna try for the obsidian greatsword but tail weapons are so hard for me!

Im off to puck up my DS3 run, stuck on the Abysswatchers and took a break for a few weeks to get the all spells, miracles, pyrmoancies, and rare weapons achievements in DSR. Wish me luck.

    My first time playing DS1

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 08:33 PM PDT

    I started playing DS1 today...

So I used to play DS3 Till I got bored after so I beat it and it's dlcs.

I'll be posting everyday to keep track of my progress

Day 1- I picked knight but I notice I'm fat rolling I tried taking armor off but the game doesn't like that.

I got a hang for the controls once again.

I went to the first boss and noticed I do 4 dmg like wth. So I looked around and found a exit. After I got some good gear I jumped on the demon. I don't know where to go now so I'm going to look up a quick guide

    Ornstein and Smough against us

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 10:42 PM PDT

I thought it would be a great idea to start a new challenge this quarantine and to stop getting my xbox 360 dustier than it already is. So the first thing that came in to my mind was to finally have the courage to play for my first time Dark Souls.

I have it for free due to a xbox live gold game of the month thingy (~6 maybe 7 years ago?), but never really played it because of how nervous and scared the game made me feel. I was younger ofc and never into this kind of gloomy video games. Anyhow i gave it a try and fell in love with the game. It's by nature hard to know what to do, since you have no specific path to go to, everything looks so hopeless, and most people who are sane don't expect anything from what remains of their "lives" (except my best buddies Knight Solaire and Siegmeyer of Catarina!).

Now, basically most of the times I've been playing solo and every now and then I see the phantoms of other people. Coop is dead and when I asked my friends to help me out, the game just made it so difficult to get summoned or viceversa.

However, this morning I gave it a last chance, just to make me feel that I tried my best to summon my friend (we've been trying to join each other's worlds for almost two weeks) and it finally worked! I was so ecstatic to see my friend's phantom running around Anor Londo hahaha.

I decided to summon my homie Solaire and went right on to defeat Ornstein & Smough, we defeated them (first Smough and then Ornstein obviously 🙄) with no problem at all and with the three of us with almost all our health bar intact. I felt invincible with both of them by my side, the online experience, well the idea of helping and being helped in Dark Souls made me feel that I wasn't all by myself in Lordran.

Sorry for the long post but I'm truly in love with DS :)

I know this might be common knowledge, but if it isn't I figured I might share it. I just noticed that if you restore your humanity then if you are standing still you can hear yourself breathing.

    Forest Hunter Covenant

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 03:53 AM PDT

I was spamming through her dialogue and accidentally hit "NO" as the answer to her question, and it seems like Alvina is one of those NPC's that doesn't give you the option of reversing your decision.

Is there a way to reverse this or am I locked out of the covenant for this entire NG cycle?

Tip for the Bed of Chaos fight

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 09:16 PM PDT

I know this may be common knowledge for many, but I wanted to inform newer players or uninformed players:

The Bed of Chaos fight can be handled more easily if you quit out of the game after breaking each of its roots. The game saves progress made in the fight, so quitting out will spawn you outside the fog wall, with any broken branches remaining broken.

The same trick can be used to despawn boulders in Sens Fortress, or any enemies coming after you (i.e. the golems that attack you in Darkroot Basin while trying to fight the hydra).

Is it cheating a little? Kind of. Is it faster? Hell yeah. Will it save you much potential annoyance? Also hell yeah.

    dark souls 3 question

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 03:02 AM PDT

hey gang, tryna prove my friend wrong here. In Dark souls 3 there's the random estus gain on kill, that does not go for phantoms correct? phantoms only regain estus upon defeat of another phantom?

Can you fall damage cancel in DSR?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 02:59 AM PDT

Currently trying to make my way to pinwheel as quick as possible as the build I wanna try is centered around one of the mask drops. Idk if I'm doing it wrong as I've never done it before but I fall, plunge attack and then try to quit out as I land and have attempted to do it just before I land but the game seems to cancel the quit out if you do.

I also looked up another skip where you roll continuously as you fall and then the iframes save you but I can only get my guy to roll the once.

Giant dads, Havel moms, cosplay characters all welcomed. Newbies totally allowed if you want a cool lil environment to test out player connectivity or just how online dark souls works. Praise it!
