Dark Souls 2 Ancient Dragon encounter(but its Seath)

Things you don't notice for a long time and then when you finally notice, you feel stupid

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:44 AM PDT

I've played through SOTFS at least a dozen times by now and there's still little things that I notice that just seemed to escape me before.

Like I recently just realized the the Simpleton's Spice is called 'simpleton' spice because it lowers the intelligence requirement for spells. A simpleton is the opposite of an intelligent person. And Skeptic's spice lowers faith requirement. Skepticism is the opposite of faith. Duh - how was this in front of me all this time and it didn't click? Now I feel stupid.

Any other things that didn't click with people? Or things that were always there and you didn't notice for a long time? I love talking about this kind of stuff.

    Beaten the Covetus! (1st try)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:55 AM PDT

Is it just me, or the way to the bosses is way harder the bosses themselves? Without the grab attack, my dual longswords would've absolutely destroyed the boss. The only thing that made it harder was the equipment eating. Whipped out my dagger, still done decent dmg. No deaths, in boss, 2 before I got there (once the big hexer hit me close up while on half hp, then 2 hammer whatever those ugly bastards are, ganked me)

Guide: How to get the hardest items to reach in the game

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 11:16 AM PDT

This is a legitimate guide and is in no way me being salty in an extended format, honest.

    Equipment:

    • Yorgh's Ring because you're gonna tank a lot of lightning orbs in the face.
    • Ring of Binding because you're not perfect and you're going to die a lot.
    • A bow with something like a thousand poison arrows. Yeah, 60,000 souls worth.
    • A strong will to live
    1. Start at the Iron Passage bonfire.
    2. Put your summon sign down because boy you're gonna need some light relief during this.
    3. Go pull the lever in the next room.
    4. Retreat back to the previous room because the gank squad are stupid and will start walking back to their cells. Kill the gank squad.
    5. Pick up the treasures
    6. (Optional section )Well, you've nothing better to do and you haven't been summoned yet, so drop down to the left.
    7. Kill the sorceror with poison arrows.
    8. Kill the armour
    9. Drop down again, making sure to kill the guy straight below you. You can kill him with regular arrows if you want.
    10. Leeroy and murder the guy on your right, jump back
    11. Leeroy and kill the guy straight in front of the possessed armour. You can't kill the possessed armour yet. You will want to. Run back.
    12. Shoot the astrologer with poison arrows.
    13. Run past the possessed armour. Roll a lot and carry a shield because that greatbow hurts.
    14. I hope you were ready for the the guy round the corner.
    15. Look ahead: another blind drop? You've got to be kidding me.
    16. Go down, find another astrologer, more poison arrows.
    17. Oh great, a headless giant. Aged Feather time.
    18. Repeat steps 1 to 16 for a total of 11 more times.
    19. Now everyone in the cell is dead, pull the lever and run through the grate.
    20. Mess it up and aged feather back to the bonfire. Head back to the lever.
    21. Realize you forgot to rest at the bonfire. Aged feather back, rest and repeat step 18 until you pull it off.
    22. Go left to kill any high path guy (stage 7) you've missed.
    23. Walk into the next room to see another lever. Stop, go for a drink, you've earned it.
    24. Kill the sorceror who spawns in an extremely convenient location for backstabbing you if you were dumb enough to actually pull the lever first.
    25. You didn't pull the lever first, did you?
    26. Oops, never mind.
    27. Pull the lever. Run to the left.
    28. Kill the armour.
    29. Drop down, shoot the astrologer (12) with a single arrow and retreat.
    30. No, further back right to the dead end.
    31. Murder him once he's out of range of the possessed armour.
    32. Now kill the possessed armour (13). If you've been following this guide you won't need me to tell you this.
    33. Drop down, kill the astrologer and run back.
    34. Now for the cheese course: shoot the headless giant with poison arrows. Because you miss a lot, it'll take about 25 to fully murder him.
    35. If you're unlucky, the possessed armour will drop down, potentially spoiling your fun.
    36. Aged Feather time!
    37. So you're doing this another 11 times, tell you're loved ones you'll be there in a minute.
    38. Roll through the second grate.
    39. In the unlikely event 12 is still alive, you can kill them now. But watch out if 13 is still alive.
    40. Proceed onward and kill the possessed armour (35)
    41. You can now pick up the hardest items to reach in the game: 3 Old Growth Balm and 3 Cracked Red Eye Orbs
    42. Seriously wonder if you should continue playing this game
    43. Shoot the headless giant (34) out of spite. And also because despawning him makes the boss run easy, which is the only reason you were really here anyway.
    44. Look up what Old Growth Balm is, exactly.
    45. Realize that you're meant to run through the cells with the armours still there. Consider how often you messed it up slightly and how it would be a death sentence.
    46. Still be salty you didn't figure that out before you despawned pretty much the entire level in order to pick up, I kid you not, 3 Old Growth Balm and 3 Cracked Red Eye Orbs.
    47. Wonder exactly what this has done to your Soul Memory. Nothing good, I'll bet.
    48. Wonder what treasure, exactly, would have made this nonsense worth it.
    49. Look up the Ivory Armour and think "could be worse, I guess".
    50. Use the cracked red eye orbs to invade the Iron Passage. Stand near the fog gate and use the old growth balm in the unlikely event anyone actually reaches you as they leeroy the fog gate.

    First impressions: Darks Souls 2

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:35 PM PDT

So I'm in the mood to write a little gaming memoir here. Apologies if I may waffle, but I'm going to enjoy this retrospective. My Dark Souls 2 impression is wrapped up in the last paragraph.

I got into gaming relatively late as an adult. As a child I was a Commodore 64 fan... but my first memories of discovering dark fantasy lore was in an electronic boardgame called dark tower. It captivated me. Took me to a world of fantasy with citadels, bazaars and pegasus's. It was a beautiful fantasy world I've been yearning to somehow escape to... and I discovered this again as an adult thanks to From Software.

I purchased a used PS3 with a load of games, mostly as entertainment for guests in a house I rented out on airbnb. It came with demon souls and dark souls. I don't think I played Demon Souls at all but I got a quarter way through dark souls 1... loved it. It gave me that Dark Tower nostalgia... the mood was spot on. However, I moved to Skyrim due to it being a lot easier to play. I started playing ESO on my laptop for a year while travelling. Loved both Bethesda games... and kinda forgot about the From Software games.

Come lockdown and I got myself a PS4. I buy games on sale on the psn store far more often than I should, but I guess its a good time to be homebound gaming. God of war 4 and Witcher 3 were my first purchases... made progress in GOW, not much in Witcher... great graphics but I'm not feeling the atmosphere or the gaming experience of either. Maybe I'll give em another try at a later stage, maybe I change my mind... but both left me underwhelmed.

Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne were what captivated me... but I had to pull the trigger on Sekiro too. I use youtube videos (thanks Fighting Cowboy) to help me through these games... otherwise I'd surely give up. Finished DS3 and have paused close to the end of the Ringed City to savour for later. The same goes for Bloodborne and the old hunter DLC. Its like savouring a box of chocolates or expensive bottle of wine for a special occasion.

So absorbed I was in the mood and atmosphere of that eerie Dark Souls world, that I had to try Dark Souls 2. Now I always read reviews. For everything. Movies, tech goods. Everything. And the reviews for Dark Souls 2 were mostly pretty bad. The ugly stepdaughter of From Software... and my first impressions I kinda agreed. Played with the lighting on my TV and the screen settings to recapture the dark mood in the other games, that this game seemed to have lost. But it felt awkward. I gave up.

But then I decided to give it a second chance... farmed, grinded and levelled up a bit. I've made it to the Old Dragonslayer at level 50. About to try dispose of him... but most importantly, I now feel that DS2 is a vital part of the Dark Souls experience. Its bright lighting takes you to a new location, away from the lush castles and dungeons... and to a strange coastal land. It just makes the fantasy world that much bigger. Its as if we've seen snowy mountains and weird ringed cities, but as a wandering explorer, we discover the new land of Majula. The size and variety of settings in this world is what immerses you. You trudge from one corner to the other. While you may prefer the atmosphere in the other games, I feel that this journey is an important part of the entire process. In other words, the game has totally grown on me. I love designing my own character and I'm totally absorbed into the gameplay.

Each Dark Souls game is like a different chapter in a book, a different episode in a series or a different stage of your life. Which game you prefer doesn't really matter at all. Its all part of your journey into this story... where you die, revive and carry on grinding against all odds. Its much like life. Maybe your twenties were better than your teens. Maybe you found yourself in your thirties... or maybe it was a depressing time, where the world was in crisis and a pandemic threatened mankind. Dark Souls 2 is a part of my journey and I'm loving it.

How to do 2H attack immediately into 1H attack?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 11:50 AM PDT

How did this guy do that in this PvP video at 5:07? It looks really useful. In his inventory, it looks like it's being one-handed when he definitely does the first swing with both hands.

    Is aldia SOTFS only?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 02:11 PM PDT

I've been looking through the guides and all I'm seeing is saying aldia is in normal ds2 with the 1.10 patch, I'm on that version and only have the normal ds2 (cant afford dlc or sotfs) but I've never seen aldia at any of the primordial bonfires and he wasnt in black gulch and I was wondering if I need dlc for him or not? All the sites I see are implying that he doesnt need one.

What is your favourite weapon attack animation?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 07:35 AM PDT

For me it's the powerstanced Fire and Magic Smelter Swords. It's like a rainbow of Strength and Destruction but the downside is that the weapons break pretty fast if you spam it.

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 03:47 AM PDT

I only got a goddamn dagger and a pea-sized shield, and rolling isn't as effective as ds1 and ds3. 1 estus and unseen path to heide is kicking my ass with those dual wielders. how the fuck do I handle the leveling system in this? lol

EDIT: My character drinks like a wimp lmao

    Moon Butterflies

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 08:42 AM PDT

I love finding the Butterflies just chilling out in the world

I found some in the Shaded woods/ruins, in the Servant Quarters and just found a new one in the Undead crypt on the way from Vendrick up on the ceiling.

I know there's a bunch more, makes me think there's a hidden butterfly in each area

Which area did you find the most annoying? And if you want to share which area you found the most difficult too, feel free :D

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 03:35 AM PDT

I am currently going through my first playthrough, I've been told by my viewers that I'm almost done with the base game, about to fight Vendrick. Still need to play the DLCS.

So far for me I'd say the most annoying place was the Black Gulch, the poison made me go insane haha. Gotta take your time with it, but the more I kept the dying, the more I kept rushing. When I finally got to the petrified statue with the bonfire, by rushing to it I unpetrified it and got trapped between the enemies chasing me and the statue. Oh boy.. that area really tested me haha.

Most difficult? Perhaps Shaded Woods? Traversing through it was really difficult, not being able to lock on to the enemies there is what made it challenging for me, kept missing and getting rekt. Even missed an enemy once and ran by him, Got to Tark, realised I need to equip the ring to talk to Tark. While I was equipping the ring I heard footsteps behind me but it was too late! I got backstabbed and died to the stealthiest kill ever haha.. When I came back I was paranoid as hell cause I was hearing footsteps again but that was just Tark digging his legs into the sand.. which I took a while to realise..

GOOD TIMES. Still trynna git gud :P

When 100%'ing dark souls 2 do you switch builds often?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:26 PM PDT

So i'm 100%'ing the game right now and I'm wondering if other people have switched builds to use the spells and equipment they've acquired throughout their run. Personally what I have done is started out with a sorcery str build, then go for hexes and str, then switched back to sorcery because I realised I didn't really like hexes, and now deciding between going pure str or miracles and dex, honestly i'm so lost and overwhelmed and would like to hear what others have done.

    Finally Beat the Fume Knight

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:11 PM PDT

So I'm new to the souls series. I got into it after the DS1 remaster came out and loved it played the whole game through. So I'm now playing scholar of the first sin and I love it but fuuuuuuck when I got to the Fume Knight I wanted to give up he's hands down the hardest boss I've ever faced but i wanted so badly to beat all the bosses. I just beat him. Just now. After 60 attempts. I might be a casual for saying this Idk but I've never been so relieved and proud in a video game. Now I can finally move on and beat the rest of the game. (p.s. the blue smelter demon is annoying too.)
