    Souls style name generator

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:17 AM PDT

    Hi Guys, how are doing?

I've always liked the names of bosses and locations in the Souls series, I think they're very badass...
Inspired by this, I decided to create a Souls style name generator, I found the result very nice and decided to make it available online!
I've posted on other dark souls reddit some days ago, and almost everyone liked the result, so i decided to share here too =)
By the way, i've also added a char limiter, so anyone can use the names in the game...

If someone is interested, feel free to test.

    https://www.paulokramer.com/hotsites/DarkSoulsNameGenerator

If it is against the rules to post this type of link here, let me know, and i'll remove or some moderator can remove it too!

Any problems you encounter can make me aware.

Thank you in advance for your attention, have a great week!

I love seeing architectural references in this game

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:09 PM PDT

As I was playing through today, I fought the Belfry Gargoyles. Ok, so what. Lame boss. But, for the first time after them, I noticed the path to where Vorgal the Sinner invades.

And I realized that that little area is both a gameplay and architectural callback to everyone's favorite boss: THE CAPRA DEMON!

The stairs are mirrored from the OG, but with a narrow room, the stairs on the side, and a small path over a dead-end archway, as well as stunlocking dogs with another enemy mixed in, the reference seems clear. One of the few times I actually went "oh shit" to something so small in this game. Love it so much.

Day 9 of my first playthrough of this game: Undead Crypt, Throne of Want, Aldia's Keep, Dragon Aerie, Dragon Shrine, plus one of my favourite moments in the entire series.

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:36 AM PDT

Not as much to discuss as the previous two days, but, if we're going by quality of content seen daily, today was quite an improvement. Without further delay, here's my opinion on everything I played through:

    1. The Undead Crypt. I've already said what I wanted to in my last post, and only have this to add: the run up to the boss is (as seems to be frequent in this game) packed with way too many enemies. I have no idea how I managed to run past and not take any damage, despite the fact that the character takes absolutely ages to enter the fog.

    2. Velstadt. Another dude in armour, but he'll sometimes fire hexes (that's what those things are, right?). Nothing extraordinary; slightly disappointing, even, given the lore. First attempt, but had run out of flasks by the time I'd won, so it was no walk in the park.

    3. What followed after Velstadt is honestly one of the most memorable moments in the series for me: the reveal of Vendrick's ultimate fate.

Throughout the game, you've been told to seek the King. You've been told how he battled (and was victorious over) the Giants. You're also aware of his efforts to get rid of the Undead Curse. If ever there was a figure of ultimate power in this game, it's Vendrick, Ruler of Drangleic.

And yet, when you finally reach him, after killing all four Lords in the four corners of the world and taking their souls, after proving yourself worthy by surviving the King's Passage, slaying the Looking Glass Knight, going through the Shrine of Amana, killing the Demon of Song, traversing (although "stumbling through" would be more apt) the Undead Crypt and finishing off Velstadt, his most loyal knight, you're greeted with this.... this husk. Not even a shell of the man he once was. It's an extremely sombre moment, and, although I might criticise this game a lot, I have to applaud what the developers did here. It also makes me think whether the ending of DS1 might have been more impactful if Gwyn, instead of being a mandatory boss, would have, say, similarly mindlessly wandered around (like the husk he is, lore-wise), only retaliating if you initiate the fight.

    1. Aldia's Keep. I loved the beginning of this area with the massive skeleton (a bit more on this later), but soon started hating it after being ganked by 4 Ogres. I swear by Gwyn, the hitbox on their grab is broken, something they share with Mimics in this game, whom, incidentally, I also despise.

    2. Sort of a continuation of 4, really. I saw 4 sconces that had the message "Don't you dare!" written near them. Being an intellectual of the highest order, I, of course, went and lit all 4 of them. Each time, I got invaded by a Forlorn. The fourth one, especially, I found to be a right pain, so, seeing the fog gate after clearing out the area made me use a Homeward Bone, so that I could rest and refuel. I come back to the Hall, admiring the gargantuan Dragon Skeleton as per usual, when it CAME BACK TO LIFE. Shocked, I ran to the side immediately, and tried to escape by the stairs. Turning back, though, I saw that it had killed itself by slamming its head into the wall. Bit anticlimactic, but oh well. Aldia Key for me.

    3. The Guardian Dragon. Meh. First attempt, completely ordinary. Next.

    4. Dragon Aerie is visually one of the best areas in the series. The numerous dragons flying around make for a great view. Unfortunately, it's a bit short, and the exploding enemies are rather annoying. Plus, the explosion reduces equipment durability rather than actually causing damage to you, which is something I found out the hard way.

    5. Dragon Shrine is more of the same, really; visually quite good, but annoying enemies. I especially hate the fact that one hit from those humongous dudes in armour (seeing a pattern here) staggers me for what feels like an hour. Adding to the list of "things I found out the hard way", the Dragon Knights (those things in yellow armour that bow when they see you) will start chasing and attacking you if you try and run past the slower, but bigger knights. Never making that mistake again.

    6. From the Ancient Dragon in the Dragon Shrine, I obtained the Ashen Mist Heart. I also found a Petrified Egg somewhere, but I have no idea what it's for. Using the Ashen Mist Heart, I was able to enter the memories of: Orro, Vammar, Jeigh (forgive me if I got the names wrong), Vendrick and the Dragon near the Duke's Dear Freja. I don't really have much to say about any of them, except that it was cool to see the fort in the Forest before it all went to ruin.

    7. The Giant Lord fights almost exactly like the Last Giant, probably because (I think) they're the same Giant. First attempt, although I did die to the fireballs twice before the actual fight began.

    8. One thing I should have mentioned earlier is that, as soon as I got the King's Ring, I went to Drangleic Castle and accessed the Throne of Want. There, I fought the Throne Watcher and Throne Defender. This is probably the fight I've died to the most till now (7 deaths). I'll be honest, I don't like this fight. At all. They just seem like two random people thrown in to inflate the boss count. Or maybe this was some sort of half-hearted attempt at making O&S 2.0, in which case they failed miserably. Here, I have nothing to break aggro, because the "arena" is just flat terrain, with no pillars, or just... anything, really; also, the AIs seem to work completely individually, rather than working as a team, so God help you if they both attack in such a way that dodging one lands you right in front of the other. Also also, when one dies, the other just heals them to FULL HEALTH. On my best attempt (not counting the actual victory), I had Defender heal Watcher, then Watcher heal Defender, then a long fight ending with me anticlimactically falling off the arena, because the developers decided that it'd be fun to have the arena just break off.

    9. Looking at my last post, I realise I completely omitted to mention the Prowling Magus & Congregation. That's only natural, though, I think you'd agree.

    10. Aldia's a really cool NPC. I wish he was in Dark Souls 3. One slightly confusing thing, though, is that there's also a land called Aldia, referenced in the item description of a ring, the name of which I can't recall at the moment.

Anyway, that's all for this post. Have a good day.

Exploring Drangleic - Part 4: Huntsman's Copse, Undead Purgatory, and Harvest Valley

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:23 PM PDT

Got a useful reminder from u/braungetthesehands that there was a war between Izalith and Anor Londo after she turned into the Bed of Chaos and the demons were born. That would explain what Straid meant by the witch who created pyromancy having fought the Old Ones.

Heading back down the way to Heide, we see that Licia is there now, and she tells us that this rotunda is meant to open up multiple paths. Fortunately for us, it "only runs on miracles" and Licia just so happens to be a cleric.

2000 souls later, we're walking down a seemingly natural tunnel, or at least one that's not built up like the path leading to Heide. Sitting in a fancy chair off to the side is an antisocial hexer who didn't want to talk to me, so it's time for another trip to Fextralife.

Felkin the Outcast is a very angsty boy who is seemingly obsessed with the Dark and only talks to you if you have a big enough brain and high enough faith stat. He claims that he came here because this land is close to the Dark. The kingdom collapsed a long while back and almost everyone has turned into a Hollow, save a few weirdos such as himself. He says that sorcery and pyromancy never quite clicked with him, but his discovery of the Dark allowed him to find his calling.

Well, I'm doing pyromancy this time around, so not much else to say about him.

    Huntsman's Copse

The first bonfire in the area is called Undead Refuge, which implies that the undead in this area were under threat from something. From this spot, we're able to see a large circular building in the distance across a ravine. We continue moving and encounter a number of undead wearing rags and some... poison spewing butterflies? Kinda weird but okay. Keep going and we come out to a building full of undead bandits. Clear through them and we reach the next bonfire.

Heading out into the forest, we encounter some more Hollows and these big guys with sickles in BDSM gear. Walk around a little, get poisoned by some butterflies, and then suddenly get invaded by this guy just called "Forlorn."

You'll likely recognize this mysterious fellow as the guy on the box art for SOTFS. There are a number of them who invade in various locations throughout Drangleic, and each time you kill one, Straid sells one more piece of their equipment set. This time around, we get the hood.

Born of Aldia's obsession with the First Sin, the Forlorn lost both their corporeal form and a world to call their own. Now they drift into other worlds, ever in search of a home. But without self, one has neither beginning nor end, and so the Forlorn have only to wander.

This is the second mention we've gotten of Aldia, the first being in the Southern Ritual Band, and it seems that these guys are also a result of the experiments there. However, this is the first mention we get of "The First Sin", and apparently its nature led to experiments that caused people to lose their form and become the Forlorn.

The next bonfire is locked away, so we head into a cave with some cursed pottery and spooky scary skeletons. Unfortunately for us, the skeletons keep reforming, so we have to go in deeper and kick some necromancer's ass. I don't think the mage is actually reviving the skeletons, since they're already undead and immortal, but is just instead putting them back together so they can keep fighting us.

Went outside, scoured around a little, and found the Undead Lockaway Key. Its description tells us that these forests were used by the Old Iron King, who we are hearing about for the first time, to do undead hunts. However, both the captors and the captives are all undead now. So basically the same deal as the Bastille, but instead of just locking them in a prison, the Iron King decided to torment them in a spooky forest. Sounds like a real asshole.

There's also another super fancy knight with some bone dust. So far it seems like there's bone dust in any area that was once a great kingdom, although that is not quite certain yet as we've only found two.

Anyway, we unlock the bonfire and meet Creighton. He's the second person we've met from Mirrah after Lucatiel. He says that he came to this land for its many dangers in order to hone his blade, but now he wants revenge on a person who tried to back-stab him. This person happens to be Pate, who told us back when we met about a brigand who attempted to trap him. Oddly enough, Creighton corroborates his story, but says that he set the trap for Pate because the warrior was trying to betray him. Seems we've got quite the confusing situation on our hands.

There's not much left to cover in this area, so let's just head right on over to the boss: the Skeleton Lords. Starting to notice a little bit of a theme with this area? The three lords each wield different weapons which allows you to figure out the order in which you want to kill them. This is because upon killing each of the lords, different types of skeletons will spawn in the arena depending on which one you kill. This also means that if you kill all the lords first, you'll essentially be stuck dealing with an entire army of skeletons. If you pay attention, you'll notice the skeletons pop up from the spots where the fireballs from the dead lords land. Considering that they all share one health bar, it seems like the Skeleton Lords figured out how to spread out their souls into more than one body at a time to preserve themselves. They're kinda like liches at this point.

Their soul tells us that they were commanded by the Old Iron King to capture the undead, but ended up being overtaken by the curse themselves. Is is expanded upon in their armor set, which describes how they were among the king's best men, but lost their memories upon their "rebirth", becoming Hollows and creating their own kingdom of bone.

    Sounds pretty fucking metal.

    Undead Purgatory

There's another path in Huntsman's Copse that leads to the big building we saw upon entering. As opposed to the thicc kinky guys populating most of the area, this way has some slim edgy guys. All of their weapons have Dark infusions, so Felkin's spiel about this place being strong with the Dark seems pretty on point.

Head across a rickety rope bridge to the building, called the Undead Purgatory. The entrance is guarded by a dark spirit, which we have yet to see already walking around without invading. Fight him if you dare, or just roll past him and enter the fog gate.

The Executioner's Chariot is a fairly unique boss in that there are two ways to beat him. The first is to navigate your way through the arena, taking out enemies while avoiding the chariot, and eventually pulling a level to drop a gate that the chariot will crash into, leading to you fighting the chariot itself. The second is to clear out the enemies and then shoot at the chariot until its at about 20% health. At that point, it misses the jump over the massive hole in the arena and tries holding on for dear life. This gives you an opportunity for some sadistic revenge and "long live the king" that stupid two-headed skeleton horse.

Can you guess which one I did?

Its soul says that the chariot was created to torment the undead and was a reflection of its master's soul. At this point, I should bring up that the name Purgatory is likely not in reference to the Christian neutral afterlife, but to the Buddhist hell Purgatory. With that in mind, its clear that this place was built to be an eternal hellscape for the undead locked within.

Heading up a flight of stairs, we meet Titchy Gren, the NPC for the Brotherhood of Blood who appears to be one of the dolls created by the Princess of Alken. How or why he is here and holding this position is currently unclear to me. However, unlike those raving lunatics, Gren seems to be quite fluent. Quite fluent in talking about what a bloodthirsty maniac he is, of course. The guy seems to have a really unhealthy obsession with spilling blood. He also asks if we would like to serve Nahr Alma, who, unless I missed their name in an item description, is likely the scythe-wielding figure depicted in the statues within the room.

Considering that many of the non-basic Hollow enemies in the area drop Cracked Red-Eye Orbs and the very sadistic nature of their weapons, its likely safe to assume that the Brotherhood of Blood has become the force running this area since the Old Iron King's men fell to the curse.

    Harvest Valley

The next main area after Huntsman's Copse is a barren wasteland filled with poisonous gas and liquids. Upon reaching our first bonfire, a massive tower with many windmills is visible in the distance. We also meet Chloanne.

She's an orestone trader who wanders around the lands looking for valuable stones to collect. She says this place isn't like she was told, which is another example of a visitor to a fallen kingdom in Drangleic not knowing about just how ruined the places around here are. Most interestingly, she doesn't know how she got here, which makes another character we can add to the amnesiac list.

Heading into the valley, we quickly find some big hexers that are being used as mounts by normal sized guys and more Hollow prisoners. Gavlan is also hanging out in a tunnel, so that's nice.

There are some sexy pyromancer ladies acting as living artillery backed up by more Hollow prisoners guarding a gate. Their set description says that they are sorceresses from the desert land of Jugo and that they use their seductive appearance to get what they want.

At this point in the area, its very obvious that this area was used for some kind of mining operation. There are also some watchtower structures scattered around the area. Moving in a little further, we encounter some more of the kinky big guys from Huntsman's Copse. Considering that those were presumably the Old Iron King's men in that area, it is safe to assume that if they are here, then Harvest Valley was also part of his territory.

Hmmmm. Iron King's men, prisoners, watch towers, mining operation...

Oh cool, this is a slave mining operation. Seems like the Old Iron King was a super huge asshole. I'd never considered the economic benefits of having an unkillable work force in a poisonous environment.

Searching around a bit, we find some items that I didn't know existed! The Old Knight Pike and Greatshield. In case you haven't noticed yet, all of the Old Knight gear we've been finding is all stuff that we have never seen the actual Old Knights using. I wonder why that is. Also, what was an Old Knight doing all the way out here?

There's little more of significance around here other than a blacksmith looking Hollow with a big hammer and a headless guy who flips around a lot. However, along a path to the left of the tower, we find a familiar destroyed statue in a cave. The Altar of Sunlight, allowing people to join the Warriors of Sunlight. According to their covenant ring, sun worship is a lost belief that many warriors used to take place in.

We're already pretty sure the people of Heide came from Anor Londo and we know that the Sunlight covenant came from Lordran. Having found the remains of an Old Knight and the Sunlight Altar here, a little theory started to develop in my head: perhaps Heide was once a much larger nation than the single city we found sunken into the sea. Perhaps it was once like Drangleic and Olaphis, and used to be the major power on the continent. And perhaps Harvest Valley was once a part of their lands.

Next time, we'll be making our way into the tower and the areas beyond. Let me know what you thought of my observations and theories and share any of your own theories or anything you think I may have missed. Until next time.

Why do you recommend it because many players think it is worst game of series? What is major diffrences between Ds2 and Ds3? Is build variety is good enough? And for last question; can I make a viable miracle build? :)

Dark souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin is on sale right now in the Xbox Marketplace! It is 75% off its normal price so that puts it at $9.99

I just wanted to do a little PSA because the last several big sales they had on Xbox that included Souls games, DS2 has been excluded, but it is finally here again! Sale lasts for 5 more days. I am not in any way trying to promote the sale of the game. For those who don't own Xbones, it can be a bit of a pain finding the game you want to buy and getting to the sales which they hide behind several screens - I know if I didn't see the sale I would want someone to tell me, so I decided to post.

I am v excited to get back to what I love - kicking the Pursuer's ass with firebombs and roll attacks. Cheers!

Company of Champions?! More like Company of Jerks!

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:04 PM PDT

Having previously played Dark Souls, Bloodborne & Dark Souls 3, I was excited to grab into DS2:SOTFS when it was on sale on PSN.

What I've experienced since first venturing out from Majula has been asskicking, upon asskicking, upon ass kicking.

This game was insanely hard compared to even Bloodborne's steep learning curve. I know all about putting the time in to 'git gud' but it felt like even the most basic enemy was so much harder than they should be.

Not to mention the only summon I'd seen all game was some guy in No-Man's Warf who thoroughly kicked my dumb ass some more.

Today, I'm just cruising through a thread about someone playing DS2 for the first time and saw a comment saying the Company of Champions covenant is basically like putting the game on hard mode.

Well... this explains so much. Hours of confusion, grinding and wondering if I'm actually exploring areas I'm not ready for suddenly make sense.

When I'm finished work I'm ditching that Company of Snake Oil Salesmen continuing my adventure.

Also, the Flexile Sentry was super easy, even in the Company, so I can't imagine how much he sucks out of it. Stupid double body jerk.

    TL/DR: I am a huge dumbass.

I'm currently playing the third DLC. Started as an Hexer and currently playing as some kind of melee hexer, barely cast anymore. To be fair, Dark infused Crypt Blacksword is very strong with 40/40 int/faith but I'm terribly slow.

I'm spending my last levels on endurace because after two hints I need to waste very precious seconds to regain endurace, sometimes dying in the process because I can't block or roll. While playing with no sword is fund and rewarding, playing this slow can be very frustrating.

The worst part is how the sword, even if it looks like a MASSIVE stronk piece of metal... is very short. The hitbox is very very very strange, sometimes jumping to hit the air while the enemy is milimeters before the sword.

I'm currently thinking into coming back to one hand + staff but I have no idea which nice dark infused weapons are around.

Another idea would be respec the whole character and try a new thing but I have no idea what I could do. Looking around found a Paladin build made by /u/abyssal_paladin from one year ago, he said:

Basic setup: 50 for VIGOR, STRENGTH, FAITH, with enough vitality to not fat roll in the armor and weapon setup listed below, 20+ endurance.

Weapons: Drakekeeper Great Hammer with lightning infusion +10, Defender's Shield +5, Lightning Dragon Chime +5.

Armor: Royal Soldier helm, Watcher's armor + gauntlets, Velstadt's Leggings.

Spells: Sunlight Blade, Great Heal, Magic Barrier.

Which looks interesting with a great hammer makes me believe I'm going to be hitting like a barbarian.

    Any interesting/powerful builds lying around?

    Thanks

And it is much sadder seeing it than reading about it.
