An Open Letter to the Invader Who Was Anything But...

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 01:13 AM PDT

I had recently beaten Dark Souls 1 Remastered while playing with a family member and it was a joy. Bosses were still hard because my teammate wasn't just using endgame gear and carrying me. They were making me pull my weight and playing through with me.

Well, that all changed when I started playing DS2. Let me tell you: I was not ready for the substantial change in gameplay mechanics and various UI issues that I have been having. This isn't the case for everyone but this game truly tries my patience. I'm not good at these games. They are truly difficult to me and I have a hard time learning patterns and split-second decision making. But progress is progress no matter how little. (I don't even wanna talk about how long it took me to get through the tower area where the Last Giant, Pursuer, and Armorer Dennis reside...)

Then it got worse when I realized that I had spent so long learning the basics and essentially practicing on weaker enemies, that Soul Memory put me at a significant window of difference between myself and my main partner in crime. Truly, I was devastated as I had no idea this was a concept in the game. No more co-op until either they catch up or I get to Dark Souls 3... breaks my heart, fam.

Now I'm no quitter, but I was truly bummed by this discovery. It sucked. And to top it off, I was getting invaded in Heide's Tower. The invader came around the corner, I got a lucky backstab, and it did minimal damage. But I got the backstab because the person had cast an AOE heal orb. Very confused, I stopped my feverish onslaught of pencil pokes and watched them. They went up into the first space of enemies and of course, my only choice was to follow. I didn't think my fate would be prosperous but tickle me surprised. The invader stood back while I killed all the Heide Knights and Armored Giant Swordsmen. At the completion of each room, the invader gestured and then moved on to the next room.

I was confused, but with my small circular shield and hand axe +4, I kept on. Once the circular room with 4 enemies was cleared, it happened. I turned to face the invader thinking they wanted a proper arena for PvP and they had dropped two items. Previously, from the first enemies, they had given me 20 human effigies. And I thought, jeez that was generous. But this time was different. This time it was a Fire Rapier+10 and a Magic Ultra Greatsword+5. It had another name to it but I can't remember what it was.

I had played through the first game and meticulously planned my upgrades because I knew they were limited. This player just gave them to me seemingly for nothing. I was so stunned and exclamatory to my SO that I didn't think to screenshot or video save the interaction and it kills me. This person deserved a friend request so I could somehow express my thanks. And now its too late to find them.

I have been STRUGGLING with this game more than I probably have with any other game and an assumption that I was about to get wrecked by yet another pro invader was turned into one of the most surprising plot twists in multiplayer history for me.

So to the player who gifted me weapons just for the giggles, I applaud you. That fire rapier has already been changing my life. The Ultra Greatsword will still need more points in STR before I can use it, but I am forever grateful. And if you read this and you are that player, please message me.

I truly feel like a kid at Christmas morning. Thank you so much. You didn't have to do that and it will likely make my upcoming adventures a lot more fun in the moment.

TL;DR amazing player-invader gave me some incredible loot and I am stunned, but grateful.

    Boss Death Count

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 08:54 AM PDT

I've just run through all the Souls/Bloodborne/Sekiro stuff and finished with Dark Souls 2, so thought it'd be fun to count how many times each boss killed me.

I've played DS2 quite a few times before, both original and SoTFS, however there were several bosses I'd never killed or even fought before (because the run-ups suuuuuuck). These are Anceint Dragon, Lud and Zallen, Sir Alonne, Darklurker and the Gank Trio (Ok I tried these guys a few times years ago and said fuuuck that). For the most part the bosses in this game are easy compared to Sekiro/DS3, but there are some challenges here and there.

I did a strength build (I like wielding blocks of earth rather than pointy things) and started with the Club, moved on to the Greatsword, picked up the Crypt Blacksword (bonfire ascetic on Rotten required for this) and finally picked up the Fume Ultra Greatsword for the DLCs and optional bosses. I two-handed my weapon and never used a shield for the whole thing.

Here's my death rundown in order that I fought the bosses, with a bit of commentary:

    The Last Giant - 0

The Pursuer - 0 (technically 1 as his first appearance killed me - he's exponentially harder when you have 5 ADP)

    Old Dragonslayer - 0

    Dragonrider - 0

    Flexile Sentry - 0

Ruin Sentinels - 2 (Felt like a bad hitbox got me here)

    Lost Sinner - 0

    Belfry Gargoyles - 0

Scorpioness Najka - 3 (Taking this path early meant I wasn't expecting the damage output here, died when I thought I had enough health to tank a hit)

Royal Rat Authority - 8 (Least favourite boss in the series, all 8 deaths from not killing the rats quickly enough. Not easy with a slow af Greatsword)

Prowling Magus and Congregation - 1 (Oops. The Spells did way more damage than I prepared for)

The Duke's Dear Freja - 2 (Again taking this path early meant I took loads of damage)

    Royal Rat Vanguard - 0

The Rotten - 0, didn't actually get hit (and 0 again with a bonfire ascetic)

    Executioner's Chariot - 0

Skeleton Lords - 0 (Did the SoTFS reduce the number of bonewheels? They weren't hard to start with)

    Covetous Demon - 0

Mytha, the Baneful Queen - 0

Smelter Demon - 0 (thank god, cba with killing the knights over and over)

Old Iron King - 1 (Got knocked out of the arena, classic)

    Twin Dragonriders - 0

    Looking Glass Knight - 0

    Demon of Song - 0

Velstadt, the Royal Aegis - 2 (Bastard caught me healing, forgot how hard he hits)

Throne Watcher and Defender - 0 (Wasn't aware you could fight them early)

    Guardian Dragon - 0

    Giant Lord - 0

    Vendrick - 0

Blue Smelter Demon - 5 (Some of the worst hitboxes in the game I swear)

Fume Knight - 8 (Was the hardest in the game when I fought him years ago, doesn't feel too bad now but took some dying to learn the best responses to his moves)

Sir Alonne - 1 (Easier than I expected tbh)

Aava the Kings Pet - 3 (This was infuriating, loads of my hits just didn't register at all. Her paw slam attack has a really weird hitbox that's totally counter intuitive too, shame because it's a cool fight otherwise)

Burnt Ivory King - 1 (Tried it solo and got his health to half, but got overwhelmed by knights. Got the Loyce Knights for help and it was super easy)

Lud and Zallen - 2 (Absolutely maddening to find my weapon breaking 80% of the way through this, it didn't feel like I'd been abusing the weapon so it's frustrating to not make it through the fight. Also the worst area in the game by some margin but everyone knows that)

Elana, the Squalid Queen - 1 (summoned Velstadt, hey ho)

Sinh, the Slumbering Dragon - 1

Gank Squad - 1 (take that, bunch of cunts)

Darklurker - 4 (Great fight, makes me wonder why most of the bosses aren't this well developed)

Ancient Dragon - 0 (Way easier than I expected, but I did have high Vigour to tank the flames)

    Nashandra - 0

Aldia - 1 (Got greedy and burnt to death)

So there we have it. Royal Rat Authority and Fume Knight are confirmed to be my biggest problems in this game, killing me 8 times each. And Prowling Magus is confirmed to be a bigger challenge than the Ancient Dragon haha.

I would say the Darklurker is my favourite boss, but the Chasm run up would put me off fighting him in future playthroughs, which is a shame.

    Decimals in shield defence

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 09:00 AM PDT

Do the decimals affect the damage taken or only whole numbers do? Does a 95.6% shield block 95%, 95.6% or maybe even 96%?

The Dark Souls 2 announcement trailer is really underrated

    Posted: 16 Jul 2020 10:22 PM PDT

    Announcement trailer

I should admit that while I have played multiple soulsborne games, I have never played Dark Souls 2. I know that DS2 generally gets viewed as the black sheep of the bunch but I remember when the first trailer was shown in announcing the sequel and it just always has a special place for me.

I love it's depiction of the world and I think the entire sequence that starts from 0:44 to the end when the vocals start just perfectly captures the entire essence of these games. The slow grinding fight against the masked warriors where the hero gets hurt multiple times but pulls through. The feeling of despair in the music and the world. And it all ends with the dragon probably annihilating the hero at the end.

I just think it really captures the general struggle the player goes through where you take hits and give them back. I view it within the context of the whole series rather than just DS2.

I don't see a lot of conversation about this trailer which is why I felt like making this post.

Those of you that say the idea of Dark Souls 2 being gankier than the other Soulsborne games is a myth, are you out of your minds?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 12:09 PM PDT

I'm at Brume Tower and I've torn off both my lips and my ears and I'm on the edge of pulling out my teeth and using them as bullets to shoot myself with. What is up with this game man, Bloodborne was piss easy compared to this.

    Just started Dark Souls 2

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 11:03 AM PDT

So I bought DS2: SOTFS about 3 days ago and have about 28 hours in. I just managed to kill the Lost Sinner. Unfortunately, I have made my DS2 experience substantially harder than what it should have been. When I first got to Majula, I joined the Company of a Champions covenant. Little did I know, it makes every enemy deal more damage, have more hp, and have around 20% damage resistance. I just realized today what I've done and now it makes sense why everything has been so hard. I am a dumbass :)

    Edit: The only reason I didn't think too much of the difficulty is that I've completed both DS1 and DS3 multiple times. Since this is my first play-through of DS2, I just assumed it was the hardest game of the trio ;-;

First playthrough of DS2 (SOTFS edition to boot)... And of all bosses, Old Iron King is kicking my ass

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 08:17 AM PDT

I've never played a dark souls game in my life, though I've followed the lore of all the soulsborne games extensively, so I decided to start with my favorite which was Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the First Sin.

At first I just allotted my souls into Vitality, Endurance, Strength and, later, Dexterity up until about level 25 and a hundred thousand deaths later when I learned how to play. So I guess I'm going on a bastardised strength run.

As of right now I'm level 90. I was using the Drangleic Sword upgraded to +6 ever since I first found it until I just bought the Claymore, upgraded it to +7 along with wearing the Brigand Armor +1 for fast rolls (speed over endurance, a lesson I learned from the Ruin Sentinels).

Now to my current predicament: The run up to the Iron King is almost mastered but it's so drawn out that I'm fatigued (and down to four sips from the Estus) by the time I get to the Dragon Go- I mean Old Iron King. During the fight, when I lock on to him it screws me up because I inevitably roll into a lava pit (with the usual reaction of "Oh. Really now." As my wife can attest), and when I'm not turning myself into lava soup then I get obliterated by his two handed pyromancy attack. I've tried facing him with other armor like the Alonne Captain set coupled with lightning infused Craftsman's Hammer... But then I find out rolling fast enough is valuable skill.

Believe me, I'm painfully aware the Old Iron King is supposed to be vastly disappointing for many players... The irony is not lost

EDIT: Thank you, friends, for telling me about the bonfire close to his boss fight.

EDIT 2: I finally got the fucker. It's much easier when you don't use all your Estus on the gauntlet every time you die.

P.S. two handed Craftsman's Hammer is God

Just how hard is a Covenant of Champions play through in SotFS?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 10:05 AM PDT

    I almost quit...

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 01:42 PM PDT

I started the game 2 days ago, so far nothing too surprising, The Pursuer was quite challenging but come on, if I could beat Knight Artorias this guy doesn't gonna intimidated me so finally beat him, took me 2 tries, after that went to Heide's Tower, died to the old knights like 3 times, went to the Blue Cathedral and was nice to see Orstein again, beat the Hunter (he felt off the platform), next to the No-man's Wharf, I have to admit that the Flexile Sentry was kinda surprising but Lucatiel was with me so that made my life easier also big shout to the pole in the middle of the room, that pole saves lives. Long story short, made my way into Belfry Luna so I went up and find a fog gate block by another door, I saw a conjuration sign in the floor so I guessed that a boss was behind the fog, went up by the ladder next to the door, and got a clear view of the roof and saw all those gargoyles statues so I knew that was coming my experience reaching the upper bell in the first game prepare me for this I thought, well... What a fool...

I think I died more that 10 times idk, the dark littles guys weren't spawning anymore. I consumed all the boss souls I had just to level up and increase my damage output but didn't work, I didn't kill them fast enough, I was about to quit, leaving this for later but I said "come on, one more time, you can beat them" (in my last try before this one I could kill two of them)... at the end I did it, I beat them, it only required a lot of patience, running, dodging, 6 eustus, 2 gems and the Heide's Sword but I did it and I'm proud of it.

PS: sorry for bad english, I'm still learning.

A Comprehensive Guide To Obtain Hidden Weapon Offline

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 08:20 AM PDT

Right. This one is gonna suck.

Hidden Weapon is a sorcery that does exactly what it sounds like, it masks the weapon you have equipped. Pretty much only useful for PVP but still kinda cool. In order to obtain thus sorcery we need to achieve rank 2 within the Bellkeepers Covenant. Basically, we're gonna have to defeat the Mad Warrior 30 times.

And who is this Mad Warrior, nobody asked? Some sort of mad lad?

The short answer is no. The long answer is still no, but with a lot more expletives.

The Mad Warrior is an invader who spawns in Belfry Sol, nearly directly above the Belfry Sol Approach bonfire. He appears in a red form, like most invaders. His exact spawn location is directly in front of the tower with a ladder leading up to the rooftops.

His combat style is not too tricky to anticipate and overcome; he mostly uses a 3-move attack if you're close enough to him. He also utilises a leap with a downward attack, easily rolled away from. Curiously, sometimes when he rolls away after being attacked, he will roll directly into a stabbing attack...in the wrong direction. This leaves him open to a woeful stab in the rear.

So the actually tricky thing about this slippery little fish is his low spawn rate. I'm not exactly sure of his spawn rate but I've heard it's in the region of 1 in a million. Truthfully I believe it to be between 5-10%.

There are a couple of tips that can help farm this bugger, though for clarity I will only list confirmed tips which do indeed help.

    Tips:

    1. Purchase and equip the Delicate String, bought from Titchy Gren in Undead Purgatory for 20,000 souls. Titchy Gren only becomes accessible after defeating the Executioners Chariot boss. The Delicate String increases your chance of being invaded, considered necessary for farming our enemy.

    2. Ensuring that you're not a member of the Company Of Champions covenant, defeat specific enemies 13 times to prevent them from spawning. This is done in order to utilise Unveil, a miracle we can purchase from Straid Of Olaphis for 2200 souls.

Straid can be found petrified in the Lost Bastille. Unveil releases an orb which moves through walls to lead the player to the nearest enemy, if any are present.

The enemies we need to defeat 13 times each are as follows:

    • 2 Alonne Knights and 1 Ironclad Soldier (Fat Turtle Hammerman) on the suspended walkway • 3 Alonne Knights and 2 Ironclad Soldiers on the walkway with multiple trapdoor into the lava • 1 Alonne Knight (Archer) below and to the side of the aforementioned walkway.

    • 3 Bellkeepers after climbing the ladder from the Belfry Sol Approach bonfire. • 2 further Bellkeepers after crossing the roof.

As well as this, there are 4 enemies up here that you will only encounter here once; they will not spawn twice. They don't really pose any threat.

Once these enemies have been defeated enough times, we may shift our focus back to the Mad Warrior. Resting at the bonfire, stand and cast Unveil. An orb will either float nearly straight up, or it will curve towards the area where the Mad Warrior spawns. Just keep repeating until the orb moves towards him and make your way there.

This method saved me a good few hours. I recall getting all the achievements on xbox360 and at the time I had no knowledge of the above method. Needless to say I spent 2-3 days trying to kill this fucker.

Do you appreciate DS2 more as a sequel to and part of Dark Souls over all, or as a stand alone game?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 11:15 AM PDT

I love the series and I love Scholar most. But I've always said I think if DS2 had been stand alone it would be way more appreciated. It's just so much more human than the rest of the series, it has such a different feel overall, etc. Honestly it could have even been a spiritual successor a la Demons to Dark Souls. Call souls spirits, bonfires camp fires or something, i think it would have been way better received.
