/r/DarkSouls - Modding Monday. Posted: 07 Jun 2020 11:10 PM PDT Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread! Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play! For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games. Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat: Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned: Dark Souls: Remastered Dark Souls II Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin Dark Souls III Our recommendations for safe modding *This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account. Basic Steps: Make a separate Steam account Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library. Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory. Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation. Set Steam to "off line" mode. Install the mods and perform any necessary setup. Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods! Posted: 07 Jun 2020 05:24 PM PDT I think one of the reasons why DS1 is so special is because among Fromsoft games it strikes this balance the best. Think about it, most of the first half of the game you spend traversing these very oppresing locations that are a bit more "realistic" or grounded in medieval historical settings, you are using weapons that are pretty much replicas of real life and enemies are mostly hollows and knights or some disgusting abomination. Yeah obviously you fight giant monsters and get blasted by a dragon. But then there's this little corner of the game past the Titanite Demon called Darkroot garden and suddenly the enemies that you're facing are no longer desfigured hollows, giant demons or rotten blobs, but enchanted bushes, stone guardiands covered in moss, shining crystal golems, MUSHROOM PEOPLE and a giant graceful butterfly. Your npc there is a talking magical cat. The green palette of the woods under the moonlight with all these creatures lurking around makes that level feel like it was taken out of a children's fairytale book. And that feeling makes a really interesting contrast with the rest of the areas of the first half of the game. Even after aquiring the lordvessel I think this contrast follows through, you go from the bottom of drowned New Londo filled with mountains of wet corpses, fightning your way through dark spirits, disgusting blobs and four dark monarchs in the Abyss to a blue crystal cave in the middle of the forest where you fight this giant crystal dragon with fairy wings. Now with the other games. Demon's Souls for the most part is known for it's sense of heavy atmosphere and brutal unforgiving world, it doesn't really incorporate as many classic fantasy elements I think, but for the tone that the game is going for that works perfectly. Same with Bloodborne, being a horror game it makes sense that the feeling of oppresing dark atmosphere is consistent through the whole game, along with it's overly grotesque enemy desing. Dark souls 3 I think tried to imitate Demon's Souls in a lot of aspects and left a lot of the first game's fairytale or "lighter" aspects behind leaving only the gross/dark side of things which led to a less memorable experience for me. The only moment I can think of that makes that contrast is the reveal shot of Irithyll. Sekiro I think makes aa bit of a better job with that balance, but the fantasy side is still way more subtle. All in all, I still love all of the games, but DS1 had this particular feeling that I think made it special for me, and I wish at least one of the other games would have something like talking to a giant magic handmaid mushroom in a magical forest. Hoping Elden Ring will have at least a little bit of it. TL;DR: I want more mushroom people in your games Miyazaki you motherf- [link] [comments] |
Gotta say, I love still seeing this many players on switch. Posted: 07 Jun 2020 08:33 AM PDT Ds1 remastered on switch. This past week I decided to try to do as many side quests as possible (I've never finished any of the character storylines) and literally ever 10 seconds I'm hearing bells being rung. I love it! Stoll so many people playing, and I'm on the switch! I wouldn't have believed it. I've been invaded by guys that have no right having that gear at the beginning. Like, I hadn't fought the gargoyles yet and got invaded by full crimson set with weapons I'd never seen before. How!? People are crazy on this game. Love that it's still being played so much. Also, who the fuck thought that armors on archers was a good idea what about their mobility? Wait till I get to them they will regret it. Fuckers [link] [comments] |
Dark Souls Remastered On Sale Xbox One $15.99. Is it worth it? Posted: 07 Jun 2020 09:29 AM PDT I have the original dark souls but I didn't get that far into it. Is the remastered worth buying for the price right now? and what's the current state of online play? Edit: Bought it [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jun 2020 04:11 AM PDT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEI6A0juJjg Her very first stream started with Dark Souls on the 1st of March. After creating chicken-wing (her character) she continued to play every Sunday for an average of 9 hours. After many struggles and misunderstandings, she finally beat the game on the 24th of May. Clocking in over 100 hours of game time and about 1,050 deaths, with an estimated 500 being against Ornstein and Smough. Being a Dark Souls Veteran it was simply breathtaking to watch the game slowly break down and rebuild her, evoking the nostalgia of my first playthrough, all while building up a community of dedicated followers, creating personal memes and of course bringing out the trolls. (PC) Cinders is the epitome of the Dark Souls trilogy. Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:11 PM PDT This Mod has made me fall in love with the game all over again. If you haven't yet played it on PC or are toying with the idea, I urge you to get it installed. It flips the narrative and encounters on their head, and opens up late game areas early, for those looking to be challenged. My only criticism is that there's too much choice in build variety... I can't fucking decide what to commit to... [link] [comments] |
Is Global Restart Day For DS1 or DSR Posted: 07 Jun 2020 11:03 PM PDT |
Posted: 07 Jun 2020 12:10 PM PDT Dark Souls one is a MASTERPIECE without a doubt!! My main reasoning behind this is the world design/interconnectivity. It is one of the most intriguing and clever world designs in any game to date imo. As you start in the undead asylum, face the aslyum demon and make your way to firelink shrine, then you battle through undead burg then face the taurus demon then make your way through undead parish and face the gargoyles and ring the first bell of awakening, then you find the elevator shortcut from undead parish to firelink, you feel like you've earned it. There are many other shortcuts like the shorcut near undead burg bonfire to lower undead burg, if you choose the master key you can go from new londo to the back entrance to blightown instead of battling through the depths and facing the horror of the gaping dragon just to go through the shitty front entrance of blightown, the valley of drakes interconnects many places for example dark root basin and new londo. I also love the fact you have to earn fast travel although I feel like it is not needed as there is that many shortcuts traversing the world of dark souls is quite easy. This is why it is one of my fave games of all time. As for dark souls 2 I can't say anything about it as I haven't played it yet, but for dark souls 3 I was disapointed as the interconnectivity was lost, and the central hub felt really disconnected from the rest of the world unlike in the first one , firelink shrine you can travel to the catacombs, new londo, and undead burg, undead parish all from the hub. I also hate the fact you have fast travel straight away in dark souls 3 it takes away that amazing feeling I got from playing through the first one. Although I love dark souls 3 I can say dark souls 1 is superior in its world design and it is a game I will always love and have in my heart. [link] [comments] |
I’m at blighttown for the first time Posted: 07 Jun 2020 06:49 PM PDT Help me find the motivation to continue the game. Holy shit, I HATE poison areas, and the level design is incredibly confusing. [link] [comments] |

Bloodborne OST not on Alexa/Amazon Music? Posted: 08 Jun 2020 12:59 AM PDT I cannot purchase the digital Bloodborne soundtrack or listen to it on Alexa while I can for the Dark Souls games (Fromsoftware) and can for Horizon Zero Dawn) Sony/Playstation so it should be on there. Whoever was in charge of putting it on there must have forgotten to. [link] [comments] |
Any tips for Ornstein and Smough on switch? Posted: 08 Jun 2020 03:55 AM PDT I haven't really fought them before but they have a bad rep. I know that smough is weak to lightning and Ornstein is weak to fire but the thing is the only fire weapon I have is a zweihander which would probably be too slow for him right? (I wanna get Ornsteins armour). Also my armour is a mix of the eastern set and the elite knight set so I can get good physical defense while keeping a mid roll [link] [comments] |
What if kindling instead increased Estus potency instead of number of uses? Posted: 08 Jun 2020 03:53 AM PDT Like, instead of using Fire Keeper Souls to increase Estus potency, that goes to kindling, and the number of Estus Flasks are determined by the Estus Shards you've collected? (The Rite of Kindling would simply further increase Estus potency, more than normally kindling) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 07 Jun 2020 10:47 PM PDT I have beat the ash lake hydra in several playthroughs, and every time I found the hydra on the left side of the lake ( viewed from the exit down the great hollow). But this time, for some reason it migrated to a completely new area of the lake, close to where the two clams are, but on the other side of the lake. I have never seen this before. Anyone aslo met this? And how did it cross the road and get to the other side of the lake? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jun 2020 01:15 PM PDT Went to tomb of the giants before anor londo in ng+ 5. It would seem that walking through the catacombs is not really that fun when a skele can three-hit you. [link] [comments] |
Is anybody hyped about the Global Restart day? Posted: 08 Jun 2020 01:43 AM PDT I somehow can't wait. Lately I've delved back into the Souls games after not playing them in a while. I'm killing time by playing Demon's Souls right now, and can't wait for the 10th to come so I can play some OG Dark Souls :) moreso than last year! I even plugged my PS3 back in, it's been almost a year since the last time I did. See you guys in Lordran :D [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jun 2020 06:46 PM PDT I've played Dark Souls for countless hours. I'm blown away that I always seem to notice something new or some little detail I've never noticed before. Today I was killing the gold crystal enemy which houses Dusk. To my surprise, she was actually visible at the top of the enemy head, trapped away in her gold prison before you kill it and release her. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jun 2020 12:29 AM PDT I beat DS a couple months ago. Tbh not a huge fan of the series, I think Bloodborne and Sekiro are better. But DS was a fun challenge and it felt good to get through the game. What do y'all recommend I go to next. I've heard DS2 has some bullshit mechanics to make the game harder, but I don't know for sure. Only heard good things about DS3. Is there a reason to play DS2 if you aren't a hardcore fan? Don't care much for the DS story or lore and I wouldn't mind missing DS2 if it meant not dealing w the bullshit difficulty amplifiers [link] [comments] |
Just finished my first playthrough of DS1. Some thoughts and hot takes. Posted: 07 Jun 2020 09:29 AM PDT So I pretty much avoided the whole Souls series ever since I learned what it was some six or seven years ago. Mostly because nothing that was said to me about the game by friends ever conveyed anything appealing to me. "It's so hard." "You die a hundred times just trying to beat a single boss". And so on. Well lately due to um CERTAIN EVENTS I had a lot of free time on my hands and got convinced by a friend who's going back through the Souls series to play the first game. I also figured since I had recently played games inspired by Souls like Hollow Knight for example, that I would go into the game with a better mindset. I decided to read nothing about the game and not look up even so much as a walkthrough or basic tutorial before starting. My attitude towards not seeking any online information changed towards the end of my playthrough admittedly, but for the most part I didn't know about really anything, even the DLC which I only found out about later after consulting some reviews and other YouTube videos discussing DS1. First of all it goes without saying that this was a very uniquely rewarding gaming experience for many reasons, but primarily due to how revolutionary the game design is and how surprisingly simple the combat mechanics are. When I say 'simple' I mean in design, but not how easy it is to master. I spent many hours in the beginning not understanding how to lure enemies out one by one or even parry for that matter. Even just being able to parry successfully a few times felt so satisfying somehow despite not being able to consistently master this mechanic. I've been going through a big rough patch mentally and I can completely understand why 'dark souls' can often be found alongside terms like 'depression' in search engines. The core philosophy that the game instills in the player is that even if they've died to a boss 100 times, there is a good reason to pick up a weapon and try it for the 101st time and that the 100 previous efforts weren't wasted. That is something I will forever have in the back of my mind and I can't express enough how much this philosophy (if that's not too much of a grandiose term) has affected me positively as of late. As far as the actual game design and game play goes, I think I have to agree with much of what has been said about the game but I'm curious to know if anyone also agrees with me on what I'm about to say, or disagrees, and why. I think the first ~50% of the game is almost flawless. The interlinking design that introduces you to all the cool and interesting shortcuts made for some of the most satisfying gameplay ever. I distinctly remember getting in the elevator in the Parish, expecting to go to a new area, only to find that I actually got back to Firelink. Same goes for kicking down the ladder at the top of the Burg bonfire room. The bosses are intimidating at first up until this point but fair for the most part, probably with the exception of Capra Demon, and were immensely rewarding to overcome. However I do think the game suffers post Anor Londo/O&S fight. I don't think that's terribly controversial but I do want to explain a bit further. The addition of warpable bonfires was a mistake. I think this is kind of contentious, but for me the introduction of warpable bonfires was where the game really lost its charm. I strongly believe this is largely responsible for the quality drop and in some sense gave the developers a free pass to get sloppy with level design after you receive the Lordvessel. Prior to this point in the game there is no need for warpable bonfires due to clever level design and shortcuts. Some journeys were admittedly a tad tedious because of this, but the shortcuts more than made up for it. Besides that, the lack of warpable bonfires (or any other teleport-y checkpoint system for that matter) added huge tension and weight to the player's decisions regarding the exploration of new areas. I distinctly recall trying to go into the Catacombs somewhat early on, but realising the area was too dangerous for me at that time and thus returning back to the safety of Firelink and the path I had gone on so far. The player is cleverly forced to weigh up the pros and cons of straying too far from Firelink and I truly believe something was lost by adding the warp feature. I'm not totally sure what I would have done instead, but I think it wouldn't have been unreasonable to somehow situate Anor Londo such that you unlocked a clever shortcut back to Firelink or Undead Parish. Now I realise this leaves the problem of how you would navigate to the Four Lords and fight them if you don't have the ability to warp to them, or at least back from them. Again, I think there could have been a stronger utilisation of level design to circumvent this issue. The Archives and Seath could have easily been moved into an area that linked quickly back to Anor Londo, then back to Firelink or the Parish. Which brings me to my second hot take. Seath is the worst boss fight in the whole game and should not have made it to the final game in its current form Why? Because the Seath 'trap' is the most egregious, biggest middle finger to the player that violates at least two well established 'rules' off the top of my head. The first 'rule' being that you are pretty much always in a position to be able to retrieve your souls when you die (obviously you're not always successful but that's beside the point), secondly that bonfires are now warpable. In the first instance, you pretty much have to forgo whatever souls (and humanity) you lose to the Seath Trap. Then, once you end up in the jail section of the archives, you can't even warp from that bonfire back to some other part of the game but instead have to fight your way back through a whole area leading back to archives. This is bullshit. It is unequivocally irredeemable. It's egregious, unnecessary and doesn't add to the game in a meaningful way. The game makes a big point of not being easy but it is more or less always fair. Seath is unfair. Plain and simple I have heard the argument that the Hellkite Dragon already established a similar kind of 'fuck you' to the player and therefore justifies the existence of the Seath Trap. My argument against that would be that while the Hellkite certainly verges on 'middle finger' territory, it doesn't violate core game principles like Seath does. You can get to the middle of the bridge and get down the stairs in time to make the shortcut back to the Burg bonfire and decide whether or not to confront the dragon or keep using the under bridge shortcut. There's a choice and you can theoretically survive either without being sent to a fucking crystal jail that you have to fight your way out of with no hope of retrieving souls or humanity. I've also encountered the argument that you could run in, get your bloodstain and then homeward bone. However even if you do this you'll still end up back in the jail section at the non-warpable bonfire, which you will have to fight your way out of. No other boss has this level of fuckassery and I don't see any good way to justify it. So that all being said, I loved the leadup to Four Kings and the path there wouldn't be issue if warps were removed. Same deal with Nito, although admittedly you have to get through Catacombs right to the bottom of Tomb to get to him. A possible quasi solution could have been adding specific warps only for the Four Lords, I don't know. I'm just riffing. That leaves the last Lord fight, Bed of Chaos. I found it curious that you could see vistas of the Demon Ruins from Tomb of Giants but not actually easily get between them via some connecting area or shortcut. For me at least, Lost Izalith suffered greatly from being too 'horizontal' and I think it would have been genius to loop that area back to Tomb somehow. I think by the time you even get to Gwyn you're tired and fed up, and while that feeling kind of works with the in game lore, I found myself caring less and less about what was actually happening because all I wanted to do was fight Gwyn and finish the game. I ended up at about a 70~ hour playthrough and that was without even touching the DLC. From my own narrow perspective I think the game would benefit from being trimmed down by about 10%. Anor Londo and the O&S fight has such a finality to it that I was actually surprised to learn I had another four bosses + Gwyn to do afterwards. I'm not sure how this could be changed, or even if it should have been changed. I understand many people have either played DS3 or 2 and then come back to this game, and so wouldn't have spent so much time on it, but that's certainly not everyone and it wouldn't have been the majority of people when the first game released. I understand that this game can be speedrun in under two hours and that provided you have experience with some Souls game, pacing won't be an issue. But that being said, I think pacing is inevitably going to be problematic for first time players due to all of these reasons. I don't think it's an accident that a good chunk of people stop playing either as they reach Anor Londo or just before. Pacing is tricky to even establish or define in video games to begin with so take what I say at face value. Anyway I know this is long and whiny and yes I'm not a game developer so don't take my hoity toity opinion too seriously. I just have such a huge amount of respect for the game and haven't too many people in my life to discuss it with so that's why I'm here. I'd love to hear opposing opinions or just any thoughts in general. I don't know. Thanks for reading. [link] [comments] |
Thinking about buying the remaster on PS4... Posted: 07 Jun 2020 11:23 PM PDT It's on sale for $20 so it's a great price. My problem is that I've played the original, a lot. It's been a while since I've played so I don't have it memorized like I used to, but I was wondering if anyone else was in a similar spot to me and still enjoyed it? Is there a pvp scene? How's the performance on a normal PS4? [link] [comments] |
