I Think I Might Start Ignoring The Negative Stuff People Say About My Play Style

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 08:36 PM PDT

I love talking about Dark Souls. That's why this is one of the first subs that I joined since nobody that I physically interact with likes DS.

There was a Facebook group that I used to be in based on DS games but they rejected me because I enjoy the leveling aspect of the game. I don't level cap myself and a lot of people in the group hated that.

Everyone stopped leveling between sl120 - 130 so they were pissed off when they asked me my level and I said 189 and on my way to a goal of 205... and then higher goals to follow. Ultimately I was ridiculed for not being a "Real" Dark Souls fan and eventually kicked out of the group.

The only reason I thought people capped levels is because of pvp and co-op. I had no idea that leveling up for the fun of it was so taboo in the DS community.

But I think I will just ignore the insults and continue to have fun with my game.

Thanks for getting through my vent.

    My DS1 SL1 run in 79 seconds

Praise the sun! I finally did it!

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 02:55 PM PDT

Took me about a year, thanks to uni work, but I finally beat DSR, all bosses included. Manus took me like 80 tries, but that is maybe the most satisfied I've ever been with myself. Gwyn put up more of a fight than I thought, but god it was worth it. Sort of just sat there in silence for 5 min after I was done. On to DS2 and BB now!

A SHORT STORY OF FUCKING UP IN DS1

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 02:17 AM PDT

Brace yourselves for hilarity. So I'm in my first playthrough. Fuck up number 1: I get to the point where Lautrec disposes of a certain lady. I get two fire keeper souls, I have nowhere to give them. I read their description and somehow what I get out of it is that even by using the souls you upgrade the flask. Naturally I use BOTH. What if no estus flask upgrade is visible and I end up with ten brand new humanities? Lets plough through. I get to anor londo and I have figured out (vaguely) that I have to invade and kill Lautrec to get SOMETHING to revive the aforementioned lady. I kill him. I get an ear and a fire keeper soul. What would you think I supposed would be used for the revival? THE FUCKING EAR. I go to the fire keeper in anor londo and i give HER the soul. I go to firelink and surprise surprise the ear doesnt work. Fuck up number 2: I get in tomb of giants. I meet patches. I like patches. He asks me if I'm a cleric. I answer yes. I'm not. I'm thinking fuck the lying hyena I wont tell him the truth. Soooo I killed patches. Goddammit. I labeled the post fan art as I consider my butchery of the story as a form of art.

    Just beat O&S solo...

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 03:57 AM PDT

And it feels good. I'm on my second playthrough, the first time round I just summoned someone who absolutely destroyed them both, I basically just stood there and watched it (which did make me laugh after hours of misery)! But this time I was determined to do it solo and I'm glad I did! Next time I will kill fatty first so I can get ornsteins armour.

Anyway, just thought I'd share the good feeling!

A decade later, this game is just unbelievable

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 09:54 PM PDT

In a previous life, I played DS in college. It was a love/hate relationship, but it was so cool!

And then life happened. Some combination of classes, relationship troubles, and those two fucking fucks in Anor Londo kicked in, and I didn't touch the game ever again.

And now, almost a decade later with tons of new life experiences under my belt, I figured I'd buy DSR. I don't play games anymore and I'll probably get wrecked, but what the hell, y'know?

It's perfect. It is a perfect game, and it's doing wonders for my mental health. Even when something is unbeatable, you keep trying, and along the way, you find a little thing that makes it possible. Hours of frustration and trial and error get you there. And when you lean on the community to help, when all is said and done...no one swings the final blow except for you. You beat that horrible, daunting monster.

The funniest part, though, is how different my refreshed eyes are. Back in 2011, the Capra Demon slaughtered me 10+ times. I beat him today with zero issues. And back in 2011, I beat the Gaping Dragon after one quick death. Today, it took an hour and a half and all the sweat my body could pump into my palms.

To make a short story long, diving back into this game is an unbelievable joy, deaths and all. It's a perfect game.

Captain Fatfuck and Sergeant Stabby can suck my shit, though.

Eight years after my first attempt, I have finally beaten Dark Souls (long personal story)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 03:26 AM PDT

In September 2012, I bought a copy of Dark Souls along with a few other games for the Xbox 360. I was a junior in university at the time and I played a few games on our dorm-wide gaming console. Unlike the other games I bought, Dark Souls stood out with its demanding combat system. I struggled mightily with the timing, and I died without improving or understanding what I was doing wrong. I also had a difficult time coping with the game's lack of objectives and hand-holding, which led me to wonder where I could go without getting burned to a crisp by the dragon. Moreover, I died often as a result of the menu not pausing the game when I needed to swap weapons. This frustration, combined with the classes I was taking and the backlog of games I wanted to play, meant I didn't even get to the Bell Gargoyles before I gave up.

Then in 2018, I gave the game another shot on Xbox One. I improved a bit in the combat where I could parry and backstab (inconsistently), but the lack of objectives and pausing continued to hang me up. This led me to New Londo where the ghosts cost me hours worth of souls and humanity. I felt that I lost hours of my time and I couldn't bring myself to resume the wanderer build I was creating at the time.

I always knew DS1 had excellent music and lore that set the standard for future RPGs and action games. However, it was not until Sekiro when I slowly but surely gained the courage to give From games (including DS1) another chance. I grew to embrace the trial-and-error of its combat and I learned to not hesitate from the lack of clear objectives or in battle. I made the right dodges and parries, and learned to not beat myself when I made a mistimed attack that cost me a boss battle. When I finished Sekiro's final boss and got the best ending on its PC port, I decided to face my fears and deal with my nemesis once and for all. I bought the Nintendo Switch version and started the game with one goal in mind: to redeem myself going hollow all those years back.

This time, I started with a Warrior with a focus on endurance and strength. As I finally made actual progress in the game, I started to become comfortable spending an hour or two clearing an area or farming souls in a way I never did when I first tried it on Xbox 360. Thanks to my experience with Sekiro, DS1's parrying and backstabbing mechanics finally clicked with me and I learned to forgive myself when I inevitably lost tens of thousands of souls in places like Sen's Fortress and the Crystal Caverns. I realized the boss battles that once infuriated me were skill checks that ask players to practice their mechanics. With the exception of Ornstein and Smough, I found DS1's bosses were less difficult than those of Sekiro and the ability to call up co-op players and phantoms helped tremendously.

I dedicated entire evenings going through areas and bosses I never experienced or seen beforehand, and I didn't at all mind the Switch's lack of achievement system as I felt a mixture of relief and achievement when each boss fell to my blade. After numerous deaths to Ornstein and Smough, getting hit by toxic darts at Blighttown, getting smacked by pendulums in Sen's Fortress, falling off the invisible platforms at the Crystal Caverns, and other misadventures for 45 hours, I beat Gwyn on my first try with a Zweihander+13 and Rotten Pine Resin applied to it.

Eight years of progress-halting deaths, aborted playthroughs, and overall disappointment, all rectified when I delivered the final blow to the final boss. After so many years of failure and discouragement, I had finally conquered a nemesis that had lurked in my mind. This realization sank in when I linked the flame and heard Nameless Song📷 over the credits, and I was on my knees crying heavily over my Switch Lite handheld as the credits rolled.

While Sekiro is still my personal favorite From title, I can easily say DS1 is the most personal game I have ever beaten. As tough as Sekiro's endgame is, slaying Gwyn on my first try after years of failure to even get to the Bell Gargoyles will stand as my greatest gaming accomplishment. So for every newcomer who wants to try out Dark Souls Remastered on PS4, Xbox One, Switch or PC, and to every player who is struggling with the game, all I can say is to not lose faith in yourself. You will die. You will lose hours of souls and humanity from obstacles. You will struggle to understand boss patterns in your first go. But there is always a way, and you will come out of each obstacle as a stronger player. So go forth and get the game. And remember to never go hollow.

Demon Titanite in Anor Londo (PS4)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 02:27 AM PDT

Am doing a GLS speed run and based on the wiki thought I had a plan to upgrade it to +3. I now find I am one demon titanite short.

I wasn't totally concentrating when I picked up the two sets of demon titanite from chests in AL. The wiki said that there should be 2 in the chest guarded by the giant sentinel in the first room and then one in the chest just before the first gargoyle. But I can't see how that can be the case.

Can anyone confirm? Is the wiki wrong and there is only one in each chest? I'm on Dark Souls Remastered, PS4.

First time play, finally asking for direction

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:24 PM PDT

I love the game and style but have never beat it and decided to try. I was avoiding walkthroughs but now I'm asking for some advice. The game hasn't been too tough, I did some grinding and stomped the bell gargoyles, pinwheel, and the gaping demon. So which way should I go next? I have blighttown open, tomb of the giant's, the ghosts in the ruins, dragons, the Hydra, and the moonlight butterfly available. Haven't really tried brighttown, tomb of the giant's seems easier with light and I was wondering if there was some, I can kinda deal with ghosts bit can easily get swarmed, only able to defeat a couple dragons in a life, no chance or clue on the Hydra, not a strong magic build so the butterfly hasn't gotten close enough for sword attacks. Am I missing something or just not looking in the right place? Usually I can tell if I can make it through an area but it wasn't obvious and I stopped playing for awhile, I think it's time to pick it up again

will i be able to kill kirk in the depths after placing the lordvessel? Gaping is still alive.

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 01:10 AM PDT

So i just realized i didnt kill Gaping Dragon.

I was bummed because i wanted to do all 3 invasions this time. I was farming humanity in the depths before i face O&S to get fast travel. When i realized i got a soft humanity. which means i didnt kill this areas boss. checked, i dont even have Blighttown key.

I would really like to be able to have access to fast travel before i venture in the depths to fight kirk. But i know that placing the Lordvessel activates his Demon Ruins invasion. And im not sure if by proxy it would negate his depths invasions because ive gone too far in the story.

Co-op is FUCKING AWESOME and did i do something wrong w pve?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 09:05 PM PDT

So first of all, i did my first white soapstone near o&s and helped some guy after trying 3 times w him since he kept dying but it was so dope helping a fellow player out i loved it. Also, i love the game and its challenging dont get me wrong, but am i just good or something at it? Got the game may 26, and i beat it 4 days ago, and im going ng+ rn. I never rlly found any boss crazy hard, especially taking me like 80 tries. Maybe at most 5 to 7 tries per boss, besides bed of chaos since it was more of a puzzle. Im not trying to sound douchey but anyone feel the same?

    Is DSR PvP dead?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 06:28 PM PDT

I finally got DSR a few days ago and I've been loving playing through it. I made it to oolacile and was excited to get stuck in to some PvP after only being invaded once throughout my play through so far. (I've seen its the PvP hotspot in ds1) but I was pretty disappointed to find it seemed completely dead. This is my first time trying PvP in ds1 so I'm not 100% sure on how the matchmaking works so it could just be me. Is DSR PvP dead or is it just me? (SL90 btw)

How Bloodborne (and quarantine) helped me "get" Dark Souls

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 03:07 AM PDT

I first played Dark Souls on PS3 shortly after its release. I heard the hype about this difficult, but fair game and I wanted to try it out. At the time, I thought the gameplay was clunky and slow. I was using heavy armor and a shield, holding L1 on my journey through Lordran. I got to Chaos Witch Quelaag, died once and quit playing for years. Not out of frustration, but due to boredom.

Years later, I got Bloodborne through PS Plus and thought I might as well try it out. It was a revelation. Dark Souls, but focused on speed and aggression instead of turtling and defense. Not only did I love the combat, but I enjoyed the setting, pored over the lore, for a while I was obsessed with the game. I thought Bloodborne was the Dark Souls for me, still under the misconception that Dark Souls was a slow, methodical game.

About a month ago, I bought Dark Souls: Remastered on a whim. I looked up common builds, figuring that if I want to play through Dark Souls, I want to do it as quickly and efficiently as possible. I settled on a vitality build with the Zweihander as my weapon (in part because of the GiantDad meme build).

With light armor and no shield, I realized that I could play Dark Souls similarly to how I played Bloodborne. The game doesn't have to be slow and methodical if you don't want it to be, you can be fast and aggressive. The best boss fights became dances, where I had to learn the enemy's attack patterns and time my attacks and dodges perfectly.

Dark Souls can be hit or miss, I don't think it's a perfect game. However, the highs of Dark Souls are worth the lows. My favorite moments in this game are some of my favorite gaming experiences ever. If I didn't have so many other From Soft games that I've yet to play, I'd probably play it again with a different build.

Best boss: Ornstein & Smough. I used summons to get through the early bosses, but I knew I had to fight O&S solo, since the fight has gained such a legendary reputation. I beat it on my 5th or 6th try, finally learning to recognize their attack patterns and killing off Super Smough despite running out of Estus Flasks felt amazing. Perhaps my favorite boss fight ever.

    Honorable mentions: Sif, Manus, Kalameet

Worst boss: Bed of Chaos. Unique in that this boss fight is difficult, but not especially challenging. I died to BoC more than any other boss, yet when I beat it I didn't feel a sense of accomplishment, I was just glad it was over. I just tried over and over until I lucked into winning. I really hope there isn't a boss like this in any of the sequels.

This post is already too long, but I want to end by noting that my build (Lightning Zweihander, Favor Set, Havel's Ring & Ring of FaP) was basically game-breaking by the end. Gwyn was a joke and I even beat Sanctuary Guardian and Artorias on my first try, though I can't imagine beating Manus if I was taking more damage. I kinda wish there was less emphasis on armor, so the game could be balanced around everyone taking a consistent level of damage. Or maybe the ability to make different builds is part of the fun and I unintentionally found a broken build, I don't know.

It's been 6 months and 4 runs since I died to those archers for the last time... Til' yesterday. Well, at least I wasn't human and I got a twin humanity.

Did I waist all of my red titanite chunks?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 07:38 PM PDT

So yeah, I did a noob oopsie.

It's my first character/playthrough ever. I got a Black Knight Sword early on, and upgraded it as far as it went (+5) and have been with it basically since I'm past Anor Londo. I got Hagel's ring before that, and got enough Endurance to normal roll with it, a Black Iron set and a shield. Never had to change equipment since then, but also, I never saw any of my previous weapons in the enhancing menu either. Like, ever.

Fast forward to a few minutes ago, and I see my Broad Sword, a Curved Sword and such at differenc enhancing tabs (things like Raw, +6, fire, etc) and started experimenting. I saw that upgrading it to fire Broadsword gave me 172 damage + 172 fire damage (at Fire Broadsword +8, I think), which I thought would be more than my current 300-ish Black Knight Sword, but I do half the damage to any enemy?

Obviously, I don't understand weapon upgrading as I thought. Did I waist my materials? Should have I gone Chaos? Or maybe Raw? (Don't even know what that means) Or just go +15?

Edit: Reddit for Android doesn't like when I press "Enter", so I got on my pc and fixed it.
