Dark Souls is my first video game, and today I finished it!

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 10:20 PM PDT

This is my first post on Reddit, please be forgiving if there are any mistakes. I just want to write something to express my feelings. Contains a little bit of spoiler. Also I apologise that this post is a little long.

Growing up, I had limited experiences with video games. Never owned any consoles, and back when we used to have a family computer, I was too young to really do much. So apart from the occasional Wii Sports or Mario Cart at a friend's house I didn't have many hands-on experiences with video games.

I found out about Dark Souls when DS3 first came out and it was really popular amongst YouTube gaming communities. (Can you believe that was about four years ago?) I stumbled upon PewDiePie's stream for DS3 and was immediately hooked. I love the style and basically everything about it - this was also during a period of time where I was interested in Medieval fantasy. And because I enjoy things in chronological order, I dug out PDP's old DS1 videos. After watching a few episodes, I decided that if I ever get to play video games, this is the one that I wanted to try. I stopped watching after a few episodes to avoid any further spoilers because I am determined to play this game one day. (Though sometimes I can't help myself but look at DS related stuff like this subreddit.)

For a little bit more context about me, I have an awful attention span but I also hyper fixate on things. This means that I would only remain interested with a piece of media for a short amount of time - no more than a few weeks, averaging two. Yet somehow, miraculously, for four years, my interest in Dark Souls continued to burn, albeit not as intensely as my other previous fixations but it was always there at the back of my mind.

Then towards the end of last year, I bought a PlayStation. It was a big thing on my bucket list (apart from DS there are also a few other games I wanted to play) and I could finally cross it off. The Dark Souls trilogy was the first proper games that I ever owned. To be honest, I thought that I bit off more than I could chew because DS is notorious for being extremely challenging. I thought I stood no chance being someone who has never gamed before but I didn't let that deter me.

So at this point in time, I held a controller for the first time in my life. I spent hours learning how to walk and move the camera at the same time, looking at the controller to find where the buttons are (had to google L3 and R3), and of course, dying repeatedly for countless times throughout my learning process. I admit I spent an embarrassingly amount of time stuck in Undead Burg.

When life got busy I took a two-month break at Capra Demon, but also because I really struggled with this boss. However, when quarantine started around April, I got more free time back on my hands so I picked it back up.

The first time that I ever got angry was when I was in Blighttown. I found the Great Hollow and unfortunately got cursed. For some reason, I thought that if I kept going down I would end up somewhere useful (The map design for DS is extremely fascinating and complex and I cannot express how much it amazes me) Then when I realised that Ash Lake was a dead end I was close to throwing my controller - but I remembered that it's kind of expensive. I spent about five hours trying to climb out of that damn tree on half health and I never thought I would be that happy to see Blighttown.

Dark Souls is a lot more breathtaking than I could ever imagine. Every detail built towards this incredibly beautiful world. I think one could only really experience it by playing the game - my friends laughed when I told them I played DS for the plot. I quickly fell in love with the setting, the world building, and the characters - especially Laurentius and of course Solaire. Solaire's downfall was really a surprise, and I was devastated when I found him in Lost Izalith.

I played the DLC as well. I had to googled how to get in. As cliché as this might sound, I have to say that Artorias is my favourite boss fight. I went into that arena no less than twenty times and each time I could see myself getting a little bit better. Kalameet is where I really struggled. In retrospect, I think he is probably the hardest boss in the game - at least for me. I couldn't see myself beating him and I was really close to giving up. At one point I wanted to skip him because he was optional, but I remembered reading on this subreddit that when players give up it is the same as their character going hollow. So I pushed on.

And today, I fed all my lord souls into the Lordvessel. Kiln of the First Flame was not what I expected. Every other area in the game I have either heard of or have seen it mentioned before, but this was completely new. This entire area brought forwards a wave of emotions within me. It's the haunting environment, the desolated look, the melancholy... and the fact that I know I have reached the end of a magnificent journey.

For the final boss fight, I was expecting one last adrenaline pumped epic duel. But Dark Souls blew away my expectations yet again. The soundtrack for Gwyn shocked me in a good way, I felt my eyes wet in a mixture of awe and sorrow. It really solidified the brilliant storytelling of this game.

Now at 90+ hours, 30 hours more than Google's average, I can finally say I finished the game! Although I wouldn't call DS perfect, it has its flaws and points of frustrations, but somehow, I feel like Dark Souls means so much more to me than simply just a video game. I spent a lot of late-night hours sitting in front of the TV when the world was silent around me. It really helped to pull me through this mess of a year.

I hope everyone reading this have a lovely day! And don't you dare go hollow!

    Off to DS2 I go :D

What was your “okay this game is next fucking level” moment?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 08:47 PM PDT

For me, it was going through darkroot basin, opening the door, and seeing Havel. I thought it was a duplicate, go upstairs, and boom, I'm in undead burg

    Mind was completely blown

Do you think Dark Souls has made you a more perseverant person?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 04:12 PM PDT

If so, why? Were there any specific life situations where you felt the odds were stacked against you but you ended up not giving up till you achieved your goal?

I only ask because I recently realized that the core loop of Dark Souls gameplay could, in theory, build up one's character for the better and strengthen their self confidence. Have you believed in yourself more perhaps? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Dark Souls prepare to die edition is a testament to how great the game is.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:06 AM PDT

That clunky piece of crap got so many of us hooked. And don't forget it used that Microsoft Windows live POS. The fact we put up with that 30fps motion blur mess is a testament to how great the game is.

What enemy have you killed the most times?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 02:11 AM PDT

I'm thinking about DS1, but if you want to chime in on other Soulsborne games I'd be curious about that as well. (What actually brought this to mind was the poor sap outside Lady Butterfly in Sekiro. I killed that guy 8-9,000 times.)

I'm asking because I've been working on the Four Kings (SL1, no pyro) for a while now, and couldn't guess how many times I've killed the Dark Wraith you meet during the shortcut.

So who you got? Silver knight outside the Anor Londo bonfire? Dogs on the way to Capra Demon? Flame hollow by the bonfire in the Depths?

Basic PvP guide for PvE players

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 03:13 AM PDT

So, I've seen a lot of posts complaining about PvP and I believe this is because pve players miss some of the basic PvP moves and tips (it's true some are hard to find). So I'm going to explain some of these to increase pve players' chances to win in casual PvP. I'm not asking people to enjoy PvP, I'm just trying to help them understand how it works and how to play it in order to boost their experience.

Against chain backstabs To avoid the most simple form of chain backstabs (parry+attack/attack) just wait until the recovery animation finishes, don't try to roll/attack/shield/parry as these will give you less invencibility frames.

Against 1shots If you see the invader is wielding a rapier or dagger put your back against a wall to avoid backstabs and try to attack from there. If you see the invader is wearing crown of dusk and/or a staff equip yourself with a high magic resistant shield or fast roll to avoid powerful spells (quick stamina recovery is recommended). To avoid being easily parried wait half a second between your attacks and if you see the invader adapting to the timing with closer blocks into parry attempts change the timing or directly go for the backstab after an attack. Try to be within the following hp list: • Sen's/Anor Londo: +1250hp • Lord souls:+1500hp • Gwyn/Dlc:1800hp

Against annoying people who stay near enemies If you haven't summoned anyone, pull the plug (it's annoying but this is the easiest solution). If you are playing with friends try to bait the invader+enemies into attacking the one with more chances of surviving (fast roll, big health pool, good armor...) and then eliminate the enemies.

Parry As mentioned before, to parry a spamming invader easily, shield through their first attack and instantly parry to almost guarantee a successful parry. If you are shocked/nervous and think you lost the riposte time make a little step to the left and riposte (this also works for 2handed ripostes but requires a little bit of practice).

Play as dirty as you can If you see the opportunity to throw an invader off the ledge, try to do so. If you have chameleon or hidden body within your slots try to plan an ambush. Throw Lloyds when the invader is at low health. This kind of things will increase your chances of winning. That said, if you don't give the invader a chance to be honorable, don't expect them to not play dirty (they have more resources than you to play like this so consider carefully the situation).

Enjoy the game There is no point in getting mad at twinks that can insta kill you, even the best PvP players still die to them. The invader community also has nice invaders that will try to give you a fair challenge and have a nice time (some even give presents) so don't give twinks that much attention. Try to farm humanities from the depths as soon as you get there (20 humanities should be more than enough).

Remember that invaders aren't God like creatures and you can kill them if you use your cards right. I hope this posts helps people with invasions.

Random thing I learned: If you use magic on the boxes with rats in them before the rats emerge, there's no corpse. (Depths)

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 09:37 PM PDT

I don't know why, but I find this interesting.

Okay so on my billionth new playthrough I decided to be a pure mage. I typically go back and run through the depths after i finish Anor Londo (I just like going through all the areas)

So on my mage build, I manually aimed a soul arrow at one of the boxes where a rat jumps out and attacks you, and the box broke but there was no rat corpse. I tested it on a few other rat-in-a-boxes and same thing. No carcass (which means no chance to loot humanity either).

After, I went back and broke the boxes pre-rat attack but with my lightning spear and there WAS a rat crpse that time.

This vid shows me soul-arrowing the 1st rat box.

    I actually beat Pinwheel!!

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:52 PM PDT

On my 55th attempt I managed to take down Pinwheel's massive health bar, it was seriously a damage check. To take him down I lost all of my estus and humanity, but I still persevered through due to my patience. Imo, he's almost as hard as the asylum demon who took 64 tries for me.

Rip Map Models/Collision Data from Dark Souls (3D Map Viewer)

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 02:34 AM PDT

I have found this 3D Map Viewer on these pages. It's great, but I want to be able to work with the models and see them through isometric view in my 3D editor software.

Anyone knows how can I rip the collision data from this little program or alternatively how can I rip them from the actual game?

I know this is probably a dumb question but how do I quicken casting time? I'm trying to do a pure mage build but I don't want to spend 3 years to cast a basic soul arrow

After beating Gwyn, I wanted to sacrifice myself to the flame. To enjoy the cutscene more, I wanted to go back to the lord vessel and make myself human. I exited the arena and well... you know. Did this happen to anyone else? Just wondering.

    Annoying PVP

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 09:58 PM PDT

    Hey all!

A friend and I have been trying to go through Dark Souls recently together. We did this with Bloodborne and had a blast.

However, we've been stuck in a quite annoying area in Dark Souls. The game isn't the problem, its the OP players that spawn in for PVP. It wouldn't be an issue normally. Im fine with an occasional battle. But for the past few days we've been trying to clear this area and have been constantly attacked by the same person, over and over. And each time, they kill us almost instantly because they're so much stronger then us.

Does anyone have any tips to get better at PVP? I'm sick of getting squished by giant firey swords.

    Thanks!

Fastest way to get 10 humanity from a new game?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 01:34 AM PDT

I want to do a demon's greataxe build and I'd like to get a drop from the taurus demon if possible. I've found enough to get around 5-6 (1 from asylum, 3 at firelink and I think 1 or 2 in the burg itself), are there any other locations I've missed? Rather not have to farm the burg for loose humanity if I can avoid it.

Is the crow a Super Metroid reference?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 01:28 AM PDT

The other day I was playing some Metroid on the Switch and I got to the part where you have to morph into a ball and lay in the hands of a Torizo statue so that it will carry you across some untraversable terrain. Then it struck me: there's another game where you roll into a ball to be picked up by a bird. A game with world design and exploration heavily inspired by Super Metroid. So is this a conscious reference? Maybe this is actually well known and I'm just an idiot?

What build/weapon to make early game more interesting?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2020 01:12 AM PDT

I have played all Souls games several times except DS1 but im ready to playthrough it again. I've completed it once and really enjoyed it albeit slower than some of the other titles, I found the world more interesting.

    However

I felt like early game drags on for ages without finding anything too interesting. I remember by the time I rang the bells and got past blighttown I was a little fed up.

Now I'm not criticising the game at all, it was definitely my fault for choosing the wrong build or completely missing some items so basically my question is, what build to choose and what weapon can I pick up early to make it a little more interesting early game?

I believe I was running DEX and had a balder side sword last time. Maybe something like a role play would be cool, like an axe murderer or a heavy armored knight (which I never usually go for) I'm open to magic also. Sorry if it sounds like im complaining im just so unfamilliar with DS1 compared to the others.
