Aldia's voice actor did a really great job!

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 06:57 AM PDT

To be honest, from all Soulsborne games, Aldia's voice is my favourite by far. Its just spine chilling. I have to admit, i not really like DS2 but I replayed it a lot of times just to hear that "Young Hollow", "Peace grants the men the illusion of life", or my favourite : "A Lie Remains A Lie!"

So i just want to give credit the voice actor, I hope he will return in Elden Ring...!

A Prism Stone trade with Dyna and Tilo is actually quite good

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:37 PM PDT

So over many playthroughs I have traded the two types of smooth and silky stones as well as petrified something with the birds in the Things Betwixt, but I never really bothered much with their lowest grade of trade, a prism stone, until I took a real look at it today. These can be purchased infinitely for 300 each at Sweet Shalquoir once you have opened the Shrine of Winter. Trading a prism stone gets you 1 of 10 different items which I am going to assume have an equal chance of being selected for the trade:

    Amber Herb

    Fading Soul

    Homeward Bone

    Human Effigy

    Lifegem

    Rubbish

    Small Blue Burr

    Small Orange Burr

    Small Yellow Burr

    Titanite Shard

If my assumption about the probability is correct (and I suppose that is a large assumption to make), then in a large enough sample size you would get 1 of each item for every multiple of 10 prism stones you traded (at a total cost of 3000 souls per 10). 3000 souls is also the price you pay for the vast majority of human effigies you buy from vendors. So for the same vendor price of just one effigy, you seemingly can get 9 more items for free.

If you get something useless to you like a homeward bone (if you have the feather) or burrs (if you use the miracle great magic barrier), you can still sell them to Lonesome Gavlan to help offset some of the net loss from that transaction. Even if we assume only the human effigy, life gem, and titanite shard are worth the vendor cost (3000, 300, and 1000) and everything else is trash to sell to Lonesome Gavlan for a total of 640 souls (which isn't always the case, particularly with the amber herb); you are still getting 4,940 souls worth of useful product at a cost of 3,000 souls.

Something to consider if you start running low on effigies (while trying to kill Darklurker or something), but have plenty of souls to burn and you are tired of farming dogs.

    All Twinkling Titanite farming methods?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 06:29 PM PDT

    Greetings, skeletons!

You may know me as the guy with too much free time and an unabashed love for spreadsheets - I posted a breakdown on Titanite Chunks here recently.

I'm now testing to find the best way to farm Twinkling Titanite, and I need to make sure I'm testing all the viable methods.

First, the criteria for a method to be included:

    • Infinitely repeatable; if a method includes using an ascetic, it must also return an ascetic Similarly, no non-respawning enemies. EDIT: I'm going to walk this rule back; please suggest the best runs for Twinkling Titanite, be they from loot or one-time enemies or w/e, and I will test them, provided they are very good. Otherwise it will take weeks to weed out lesser runs.
    • Offline-only; my guides come with the guarantee that they are available to all players! Not all players - myself included - can play online, so online methods will not be included.
    • Reasonable chance of being a viable method. This is a very open criteria and very few suggestions, if any, will be rejected on these grounds. I will try most anything, and any suggestions given here will be tested at least a handful of times, even if they don't meet this criteria. That said, I am giving my time freely to this project, and I prefer to do so as productively as possible.
    • EDIT: The method must work on any platform, and also either version of the game; it also must work on current patch. My bad, forgot to mention that originally.

I currently have four methods on the docket:

    1. Dragon Aerie Ascetic Runs; Testing the full run, as well as different routes and variations to find the highest TT-per-Minute
    2. Archdrake Pilgrim/Amana Priestess; specifically, the group just back from the Rhoy's Resting Place bonfire. If you think there is a better group/run, please do let me know
    3. Poison Statue Cluster; I very much doubt this will be a viable method, but I want to confirm this drop (drop has been confirmed courtesy of u/swearingpirate below!), and I also like the challenge of creating a route from scratch. Also worth noting that these are by far the earliest method available.
    4. Rampart Golems Frozen Golems; u/TheHittite below has confirmed that the Rampart Golems do not drop Twinkling, but the Frozen Golems do. Any suggestions for routing these enemies would be appreciated.

Not included, but mentioned here for the sake of covering all methods is the Sinner's Rise Flexile Sentry. I can see no way in which the elevator time is worth the single chance for a drop, even if it dropped everytime.

    Edit

On further consideration, I'm going to walk back the requirement for runs to be inherently repeatable. As a result of the Aldia's Keep Ascetic Farming method, any ascetic-based run is technically repeatable. Given that, I will test some of the better non-repeatable runs, just to ensure that I am leaving nothing on the table. These guides will detail the definitive, absolute best methods in the entire game. I can't make that claim if I leave any reasonable option untested.

If you see anything I'm missing here, please do let me know! Likewise, if anyone can confirm the Rampart Golem or the Poison Statue Cluster drops, that would be appreciated.

Edit: Most importantly, I need suggestions on the best areas/runs in regards to TT from loot and/or non-respawning enemies, given that ascetics themselves are infinitely farmable.

    Thanks :D

Does Scholar of the First Sin (DS2) have the better storylines out of the series??

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:37 AM PDT

I know alot of people hated the storyline in DS2, with some hating every aspect of the game. I used to be like that too, but that's because I never sat down and properly have this game a chance. Weirdly, in a way, I'm coming to realize that for the flaws it has, DS2 may have one of the best storylines of the series when you take the time to learn and read about the lore, even moreso when you can directly experience it. The Last Giant, why he runs towards you when you enter his room (hint: giants memories explains why), the long plotline of King Vendrick being some bad ass king, you finally take out Velstadt (who is still human mind you), only to walk into Vendricks room and see he has become nothing more than a pathetic shell of the man he once was, and that by granting his death you're essentially preserving his honor and dignity. Then you realize the reason why you had to fight so many damn bosses leading up to Vendrick, it was to essentially hide the knowledge that the once mighty, feared, King Vendrick, is now nothing but a docile hollow. It's sad really, we especially when you realize that Nashandra caused all this to happen (and that Vendrick in a way, still loved her). I honestly believe that the Ivory King and Alsannas storyline is truly heartbreaking (but not as heartbreaking as Sif and Artorias...I still cannot bring myself to kill Sif to this day, especially after saving Sif from Oolacile. How he recognizes the chosen undead years later as his saviour, only to realize that one of you are not walking out of the arena alive, then you have Sif limping 1/4 away from death, that fucking hurts). My friend hates DS2, says it has no story at all and adds nothing to the lore. It does have a story, a very tragic one, but as always, there are no happy endings in the DS franchise.

How bad is the covenant item farming?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I'm thinking about getting the platinum for this game or DSR, but this is the only one that makes me question my decision. Did this in Dark Souls 3 and pretty close to platinum it. Are they as bad as in Dark Souls 3?

Company of Champions - Lucatiel Quest Achievement

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:36 PM PDT

I'm looking to get the Lucatiel quest achievement, but I was interested in doing some quick infusion stone farming via the basilisks in Things Betwixt.

If I don't get the stone drops I want, can I join the Company of Champions to continue farming and then abandon the covenant once I do, without messing up Lucatiels quest?

I wasn't sure if joining the covenant would mess up the summon requirements for Lucatiel.

    Thank you!

I am a new player and i'm asking for build advice

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:49 AM PDT

I am new to this game, and i've read some build guides on Internet.

Right now im playing with a Melee Dex Build, and the guide says to aim powerstance black katanas https://darksouls2.wiki.fextralife.com/Master+Dex+Build

Can you give some advice to make the game better for me? I am a PVM only, and i think im losting a lot of content just using Dex and Melee. I dont know, but something feels off...

Should I invest more points into Faith and Int to try to mix a few things? Is powertance viable at PvM only? Are this DEX build designed to be played at PvM only?

My build: VGR: 20, END: 20, VIT: 20, STR: 12, DEX: 30, ADP: 20, INT (Minimum) FAITH (Minimum)

    Class: Swordman

I've just killed The Lost Sinner

    Question about endings/DLC

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 01:50 PM PDT

I played regular ds2 back in the day and recently got Scholar edition. From what I've seen, this adds an extra final boss after the queen or whatever (along with all the other changes to the world).

Also this one doesn't automatically start ng+ after the final boss does it? So I can go do all the dlcs after the boss? Or is there a better order to do them?

Basically I want just 1 complete run through and the best (story wise, not difficulty) way to go.

    Thanks in advance!

    Is dark hail worth using?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 08:14 AM PDT

So I'm playing a hexer character, absolutely fucking loving it, the aesthetic, the damage, the combination of faith and int, everything, really like it. So I went out of my way to get dark hail after absolutely destroying the ruin sentinels (mace + dark weapon is insane), I noticed it's a lot like dark bead from the first game in a lot of ways and was wondering if it was just as good, worse but still good, or utter trash. What do you guys think?

Does anyone feel like Smelter Demon is actually easier than Old Iron King?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 01:04 PM PDT

After having done them both many times on playthroughs, I've had more problems with Old Iron King. Smelter Demon has attacks that make sense and feels very rhythmic to dodge, and it's my favourite fight in the game because all the attacks feel fair to dodge. Old Iron King feels very random in what he wants to do. I've had him use the fire breath attack 6 times in a row, and even with 105 agility I still fail to dodge it 50% of the time because the hitbox feels larger than the visual. Even when I seem to dodge his fist attack it lingers and still knocks me over, sometimes straight into the lava pit. I've heard people say that Smelter Demon is the hard boss and Old Iron King the easy one, but to me it feels like it's the other way around.

Theory: The Women in the Opening Cinematic and the Emerald Herald are the same person

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:35 PM PDT

In the opening of the game we see our heroes past life fade under the weight of the curse. An old woman tells us of Drangleic, and implies a cure may be found there. Then we see the Bearer of the Curse enter a wood with fireflies and fall into a large vortex.

    Bear with me here...

In Dark Souls 1, when we enter the dlc we see a vortex very similar to the one in the opening cinematic of 2, this vortex takes us back in time to Oolacile. We also see fireflies when we go back in time to the giant memories, just like in the opening before our hero falls. Both of these imply to me that our hero is going back in time. This is supported by the line "Long ago, a great king built a great kingdom", which seems to suggest that Drangleic was in the past

Later, when we talk to the Emerald Herald at the Dragon Aerie she says "Bearer of the Curse, it was my own manifestation that brought you here." This seems a pretty direct confirmation, since it was the old woman that told us of Drangleic at the beginning.

One last little tidbit. When we encounter the Emerald Herald outside Drangleic Castle, she says "If you are the next true monarch, then one day you will walk these grounds... Without really knowing why." This line seems to mirror the woman in the intros line "But one day you will stand before it's decrepit gate... Without really knowing why." And she's talking ABOUT Castle Drangleic.

So, I don't know if this is common knowledge. But it seems to me that these two characters are explicitly one and the same

Im not sure if this is entirely Dark Souls 2 related

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 09:32 AM PDT

My friend made a subreddit, r/DumbDarkSouls, and he's been trying to get someone to notice it for about 2 months. He's not gonna be on Reddit for like a week, so he wants me to try and get some people to join it.

Im pretty sure the subreddit is where you can share invaders being stupid, the AI being glitchy, or your own mistakes. I think every souls game is allowed, even Bloodborne (maybe)

It would mean the world to him if at least a few people joined it before he got on again. thanks!

    I love velstadt

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 10:50 PM PDT

The cutscene and music is so cool. First of all I like the red effect they put on certain bosses. But velstadt and his golden armor patiently waiting and in service of his king who's pretty much a hollow zombie now. And the fact that you can see the outlines of his face... somehow he's not hollow? He literally lasted longer than the King. The notion of these super loyal entities that are committed to their cause is admirable and cool. These hoes ain't loyal.
