    Pond of the Dead

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 04:08 AM PDT

Got to kill Graverobber, Varg and Cerah in one attempt in my current run, and I'm pretty proud about myself for once.

Using a STR build and power stancing my 2 lovely +10 maces, the best way to nail it was : run, hit archer, the others catch up? Jump in the left pond, roll roll roll your boat to go out, heal if necessary, run back to the archer, hit, repeat

Then deal the same way with the ninja one. Then the guy that look like Havel from DS1

Is there any other efficient and quicker way to deal with them?

DS2 plot and progression. How was I supposed to know any of this?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 09:06 AM PDT

Spoilers throughout, so stop reading now if you haven't finished the main game.

I tried really really hard to play a no-guide run of DS2. I got it off Steam a while back and finally decided to take the plunge. But there were so many times I was just baffled and stuck because it was impossible to figure out what to do. I ended up going to guides and my immediate though was, "How the hell was I supposed to know to do that?" Here are some examples:

    • In order to access the Undead Woods, you need to go back to the unknown device on the path out of Majula to Heide's Tower. However, there's literally no reason to EVER go that way after completing the area. You would simply take the bonfire from Majula to Heide's.

    • After completing the Dragon Shrine, how was I supposed to know that I had to investigate Giant corpses to progress the plot? There's no plot linking the Dragons and the Giants as far as I can tell. In fact, outside of being a backdrop event, there's no reason to think the Giants were any more important to the plot than any other random boss. But they are somehow critically linked in a way that is never explained. They even show up in the final cutscenes.

    • How was I supposed to know that I needed to return to the Throne of Want, even though it was an area I cleared out earlier? And while I knew (after returning) from the Emerald Herald that the queen was waiting for me there, how was I supposed to know that this was the climactic battle of the game? In DS1, I knew that confronting the Lord of Cinder was the final battle. In DS2, I beat Nashandra, saw a portal to go investigate a throne and poof the game ended. Huh?

    • How the HELL was I supposed to know that in order to progress in Drangleic Castle I needed to lure mobs from one room to another and then kill them in front of a statue?

I can't remember anything similar in DS1. Sure things were hidden or difficult to get to, but there was always an avenue or an incomplete path I could head down that invariably would move the game forwards. There was never a need to go over a place that was already explored and look for something new. We're there signs and conversations I missed along the way that I missed? Was it obvious that Nashandra was the big baddie in the game? I knew she was evil, but not the end-boss.

Why I feel Dark Souls 2 has the Deepest (Most Meaningful) Lore. (Thesis warning! , will need a few minutes to read!)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 01:46 PM PDT

Long thread warning in advance. This might turn into a "mah depression thread" but hopefully I type it a little better than that. if this post gets too personal, let me know Mods. It doesn't have much structure I would say and tends to ramble so, I ask you to bare with me lol. Hopefully, it is coherent enough to make sense.

So anyways this is a post I have been wanting to write for a while once I was in "the mood" to do it. I'll begin it off by saying as you have probably seen many times before, that this will be a thread about depression, mental illness, and how Soulsborne has helped me cope with it. As a brief history, I've been dealing with abuse among other things ever since I was a child, with it having spiked starting about ten years ago. This of course led into the breakup of my family, and all the scars that follow along with that. In the summer of 2016 I realized I had developed deep depression, and it grew very deep beginning in early 2017. I had yet to play souls borne at the time, though I knew it for the "hardest games ever" memes.

Fast forward to fall 2017, I am in the middle of a midlife crisis and after taking a break from college due to mental health reasons, I enrolled in some art courses. I always wanted to be both a writer and artist but never worked up the courage to start as I do not have any sort of natural talent regarding those things lol. It was in my intro to traditional drawing class that someone mentioned to me about the music of dark souls and I should try it. I was a big fantasy music fan for things like FFXIV, or really anything with an emotional orchestra. So after some apprehension, I finally listened to music. I remember originally seeing glimpses of Soul of Cinder's boss battle the previous year when everyone was streaming the release of DS3. Sure enough, his music was the first I listened to, and when the second phase hit (before I even knew it was an homage to Gwyn's piano) I got nailed in the feels.

Soon after I basically bought dark souls 3, all just because of the music, which tends to happen. I have started entire games or MMORPGs because of their soundtrack, and it's usually worked out lol. So I end up playing through DS3 and eventually complete all of it, including the DLC. I basically did all my major art projects to the DS3 soundtrack alone that year. Following DS3 is when I first entered DS2 and bloodborne at the same time. I ended up finishing bloodborne first due to it being more similar to ds3's gameplay speed. (That was definitely a deep game, but it would not eclipse ds2 lore-wise.)

I return to DS2 and fully play it out, making sure I get all my interactions with Aldia (though I never did the crown dlc). Long story short, DS2 was the first game to make just sit there while the credits roll, and think while saying "that was deep..." Eventually, when I would return to the series to replay ds1 remastered after a long break, and going back to ds2, it really hit me how DS2 is my favorite just for the lore alone.

DS2 strays away from the other soulsborne games whereas it focuses on people, humanity, and their psyche. While the other games focus on your traditional high fantasy elements, gods, magic, etc. DS2's lore and character side stories really are the best metaphor for a battle against depression out of any of the games. Almost every character's side story explores the psychology behind their despair, sense of inevitability, and the little hope left in trying to stop the approaching hollowing of the undead curse, something which has ruined society for who knows how many years after Lordran. Luciatel, Vendrick, and Aldia are the biggest examples of this. Between the musings of Aldia and Vendrick and lLuciatel, you really witness what an inevitable "doomsday' scenario does to people. You see the desperation, and then the utter despair and defeat that befalls Vendrick especially, when he realizes Nashandra's machinations, and flees to the Crypt, unable to stop the curse, only able to stop his former love.

Aldia's dialogue, philosophical as ever, really hits home the theme of trying to find a path beyond the cycle ( in my case the never-ending depression) while he muses on how people try to remain blissfully ignorant of reality until it gets to the point where it can no longer be ignored (the curse appearing) His writing really strikes me as I feel it also hits a lot of how society is today. People tend to take things at face value, not looking into the meaning of things, and it often ends up leading to a lack of fulfillment in life. Similar to how people who suffer depression try to ignore it at times, for various reasons such as fear of judgment, etc. Yet when it fully this, do they realize the damaging effects that ignoring it has caused. You can see how desperation or despair can really drive the human mind and soul to dark places, such as Aldia's eventual dark experiments that caused even Vendrick to condemn him. He sacrifices everything, even his own morality, in what would become a vain attempt to try and save himself and humanity from the encroaching doomsday curse of hallowing.

Then we go to our main 'antagonists' the children of Manus. Each daughter further exploring the topic of human psychology, by being a literal embodiment of human emotions. Nashandra the victim of want and lust, Nadalia, victim of loneliness, Elana, victim of wrath and anger, and finally Alsana, the victim of fear. Each character's entire existence is driven by the emotion they embody, to the point it essentially consumes them, except for Alsana, who was saved by the Ivory king, thanks to his unending compassion and kindness. She was able to go beyond her nature, because of other people. However, the other three sisters, especially Nashandra, did not have this. Instead, their kingdoms fell to ruin, or they helped cause it. I am a writer, and I often enjoy analyzing antagonists in particular as they usually end up the most "human" characters in a story due to their motivations an development

I have often debated whether Nashandra is a true "villain" as we typically call the character. I know she is the main reason aside from the curse that Drangleic fell, due to her manipulation. However as we can see in the DLC, it seems obvious Vendrick still loves her, considering he calls her "my dear shandra." I'm sure if we had someone we dearly loved, it would be hard to let go, despite whatever major betrayal, it's just being human. But as I said, I sometimes wonder if Nashandra is really more just a 'force of nature" alongside Elana and Nadalia. They are consumed by the emotions, and I wonder if their nature had been counteracted like Aslana's did, would they have become good essentially, as she did?

I highlight the daughters of menus due to their theme of human emotions, plus Aslana is a perfect example of what support and kindness from others can do to someone who is in essence consumed by fear or despair, etc. If it wasn't for the help of others in my family and friend circles, I do not know what might have happened. Things like this are what DS2 really captures the essence of when it comes to depression and psychology. A lot of the music is also very good at conveying these stories, as good music usually does. You hear the somberness in Aldia's theme and it reminds you of his sacrifices, plus the inevitability that the world faces with the curse. Ivory King's theme is powerful, bombastic, since yer fighting in Hell, but it also has a tone of tragedy, as you are fighting to save a fallen king and hero who sacrificed everything to save his people, his wife, and the world at large from the old chaos. Finally, another big mention is Sinh, the dragon. I do not know if Sinh would have been benevolent if he had even been awake before Sir Yorgh ransacked the city. But, in his theme when it swaps to the choir only, you can hear the tragic notes they sing, highlighting the tragedy of the sunken king, his people, and Sinh who himself was wrong by attempted murder, just for his blood. (Not to mention the tragedy of Sir Alonne and the Iron King, whose music describes the memory taking place, since you are roleplaying as the Iron King in the memory I assume)

So, I feel I have covered my main points if you made it this far I think you for reading this conglomerate of talking points and reflection. I am sure I could have nailed some points better, but this post was written kinda freeform. Dark Souls 2 is really a prime example of storytelling focused around the nature of being human, psychology, and dealing with philosophy and grief. If you have any thoughts on things, let me know. Hopefully, it was coherent enough lol. If something isn't clear let me know, I can probably explain things better in individual posts.

Thanks again for reading my "thesis.

Xbox One Bluetooth Controller not working/ undetected on PC (SotFS)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 01:47 PM PDT

I hadn't played DSII in a while and wanted to do a run to get all achievements but I boot up the game and my controller (which works for literally every other game that I have) suddenly isn't detected.

I have used it before and probably have a couple hundred hours played over a bluetooth connection. (plugging it in has no effect, either) It's probably only been a few months or so since playing the game normally.

I have looked up other posts with similar problems but their solutions don't work.

Such as: disabling HID game controller in device manager, even hidden devices.

In my bluetooth settings it says I have 2 separate controllers paired but one of them I can't remove, even through device manager I can't uninstall it, it doesn't even show up. So that may be the problem?

This is quite worrying because I love DSII and I would like to play it again. If you know any other tricks or something else I could have missed please help.

(All my drivers and windows version are up to date)

Is there any way tk get end game gear at the start? (Honest question)

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 11:57 AM PDT

I'm not talking about twink. I just want fashion early game, then I will speedrun to the PvP state. The equips aren't particularly strong.

I played a PvE character for too long, and long trespassed the sm treshold for PvP. I want to PvP, but I am done with the PvE. I mean that it doesn't interest me as much.

The items I want are (all +0):

    • Longsword (kinda early game, so no matter)
    • Stone parma
    • Watcher helmet
    • Grave warden top
    • Benhart leggings
    • Engraved gauntlets

Could someone help me? Is there even any way I could be helped?

    Are Fist Weapons Frowned Upon?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:17 AM PDT

Got invaded in FotFG. I'm running a duel caesti build at the moment and after a few combos they would occasionally use the "No Way" gesture.

Now when I'm being invaded I generally don't care what I do to win, but I do plan on using the RSS at some point, and I like to fight honorably when I'm summoned as a red phantom. Hell I like to fight fair when I'm an invader! I'm genuinely scared I'm using some kind of cheap, unspoken "try-hard" build.

Likely just my lack of experience in online in general. I played the first 4 FromSoftware titles offline and only now got into the multiplayer aspects so the unspoken language of gestures and what's considered "legit" are lost on me

New player here. I want to farm Old Radiant Gems / Lockstones from minions in Royal Rat Authority bossfight. In order to have biggest droprate, defeating NG+ version of Belfry Gargoyles seems pretty plausible.

However, with such a gank as this boss, I won't be able to do it without being hit. I have 18 VGR, around 1200 HP. Using pretty much starter Knight class armor, not upgraded. My main question is - will I get ohko'd by NG+ Gargoyles attacks? If yes, will Brightbug help? Or any other tips?

Maybe DS2 takes place close to the same time as DS1?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2020 09:22 AM PDT

I was playing and started thinking that if it's on a whole other continent, then while they might have the bonfires happening and the undead rising, they may not have any knowledge left of the lore or the quest to link the flame over there. So during the whole time that countless undead strive to link the flame in DS1, simultaneously, the undead in DS2 might be working to resolve their own understanding of the mystery of their endless existence.

It probably doesn't line up right, but I thought it was funny.
