Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

I don't mind losing souls, unless those souls came from a boss kill

    Posted: 18 May 2020 02:20 AM PDT

For some reason it really gets me. I just lost 16k souls, not a big deal. I'm level 30 so it would buy me maybe three levels? Who cares right?

Except 10k of those were from killing Moonlight Butterfly. Makes me feel like I've been robbed.

Obviously it's silly but they were my reward souls dammit!

Sekiro gameplay and dark souls gameplay

    Posted: 18 May 2020 03:56 AM PDT

I have seen countless posts of people bashing dark souls by saying its clunky and sekiro is smooth and i dont a mind a change to gameplay people enjoy different things and might be a better direction for from software but seeing people bashing dark souls (kinda like people bashing old god of war games when god of war 2018 came out)really really broke my heart yes its faster but i feel like people are betraying dark souls idk maybe its just me :'(

    Oh. My. God.

    Posted: 17 May 2020 09:26 PM PDT

I was just listening to MatthewMatosis' Demon's Souls commentary and he said Miyazaki was influenced by the Fighting Fantasy series of books. I was already vaguely aware of this and how he sometimes didn't pick everything up due to them being in English, which inspired Dark Souls' very mysterious lore. But it wasn't until now that I knew the name of the series.

Way back when I was a young lad I actually had one of these books, Forest of Doom, and it bugged me for years whenever I would think back to this choose your own adventure style book that I had and could never ever remember the name, only that it was in a forest and that I died a lot.

Well now I know - Fighting Fantasy: Forest of Doom. Mind blowing! Wasn't sure who else to share this with, haha.

I Think the Bed of Chaos isn't that bad

    Posted: 17 May 2020 05:10 PM PDT

Apart from the massive sweepers, stupid fucking holes in the floor, bonfire 5 minutes away from the entrance, dumbass platforming mechanics, not even really being a proper boss, being a compulsory boss to complete the game, massive pillars of fire, god damn fucking dumb big arms that sweep you in holes and you can't do anything about it and a strategy that laughs in the face of everything you've been taught thus far in the game, I think it's not such a bad boss.

Unpopular Opinion - Dark Souls combat is better than the combat in Bloodborne or Dark Souls 3.

    Posted: 17 May 2020 04:20 PM PDT

Dark Souls combat is slower and more methodical, it's true. But is that necessarily a bad thing?

DS1 combat feels like it has weight behind it. Stamina cost for pretty much EVERYTHING is higher, so you have to actually fight intelligently. If you just mindlessly spam attacks, you'll quickly run out of stamina and be unable to defend yourself.

DS3/BB doesn't really feel the same. Every attack feels like you're swinging a flyswatter. Stamina consumption is MUCH lower for attacks, and virtually nonexistent for rolls/dodging. This kind of encourages spamming attacks until your stamina is almost gone, and then just rolling/dodging away. Spamming attacks is further encouraged by game mechanics like DS3's hyperarmor, or BB's ability to regain health by....spamming attacks.

DS1 supported many different playstyles. It seems like DS3 and BB were designed around the premise that the player should learn to play the game with the developer's favored playstyle, by reducing the effectiveness of other approaches.

    First Time Running Strength

    Posted: 18 May 2020 02:57 AM PDT

So I have played DS1/DSR countless times, but this is my first time running a character where I built strength first. I always started as a Pyro or Sorc, and it was a blast. This time I decided to switch it up. I picked Pyro because I am used to the loadout and love the look, but leveled nothing but strength. I even sprinted to the Zweihander first thing. Holy HELL! A +5 Zweihander nukes just about everything pre-Anor Londo! Definitely loving this run so far!

Update: I killed Sif as my 2nd boss. Big boi at start, master key, got a Stone Greatshield and Zweihander, grinded to level 40, and Sif was my 2nd boss, 1st try. 🤣

Does framerate affect parry and roll ?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 03:03 AM PDT

    Stupid question incoming.

I often see people refering to "frames" when talking about parry or rolls. So let's say something lasts 10 frames.

Instinctively, it would mean that if your game runs at 60fps, it actually lasts 1/6 second, and that it is shorter at 144 fps and longer at 30 fps...

But that doesn't make sense to me because it looks weird that such a central part of the gameplay relies that way on your settings...

Can anyone explain this to me ?

    Thanks in advance

How can you level up a covenant?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 03:37 AM PDT

I have not been doing things for covenants in thisngame or ds3. I want to unlock the Izilith door and I need to be rank 2 of the Chaos covenant. I have the required items but I don't know how you do it. Do you just go to the lady in the domain and it asks if you want to rank up or is it automatic?

A Comprehensive Guide on how to get Infinite Souls and Humanity + Duping any item.

    Posted: 17 May 2020 06:50 PM PDT

Since many people have been asking for glitches in DSR (since most speedruns are where people look for glitches and all speedruns are on the original) that give infinite souls/humanity or allow you to dupe items, I made a video guide on my YouTube channel. Enjoy!

    Humanity and perpetuation of cycle

    Posted: 18 May 2020 03:11 AM PDT

Hey there. Recently I've been playing DSR (on switch) and while helping some players to beat gape dragon, I had some time to think about the concept of humanity and how it overall blends into the lore via gameplay. And more importantly: what does this concept communicate when sewed throughout whole story.

disclaimer: sorry, if it's obvious and 've been point out before. Plus, i'm not DS expert, so correct me if i'm getting something wrong. Plus, some speculations on my part are "as is".

Also there are some minor spoilers.

The best starting point of discussion humanity is the concept of Hollowness. Hollow are those who lose all their humanity and basically those who cannot carry on with the quest. It strikes me, that all corpses you can pick items from are someone who didn't manage it on their way in their quest, and they became hollow and probably died one last time.

Game is rather vague about whether all heroes you come across are different person or same. I think Dark Souls makes a really good illustration how multiverse would look like. Because story is linear for the most part, I always thought, that all phantoms are just different version of the same chosen undead from other parallel universes. And these universes are colliding in one point in reality.

At this point, with all the details put into the game, it bugs me: why phantoms? And why don't they have footstep sound? While phantoms can interact with the world of summoner in a gameplay, i think the overall concept tries to communicate idea like it's just hero's imagination. Like someone who sleep walks, consciousness of a hero draws those possible version of him\herself to justify "sleepwalk" actions and is more material manifestation of our tendency to plan ahead and try to approach situation differently. (i.e. what if i wasn't a guy with sword, but a girl with a spear - how would it turn out otherwise, etc) And most importantly, how it allows us to beat difficulties if we take different approach. (summoning a phantom is a more gameplay-y in that sense)

Now, to better understand concept of humanity it is good to point out, that it is always awarded by going forward in the story, regardless of your decisions. You either get it by killing monsters (soft), gathering it from corpses, or by helping as a phantom.

It's also interesting, that you can gain humanity being a darkwraith. And while darkwraith's are painted as rather "negative" characters overall, i think their ability to gain humanity highlights philosophical point like "it's unimportant what are you doing, it's rather about fact that you're doing what you decided to do."

And underlines that being human is moving forward.

When you first meet Pyromancer (in the depths) he's sitting inside a barrel. And we can find some corpses of hollow undead inside barrels along our journey. I initially thought that these are some kind of torture methods, but from different perspective: they are just heroes, who tried to hide out of despair and gone hollow. Big number of the hollow corpses around the world are not violently killed ones, but sitting or hiding in some tight spots. In despair.

Now. Why would you lose your "human" form and respawn as undead? And why you need to sacrifice humanity to become human again? While in game humanity is an item, I think it's also an abstract, which in theory can be looked as: what if there's no physical item "humanity"? What if it's just an item which hero's mind "draws" in reality to communicate that the void inside hero's soul is filled\gained something that hero can use to move forward?

And there's that: I think act of using humanity to reverse hollowing is the act of sacrificing part of your inner gains to move forward - doing what I marked above as "being human". And not all heroes who die along the way respawn as players. Some go hollow (die and go offline forever), thus losing their humanity and never taking an action of becoming human again. And never making a decision to take risk and move forward.

Now, kindling. Why does it affect all players in the area? I think it is rooted in the human nature to sacrifice part of yourself, your humanity, to make world around better for others. At least this is what it tries to communicate, in my view. Even if you kindle to get yourself more estus, it clearly shows, that your actions have repercussions, which might affect you. You never know, if those one estus will end up being in hands of phantom which helps you, or tries to kill you.

And, lastly, humanity for help with bosses: sometimes we all stuck at some places, and our only option is to help others on their journey. But not all heroes (i.e. characters for that matter) who help you make it further than the point they helped you with. But for those who want to move forward helping others is the easiest way to break the cycle for themselves and move forward too.

Sorry for rather inconsistent explanation. But to wrap it up:

Dark Souls, stripped from it's fantasy lore, is a story about human persistence and human will, and how we move through life. All our actions affect those we meet along the way.

Some heroes you meet are 1 spare estus away from their flame extinguished forever. "Don't you dare go hollow" as they say. But also don't let others around you to.

    (thank you for you attention)

    I think I made a kawaii character *-*

    Posted: 17 May 2020 11:54 AM PDT

I love making cute characters for every game I play that allows for character customization. And DS make it somewhat of a challenge to me, since I can't figure out so much how the character will look during the creation menu. But now I am killing undead by being cute 😄 The straightsword you see in the picture is only for decoration, it really is the cuteness getting all the kills 🤭

    Posted: 18 May 2020 02:09 AM PDT

I believe they can be, if they actually can read and adapt to opponents playstyle and wakeup options. What do you guys think?

If you want to sit down and listen to this topic, I just made a commentary video about it :) Please check it out

[PC] DS1 Remaster - Failed to Summon / Summoning Failed

    Posted: 18 May 2020 12:07 AM PDT

These are the settings I used in my network settings.Region: Global

    MM Password: ***is

    Launch: Online

    Visibility: UnrestrictedRank Reg: ON

I cannot connect to my friend from Croatia. I am from India. We can see each other's summon sign, but it always says: Failed to Summon or Summoning Failed or something on those lines.

I saw a PS4 fix that says to Test Network settings, but what about PC.

Edit: I am human. I also am 2 levels below my friend who is trying to connect to me.
Edit 2: I can confirm that we can play together on Dark Souls 3. Only DS Remaster is where we can't.

    Best/funniest messages you’ve read?

    Posted: 17 May 2020 08:03 PM PDT

Whether they make no sense, they're an inside joke from another FromSoft title, or it's someone being a cheeky chap, what're your favorite messages that you can remember?

mine are "Woman!" perfectly placed in front of the Emerald Herald in DS2, and "wondrous Bonfire, you're in the know right?" near a very familiar looking flame in Bloodborne. Unfortunately, my playthroughs of DS1 didn't feature anything notable outside of the fake illusory wall meme :/

Dark Souls trilogy worth it for a casual?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 05:27 AM PDT

The Dark Souls trilogy costs like $60 and I'm wondering if it's worth getting for someone who've never tried a soulsborne game. I'm more of a casual though I enjoy 3rd person action games which aren't too hard. I've watched some Dark Souls gameplay and it looks amazing, so is it worth getting or will I just end up wasting money?

Leeroy locked me out of 100%

    Posted: 17 May 2020 11:28 PM PDT

So I was incredibly close to 100%ing dark souls remastered on steam. I got every achievement save for The Dark Soul and Knight's Honour. I have every weapon for Knight's honour except for 2 - the Sanctus and the Grant. Both of these are dropped by Leeroy. I wasn't human or watching for 100% in my first playthrough so I missed him. In my second playthrough I encountered him, backstabbed him for the kill, and he fell off the cliff. I could see his stuff but it was out of reach. I didnt think this was a big deal since i had to NG++ to use and collect the final souls needed anyway. As you'd expect however basically the same occured in NG++ (except for the fact he rolled off himself).

So is there a way for me to get his drops without playing through the entire game yet again? I mean I enjoyed the game but 2 and a half playthrough is more than enough for me. Its very unsatisfying to be left so close yet far from the 100%. It seems like a dumbfoundingly stupid mechanic if there isnt some way. Alternatively would it be possible to trade with people. I'd be willing to trade any of my equipment for these 2 final weapons if anyone is interested in that.
