Welcome to the weekly Dark Souls mod announcement and discussion thread!

Beware! Use of mods whilst connected to the internet can cause you to get banned from online play!

For more information, or to continue the discussion visit /r/ModSouls

Using mods (PC only!) to enhance or add new content to the Souls games is great fun! It is important, however, to understand that mods are against From's EULA/ToS, so there is a great risk of being banned when using them due to From's anti-cheat--which is deployed in most versions of the Souls games.

Versions of the games where modding is safe due to no anti-cheat:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

Versions of the games where modding carries a very high risk of being banned:

    Dark Souls: Remastered

    Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

    Dark Souls III

    Our recommendations for safe modding

*This advice is intended for first-time or relatively inexperienced modders who want to get into modding without risking a ban on their main Steam account.

    Basic Steps:

    Make a separate Steam account

Use Steam's Family Sharing feature to provide your new account with access to your main Steam account's game library.

Install games to be used with the new account in a separate directory.

Once you've found your mods be sure to read (and follow) the mod author's instructions carefully prior to installation.

Set Steam to "off line" mode.

Install the mods and perform any necessary setup.

Enjoy the fun and interesting experiences offered by mods!

Be sure to remove all file components of the mod before going back online!

    How hard is Dark Souls?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 11:20 PM PDT

I was thinking about buying Dark Souls, but I'm afraid it might be too hard for me. Could you give me examples of games of comparable difficulty?

Darkroot Garden is a jaw droppingly beautiful area, it was in that moment I fell in love with the game.

    Posted: 03 May 2020 02:58 PM PDT

I've played this game and looked into everything about it endlessly and I still get the same reaction and feeling every time I venture into Darkroot on a new playthrough.

The ambience is incredible, the fuzzy filter is amazing, the area has a haunting sadness to it and alongside the tragic battle with Sif I also always get feels when I fight with Havel in the basin. The whole area is just heaving with sad memories of Oolacile and the silence is just so terrifying. I think this area is when it clicked with me when I first played it.

I think it should be considered just as beautiful as Anor Londo. I still love that reveal cutscene of Anor Londo but nothing will beat that change of atmosphere when you wander into the garden from the Undead Burg...

This weapon doesn't do dick for damage but god damn is it fun to use, I love wailing on enemies and sucking humanity out of npcs. Its just unique imo, I'll never get rid of it

After 100+ attempts, I finally defeated Ornstein & Smough

    Posted: 03 May 2020 10:39 AM PDT

I literally fought these a-holes at least a hundred times or more over the course of 2 months and I've never been so frustrated by a game in my life. I tried summoning Solaire, I tried summoning people online, but I always struggled with maintaining enough humanity and never succeeded. After trying an uncountable amount of combinations of gear, weapons, and strategies—I beat these guys solo and it was the greatest gaming moment of my life.

Don't just try to run past the bridge wyvern.

    Posted: 04 May 2020 03:27 AM PDT

I wish I could completely scrub from the internet any trace of the advice: JuSt RuN pAsT iT. That's not how the timing is set up; if your success rate is based on the AI failing, it's not advice.

The wyvern will drop from its perch, landing on the bridge. This is the intended moment to get past him. Please stop telling folks to wait until after the swoop attack, you'll get hit.

Wait until he lands, run through his legs, you won't get one-shot, and you won't make the attempt 20+ times hoping MAYBE this time you'll make it between fire breaths.

Don't bang your head against that particular wall.

And don't you dare go hollow.

So, just thought of this... But why isn't the firekeeper naked when you give her soul back? Since, you know, you stripped her clothing off her corpse?

Wait so Vally of Drakes isn't the correct entrance to Blighttown?

    Posted: 03 May 2020 02:05 PM PDT

I have no idea why it wouldn't be. The depths suck imo and it was super confusing. I always thought that Valley of Drakes entrance was the correct one most players go to. It's super simple to just go down Firelink Shrine and take the elevators there instead of going to the depths or whatever.

When I first went there I knew a bit about Blighttown and I thought it was some late game hellhole. When I entered it and it said Blighttown I was in awe that I had to endure the shit that is Blighttown this early. It wasn't as bad as I thought. It was hard sure but once you get good poison resistance and explore for a bit it's actually pretty simple.

But still i don't know how people consider the Depths to be the correct entrance

    Finished Dark Souls Remastered...

    Posted: 03 May 2020 01:07 PM PDT

There is a certain atmosphere, a mood, almost a call from something unknown to explore this old world of dark souls. The dark forests, the majestic cathedrals, the abandoned towns, and the forgotten kingdoms.

Why is it that I feel the need to know, to see more? To discover, yet wonder. To ponder into the past of what was.

What ordinary person walked this paved path long ago, only to vanish from the memory of man? Did their thoughts fade into nothing? Or are they still out there, in some other forgotten wasteland.

This game man. Just wow. Whoever crafted this world is a genius. I can't get enough of the lore of this world, but at the same time I dont want to spoil anything for myself as I continue this journey. The bosses are the most expertly crafted and designed bosses I've ever seen. The interconnected world lets you explore to your heart's content. Secrets everywhere if you're keen enough to find them (I'm not).

    Images.

    Posted: 04 May 2020 04:02 AM PDT

That no images rule is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Sure, let's have a subreddit dedicated to dark souls, but let's not limit it THAT much. The subreddit is too broad for anything less. I just saw a post here featuring a really well done art work of a DARK SOULS CHARACTER. I just think that if your going to have a subreddit called Dark Souls you should allow room for all dark souls content. Even the ugly. But what does the community think?

I just got to Anor Londo...

    Posted: 03 May 2020 08:17 PM PDT

I already knew that this game was beautiful, but when I got carried above the wall, and I saw this huge, incredible city, my jaw dropped. This sight did more than confirm my high expectations. It made me love it even more than I already did. It just goes to show you, that in this game, the world doesn't care about you beating an are like Sen's Fortress, it just throws even more at you without a second thought. And I absolutely love it.

    PS4 Remastered no player notes/messages?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 02:37 AM PDT

Hey all! Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this.

My friend and I just picked up DSR on the PS4 recently, mostly due to extra time due to recent events, and the digital sale.

My friend has never played before. He really has tried quite hard to avoid spoilers for Dark Souls all this time, and I've been watching his blind playthrough via him streaming to Twitch with his PS4. (He lacks a capture card for his PC and his internet behaves better with only one device using the internet at once.)

One of the things I have been looking forward to him experiencing is the player notes! Having player placed messages as a troll/joke/guide was always super cool to me back when I played on PS3 back in the day. There were some secrets I never would have found on my first blind playthrough without them!

Only problem. . . My friend played for 3 hours last night and I haven't seen a single player note load in his game. He's made it to Undead Burg and still not a single note.

Does he need to obtain the Orange Sign Soapstone (I didn't inform him of this merchant, he's passed by the entrance. . . But I'd clue him in if it meant unlocking such a large component of the game!) or White Soapstone to start seeing player notes/messages in this version of the game? (Or maybe this was a thing in DS1 and I just don't recall it??)

Are there just THAT few people playing that there simply ARE no player messages to be loaded at all?

Is the fact that he's streaming from his PS4, preventing him from playing online somehow?

Is this a known bug? (After some brief research it seems like this might have been true for the initial version or two of the game, but since we just bought it digitally it should be up to date?)

Thank you in advance for any info! Have a good day!

    Spoilers: Ruined my cleric build

    Posted: 03 May 2020 04:02 PM PDT

Little background: played all 3 DS games to completion multiple times and I consider myself very knowledgeable when it comes to these games and the lore.

I decided to try a new build, a cleric/miracle worker. Never really bothered with them just because they're not my thing, but im looking for a challenge. So I start deprived with master key, per usual. I speed through the asylum, get some miracles(force and heal) and get to work on building my cleric. Spent 3 days after work powering through the burg, darkroot(got sidetracked), depths and blight town(haven't killed quelagg yet). At this point I I decide I should probably up my arsenal of spells. I learn I need to complete thorolunds quests before both bells. So I spend a the day trying to navigate the catacombs, discovered a new bonfire in the catacombd with a skeleton(dwarf?) Blacksmith I've never seen. Spent literally 3+ hours just trying to master existing the room. The second I do, the wheel skeletons bombard me, depleting all my stamina and health EVERYTIME. Finally wedge past them only to have the hardest encounter with pinwheel I think anyone's ever had. Cant think of a time I didnt kill him within 15 seconds of the fight starting, but this time hes multiplying left and right, teleporting and shooting fireballs and fire streams in every direction while my short sword and force spell do nothing. After exhausting all my estus, I deliver the final blow with ~20% health left. I Reluctantly warp back to the bonfire as to not waste 16000 souls(very valuable as I'm only level 20). I power through the nudist on wheels, after they accidentally murder my blacksmith buddy(should have been all the foreshadowing I needed to know what would happen next), speed run the the first giant tomb bonfire and got pushed by patches down a hole. After 20 deaths, I finally killed Reahs stupid guards only to discover SHES BEEN MURDERED by those totem orgy piles!!!! I didnt know NPCs could be killed so easily by enemies! Now if I want to continue my build(for me it's either 100% all in a build or nothing) I'll need to restart. I've havent been so frustrated with dark souls in years AND I LOVE IT. Its difficulty and chaos like this that I crave from games

TLDR; tried a miracle build for the first time on Ds1, powered through the first bell and down to blight town, decided to up my arsenal by saving raeh in the Tomb, after hours of grinding through the catacombs only to have her MURDERED by totem skeletons while I fought her gaurds, thus ruining my cleric build.

Anyways I want to hear other stories like that where you accidentally ruined you're game/build in some manner(killing NPCs, losing a valuable item, getting stuck where your build is too weak, etc.). I need reassurance that I'm not the only one willing to throw away a character over something like this, thanks!

Just finished Dark Souls, and there is something on my mind.

    Posted: 04 May 2020 03:55 AM PDT

Okay, just like in tittle. It's took me over 5 years to beat this game ( and for 4 I used keyboard instead of pad, I also played without DSfix so you know how ''hard'' this was ) and Steam show me that I ''wasted'' over 200 hours. Because it's took me so long I forgot many things about lore, and here is my question. Did Lordran is some of kind purgatory/hell place? It's some kind of other dimension? What is even undead curse? Did all humans are undead? What happend if we restore fire back?

Is it possible to get the special Sif cutscene and join the Darkwraiths in a single playthrough?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 01:48 AM PDT

My understanding is that you need to place the Lordvessel to get to Duke's Archives to access DLC. But if you talk to Frampt you cant join Darkwraiths, so you need to kill 4 kings and talk to Kaathe instead. But in order to kill the 4 kings you need to kill Sif and get the Artorias ring. But to get the special Sif cutscene you need to access DLC and rescue him first. To access DLC you need to get to Duke's Archives.

So, here I sit, in quite a pickle. Weighing my options, so to speak! Hah hah hah hah!

    Oolacile Red Npcs

    Posted: 04 May 2020 01:41 AM PDT

So i've been playing Dark Souls Remastered on the switch for the last month and i finally got to the dlc on NG+. Just beat Artorias and i hanged out a bit on the pvp hotspot just to try it out. Now i'm trying to progress the game and finish the dlc but enemy npcs have a red aura now.

I read it is due to a gravelord servant being in the area, but i never spot his mark and npcs have been like that for at least 3 days straight. Also i tried booting offline and npcs are still red for some reason even tho i can't even read online messages because i'm offline. Is this normal?

Beating Dark souls as fast as I could

    Posted: 04 May 2020 01:35 AM PDT

So today I had set a challenge for myself. I was going to be the first Dark Souls as fast as I could. No speed running type stuff just playing semi-fast and enjoying it. I streamed the entire thing and it was nice to see my literal thousand hours across the series get put to the test. I ended up beating the first game within 3 and a half hours (with the stream itself being a little bit longer due to save/quit strategy) and I am super proud of that. It's nowhere near the world record but it's a nice personal record nonetheless. Here's the link if any of you wanna skim through it :)

And I watch a lot of saint_riot videos, but are there any other YouTubers I should watch to gain further knowledge? Anything helps, thank you.

How our characters return to bonfires after death, and how long they remain dead

    Posted: 03 May 2020 03:39 PM PDT

Did a search and found that this has been discussed on here in the past, but not much. I've been playing DS2 again this week and I'd never really thought about how our characters get back to the bonfires after dying. Always just figured they teleport back somehow.

The description of the Darksign says that it's triggered by death and returns it's bearer to the last bonfire rested at, but it doesn't explain how. I'd never considered that our characters might make their own way back to the bonfire after dying. After the darksign wakes them from death they crawl or stumble back to the bonfire as it's the last thing they remember. The homeward miracle's description in DS2 reads

" The curse slowly erodes one's memory, until even one's birthplace is reduced to a figment of a clouded past. But the bonfires are constant, a beacon for the tragically afflicted. "

The problem with this is that if your character falls into lava or falls from the Dragon Aerie or into some pit they wouldn't just be able to crawl back. If they did make it back it could take years. That got me thinking about the time between our characters dying and them respawning at bonfires. I always assumed it was just instant, but when you look at the state of your character in DS1 and DS2 after dying they look as though they're decayed and have been dead for a long time.

We know that time is convoluted, so this makes sense to me. While years may pass for our characters as they make their way back to the last bonfire they remember, only a few days might have passed for the NPCs in the world.

I mean we know our characters can teleport between bonfires, and there are spells that do the same thing, so it could just be that we magically reappear at bonfires. Just thought it was interesting that our characters look as though they've been dead for a long time after respawning, I'd never really thought about that and it's something that's never explained in game.

Have any of you thought about this, any theories about either of these things?
