Artorias of the Abyss is probably my favorite content in the series

    Posted: 15 May 2020 04:00 PM PDT

Last night I finally killed Manus, it's not so much that I was stuck on him, I just never even made the attempt despite reaching the Oolacile Township on several play throughs. I still have Kalameet to deal with, but at this point I'm confident saying this is my favorite content from all three games and their DLC's.

The bosses are all great. Sanctuary Guardian is probably my favorite beast fight. No awkward camera angles to deal with and butt-hugging cheese is minimal due to its moveset. Artorias is my favorite "armored dude" fight, hands down. Sure, Allonne and Raime are great in 2, but Artorias' frenetic movement and the sound design just make for an amazing fight.

As for Manus himself, I don't know how to classify him, man-beast? Either way I immensely enjoyed the fight. He's very systematic in that I found him relatively easy to dodge, but he punishes you massively for messing up. His dark sorceries are definitely harder to avoid and add some spice to the fight. He is one of my top Souls bosses now.

I loved exploring Oolacile, even if it was relatively short. I love the creepy atmosphere and how the city gets more and more corrupted the farther down you go. It starts off feeling similar to the Undead Burg almost but ends up being something else entirely more ominous. The secrets and shortcuts were all fun to find and felt very rewarding.

I'm not sure why I took so long to complete (or mostly complete) this bit of content because it is absolutely worth it. Although I find all the DLCs for all the games really high quality, this one just blows them out of the water (much like the base game itself).

P.S. Just to emotionally punish myself I went and fought Sif right after I fought Manus.

I just no-hit ornstien and smough in my sl1 playthrough.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 09:39 PM PDT

I've been giving the sl1 a try and it was going ok until i got stuck on OnS for a while. I picked it up and tried and I've gotten close a few times But then i had one really good try where I hadn't been hit and Lightning smough was already close to half health So i just went for it.

    Dark Souls Trilogy: Confessionary

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:32 PM PDT

I know getting gud is important but I have to share with you this shame and confess that in...

    Dark Souls...

I've never beaten Capra Demon without using the stairs to trick its AI.

I've never beaten Manus in a fair 1v1 way. I always reduce its health below 50% with a bow from outside the boss fog.

    and in Dark Souls II...

I've never reached the end of the Frigid Outskirts. That place is a nightmare.

I've never killed the Ancient Dragon. Not even close.

    and in Dark Souls III...

I've only tried to kill Darkeater Midir once. It scares me how my best weapons only tickles his armorscaled body.

I can't beat Sister Friede. Her third phase is too much for my heart. Also Father Ariandel screams creep me out.

Feel free to share your darkest Souls secrets with us. They're safe with us.

Did anyone else prefer the "You Defeated" message over "Victory Achieved"?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:51 AM PDT

Here i was thinking i got gud.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 05:04 PM PDT

i just finished DS1 NG+ and was feeling pretty good about myself. soul level 125, lots of cool armor and weapons. I also beat ds3 last year. i decided i was gonna finally play dark souls II.

im sittin there thinking (only somewhat seriously) im gonna beat this thing first try, no dying. I create my character, light my bonfire and go fight the first enemy; that big cyclops troll mother fucker. chippin away at his health laughing about how i gud. then he gets me, and again. and boom. im dead. then i die 4 more times in a row to this lumbering idiot. i literally rage quit the first enemy of the game.

and that my friends is why Dark Souls is the greatest.

    never go hollow.

King of the Hill Dark Souls Art

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:37 PM PDT

I'm looking for an old image I found a year or so ago with the king of the hill characters drawn as dark souls characters like big hat logan and the crestfallen knight standing at firelink shrine. I NEED this image, hopefully this isn't a rule breaking post

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:32 PM PDT

I just killed Ornstein & Smough in two attempts!!! I almost did it in one, but I underestimated Smough's AOE attack at the end. The best part: I was livestreaming at the time, and the viewer watching got to witness my victory! Could not be any happier if I tried!!!

Was Blightown nerfed in the Remaster? First time doing Blightown...and it is actually a super fair area?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:52 PM PDT

Maybe it doesn't help that I played DS3 + the nightmare of its DLC areas (f**** the ringed city swamp) before playing DS Remastered but...Blightown is fairly alright.

Is this a case of people being traumatized by DS difficulty when compared to other games of its genre when it first came out? Everyone talks about the nightmare of Blightown yet I only died once since dumb me got cocky and didn't realize how fast the super toxicity kills you.

The vertical design is alright. The enemies are actually quite fast to kill except the Shrek dudes (but they're so slow that it's impossible to get hit by them) and the lighting/darkness ratio isn't that bad to be honest.

Yes, I know that comparing a mid-game area of the first game to DLC area of the third game is kind of stupid but honestly, I feel that the Depth area was way more frustrating (stupid curse frogs!!!!!) than Blightown.

Just realized that Depths are one of my favorite areas in the series

    Posted: 16 May 2020 02:59 AM PDT

This strictly refers to my first playthrough when I was banging my head against the wall trying and failing to get into the game for 2,3 times prior to this. I started getting comfortable until the trek through the depths began. The tiny claustrophobic hallways, the huge rat in the background, face-huggers falling off the ceiling, lizards that somehow didn't curse me until my second playthrough, but still kept the panic up.

The whole area was making me anxious and alert while slowly making my way through it. Then you enter the Gaping Dragon enormous room, and he slowly crawls out, first looking like an alligator or some shit only to reveal his full self and scare the shit out of me as I had 30k+ souls at that point. It's insane how well his dramatic reveal works to scare a new player despite him being one of the easiest bosses in the game. Anyway, I managed to kill him after a few tries, with 70k souls, and I just want the game to give me a break at this point.

Instead of going back to spend them, I delve deeper into the shit hole that opened up, color scheme changing to sickening green, and get murdered by toxic twice without having an idea what was firing at me, losing all 70k souls. I seriously considering uninstalling the game again out of sheer rage but decided to keep going a few days later.

Now I consider the entire experience from the start of the Depths to the bottom of Blighttown as my favorite moments in gaming, it was literal dungeon crawling and reminded of the first slog through Blackrock Depths in WoW back in Vanilla.

Elden ring is not dark souls 4

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:18 PM PDT

Had a weird reddit conversation on here today. Someone was convinced that Elden ring was Dark souls 4, and nothing I could tell them would make them believe that its not. Not even the fact that Myzaki himself said elden ring has ZERO relation to souls baring play style

My first experience with Dark Souls

    Posted: 15 May 2020 09:31 PM PDT

So after reading a lot of people experiences with the game, many of which are from new players (cheers), I started remembering my first time with Dark Souls and my first souls-game experience overall.

I'm not sure about the year, probably 2016, I was working as English teacher for 1st graders. I got sick with hepatitis A and had to leave for a full third of school year. During that time, I was able to play some PlayStation 3 games that I didn't have time to play. But once I finished those, I was bored. My girlfriend talked with a friend and got me two PS3 games: Skyrim and Dark Souls.

I had heard about Skyrim of course, so I was excited for it. Never had heard about Dark Souls, perhaps some thumbnails in YouTube but that's it.

I wanted to try Skyrim first of course, so I booted it... But I couldn't fully install the game. It got stuck at a certain porcentage. So after trying a couple of days, I decided to try Dark Souls.

I still remember the feeling from hearing the music on the create a character screen. It was eerie. Like the safe room music from resident evil 3. Somehow it was peaceful and calmed, but felt like the calm before the storm.

So I started my character. Undead asylum. I can only remember three things clearly:

    1. I couldn't find the door in the first encounter with the demon , but until many lapses around the arena.
    2. I landed my first plunge attack against the demon and felt edgy af.
    3. I died like 5 times to the parry skeleton (where you first get the how to parry message)

Afterwards, I got ravened. Enter firelink shrine. Again, the music was something else with what it made me feel. But now I had this beautiful green color around me. And the filter was really smooth. I started detailing my character and the environment. It was really beautiful in its own way.

Then madness started. Of course, first stop was graveyard skeletons. I died a lot naturally, but kept coming back until I was able to defeat one skeleton. Then my weapon got broken. I was a knight if im not mistaken. So when I found the mace I was happy! Until I noticed I didn't know how to get my stats up.

I learned and eventually made my way to the undead b. Everything went ok I guess, I was cautious and moving at regular pace. Eventually I reached the first black knight and oh boy it came with extra homework. I learned about bonfires and enemies position reset. I farmed some skeletons. I attacked the merchant while fighting skeletons. I got the uchi! I broke the uchi.. so after moving on with a broken uchi and some other weapon, I found Taurus demon.. and here I stopped playing for a while, after getting destroyed several times. No idea how to defeat THAT in such a narrow corridor.

I dropped the game for some days, until I decided to give it another try. Got myself a new character (wanderer oh yeah) and went back to Taurus. And this time, magic happened. I found the ladder! And soon enough, remembered my plunge technique. When I saw the damage that the plunge attacked did to Taurus, my eyes went sparkling! After delivering the final blow, I felt huge, unstoppable, I had reached next level! I fell in love!... And then I met the bridge Drake and said: ohh so you want to fuck with me, Dark Souls, huh? Game on!

I ended up loving the game, the settings, the mechanics, the lore, I started watching videos, read interviews, everything. Finished the game two times, until my gf friend requested both games back, and that was the last time I played Dark Souls.

I got demon souls and DS2 later for my PS3, still have both and play them from time to time. But Dark Souls feels like my summer love, the one that always makes you feel hollow and melancholic, but you still know you gave it all and got it all.

I'm interested in reading your story, feel free to share it if you like.

    Thank you for your time!

Centipede Demon on Side of Wall in Demon Ruins

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:07 PM PDT

I've been playing this game for years pretty off and on. I've beaten it more times then I can count, in the Demon Ruins I've looked down at the lava multiple times before, but this time I was looking down at the lava and realized the Centipede Demon was just chilling on the side of the wall, and then I realized that the boss room was directly below! I confirmed that after you beat the Centipede Demon he is no longer hanging off the side of the wall. It just blew my mind that I had never noticed it and felt like I had to share.

Thank you to everyone invading and cooperating for keeping this game alive

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:16 PM PDT

I came pretty late to the soulsborne party. I bought DS:R like a year ago, expecting a great challenge and finished it feeling like it was my favorite game of all time.

Months later, I eventually played Bloodborne, Sekiro, Dark Souls 2 and 3. Loved every single one of them and had a blast with every one. But Dark Souls 1 remains to be the most special one for me and the one I'm always willing to come back to.

I never played online during my first playthrough because I was too afraid of good players. So my last playthrough during this quarantine has actually been my first time invading or summoning players. My surprise has been that this game is way more active than what I'd expect, considering how many sequels there are.

So, I just want to thank everyone who invaded me, invaded by me, co-op'ed with me, or just put their signal to help anyone. From gankers to people who show respect, I just love that there is still this amount of diversity in a 2 years old remaster from a 2011 game that already has many sequels. I'm so bad at PVP, I have almost no idea about how it works, but I just enjoy sharing my time with other players in my favorite game.

PS: I play in Anor Londo at 125 SL. Is there any other SL/area more active right now?

Do you juggle playing multiple characters, or stick to one til the end?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 03:31 AM PDT

    Curious to see the response.

I'm making my way through PTDE for the first time and I just snagged the Remastered version since there was a decent sale on it. The plan had always been to go through PTDE, Scholar, DS3, and then swing back to the Remastered, but my desire to make a uchigatana wielding pyro/dex character grows strong.

For whatever reason, the idea of putting my first character aside to play another almost feels like I'm being unfaithful or something.

The two archers of Anor Londo....

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:35 AM PDT

I finally was able to get past those two absolute wankers who fire heavy javelins at you while you're doing a circus routine across thin walkways, while being chased by flying monsters that shoot lightning bolts at you. To me that part was harder and more frustrating than any other boss I've done up until that point. Abysmal level design. I had to get that off my chest. Coupled with the long run back every time, that section made me miss Blighttown. 😑

Is the game dead on PS4?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:07 PM PDT

I have multiple characters lvl 60, 70, 85, 100, and 125 and after two days I have yet to get into a single match. I've tried all the major pvp areas and it's just barren. Sad thing is because I was hoping to hop in a couple of games for nostalgia sake but nothing. If it is active, do you mind telling the prime soul lvl and where everyone is.

Edit: Btw I do use dried finger for anyone wondering
